Others say...
"Immersion School at Home!" I like learning foreign languages and I tried various ways of doing that - from learning on my own with a help of various audio cassettes and written materials, to attending a total immersion program abroad. I usually learned the language in a structured way by getting to know new words and learning grammar rules and trying to apply them in practice. Rosetta Stone's method is probably the closest one to learning language the "natural way" - the way children learn it. This means acquiring grammar instinctively, without actually learning the rules. I think this is a very useful learning tool for people wanting to learn the language on their own. It IS expensive, but considering the fact that this isn't just the usual audio CD with some supporting text but actually a fully blown computer program, with speech recognition technology, etc, I say it is well worth the price. It is actually a very cheep alternative to an immersion program abroad. FIFE STARS!
"Simply the best..." This is by far the best self-guided foreign language product on the market that I have used. I highly recommend it, it makes learning a foreign language much easier, and it is very intuitive to use.
"One of the best ways to learn a language." Everyone has seen the television commercials, the print adverts, and the magazine inserts...Rosetta stone is touted as the best way to learn a language. And you know what? Its true. Popping in the software and navigating its menus, lessons, and audio files, I was greatly impressed with the sheer volume of material. I took french quite a few years ago as a younger kid, and was amazed at how easy it was to pick it back up again. While I am nowhere near to speaking full conversational french, I feel that my language skills are improving the more and more that my wife and I use this product. The only way to really get real world experience with another language is to speak it all the time, everytime with a native speaker to help you with your conversation- but barring the possibility of that, this software is an amazing tool. I would happily pay the full price on this program, and am looking in to having my hospital get on board as a corporate partner so that we can begin learning spanish...many of our patients arent fluent in English. The only dissapointing thing about this progam is that it can only be installed on one computer. I find that to detract from the overall impression, hence- the 4 star review. After payiing upwards of 400$ for a program, I should be able to use it on as many devices (or within a set limit) that I want to. Limiting it to only one PC or notebook seems to be overly restrictive. The mp3 audio files are good for one the go, and I use them more frequently that I originally thought I would. One of the other cool things to do? Get a movie that you havent seen before, turn it to the language dubbed version and see of you can follow along. Just another step in the immersion process. Overall an amazing product, and only marred by the extreme restrictive installation permission. Other than that...I suggest you pick up a package in whatever language you wish to learn!
"learing French" I have been trying to learn French for the past couple of years without much luck. I found using a book boring and difficult to teach myself with. After the book I tried learning through a teacher, but that was time consuming and expensive. Since I have been using the Roestta Stone I am amazed at how fast and easy it is to learn the language. The way they structure the learning through photographs so you are not translating word for word is amazing.
"French Made Fun" Rosetta Stone's language software is fantastic. Their total immersion approach makes it feel like a play along game instead of learning a language. I had a bit of French in college, but despite the fact that it was a beginning class, students were already expected to know some French. The software outclasses the traditional class. Setup is easy and you can select the options for your level to go at your own pace. Seeing the images with text and hearing the native speaker really does allow for faster learning and you do use your own native ability to learn to better effect. The new Audio Companion CDs are an excellent reinforcement. They make it so easy to load them into a CD player or an iPod. You never feel as pressured to learn the language. I have always wanted to learn French and am loving doing so. The software is nicely packaged with a Quick Start guide, User's Guide, application software and three levels of language for beginning, intermediate and advanced. There are also four CDs for each level for the Audio Companion and an included headset with microphone. It is pricey, but worth it. With regular practice you will become proficient and the software interface is very user friendly. I highly recommend Rosetta Stone and will stick with them for my language learning needs.

What our customer's say!
"There are three blue bowls.", I toyed with Rosetta Stone years ago through a $20 intro package they had. It seemed promising, but the cost of the full package was and remains prohibitive for the casual learner. For professionals needing language training, I think this is an excellent package, but if starting cold, this would best complement classroom instruction. One other thing: for the money, you'd think the program would get you functional faster, e.g. travel french - where is the bathroom, i would like a glass of wine, etc. Instead, we have "the bicycles are yellow." Overall though, a very professional package.
"Rosetta Stone", Excellent. Instructions for use of teaching methods should be more explicit. Booklet with all words and phrases used in the lessons would be of help
"Excellent language learning tool", I got this to learn some French, but I haven't learned a single thing. That's because my wife got her hands on this software as soon as it arrived and I haven't ssen it since. She took French many years ago in high school and wanted to refresh her knowledge. She's been using the software at least a half hour a day for the last month and she says it is really great.
Rosetta Stone takes good and full advantage of computer technology (graphics, animation, video, audio, speech recognition) to assist in learning a new language. It is far more sophisticated than, say, a language teaching book transferred to a computer presentation. It is very interactive. The speech recognition is quite accurate and very helpful in improving the student's foreign speaking skills. It is fun to use and it's never a chore to go through the lessons.
The only concern about the product is a lack on explanation about some language concepts that would be new to someone who has never learned a non-English language before, such as masculine and feminine nouns and adjectives, and how adjectives are made plural if the corresponding noun is plural. But unless she missed something, my wife says these things are not explained anywhere. So someone that is unfamiliar those things might not be taught as well as possible.
"Excellent way to learn a language", This program is a great way to learn a language. The method of using pictures with the text helps you make associations and learn much faster and easier than just memorizing words. You do need to be self motivated but I found myself looking forward to the lessons. The program will automatically recommend to repeat a lesson if you make too many errors. I love that you can have up to 5 users so others can learn along with you and that makes it a good value for households that have several members who would like to learn the language. I think it would also be a great family activity and learning with others would be great for motivation and practice. The audio companion CDs are a big help to reinforce and practice what you have learned. I had no problems with the software installation and set up except for some reason the software could not detect my wireless connection and I had to register by phone.
"Best Language Learning Software Available", The concept of Rosetta Stone is simple - learn a language the same way our parents thought us through picture books. We are shown a photo and told what it is. We then say the word over and over until it is second-nature in our brain. When the photo comes up, we can easily identify it.
Unlike other programs, there is no need to memorize a ridiculously long phrase or sentence that doesn't mean anything to us at the moment. In Rosetta Stone, we start with simple objects and words. Then we build to phrases and sentences using those same objects that we learned about.
There is an included USB headset with mic so you can speak, analyze and compare your pronunciation with the voices on the program.
The interface is simple and easy. There is nothing to learn. You install the program, activate the levels depending on what you purchased and then create a user so that you can save and go back to where you left off.
Which means you work at your own pace.
The latest addition to Rosetta Stone learning software is the so-called Audio Companion. Unlike other learning software that simply comes in an audio CD that you pop into your vehicle to listen and hopefully learn, this Rosetta Stone Audio Companion is a supplementary to the program. Do not attempt to learn by simply listening to the CDs. These were created to assist your learning experience for words that have already been imprinted into your brain by way of visual association.
Like all other programs, this also has it's short-comings. Because Rosetta Stone immerses you right into the visual process, there are numerous times where you are fed phrases and sentences which only leave you wanting to ask questions on why it was constructed that why or when to leave out a letter in pronouncing a word which has slightly changed.
I would want to be able to CHAT with someone on the other end to help me understand further before I go on to the next level of learning. Isn't that the same way when we were younger. We always asked WHY so we can understand the rules and be corrected for proper speaking.
When I repeat the word, Rosetta Stone says I am correct. When I speak the same word to an actual friend who is native to the language I am not understood as much. I need to know when to pronounce certain letters and when not to. The program simply spoon feeds me the words. I can repeat a million times the word and boost the volume until my ears bleed, but for a person who speaks another language I need to know if there is a silent letter involved or if the letter is in fact pronounced but only in a subtle manner. You will know what I am saying when you get into the program itself.
Lastly, despite the so-called Dynamic Immersion, you will not be able to learn as much and as fast if there is no one else you can converse with in the process of learning. Like your parents who were constantly speaking to you in a language you don't understand, your 24 hour immersion and constant questioning is what makes you finally understand. With Rosetta Stone and all other program, your learning and inability to ask questions is what makes learning a second language slow and limited.
However, despite these I would strongly recommend Rosetta Stone as the only program to successfully make you understand another language in the fastest way possible. The price of the software is steep, but definitely worth it. It is there for you to learn and re-learn over and over.
Finally after installation, don't forget to check for software updates (if the software has not done so already).
Hope you enjoy learning a second language as much as I am learning right now with the help of Rosetta Stone.

"Awesome Product...Get the Homeschool Ed.", I'll try to keep this very short and sweet. RSF (rosetta stone french) is an extremely effective product. It's immersion techniques simply plays off the way that we've always learned in life, picture association. The lessons are pretty lengthy and thorough. I highly recommend that you buy this product. Before you actually consider buying though I strongly recommend that you buy the HS edition. Why? (1). It's $50 cheaper. (2). Not only does this product contain the same features as the PE but it contains excellent lesson guides to help you along in your studies. (3). You must buy a French-English (vice versa) dictionary. The pictures aren't quite obvious so you'll need a dictionary. Hope you guys enjoy!
"Speaking like a native!", I was terribly excited to receive this box of software; French was my first language now long-forgotten, and I've been aching to try my hand at picking the language up again. On TV, Rosetta Stone promises users of its products that they will be comfortable with any of their language courses in short order, citing their use by the US State Department, the US Army and others.
Well, time to give it a try. The yellow box's contents were a User's Guide, the usual assortment of user agreements, registration cards, a Quick Start guide, a small pamphlet on setting up the included USB headset on one's computer and of course, the software DVDs (one application disk and three language disks, one each for French levels 1, 2, and 3) along with Audio Companion CDs that serve as a complement to the software course--supposedly, these will help you practice what you've learned in the software and is meant to be played on a CD player or downloaded (as they put it) to an MP3 player.
In itself, impressive set if a little overwhelming, but I found the instructions rather straightforward and easy-to-use. Just following the instructions in the Quick Start guide was enough to have me operational on my within the hour. The headset installation instructions were equally as easy to follow on my Vista PC and there's even a French QWERTY keyboard overlay. The folks at Rosetta Stone have outdone themselves in this regard. There are far too many instances of software installation and use that get in the way of the software itself.
So, how did I find the software and did I learn some French? I admit freely that I was a bit skeptical about the company's claims. No grammar workbooks or textbooks, just what they call a "natural" way of learning through something called Dynamic Immersion, which sounds like being kicked off the side of the pool into the deep end, only less pleasant! Their admonition is to simply trust the method as it works without requiring translation. They promise that I will be speaking French immediately from the first lesson and that was no joke.
The levels are broken into units which are further subdivided into core lessons, focused activities and finally, a milestone. The program starts with a few questions about the user's goals which can revolve around both speaking and writing the language, just writing or just speaking. The recommended default is to focus on both speaking and writing, which is what I chose.
From the "home" screen, the user can see their progress along the lesson, the unit and the entire course. It's truly easy to use. The content is also incredible: you will either type responses, listening to and repeating after a speaker (which is scored as well) or choosing the correct answers from multiple-choices or typing out the proper sentence. In so doing, you find yourself picking up on vocabulary, proper pronunciation, writing and grammatical structure.
I have finished the first level and I'm looking forward to the second level as it is easy, but hard work if that makes sense. I haven't yet listened to the audio CDs, but if the software is anything to go by, my god. I am so impressed with the quality of the software and instruction that I am giving Rosetta Stone French the highest recommendations. Five, extremely deserved stars.
"Well, I'm learning!!", My company is planning on expanding to Canada, soon, and I thought that it would be a great "investment" to try the French version of Rosetta Stone.
I must say that it is making learning French as easy as possible, and I'm learning so much every day. I have learned so many different phrases, and learning everyday.
I'm sure it is going to come in very handy when we go live. Thanks RS for such a wonderful product!
"WORTH EVERY DIME! Can't recommend it enough.", Rosetta Stone uses immersion as an excellent way to learn, and further one's language skills. Incredibly user-friendly, this hands-on approach to learning language has launched me into my love and furth study of French.
STRENGTHS: I like that it has individual lessons - you get to review and use what you've learned. There is a good balance between new material and putting old material into use.
I love the photos associated with vocabulary and conversation. They are very clear - I never had any doubt what I was supposed to be doing.
Introduction of grammar is at a very reasonable pace. All skills are used - listen, type, repeat, etc.
It is very interactive. You get good feedback.
If you aren't able to take a French class, this is definitely worth the money - you WILL learn a lot of French if you put in the time and work.
The audio feedback feature really helped me with pronunciation - it helped me figure out what I had to do with my mouth to get the exact sounds and gave good feedback when I did.
WEAKNESS: You need a fast computer. Mine was kind of sluggish on my older Mac. This is a huge program, very memory - intense. That's a weakness of the computer, not the program.
I love this program and would highly recommend it to anyone who is motivated and probably at least teen age.
"Easy to Use", The Rosetta Stone program installed easily on my PC, and was up and running without any problems.
The lessons are easy to follow, and start you learning instantly.
I found it easy to follow the lessons and started absorbing the words and phrases with no difficulty.
I am looking forward to the more advanced lessons.
This is a much easier and more effective way to learn a language than other audio and computer programs I have tried.
