Others say...
"Does Not Work With Mac OS 10.6" I would really like to write a review on how this product works, but I cannot because it does not work with Mac OS 10.6 and it doesn't tell you anywhere that it doesn't. I contacted Roxio Support because I could not get audio to be captured and they responded with "Please note that Easy VHS to DVD for Mac is not compatible with OS X 10.6." I have asked if they plan to support Mac OS 10.6 but they have not replied yet.
So, if you are using Mac OS 10.6 DO NOT purchase this product at this time.
"Worth the money & time. Finally available for MAC!" I have been waiting for this product for a long time. I've loved every other Roxio product for Mac that I have, so it was a no-brainer to try this to convert my beloved VHS tapes to DVD. I bought the 1.0.3 version, so luckily, I have had none of the problems the earlier reviewers have had. This does take a little tweaking if you're using iMovie to run the finished, converted video through. At first, I would just bring the VHS video into my Mac Pro, and then not save it as Quicktime, or for iMovie. I learned the hard way, that when you bring in the video, choose one of these options (Quicktime is most universal-and is what I prefer now) but now I have mastered how it works, which is very straightforward, and satisfying. The biggest pain with the whole thing is that no matter how wonderful the converter is, it can't make your old VHS tapes look as good as a modern DVD. What you put into it is the same quality that comes out. VHS tapes just can't compare to HD DVDs. But who cares, it's the best way I have tried, to get old VHS tapes (both family tapes, and regular VHS bought movies, that are not available as DVD's) into my computer to edit them onto a DVD. One other thing; I am a mom & I like to be able to edit language and content of favorite movies. This works great for VHS tapes that are beloved, but that have content you don't want you family to view. Just manipulate what you don't want in iMovie, and you end up with entertainment you can let your kids watch without a care. I can do the same thing with DVD's thanks to some software I found on the web, (DVD Mac the ripper) that imports video from any DVD I insert into my computer. I like the control these products give me, over tapes / DVDs I have bought and own.
"Stinks, stinks, stinks" Works with iMovieHD? NO? At least not directly. I spent an afternoon and evening trying to get the clips into IMovieHD. Kept getting "Can't open iMovieHD." Then I found the .mov files and found out I had to pull them into the clips to get them into iMovie. What is even MORE irritating is that when I start recording, the clip pauses in the viewing window. It's a good thing I have a small TV set up to the VHS so I could tell when I wanted to stop recording. DON'T BUY!!! Even when I contacted Roxio support, I was told it was an Apple problem. NOT.
"Roxio VHS to DVD" This item is great! Easy to use and makes good quality DVDs. This could just be user error, but one thing that would help me is if the size the transferred file will be was shown BEFORE you begin the transfer. Sometimes the file is too big to burn to DVD and I could have adjusted the quality or planned to separate items if I knew ahead of time. Often I find that I have to do another transfer to make a copy of a VHS that will fit onto a DVD and since the transfer happens in real time it can take a lot of extra time.
"Doesn't work with SNOW Leopard" Do NOT BUY this product if you are running SNOW Leopard. IT does not work with it. I got this in June before SNOW...but just installed it 2 days ago and I can't get it to work well. It hangs constantly while trying to finish up the video after you click "Stop recording." If you try to record more than 8 min's of video it never records more either. EIther way the software is a $67 waste for me. The ONLY good thing is that it does seem to be very easy to use. And in fact i did get it to work ONE time for a 4 min video clip I did. I wish so much it'd work more. The good thing is their customer service on email is VERY responsive. The BAD thing is they have NO answers for Snow Leopard and told me flat out it "may not work with Snow Leopard." May not work!?!?!?!? Trust me it does NOT work. They said they are working on a fix...hmmm.
Roxio has diaspointed me very much. They really should give me my money back. Lesson learned..do NOT every buy a product "pre release" like I did with this. What a mistake. So let me be the goat this time...do NOT buy until and IF they ever fix their software. The latest patch makes no difference.
Hate massively!!!

What our customer's say!
"Mac version works great!", I purchased this product to convert my home videos from VHS to DVD to preserve family memories. The Mac version works really great. Setup was simple. Install the software and plug a VCR into the adapter. Start the software, continue through the sound and video connection screens, hit "play" on your VCR, and click on "record" when you're ready to start the conversion. Most of my home video was recorded in EPP so I could fit up to 6 hours on a tape. The longest I have converted so far is 2 1/2 hours into a single file which used just over 75 Gb. I then use iMovie to edit and iDvd to produce the DVD. Time consuming but simple.
"Does the job well", I have some really old VHS tapes that I wanted to include with photos in a DVD re a trip taken in 1993. I looked for an inexpensive way of transferring the tapes to my MacBook Pro computer. This product includes software and connecting cables. You don't need a television. Just connect your VCR via USB cable to the computer, start the VCR, and you can watch the progress (like you do on TV but smaller) on your computer as the data is being transferred. The data is compatible with iMovie and can be easily converted to just about any form with the free MPEG Streamclip application. For some reason the process of converting the data directly to iMovie did not work and I had to use the aforementioned application to make the necessary conversion. For that reason I gave the product 4 stars rather than 5. All in all, this is a great buy. It does the job without needing to buy an expensive VHS to DVD recorder.
"Product is a waste of money!!", I bought this software, even paid extra for shipping so I could work on my material all weekend. Instead I have spent the ENTIRE weekend trying to make the software do what it is SUPPOSED to do. Video does NOT show up in I Movie; Roxio's customer support is almost non-existent. They make it extremely difficult to even get through to them. You CAN get help from their "premium support line" which they will charge you almost $2.00 per minute for!! Don't buy this product unless you have money to just throw away!!
"Intentionally Crippled!", Roxio's Easy VHS to DVD for Mac consists of three items... the USB dongle that does the analog-to-digital, the Easy VHS software that captures it and saves it to an MPEG video file, and Roxio Toast 9 Basic for burning DVDs if you don't wish to use iMovie.
The dongle is finicky and nearly Snow Leopard compatible. With some tweaking and luck I got it to work. Video quality is acceptable; not quite as good as on the T.V., but not too bad. Of course it is real-time.
The Easy VHS software is pretty bad. It saves the file, and then takes quite a while to finish writing it to disk. And then it gives you an option of whether you want to open the file in QuickTime, send it to iMovie or exit. This is really important: IF YOU DON'T SEND IT TO iMOVIE RIGHT THEN, YOU CANNOT DO SO LATER.
On the other hand, if you do "Send to iMovie", it takes a long time to encode the movie for iMovie.
Even worse, Roxio's support people are not aware of this, as they don't actually know their product. (But again, the manual is flat out wrong about what the software can do too, as it covers the non-crippled version Roxio charges an extra $70 for rather than the crippled version the product comes with.)
And, to add injury to insult, this also means that Roxio must re-encode for iMovie, which by definition reduces video quality. Very annoying.
Roxio Toast Titanium is a decent piece of software for burning and converting videos to and from different formats. Unfortunately, that is NOT what comes with the package; you get Roxio Toast 9 Basic. Which CANNOT DO CONVERSIONS, even though they are documented in the manual. It cannot convert from Easy VHS format (MPEG) to iMovie format (MOV.) It does, however, have a Convert button - which simply pops up a button offering to ream you for $70 to get software that should have come in the box.
And Toast 9 Basic also has many other features disabled, labelled with "Upg" for "Upgrade for $70 to get this functionality you thought you were buying."
Note also that I said "Toast 9 Basic". That's "9", as in NINE. Toast 10 is the current version, and has been for over a year. (I'm writing this in Feb 2010, Amazon started carrying Toast 10 in Jan 2009.) So not only are you getting incomplete software, but it's OBSOLETE incomplete software!
So the bottom line is that you can capture VHS video and get it into iMovie for DVD creation, but it's a very painful slow and exacting process. Roxio's description and their support department are both clueless and inaccurate on it. Beware.
"Get's the job done!", This program will allow you to plug it into your video camera, VCR, etc (basically anything with an audio and video output cable) and directly into your USB port on your computer or laptop. It then streams the video and sound feed over, while recording it through it's own included software. It comes with basic menus to add. The downside is that the description is deceiving as it requires additional software to edit it with IMovie on your Mac. But if you just want it to stream over your home movies, so that you can burn them to a DVD, then this will get the job done for you. It's easy to use too.
You might need this...
Read this reviews before You buy...
"Only for older operating systems, very slow (several hours) and no customer support", I have tried Easy VHS to DVD on several Macs, running 10.4 and 10.5 using home recorded and commercial VHS tapes. Easy VHS to DVD often quits unexpectedly at the worst time. After recording a 90 minute video it takes almost an hour to render the movie on even the fastest Macs. Then, if you chose to export the movie to iMovie, it's another hour. Somewhere in the process it is likely to quit. You have to start all over. And, even if you select 90 minutes as a recording time, the program keeps recording, so you can't leave it on unattended. It will never stop recording automatically.
Even though the movie you recorded shows up in iMovie 09, iMovie cannot open the movie, so you can't edit it. iDVD doesn't recognize the movie.
If you use Toast to make a DVD, even a premium version, the video quality is terrible. The video looks OK in Quick Time, but you can barely see the image if you go directly from Easy VHS to Toast to burn a disk.
Any questions you ask support are answered with a form letter and a copy of the manual. I find this especially insulting.
Even if you can get this to work, it will take a lot of time to convert even a few movies.
When you read the discussion boards, everyone else seems to be having the same issues.
There must be something out there that works.
"Super Easy", This is so easy to use and I think that all the updates you download once you install it fix most of the issues people are talking about. I almost didn't buy this product because of the reviews it was getting but i'm glad that I did. Works great and is cheaper then the program they sell at the Apple Store.
"Basically satisfied", As originally purchased, the product had some bugs, but Roxio issued fixes within a week or two and it now works basically as advertised. Very easy to use.
"It really is easy!", From setup to operation, this product worked like it needed to. They provided every cable you could possibly need including a pigtail for the USB which is really handy when you are using a laptop like I do. Very happy with this easy to use transfer program.
"POOR", I Bought this product and am VERY disapointed It is not as i read about the copies are of a vert poor quality. In the past when i was using a [C and Nero we got great copies but using this Roxio product it is the oposite I sent a E-Mail to the company and as usual from most Software companies no reply I get the impression and my personal view is once sold that;s it
