"Great Graphical Display of a Tired Genre"
Overall I do enjoy playing this game and picking up a copy on sale at $35 was a steal. However, it lost its allure a little quicker than expected, perhaps because I feel like I am essentially replaying COD4 in a WW2 setting. The most frustrating thing though is the small map sizes. I spent months playing Bad Company and kind of became accustomed to large maps and a destructible environment. It really disappoints when you try to flank an enemy only to find that you are at the limits of the map while you are taking heavy fire. The story line plays out very well and this game is the best I have seen in bridging history with gameplay. The online play is enjoyable, but with small maps you had better be quick with your weapons.

"CALL OF DUTY WORLD AT WAR"
MY KIDS LOVE THIS GAME AND I HAVE EVEN PLAYED WITH THEM. YOU GOTTA LIKE WAR GAMES THOUGH!MUCH MORE REALISTIC THAN HALO

"Single player is very flawed, but the rest of the game makes up for it"
I was a huge COD4 fan, and I heard the mixed reviews about this game, but I had to buy it anyway simply because I liked the last one so much (best game ever, in my opinion).

I always play through the single player first, then play the other game modes, so I'll start there.

I played single player on veteran, which was a mixed bag of difficulty. Most enemies are slow on the draw and not very accurate shooters, which means all of the small dogfights are pretty easy. But veteran difficulty also ends up being really hard due to the computer being exceedingly cheap. For example, some enemies have machine guns and will blind fire around a corner at the exact moment that you walk around it, even if you have other teammates out in the open. On a related note, during big gun fights, the bad guys will throw all their grenades directly AT YOU, no matter where you are, no matter how far away you are, how many good guys are between you and the enemy, etc. I managed to play through it, but I thought these two aspects were pretty annoying.

Lastly, it seems that many of the scenes have a never ending stream of enemies; in order to progress, you must forcibly move your line up. None of your teammates will do it, so in addition to your other objectives, you'll also have to take out the enemies on the front line, then run up and dive for cover in order for the rest of your team to move up. This is kind of cheap, again, but I guess its by design in order to make the game more challenging.

Anyway, none of this is terrible when playing on veteran -- I wanted a challenge after all, I just feel like the balance of difficulty was really off in some scenes.

The major flaw with most of the single player campaigns is the linear layout of each stage. You're arbitrarily blocked off from moving around on any area of the map that isn't part of your staged path. In the very first level, even, there are some shacks that have open doors, and the game won't even let you go in there. This gets really frustrating in later stages where the game prevents you from flanking in certain situations, or forces you to take a strategically poor position. (I'm thinking in particular of one board in Japan, where you are forced to navigate through a trench, and even though there are plenty of things you could climb up on, the game forces you to stay on the low ground. Tactically this is absurd, and it strips out the element of COD4 that I liked the best: using terrain and obstacles to your advantage to gain the upper hand on an enemy force that is much larger.

The game does re-use a lot of the mechanics of the first game, so it does have that advantage. It also invents some cool new gameplay twists, such as the bonzai attackers who hide in the grass. The first such ambush is actually really artful and fun to play.

I won't bother talking about the setting or the guns, since that's all pretty obvious. The game wasn't nearly as suspenseful as the last one, for obvious reasons, but playing the older war scenario was really affected by the cut scenes in between boards which show real war footage, and are quite gritty. My roommate actually had a hard time playing the game.

After finishing the single player mode, I was thinking about rating the game 3 stars. But I decided to try two of the other game modes first: 1) zombie nazi, and 2) xbox live

1) Zombie Nazi is actually really fun. The artwork is done well and its kind of macabre and grotesque while still maintaining a bit of cheekiness. I would compare it to a zombie movie that combines a bit of the typical horror genre cheese with some legitimate terror. (Think "Dawn of The Dead") I only played it a few times, but it involves some strategy and I think will be fun to play co-op, although I haven't tried it yet.

2) The Xbox Live multiplayer, thankfully, is very faithful to the model set by COD4. The mechanics and game modes are pretty similar, with the only obvious difference being the different weapons (which also obviously changes the speed and balance of the fight). I played a few rounds tonight and it was a lot of fun. Instead of "helicopter" on a 7-frag streak, you get "Pack of wild dogs" -- which cracked me up when I saw it. Anyway, all of the barracks challenges are there, and the same level-up/unlock system which made COD4 completely engrossing.

So in light of these game modes, I raised my rating to 4 stars, with the added caveat that if you liked COD4, you will like CODWOW's multiplayer, but probably not love the single player campaign.

"Dont listen to all the COD4 fans"
Listen if you liked COD 1,2,3 and the Medal of Honor series this game is definitely for you. I almost didn't buy this game because some people reviewing this game said that it "sucked" because it didn't beat Call of Duty 4. Look, they are just old Rainbow Six nerds who are mad because they have to wait another six months until COD6. This is a great game...don't get me wrong, COD4 is was a sick game but this just as good but with the ww2 theme. Just because they don't have modern weapons doesnt mean this game automatically sucks. This game is not suppose to compete with COD4, they are two completely different games so how can you compare them? I bet you half of these reviewers didn't even play the game. I have played every COD, MOH, Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon games and this game beats them all. This is well worth your money...take this from an UNBIASED reviewer and not from some old nerd living in his moms basement whose mad because he has to use a mosin nagent instead of an m16.

"The Truth"
I give this game a 5 star for fun, but only a 2 star for overall. Why? Magnificent question! If you are a gamer, and you play it alot, a ginormous circle scratch will form around the disc. Thus, ruining the whole game and disallowing you to play. According to my friends it is because of the faulty game case, but some believe it is just something wrong with the disc. I loved the game, zombie mode, split screen co-op, its all just great. But the huge circle scratch ruins it.

"Really fun game!", The graphics are awsome! Love calling air strikes..Lots of action, all my friends like it too!

"Duty Calls", When this game came out it was not all that great. However the patch fixed all of my biggest complaints. No more people getting under maps and the weapons are more accurate. Still some issues need fixing, but overall a solid fun shooter.

"My husband loves it", I bought this game for my husband for Christmas...he started playing it a couple of nights ago and I don't think he has gotten much sleep...he can't seem to put the controller down. I assume that means it is a great game !

"fun, fun, fun.", I have not seen my son since he got this game for xmas..He just loves it,and he plays against all his friends which is cool..Thanx Santa.

"Best Game EVER!!!", This is probably the best COD game yet. The solo player game is awsome!!! alot more challanging than the previous COD games. also, once you beat the game you can play "Zombies" on co-op mode which your in a building and zombies are trying to get in and you and others go as long as you can until your taken over. Multiplayer is about the same as COD4 except the graphics are WAY better on this one. you can call in dogs which are a pain in the a$$ to kill and much more. I definatly reccomend picking up this title.

"Great online", I'll concentrate this on the online multiplayer portion since I got this for the multiplayer. The online is similar to COD4, while I don't enjoy the older weapons too much, each weapon section is highly customizable. I actually like the bolt action rifles, and then turning them to snipers! I was never a sniper person in the other games, so using the rifle's as is, is pretty awesome. I do feel grenades blow up quicker, and the flash bang actually gives out your spot if you're just trying to be sneaky but blinding. Definitely not a fan of the tanks though, some matches online got overpowered by one team controlling all the tanks with a horrible score gap. Still trying to get used to tanks here.

The artillery strikes are actually horrible. Air strikes happened quick, and in a small spread spot. The spread area for the artillery is not the problem, but how fast it happens. If one missile hits, it's as if the person has enough time to run away from the artillery all together. I find artillery to be about 20% of what air strikes were in the other game. Not guaranteed kills, but it still gives an edge when you see players running from the spot. I've only died from artillery strikes from either being horribly careless, or a horrible spawn. Compared to air strikes that happened so sudden, it was either I was in reach of the air strike or I had enough space not to die.

While I loved the chopper in the other game, I think I love the dogs even more. They go INSIDE houses and attack. People were many times safe from a chopper attack by staying indoors, and still able to do their thing, but the dogs in this game are a massive interruption, that's just lovely! Following the dog and seeing where they'll strike will force the person to either hit you or the dog, but chances are the dog hit first and they're already trying to push the dog off, which obviously, allows you to get a kill. The dogs can be killed, but hey, they feel like cheating to be honest, but this balances it out. The game is still new, so it's glitchy. I've seen dogs stay in one spot jiggling while still alive. Sometimes running in circles. I'm sure it'll be fixed.

More new perks, some seem very useful if used tactically, but if you're a lone wanderer, you can expect to be using the same old perks like hiding from radars, extra power, 3 frags, claymores (bouncing betty's), and my favorite perk 3 being extreme conditioning. Everything feels just as solid, though, extra power seems a bit necessary now. It could be me, but I feel as if the life cap was increased JUST a little, not sure, or maybe it's just the weapons, haven't figured it out yet.

Outside of the weapons being extremely customizable and the perks being really nifty, physics being the same, there are the downsides I've noticed in the online which can make anyone hate it. It isn't often in online matches, but sometimes when it decides to spawn you in horrible spots, it DOES spawn you in horrible spots. I've been spawned into artillery strikes and in front of tanks. Totally unexpected and not prepared, so obvious deaths. It wouldn't be such a pain if it didn't happen too often, but at least once per round, if you're going to die, you'll experience a horrible spawn. COD4, I've had horrible spawns, but I've never been spawned into an air strike, and rarely in the opposite gang. I was shocked when I was spawned where the enemies were sniping, and then died from a shotgun instantly by a guy behind me.

Another thing I've noticed hating a lot is crouching all the way and laying on the belly. Seems that you get near a wall, and the guy starts to freak out. COD4 DEFINITELY has the better belly crouching to be honest. I'll get around this though, and I'll hope it gets a tune up, isn't too bad,

Some stages are actually downright amazing in this game though, but some are just far too small... or far too small to be in a random for team matches. I've actually enjoyed every stage in this game so far, few gripes with a few, and wish some didn't have so many tanks. Some stages are far too small to be containing tanks. Can't complain, here to be honest, it's a great fps, it just needs to have spawn spots fixed. While not a fan of playing WWII shooters, this will be the exception. Also, COD2, man I just love that game.

"A Fun Game Any Gamer Will Love", The Call of Duty series succeeds yet again with the newest installation called "World at War". If you've played Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare it is obvious that World at War is very similar to it. It uses the same game engine with a very similar play style. This repetition doesn't make the game bad, since like it's companion, World At War is a great and addicting game. The story is good for WW2 game, and the Multiplayer mode is top-notch and keeps players coming back for more with unlockable weapons, challenges, modes, etc. The graphics aren't the best but they do suite the gameplay well.

World at War is a must buy!

"It's not COD4... but its worth a look.", After playing many hours of Call of Duty 4:Modern Warfare I was expecting something great to follow. Seeing as most of my time was focused on Multi-Player, that's where I will begin. The maps in World at War are much bigger than that of Modern Warfare. They allow for much more sniping and group espionage rather than the run and gun method used by most on the smaller maps in Modern Warfare. They continued some of the many multi-player game types and added a few more options along the way. I enjoyed the hardcore game play in the previous COD and was happy to see that they added a couple more hardcore options such as hardcore free for all. There are a couple of complaints about the new multi-player as well. First of all the maps are large, this is an advantage in some aspects but a couple of the maps are just too big to play with the smaller group sizes. Also if you are into the run and gun method it is much harder to find people before you get snipped by those opponents "Camping" in the corners. The last thing isn't really a complaint but something worth noting. Tanks have been added as a multi-player option which turns the user into a nearly indestructible enemy. The reason why I don't list this as a complaint is because it is a part of the game, and the slow speed of the tank and turning speed makes it easy to avoid if you wish.

As far and the storyline goes I have no complaints. Being a fairly regular player I still struggled through the Veteran difficulty, but that's how it should be. The implement of new enemy intelligence has added to the difficulty of the game. Snipers in trees as well as very well placed grenades (usually hitting you in the face) makes progress difficult at times.

The last implement that World at War has added was the Zombies Mini-game. This game is sweet. A nice little perk for completing the game. In this mini-game you have a chance to bring yourself back to a House of the Dead type game. In this mini-game you are attempting to ward off and ever increasing number of zombie attackers.

The weapons are nothing too amazing, but considering the WWII setting they are pretty close to the technology of that time.

Overall I found Call of Duty:World at War to be a good game. It's not an all new entry into the realm of 1st person shooters, but it is definitely worth take a look.

"anything below 3 means you suck at it....", if you rated below 3 your either a halo fan, a WW2 hater, or you just plain out suck at this game...the game is JUST as good as the 4th one..the only reason i gave it a 4 is because of the tanks and some maps...the tanks do get whored a LOT and kids get like 80 kill streaks with them, and the maps arent AS good as the ones on COD4...but the guns and dogs etc...new perks and what have you are all reliable and work fine IF YOUR GOOD...id recommend this game

"Back to 1942", Last year I was playing COD4 like it was going out of style, and still am. However my time playing it has been cut a bit due to the excellent offering by Treyarch. A lot of people bagged the game before it came out due to the setting, WWII. This may be a big deal to some, but not to me, and if you like FPS than it shouldn't matter to you either.
The game, at it's core plays eeirly similar to Modern Combat. The controls are the same, the engine is the same, and the leveling in multiplayer is the same (well almost).
Now, with the obligatory Modern Combat reference, and the mentioning of the WWII setting out of the way I can give you some pros and cons.
The Pros:
Graphics: Absolutely beautiful. Some of the best water and lighting I've seen. Some people may dis agree, but I think it is stunning.
Gameplay: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The controls are responsive, and tight.
Co-Op Campaign: Something COD4 did horribly wrong, 5 does right. Up to four players killing Nazis! For those of you without LIVE you'll be able to play two player co-op locally.
Zombie Mode: Beat the campaign and you and up to three other friends will be put in a barn to fend of wave after wave of Nazi Zombies. One of the best parts of the game.
Death Cards: You'll find these scattered throughout the game. It's not just simple find and collect them all, they each do something to alter gameplay. Find the first card and you'll be rewarded with a "Exploding Headshots". So instead of your standard headshot, watch the head explode like a freaking watermelon.
Multiplayer: Now if you have LIVE, you're gonna love it. There are some quirks which have been mentioned. Namely spawn points. However, it's not enough to detour you if you enjoy competition. Leveling up (by gaining kills) is as addictive as it was last year.
Now the Cons:
Campaign: The length is the only problem. The story is passable, but it goes by way to fast (unless you play on veteran, which is recommended). You'll get through it in about 6-10 hours depending on your skill.
Vehicle Levels: This is my own personal bias, but I hate vehicle levels in shooter. All of them. Whether it's Gears of War, COD4 or COD5, I just can't stand them. I think they disrupt the game. I didn't come here to drive a tank, I came here to shoot you in the legs with a shotgun.
Enemies in the campaign: Just like COD4 the enemies never stop spawning unless you reach a certain point in the level, kind of a pain. That, and on higher difficulties there is an insane amount of gernades being thrown which makes for some frustrating moments.
That's really it. It's a great shooter, not quite as good as COD4 but it's in the same league. This game has gotten an unfair stigma just because of the setting. In my opinion it's unwarranted.
If you liked COD4 you'll like COD5. If you like online multiplayer, you'll like COD5. If you like killing zombies in a barn with friends, you'll like COD5. If you don't like the aforementioned, or you want more of a single player expierence, this probably isn't for you.
