"Winter Symphony"
I had heard great things about this cd, and I was disappointed that it did not live up to the raves it was given by some people.

"A Winter Symphony (3.5 stars)"
This year Sarah Brightman releases her first Christmas album. Frankly, I'm surprised its taken her this long to do one, but after listening to this several times over I feel like maybe she should have waited even longer. A WINTER SYMPHONY has its moments but feels kind of rushed to me; like she didn't put enough thought into her material. The songs I do love are "Arrival", "Ave Maria" with Fernando Lima, "Silent Night", "In The Bleak Midwinter", "I've Been This Way Before", and "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring". The best track on this album, though, would have to be "I Believe In Father Christmas". That song perfectly embodies the spirit of Christmas while the other songs mentioned evoke the beauty and magic of the holiday/Winter season. Her angelical voice is as lovely as ever but I felt that her first Christmas album could have been a lot better. I, however, still recommend this album for the gorgeous photos within the glossy booklet and still think it's a great addition to anyone's holiday collection.

After seeing Sarah Brightman live in concert last week, it pretty much rekindled my love for her music despite the fact that her last two albums were slight disappointments to me. But then again, we got two new Sarah Brightman releases this year so I can't really complain, now can I?

"What an amazing treasure!"
Sarah has produced a treasure chest of old favorites and fresh melodies with contemporary, beautiful sounds and rhythms. I have listened to it more times than I like to admit and I never tire of the richness of her voice and the exquisite accompaniments she incorporates. I have purchased several as gifts for friends for next Christmas.

"Another holiday classic"
Excellant holiday CD that includes a number of original songs that makes it all the better. Ms Brightman's voice range just adds to the power of this CD.

"Not Sarah's best effort"
The über-exotic Sarah Brightman has probably had the most prolific year of her artistic life. Earlier on in 2008, she released "Symphony", a Gothic album shrouded in mystery and sumptuous music. In time for the Christmas season, Sarah gives us "A Winter Symphony", i.e., the version of "Symphony" for the holidays. As much as the earlier album took my breath away, "A Winter Symphony" appears sometimes to leave Sarah's unique vocal qualities a bit too subdued, and I have to agree with the reviewer who suggested giving the reverberating tones of the vocals up in favor of clearer lyrics. That, and also the fact that Sarah's voice feels tired and unable to deliver in more ways than one.

Once again, the album is produced by Frank Peterson, who adapted most of the traditional Christmas songs into English, although why this was done escapes me, as Sarah can sing in several languages, including Latin and German, languages in which most traditional Christmas music is written. The one song that allows for Sarah's voice to be heard in all its intensity is the traditional "Ave Maria" by Gounod (this one kept in Latin, thank God). The production, however, is much better when it comes to the songs that were especially composed for the album, such as Neil Diamond's melancholic "I've been this way before", and "I wish it could be Christmas every day", performed à la Céline Dion and with wonderful choral backing by the Capital Children's Choir. "I believe in Father Christmas" is a realistic song about the meaning of Christmas and closes the album with grandeur.

The photography by Simon Fowler, as usual, deserves special mention. The lavish, glossy photos of Sarah in a purple satin dress in the middle of a winter wonderland are idyllic, and transport us to the spirit of the season, sadly, sometimes even more than the music does.

What our customer's say!

"Beautiful Winter Music", My am a Sarah Brightman fan and this CD is beautiful music for winter or anytime.

"Sarah's Symphony", I have been a Sarah Brightman fan since her days as Christine in Phantom..and was very excited when I heard (in WALMART, of all places!!) her first Christmas album was out. Couldn't find it ANYWHERE..not even Barnes & Noble or Borders. And they usually have EVERYTHING!!
So I came here, ordered it, and listened to almost nothing else up till the holiday.
Sarah's ethereal soprano is always an instant classic, and the ability of her and her producers to mix orchestral and modern musical genres works as incredibly as always.
My 11 year old who, since "Time To Say Goodbye" was one of the CDs in her lullaby libary, has grown up listening to Sarah and is also a fan, and her favorite was Silent Night as well as Arrival (which is also one of my favorites-I mean, I could just visualize in my head that song sung by Sarah heralding the angels' arrival to the shepherds on Christmas night), Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, Child In A Manger (sung to the tune of "Morning Has Broken")..and Ave Maria. Least favorite was the one with the kids "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday"..she just seemed awkward with the childrens chorus, but then, maybe its the cultural difference between the USA and Europe. (I don't know anyone, teachers or other adults who call a bunch of kids "children"..we call them "kids"..but, again, it could be just me.) Amazing Grace was good, but can't compare to Chris Tomlin's version, sorry. "Colder Than Winter" was kind of sad, but I know that the holidays are very hard on people who are alone or suffering a loss this time of year, so that's probably appropriate; and "I Believe In Father Christmas" is an uplifting, hopeful song that is a good choice for closing out this outstanding album.

"The album doesn't live up to the cover art!", I love Sara Brightman's sweet ethereal voice, and I was seduced by the gorgeous album cover--but I was disappointed by the music. The album contains rather an odd mixture of music, with some tracks that have been done too many times before, and a couple that she should not have done at all ("I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day" and "I Believe in Father Christmas"). The most irritating thing about the album though is the orchestration. Sarah has such a sweet voice, but it's not a big voice, and she's all but drowned out by the heavy orchestration on many of the tracks.

At the same time as I bought "A Winter Symphony" I also bought Lorena McKennitt's "A Midwinter Night's Dream." The cover art on this album is quite different, but lovely also, and the music more than lives up to its promise. The choice of material is more interesting than "A Winter Symphony." It's not just the same old, same old--and the music accompanies and accentuates Lorena's beautiful voice, but never overpowers it.

Sorry Sarah.

"SARAH BRIGHTMAN", THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MUSIC EVER HEARD BY ME. IT IS EXTRAORDINARY AND THE SELECTIONS ARE MAGNIFICANT. HOORAY FOR SARAH. MADE AN EXCELLENT PRESENT FOR LOVED ONES.

"Sarah Needs to Sing Out More", This holiday CD is enjoyable for those who like Brightman's orchestrations. Unfortunately it continues her breathy style of singing that is not particularly attractive on many of the songs. She might as well be Brittney or any of the other "singers" who don't really sing. She doesn't need to sound like an opera singer to sing out with slightly more power. The song selection is fine, repeating some "old chestnuts", but adding enough difference to make them interesting. Fernando Lima continues to be amazing, even in subdued form on one song.

"Sarah Brightman is the best", I love Sarah Brightman anyway, and this CD is absolutely amazing. It's very wintery without being completely Christmas, and I will listen to it all winter long. It's perfect when you're in the mood for something that fits the season but are tired of the same old traditional Christmas music (no matter how much you may love it).

"Should have waited", This CD is ok, and I do enjoy listening to some of the songs. I'm a long time follower of Sarah and know what she is capable of. Her voice sounds tired. The songs feel thrown together. I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday, in my opinion, should not be on this album. It sticks out like a sore thumb and completely deviates from her "style".

That being said, I heard some of these songs live during the Symphony tour recently and she sounds TONS better live than on the album. I wish she had waited another year or so and given this album more time to develop...and to let the voice relax. She's had way too busy a year to commit to something like this.

"Unbelievably Bad", Imagine the worst migraine you've ever experienced and then tack the word buzzsaw on the end and you may begin to get an inkling of the aural torturefest that is Sarah Brightman's Christmas album. Simply terrifying.

"sad winter", I had the opportunity to go to concert of Sarah "A winter symphony"
at the Bank Atlantic in Ft.lauderdale and I considered it as good as
Harem tour. As always She is unique, spectacular , beautiful,
extraordinary performance, BUT the CD I just bought is too slow,
and nothing excited me as previous CDs.

"Great music", Great music. I was looking for another sarah brightman CD and found this one in the list. Perfect for a christmas present!
