Others say...
"Go, Rosetta, Go!"
I have already tried two other Rosetta products and they worked so well, that I also got this German language program although I already know this language at a certain level. As of this time I do not know any other language program that could successfully compete with this one. Except, of course, for learning language abroad. I fully recommend Rosetta's language series for everyone. For more detailed information please refer to my reviews of Rosetta's French and Italian.
"Excellent Product, in Need of Better Headset" Let's keep this short and effective. This is an awesome, albeit very expensive product. If you are a person who wants the best (like me) then this is the product you want to get to help you learn another language. There are a few cons though and they are...
Cons:
Headset needs to be a much better quality for a $500 product. One of our earpieces broke right away.
The voice recognition was superb at first. Now it's quirky. This could be those headphones again.
Price - yikes isn't there a way to sell this for less?
Pros:
Automatic feedback is what makes this such a superb product. It comes in the form of the visuals and voice recognition.
Great visuals are extremely helpful. As an educator, I understand the power behind what is being called non-linguistic representation nowadays. Basically - pictures, video, movement and pantomiming, graphic organizers, etc...to boost understanding and retention.
Very easy to use - my 3 kids = 7, 9, and 15 are each using the product and navigate through it easily. It's a great way for my son in German 2 to stay fresh and practice in a fun format.
Finally, I appreciate how it mimics authentic natural learning of how a child learns a language - by inferring a lot. Yes, there is explicit instruction, just as adults do for children, but there is also a lot of opportunity for the same process children must do to learn a language - infer.
Love the product, just PLEASE include a better headset or two!
"A technique that works well for me" I have this software in three different languages and I find that I am picking up the vocabulary pretty quickly through the Rosetta method. I also do not have a lot of time to dedicate and like it that they include audio lessons that I can load on my ipod, I find that this helps me to not forget too much between computer lessons.
I don't have anything else besides class room lessons to compare this too, and that wouldn't be a fair comparison. So I can't say that the Rosetta Stone software is better than anyone else's, but I like it very much and would highly recommend it.
"Where have all of the bad reviews gone?" I posted a review of this product a couple months ago and it has magically disappeared along with the other negative reviews! Amazingly, it has been filled with a bunch of mostly five star reviews courtesy of the Amazon Vine program. Wow! I guess Vine is code word for, "lets boost sales by providing fake reviews!"
Rosetta Stone is not worth the money! I returned mine after two months. The learning style is that of which a child would use. Guess what, I am not a child and I don't learn like one! You will be much better off by buying a few good books and doing some actual homework.
If you are the type of person who thinks that in order to learn a new language you need to buy the most expensive software you possibly can, then this is the product for you! If you have common sense, buy a couple good books.
"Worth it for an English speaker in Germany?" I actually live in Germany at the moment. I'm on my fourth year here, so you might say I'm immersed in the langauge. My confession is I don't speak German. How could this be you say? Well everyone likes to speak English to me. I have enough other interesting things to do with my time than sit through boring lessons at home.
I've never been good at the whole language thing. I guess that's how my brain is wired. Even after a few years immersed, I hear German all the time (mostly as background noise) but I might have a 2 year old level of understanding.
I've tried a few other audio and text language packages before but I'd usually fall asleep and not be interested. I know learning a language takes time and effort, but the medium has to be engaging.
This isn't a review about me, right? I figure there might be some other people out in the world like myself so I felt some context was necessary.
Cons:
Price - I'm sure there would have to be a better price where they would sell more of these.
Cheap headset - Ever stand up with your headphone on? These broke the first time I did that. Otherwise I was impressed my Mac (10.5) recognized them. It also doesn't have a volume control.
Immersion - As I've mentioned I don't seem to learn well this way. During the lessons when something new is presented I really have to try hard, it would be cool if there was something to click on to see some rules or something. I guess since I'm figuring it out I'll remember it better?
Audio CDs - Don't see me using these, as I tend to fall asleep.
Pros:
Not a lot of cons - Sure I'm complaining about the whole immersion thing, but you have to learn some way. The biggest one is the price.
Works on a Mac (intel, 10.5) - Not the native interface, but the interface works. I had to open up the manual to make sure I wasn't missing anything obvious. I actually was, in the next point I discuss it!
Speech Analysis - This is what makes the product top notch. The voice software is very good at getting you to say the words exactly. There is a little button you can press that will open up another screen that allows you to analyze your voice and the speaker voice to get them to match up. This is a great way to lose my English accent!
Customize your "courses" - You can choose what you want to focus on (reading, speaking, grammar.. etc). I went with everything. I could see myself creating something later that focuses on speaking (as it is my major weakness).
Software's ability to move you along at a good pace - If you zip through things it seems to interject future coursework, if you are having a hard time it seems to re-do a few things. I worked through a 30 minute lesson doing pretty well. When it came to review time, I was really itching to be done so I raced through it. I did poorly and it made me do some extra lessons before I was able to "graduate"
Ability to override where the program is taking you - You can click on a button and see ALL the lessons (check marks by the ones you did), you can retake something or take something it decided to skip.
Fun way to learn - Lots of pretty pictures (not necessary all German related), interactive lessons that switch between matching words to pictures, matching sounds to pictures and speaking when presented with a picture. I seem to be able to go for about an hour before getting tired of it. No more falling sleep with my headphones while mumbling to myself.
Native speaking German as examples - Sound Northern German to me and not Bavarian.
---
So I've been trying my newly learned German out. After the people get over their shock of me trying to speak, they are happy to help out with some pointers. Unlike English where there are many accents, I've found in Germany a slight non German accent seems to make the other people totally not understand. I feel the headset and the speech analysis software totally makes this package worth it.

What our customer's say!
"I've tried other methods, this one is more fun and works!", I've tried other language programs and have done okay with them. I started with an audio book-type program and made it through about 24 hours of lessons before I realized it wasn't going to be enough. I then tried this Rosetta Stone Version 3 software. I was bummed at first that I had to be tethered to a computer to use the software to its full potential but found out pretty quickly that it wasn't as big a bother as I had expected it would be.
The cool thing about this software is that it teaches you without making you translate or learning parts of speech or how to diagram the sentence and grammar. It teaches you through repetition and photo association. For example, it will show you a photo of a red book, a white book, a red plate and a white plate. Then, it gives you the spoken words for "red book" then "red plate" then "white book" then "white plate" but without the English translation. You have to associate each phrase with the appropriate photo and through trial and error, you eventually get them all correct but you've also now learned four new words - red, white, book, and plate.
The headphones were amazingly easy to set-up and it's pretty cool how it really does seem to recognize what you are saying.
Very cool software. I've used it for Spanish AND Chinese, too, and am becoming addicted to learning languages using the Rosetta Stone software. I'm finding German easier to learn than the Chinese, harder than the Spanish. I don't expect to be able to travel to these countries and speak fluently without some sort of Western accent but I do think after what I've learned in all three languages that I'll be able to get by nicely and be able to make good educated guesses with the words I don't quite understand or writing I can't exactly read.
I do suggest this software. I've bought the smaller versions for family members as gifts over the past year and they've all seemed pleased with it, as well.
"Very, very good but also expensive", My previous German language experience came from an eight week German reading course I took about 5 years ago. The emphasis was not on speaking, but rather to give us the basic tools in order to begin the process of deciphering German texts. I've had a few other language classes since then, establishing me if not as a thorough polyglot at least as a someone well versed in language training from a variety of different teaching styles, approaches, and contexts.
I've tried to keep up with a number of these languages I've studied, with various success, and with various software help. Mostly the inexpensive kind. I've picked up the Instant Immersion disks (a great, inexpensive, entirely un-thorough approach), the Learn to Speak series (about the same, though with a lot more content).
Recently, to learn German for my studies I looked at more thorough programs and two stood out. The Rosetta Stone series and the Tell Me More. I noticed Tell Me More was getting great reviews and was less than half the price. Being a little financially strapped I skipped the trend and bought Tell Me More. And I'm very glad I did. It's an effective program that has pushed me quite along in learning the language.
Still, there was a tickle in my brain. Is Rosetta Stone really better?
Now, with Rosetta Stone German and Tell Me More German in hand I have an answer.
And yes, Rosetta Stone is the better program.
In some ways.
Really, I'd have to say these are quite different programs, rather than one being substantially better.
Tell Me More is a like a class in a box. There is a mix of exercises that help to build vocabulary, sentence structure, writing, pronunciation, and other aspects. Each section has a large mix of short lessons that reinforce the learning without becoming dull or tedious. Save yourself taking language classes by using Tell Me More.
Rosetta Stone is a lot less like taking a class. It's more like finding yourself on an island with a group of people who all only speak another shared language. And if you want to learn how to thrive on this island, then you follow their patient, but focused, teaching. The lessons advance by building on previous lessons, adding grammar and vocabulary in small increments without being separate focus. Rosetta Stone goes for whole learning, approaching the language as a whole rather than in separate topics. Also, there is a tracking system so that after a certain amount of days a review lesson pops up that makes sure what was learned a couple of weeks ago is still there. Good confidence boost too.
This approach sticks, and it is effective.
My only quibble is I'm not sure it's quite worth the amount of money they are asking. Indeed, if money isn't an issue then by all means go with Rosetta Stone. There are qualities that do set it apart, and it helps a person feel much more involved in the language and less like taking a class. I see it also as a continued resource way beyond the initial run through, providing a consistent platform to keep the language sharp.
The island analogy is also appropriate because Rosetta Stone doesn't have nearly the same amount of cultural exposure that Tell Me More does. The Tell Me More program offers more German (as in the country) exposure, along with Austria and Switzerland.
Tell Me More also has a more potent vocabulary push, especially early on. Rosetta Stone takes a long while to build a foundation and with this can become pretty repetitive.
But, if money is an issue Tell Me More is comparable in quality, without being nearly as expensive.
That's not a slam against the product quality of Rosetta Stone at all. It really is an extraordinary software, and revolutionizes language learning.
"Better than Pimsleur", The Rosetta Stone language system, for me at least, is far better than Pimsleur. Pimplseur only teaches oral skills; I need to be able to "see" words and have the visual re-enforce the spoken.
"Good for some", This product will allow you to communicate on a basic level in German. After completing the three levels you will still be at a beginner level. Do not buy this product expecting to become fluent in German.
"Simply a Great System - Highly Recommended", Rosetta Stone - German I have never used any of Rosetta Stones' products before, but I am familiar with the challenges of learning a new language (having taken Japanese for several years) and I was looking forward to giving this a try.
Rosettas Advantage: Rosetta uses immersion as it's main method, which basically means that you learn a language in that language, rather than presenting a concept or phrase in English and then providing the foreign language equivalent. I think Rosetta's approach is the right one as it provides a word or phrase with conceptual identifiers (within pictures) that seem (at least to me) to work much better than any other method I have tried.
Rossetta's approach is to start you off immediately in the language you are learning, in this case German, and you immediately start to associate the new words and phrases with their meaning. Rosetta does this in a pretty effective way, using pictures of people in situations where the words are used, allowing you to associate the words and items in your mind.
Where Other systems Fail: The reason the "presenting a phrase in English / then in another language" approach other systems and college courses use doesn't work well (in my opinion) is that there are many cases where there is no direct foreign equivalent. This is especially true with cultural-centric phrases like greetings and farewells that have developed and contracted over time in such a way that the meaning is much more than the translation. The other problem with teaching a foreign language in English is that you tend to rely on the translation in your head rather than "thinking" in the language you are speaking.
The Challenge: It is said that Rosetta is addictive, and I couldn't agree more. If you like a challenge (most language learners do), then you will have lots of fun with this. I found that I really didn't want to quit and challenged myself to do better with each lesson. Yes, eventually, your mind gets pretty tired and you will take a break, but I have to say it is really fun and you really feel like you've had a mental workout after (in a good way).
The system comes with audio CD's, which I think is really helpful, but I find I only used them to check them out, not necessarily in the car or at home. I think a great replacement or add-on to this feature would be some kind of iTunes subscription that let's you easily put these on an iPod or MP3 player. I would likely listen to the audio more while working or maybe if I want something in the background to occupy my mind a bit when doing tedious work. I would often do this with a Japanese radio station and found it helped me with picking out words from native speakers and using the language within the correct context.
I installed Rosetta Stone on a Mac with OSX Leopard and I had no problems at all. The only suggestion that I would make is that you be sure to restart after installation, just for safe measure. Since it interacts with hardware (via the included USB headset and mic), and requires activation of the software, it's a practice I have come to trust, regardless of the installation instructions and so far has treated me well.
The system comes with good instructions on installation and use, a headset, the installation CD's and the audio CD's. In fact, the documentation is above par in most respects. Kudos to Rosetta for that. The only issue I had is that the box everything comes in is small, which is great for those of us with environmental concerns, but this means the headset included can get a bit squished. In my case, one of the ear pieces was broken off in the box and didn't work. I found it uncomfortable to hear in only one ear although the mic seemed to work well. Lucky for me I had another around and used is (Creative Fatality Headset (Black) - http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Fatal1ty-Gaming-Headset-Black/dp/B001BDI9SU/ref=pd_bbs_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1225474432&sr=8-4 ) and this one worked very well.
Bottom Line: Having taken a few languages, this was, by far, one of the most fun experiences I have had. I find it stimulating and challenging with just the right mix of everything in it to keep everyone happy. For me, it sparked a whole new interest in German from my whole family. We all had fun with it together
Everyone learns differently, and I have spent quite a lot of time learning this in business as well. Methods that work for some, may not work well for others. I think Rosetta has found a "sweet spot" here and would recommend it to anyone except those that like a structured approach based in English.
All of this aside, Rosetta Stone shouldn't be your only tool in learning a language, and it's not intended to be. The culture is a great part of the language, and you should experience the culture at every opportunity to really start to understand how to speak fluently. You will never be "finished" learning a language. You are never done. As my Japanese teacher would say, "This is the beginning of a lifetime of learning". How true.
Armed with Rosetta, I think you'll be pretty well prepared for the lifetime learning a new language will bring. It is a perfect place to start.

"baby methods ... adult steps", Great product that utilizes a new method to teach and learn a foreign language. The fact that the US government (embassy staff), NASA, and others use this program would make one interested in investigating further. Rosetta Stone program is available in many languages, and can even be bought to be evaluated for six months (usually thru kiosk sales rep. at your local shopping mall).
You will be surprised how fun, easy, and quick this program is. With perseverance, dedication, and time one will be at a conversational level with this program in less than 1 year. Bis spater und Auf wiedersehen !!!
"Rosetta Stone Version 3; German Level 1, 2 and 3 Set with Audio Companion", Excellent product for learning a foreign language. Would highly recommend this or other languages to anyone interested in learning another language.
"The best language instruction program you can get", Rosetta Stone is the premier language instructional program, so the excellence of the German version is no surprise.
The format is the same as other Rosetta Stone products. There is NO ENGLISH. The system begins with a set a photos and the German work for one of the photos. It is you job to match the photo with the word (don't worry, there is a key you can hit to see what the word is for each pic). This forces you to connect the pic and word in your minds without the English translation. Another section of the program has you speak the word into the microphone/headset which is included (extra nice headset BTW), and then show you your pronunciation in "soundwaves" verses that of a native speaker. By altering you pronunciation, you can strive for speak with a minimal accent. Other exercises are of the typing and reading sort.
This is the best language instruction you can buy. Yes, it is extremely pricey, but I can attest to the fact that 2 months of this program far surpasses 3 years of college instruction.
"Excellent learning tool, but be sure of your purpose", I've become interested in going to Germany and although I know that English is spoken there, I'd like to be able to go off the beaten path and immerse myself in the culture. I'd also like to be able to understand the conversations of people around me. This is why I really was interested in Rosetta Stone versus a quick and dirty travel language CD.
This product allows you to customize it to your goals (read, write, listen, speak) through a very simple startup screen (which can be setup for different users) and then it automatically builds the lessons for you.
I find the lessons to be enjoyable and very useful. The speech recognition aspect is awesome. It lets you even customize how precise you want the software to grade your pronunciation.
Aside from the computer aspect, this product provides a whole set of CDs that complement the main software. This is great for reinforcing your learnings when you aren't in front of the computer.
The downsides of the product do NOT outweigh the upsides in my opinion. However, I should list a few for you. 1) It is pricey. 2) It doesn't allow you to run it on more than one computer (you can move it to a new computer, but you have to uninstall it from the first computer). 3) The included headset is a bit flimsy.
Bottom Line: If you are wanting to learn the language, excel when presented with multiple ways to learn it (visual, auditory, and written), and want to do it at your own pace, I really think this is a great option and can recommend it. If you are only wanting to pick up the bare minimums for surviving travel in Germnay and are on a budget, find another product that focuses on getting you into the basic phrases you'll need. Overall, a great product.
"Sehr gut!", I didn't have immediate expectations of being fluent or even conversant in German from using this program (that will be a much longer journey) - so I am rather pleased so far. I can understand many of the criticisms.
This product immerses you virtually into the language learning process - via conversation.
The program installs easily, and activiation is simple for all 3 levels. There is a USB headset & micrphone included - not going to replace you highend gaming headset, but it does the job. I have a long journey ahead of me to make progress, but I think this is a very good first step as a learning tool.
