Others say...
"All you'll need for home movie productions" I was a big fan of Showbiz DVD 2, but when I had the opportunity to work with Studio Ultimate, I thought I'd give it a try.
It is very easy and intuitive. Don't let the manual scare you. It's got a lot of great effects, transitions and even comes with a green screen for you to add some backgrounds to you videos. It supports layering so you can use the green screen to put a different background to your actor, or whatever foreground you wish to have.
It also comes with the ability to mix audio.
It supports and creates many formats such as AVI, MPG, MOV and others. It is pretty comprehensive. The transistions that you can use are really nice. Very fluid, doesn't make the picture "choppy" during the effect, like others have.
The best part is that is supports video and analog signals, so you can take all of your old VHS tapes, or in my case, non-digital video camera, and capture it and edit to your liking.
I highly recommend this product as it will make your movie making a whole lot easier than some of the other products.
"Best video editor and tools for Windows XP+" I have used Pinnacle Studio for years. I'm pretty sure it was version 8 that I started with. I paid for the upgrade each time until version 11, but was slow to upgrade to 12. If you have a previous version, the upgrade will cost a little more than half of the new version.
I'll start with the only problems that anyone would have. Mainly, you need a newer PC that can handle all that it has to offer. Windows XP SP2 or Vista SP1. 2GB memory, 3GB disc space if you want to create HD quality.
This can burn everything including Blu-Ray. And exports files DV, HDV, AVI, DivX, RealVideo 8, WMV, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, Flash, 3G, and edit audio such as WAV, MP3 etc.. most everything you need. Or direct to your ipod, PSP, iphones etc.
If you are new to Pinnacle, I actually suggest starting out slow. Maybe start with the standard version and upgrade your way up. There could be a newer version by the time you get used to it. If you are like me, I am not much into manuals and user guides. I learn by seeing or doing. But their web site has online tutorial videos on every subject. They even had a DVD class not too long ago.
The appeal with Pinnacle Studio in the different versions the add-ons. Many not even created by them, but work well with it. With these included parts, you can create a wide variety of effects, titles, transitions, and take editing to some interesting levels. With 12, there are now animated effects,
The most appealing addition to 12 is "Montage" which finally gives you the ability to layer videos, be it other video or animation or images. There are plenty of templates to get your creative juices flowing.
YouTube users are remembered here with special upload abilities to save some steps.
If you want to make a DVD or Blu-Ray disc, and have no idea what you are doing, the program helps you along with templates and easy effects such as motion menus and title sequences etc.
There's so much in "Ultimate" that you might not even use it all. But it's great to know all the features are there. The third party add-ons helps with many directions such as error corrections, enhancements, specific effects such as 3D or chroma key (green screen is included in the box!)
This is by far the best release of their so far. Each release before I never completely felt it was worth the upgrade, but this one is a definite and actual upgrade... or the best starting point if you are new to Pinnacle.
"Much Better Results than Previous Pinnacle Studio Products" I'd started out a few years ago with a previous version of Pinnacle Studio (I think v.8) and found it to be not-ready-for-primetime. The editing was intuitive and relatively easy to grasp, but the rendering and creation of DVDs was a disaster. I went through countless blank-DVD-coasters before finally resorting to using Nero to burn the videos that I'd edited with Pinnacle. Way too much of a hassle.
I'm happy to report that Pinnacle Studio 12 seems to have worked these kinks out. I'm now creating great looking videos (from DV sources) and actually rendering them for web or DVD use with consistent reliability. Plus, this Ultimate Version comes with a lot of effects add-ons that used to be sold separately from the main editing suite. So, this version is also a better value than prior ones.
There is more than adequate documentation provided for advanced operations, but most will make simple cuts of home videos and doing so is as easy as ever. Installation was straightforward and I encountered no problems with it.
If you've been looking for a way start getting your home videos out of your camcorder and into finished products, then this is a very good choice for doing so.
"Easy to use, professional quality editing" I have been using Pinnacle studio since 2004 - and till today find it to be the best video editing software for home users.
Windows Vista Home Premium packages a neat software called Movie maker for editing videos - I have used it a couple of times - it is very basic, it just serves the purpose but no where near comparison to Pinnacle Studio.
I've divided this review into what Pinnacle can do for you and then compared it with Windows movie maker for editing features so that you can decide if you want to buy Pinnacle or just stay with Windows movie maker depending on the kind of editing that you need to do.
What does Pinnacle Studio Ultimate lets you do ? ============================================== --> Capture Movies & photos from Camera/Camcorder: Pinnacle includes a nice UI to capture videos from your camcorder, infact you can even control the camcorder from pinnacle - such as pause, rewind, fast forward ... This feature is very easy to use and this is the first step you do in creating your own movie
When the video is captured, it get broken down into scences (not the file itself, but the scenes) - Pinnacle does this by comparing the changes in light in the video - this will allow you to view different scenes of an hour long video capture. Example, let us say you were shooting a video of your kid indoor and then you stop recording, go outside and start recording the next sequence - even though the entire sequence is one video file - it will appear as 2 scenes
--> Edit captured movies: Video editing happens on a time scale - you are presented with a time scale, where you can drag and drop your video scenes or you can choose to drop all the video scenes into the timeline.
In Parallel to the video timeline, you have the following: Original soundtrack - edit the volume of the original soundtrack with the click of mouse, very intuitive External audio - add any music you want to - mp3, cd or in built standard sounds ... and edit its volume Title - add any text that overlaps your video
The timeline is the key thing in understanding video editing - irrespective of any software that you are using to edit the video - Pinnacle provides a very easy to use interface for editing all these features.
As an example, let us say you were shooting video in a noisy environment and you want to edit that noice and replace with your own music, you just need to reduce volume on the original soundtrack, add the external audio and keep it for the duration for which you want to override your music on the original sound track. This may sound complicated, but trust me it is very easy to do.
In addition to all this - there are tons of features - slow motion, fast motion of videos ... giving the video different kinds of effect ...
--> Publish your video: Publishing your video is a beauty - really love doing this. Let say that you were creating a video of your recent trip to Disneyland and you visited 3 of the theme parks - Epcot, Animal kingdom and Magic Kingdom and you have your memories captured in all of these theme parks and have spent time in editing these.
When creating a DVD - you can create a DVD title with mark up links to each of these theme parks, so that when you are playing on your DVD player - you can use your DVD remote to select the particular title and play it.
If you do not wish to publish in a DVD - there are many more options to publish - VCD (lesser space, low quality), DVD, mp4 ... But most of us stick to simple DVD
Comparing WinDVD to Pinnacle ============================
-> Add music to your video ? Both -> Edit video to take out unwanted stuff ? Both -> Add titles to video ? Both -> Edit original soundtrack volume ? Pinnacle only -> Edit added music track volume ? Pinnacle only -> Multiple publishing formats ? Pinnacle only -> Special effects ? Pinnacle only -> Slow/fast motion of video ? Pinnacle only. -> Support .mov files ? Pinnacle only
Overall - from all the video editing softwares that I have used, Pinnacle is the best for home users like you and me, it is simple to use and yet create professional quality video.
"The Ultimate Pinnacle" Factoring in all the requirements with hardware and software, this top of the home end requires some serious hardware. The major factor to consider is that it is made by the makers of AVID, one of the finest digital video editors in Pro production. Following all of the listings in this package, you need at least a Dual core Machine, about 4 GIG of RAM, and input and output cards that include firewire to take advantage of all the options available. As well as multiple format disc burners and players( including Blu-ray). The considerably impressive functional elements that make up this package, are set so that you can get started in an easy mode, and produce something fairly decent with the templates available to you. However, you will still need to spend about an hour or so to get the basics. And should you wish to go all out, you can really rip into it, and make the templates do what you want, anyway you like, and its totally brilliant at that. For both levels, and all stops in-between, you can vary things in any fashion. The basic formula of Capture, Edit and Export to disc ( or where-ever, and Where-ever can even be You-tube) is so variable that the flexibility of this software is truly wonderful. I was fully convinced when I had friends and associates who varied from Pro level skills to basic, and they all wanted the software. This is one gem which even has its own green screen for those shots of the cat where you place him or her in Ancient Egyptian animatics !!

What our customer's say!
"A must for the casual user", After installing the software and spending the first ten minutes to view their video primer on using the software, it already looked like this package would be a great addition to every household that has tons of videos stored all over their hard drives at home with nothing to do with them.
I was in this category ever since I bought my Sanyo Xacti camera. Its great to be able to take video and easily transfer the files to the computer, but then I had the issue of being able to compose them into a compilation. With Pinnacle Studios Ultimate, it fills my needs; the ultimate version includes support for mp4 (which my sanyo records in). I'm not sure if both the standard and plus versions include this but it was definitely something that I needed. I haven't had the chance to create a DVD yet, but its nice to also be able to create VCD's (a format that is not all that popular here as it is overseas, but to my knowledge many DVD players support). Since CDR's are so cheap now, you can make many copies of short clips or home movies (less then 30 minutes for SVCD that is a little higher quality then standard VCD that should be comparable to a VHS tape if memory serves me) in this format instead of having to use a DVD-R.
The ultimate edition also includes a disc full of plug ins which is very nice to have. The package also includes a green screen so that you can superimpose whatever is recorded in front of it onto something else. I haven't tried this yet, but it looks interesting and should make for some fun video.
I haven't had very much time to use the software but it seems very intuitive and very flexible. Out of the box it has lots of extras that allows most people to create something that is presentable and with interest. I'm not a professional in the field, but I would venture to guess that unless you need "professional" features, this should do the job.
Overall i think this is a good package that I would recommend for most users, but a must for the casual user.
"Powerful yet easy to use", I've used a number of video editing software over the years, from the lightweight editors included in Roxio's Easy Media Creator and Nero 7, to the fully-featured Adobe Premiere. Lately, I had been using Ulead Video Studio, which was a nice compromise between Premiere (too hardcore and overkill for 99% of us) and Roxio's suite (too bloated and not enough features). After trying Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 12, I will probably not go back to any of those programs. Studio Ultimate strikes the right balance between full-featured and user-friendly, which is very important for those of us who are not professional video editors. Creating a DVD is easy and quick, and I have yet to encounter a single hiccup with the software. There are tons of features and effect plug-ins, probably more than I'd ever need, but they are included and easy to use. The interface is simple and attractive, and rendering speed faster than in other software (though this greatly depends on your processor speed and amount of RAM). Overall, I'd highly recommend this software- for the price, I haven't found a better video creation/editing tool.
"Wheres the sound?", Been using this software for years. This is an amazing program. Been having problems sinse version 11. 40% of my dvds have no sound and have to be done again. On 2 different computers 1 vista 64 and 1 windows XP. So Iam assuming its not my computers fault. Besides that it is easy to use and amazing what you can do to your home videos even if you dont know much. Hopefully they will have a patch soon to fix the sound problem.
"The most stable Studio version I've used", I've been using Studio software from Pinnacle for years. I've always gotten decent results, but version 12 is, so far, the best.
With past versions of Studio, I've had problems with unrecognized CD/DVD drives, crashing, etc. With Studio 12, I've had no problems, which is great. But there are still some things about the interface that lead me to rate this package as a four instead of a five. For instance, after laying out a series of audio, video, still, and background music clips, I occasionally found myself wanting to insert space across all of the media while keeping the existing clips in sync. I couldn't find a way to do that. It was the only frustation I encountered in my projects.
This "ultimate" version provides a good set of menus, transitions, etc. It's possible to make professional looking video productions and output them to CD/DVD, even in HD format. I've tried a few other packages but always return to Pinnacle's Studio products.
"Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 12 Got me Over The Initial Hurdles", Though a seasoned network engineer I am a beginner in the world of DVD and Video editing, so I was thrilled to give it a go after being totally stumped by the other competing products in the past.
Therefore, my focus on this review will be towards it's success in getting me over the initial learning curve and intimidation factors.
There are a lot of goings on in this video program and some very advanced add-ons like Boris Graffiti for titling, proDAD, Magic Bullet Looks Studio, VitaSAcene, for special video effects, and Smart Sound for music and sound effects. Like I said, I'm new to this aspect of application so I'll have to assume that it's good stuff.
More to the point, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate has succeeded where others have failed for me in that I can now do some editing on family videos and such.
It's fun and approachable. I would definitely recommend this to beginners. I simply am not qualified as to how it works for any advanced or professional editing scenarios (though it's hard to imagine it wouldn't hold its own).
Make no mistake...there is a learning curve here but thanks to Pinnacle for finally getting me past the intimidation factor and on my way to video editing which, though time consuming is now getting to be fun.

"Lots To Fathom", Ultimate studio contains an entire kit of movie making tools. The manual is a definite need here, even though most of the tools are easy to understand, I found myself overwhelmed trying to find my way around.
Before I say anymore, let me note that upon installation I received a message that my video card needed to be upgraded, but I have not found an upgrade that works on it. Also, my PC is a bit old. Take these into consideration when judging my comments.
The first thing I noticed is that when you add videos it takes a long time to put them in the video bin. It would refresh each video and then repaint all of them. I got tired of that and switched to list view.
The titling was good, and had lots of options. Editing was fairly standard, but note that there are a bunch of options for almost everything. I wished there had been more animated menu backgrounds as well.
This product is a good upgrade and provides a full suite of options.
"Great, easy to use and user friendly.", I use this and Ulead video studio 11. Unlike Ulead's product this one actually works out of the box. Its very intutive and user friendly. It has all the same feature basically but seems to work more reliably. Given a choice between both products I would go with Pinnacle's studio for sure.
"Dissapointed... Great for MiniDV but crashes on AVCHD", I really like the user interface and ease of use of Pinnacle Studio. I figured since Avid now owned this product, that the flaws and instability that plagued this product from version 8 would have been fixed. It seems a bit better, but still not a final release product. It behaves more like a beta version.
Bottom line: it crashes. The most frustrating thing is that it crashes sometimes after hours and hours of rendering. That means if you have a project that takes 30 hours to render, after 25 or 29 hours you will have to start all over again.
For those of you (like me) that need a program to write HD DVD discs, you can use Pinnacle Studio. But you have to eliminate menus, special effects, and any complex rendering. I can burn to a dual-layer DVD in HD DVD format by only using simple transitions/fades. It is better than nothing, as there are very few HD DVD disc burning software in the market. Most are now only Blu-Ray.
If you don't need HD DVD burning capabilities, then I recommend that you look at Sony Vegas Studio Platinum Version 9. It is about 6 times faster and very stable. It will do standard 480i and 1080 Blu-Ray. I use it to make 480i videos for people that do not have an HD DVD or Blu-Ray player. A project that takes about 25 hours in Pinnacle Studio, takes about 4 hours in Sony Vegas Studio Platinum. There are several instructional videos on You Tube that you can use and Vegas Platinum has built-in tutorials. It isn't as intuitive as Pinnacle, but works much better and is worth the time to learn the workflow.
Bottom line: If you need a HD DVD burning app, then use Pinnacle Studio to make a very simple disc. Otherwise, stick with the more stable Sony Vegas Studio, learn the workflow, and keep your sanity.
Edit: In case you were wondering what my hardware specs are:
- Intel dual core 3GHz processor - 3 GB Memory - Windows XP Professional - 500 GB SATA hard drive - Dedicated to video editing only.
"So Far So Good", I usually shy away from products that do so many things! It's overwhelming to try and find something that fits ones needs. Anyway, Pinnacle is a great product as I've seen. I had to load this on my Bootcamp version--which involved setting up my drive and making more room (no fault of theirs!). I probably don't use this in the fashion on movie editing. I only use a few clips here and there from my digital camera to add to my video scrapbook which includes photos and they work fine.
Besides iMovie, I really don't have any other comparison. To me it's definitely easier to "get up and go" with this product than iMovie (not hating, just saying). I can input my clips, plug them together and render them! Easy. With iMovie '08 they don't put any instructions...and it doesn't "just work".
Again, this product might be way too advanced for me as I may never use Pinnacle for full home movies--perhaps its intent?
Either way, it works for me, works easy, and is easy to follow.
"Impressive effects and video editing functions, slow rendering", Overall I am very pleased with this product - it's got a wide and impressive variety of included effects, transitions, templates, and video editing capabilities, but it's abysmally slow to render even on an Intel* Core2Duo* based computer.
What do I like: when comparing this to other products on the market like Ulead* or even Microsoft Windows Movie Maker, it's all about what I can do with the imported content. Can I snip clips, can I use powerful video filters and change the saturation/gamma/colour balance, can I have all the standards like titles, credits, transitions, and things like aging effects. This program has it all, and includes the ability to download additional content (with associated activation keys) if you want to pay to expand the offerings.
Here's what you can expect out of the box: import from pretty much any kind of video file on your computer, digital video from a camcorder, instant capture from cameras, and more; advanced options like sound editing and full video editing down to the detailed level (colour enhancements, noise removal, lighting correction, audio editing); green screen support - with included Chroma Key green backdrop for you to hang up and do cool effects with; automatic soundtrack generation (Scorefitter*) - you tell it how long you need the sound to be, and it fits it to your video; all the bells and whistles - you can pretty much do anything to your video that you can think of, including things like Picture in Picture; export to a wide variety of formats including MPG1/2/4, 3GP, WMV, Real, and many more.
And that's really just the tip of the iceberg. Uploads to YouTube are now pretty standard, but you can also create videos that will play on your iPhone* and iPod*, DVD, HD DVD, and AVCHD formats too. These are things you should expect from any product on the market today.
Let's pause to talk about themes - they are packaged in "families" and you can apply them directly to your movie which includes titles, sounds, music, and more. It's a way to brand your movie without having to do each bit individually.
What I don't like: so far the only problem I've found is rendering time. It takes a LONG time to render a movie. For example, I created a 9 minute and 23 second video (it had a title slide, credit slide, and transitions between 4 main clips) into a WMV 768k broadband file and it took about 10-15 minutes. That's really slow to me. It pretty much ticks along at processing second by second. It's the same regardless of the size of the output - and by that I mean it takes too long no matter what settings you choose. I don't need instant gratification, but today's tech should be able to render twice as fast as this.
What do you get in the box: Install DVD, Plug-in CD (contains the Boris Graffiti - enhanced title animations tool, Red Giant Magic Bullet Looks - style presents and imaging tools, and proDAD VitaScene - moods and transitions effects kits), a pretty significant user guide, green screen backdrop.
It's a very professional product with more effects and tools than you'll ever use, for a very reasonable price. If you need to do detail level editing and manipulation of your audio and video, this is a great prosumer tool.
