"Worth Every Cent"
I inherited FTM 2003 from my Dad with thousands of family records. I upgraded to 2005 and took classes but never really got into doing much. This newest version is FANTASTIC! It does so much and makes it easy to find where I need to add/update/correct/research information. I can easily enter source information and media as well as standardize data such as locations. I recommend it highly. Also, by buying it on Amazon I saved over purchasing directly from the FTM site. Thanks!

"Family Tree Maker 2009"
Have owned FTM versions since version 1. FTM Version 2008 needed patch to run on Vista - was funky and clunky - version FTM 16 better. This newer version seems to work better - and with pronises of improvements - couldbe a much better product. FTM Version 16 still is better but has compatabilty problems with Windows Vista.

"Gen"
Family Tree Maker 2009 essentials is a very complete package. It is the same item sold elsewhere for a lot more money and they have less time on the internet. It is a lot more program than past ones and will take some time to become a pro at, but is intutitive enough most anyone will be up and running in a short amount of time.

"family tree maker 2009"
This product is replaced an earlier version, which no longer worked correctly since I upgraded to a Vista computer. I find that it is not quite as friendly to use as the earlier versions. On the other hand, it provides some very helpful links to possible relevent data in ancestry.com that the earlier version did not provide. I would recommend this program to anyone who is looking for family history.

"Great product"
I have been using Family Tree Maker for years, and I love the new features in the 2009 version. Family Tree Maker 2009 Essentials Definitely worth it to upgrade.

What our customer's say!

"My Wife Loves It!", My wife is an avid genealogist and has been using Family Tree Maker for many years. I purchased this for her to replace FTM 2006 that she has been using for the last 3 years or so since that version would not run properly on our new Windows Vista PC (by the way, this 2009 version runs fine on Vista 64 bit, SP1). We had purposefully skipped the upgrade to FTM 2008 because of all the negative reviews we had read.

My wife has been using FTM 2009 for about 3 weeks now, and she loves it. She tells me that there is nothing she could do in FTM 2006 that she cannot do in FTM 2009. (One caveat here - she uses FTM extensively as a research tool and as, of course, a database, but she does not do much printing / publishing with it). She did say there is some "re-learning" to be done, figuring out where to go in the new interface to get things done, but she found the included printed documentation helpful in that regard. Furthermore, she loves how well integrated the Internet is with the rest of the application; e.g., she really likes the integration of Microsoft Virual Earth under the "Places" tab.

One minor issue we had getting it all set up was the download & install of the Enhanced Image Viewer. While the installation file itself downloaded from Ancestry.com OK, it was not an executable file as downloaded. In order to run it, I had to manually add ".exe" to the end of the file name to make it an executable. Then, every time we tried to run it, we got a generic error message that said the installation had failed & to contact FTM support. Only after rebotting the PC & restarting FTM 2009, would it then install. But, in the end, I did not feel this minor annoyance warranted taking away a "star" from my ranking.

"Family Tree Maker 2009 Essentials ", Works great . I like the product. Finally updated old 1996 version .

"Family Tree Maker Essentials 2009", Some what generic looking in appearance but well thought out. I've been using the version 7 for almost 10 years. I tried to load the old version 7 onto my Laptop containing Microsoft XP and failed the attempt. So, I thought it was time for an upgrade. I'm very happy......Family Tree Maker 2009 Essentials

"Lots of stuff, not easy to learn", I've been doing genealogy on and off for years, and haven't used FTM for a while. I've been rebuilding my family history [...] and decided it was time to get desktop software, and decided to get FTM 2009 because I figured it would make things easier to switch back and forth. Now, I've been using computers since I was a child, and am quite comfortable with them, but I am having a terrible time navigating around this software. It does not recognize sources that I linked to people in Ancestry, and keeps giving me hints for these sources. I am having to go in, person by person, and ignore all these hints so I don't have the little leaf on every single person. The help files have not been useful, and the email I sent has yet to be answered. I am having problems with merging information as well. I still find it difficult to move around the tree to different people and get their information up.

I don't want to scare people off of the software. It has a lot of room for your notes and sources and media and all kinds of fun stuff. It hasn't crashed (I've got Windows XP). It just isn't really intuitive, and it's likely you'll have to sit down with the instructions to figure out how to do some really basic things (no, the 1920 census is not an "alternate fact" to the 1930 census--it's a completely new source! Gah!)I have issues with any software that you end up having to buy another instruction book to really make use of it, but that's what I guess I will have to do here.

"Much bettre", This version is soooooo much better than the prior one. Runs quickly, easy to import pictures and video. I run this on my old junky laptop and it runs really well. I have very little time anymore so when I sit down to work on this I need it to be easy to figure out, easy to manage, and I need it to run quickly. This version does all of that.

"Beware of Ancestry.com free trial", The software is ok. Beware of the ancestry.com free trial. If you forget to cancel they will bill you for a full year subscription with no refund.

"To buy or not to buy", There are a lot of different types of software out there. If you are new and just starting out. This is the one which I recommend. It is easy to use and it works with [...]. So it makes researching must faster and easier by giving a green leaf for possible records on that ancestor. The previous Family Tree Maker programs do not have this feature. They have a wonderful help section which will look for answers on the disk/program and/or on the internet.

If your not new and been working on the tree for awhile - it is still a great product in regards to making charts, uploading stories, time tables, etc. that their previous programs did not have. Easier way of doing edits on sources, adding videos, pictures - you name it.

I have saved my records from Family Tree Maker 2006 updated to 16 over to Family Tree Maker 2009. Boy, what a difference it has made in time. I'm looking forward to seeing how they are going to improve over this product later on down the line.

"Family Tree Meker 2009", I have used an older version of Family Tree Maker for several years. The 2009 version provides great tools for researching the entered data. It adds great value to genealogy searches.

"Tried it...Don't Especially Like it.", I bought the latest version of FTM (09) a few weeks ago but don't especially like it. I can't quite put my finger on why...too complex?...too unwieldy? I still have it on my computer and I access it once in a while and play around with it, but when I work on my huge family genealogy database, I still prefer using the old, free LDS program called PAF. It just seems easier to "move around quickly" in PAF. I suppose it might be better when I got more familiar with it...but right now, I just don't know. Maybe people who use earlier versions of FTM might like it. I think I'll keep it on my computer though and use some of the new, neat features that PAF doesn't have.
I can't say it's a "bad" program, it's just not exactly what I want.

"Unstable program", I finally got used to the new format of FTM 2008 and 2009. What I cannot get used to is that the program frequently closes for no apparent reason and gives me an error message. The folks at FTM/Ancestry instructed me to go into a particular directory and delete a certain folder and restart the program. That solved the problem for a short time and it recurred. In fact, the last time I used FTM 2009 it shut down right AFTER I had just applied the fix. These are the most UNSTABLE versions of FTM I have ever used.
