"Actually earns no stars...", I learned a lot from the convenient Amazon feature of allowing a peek into a book. I quickly realized that the reviewer who noted that any of the so-called-by-other-reviewers "edgy" and "hilarious" sentiments presented in this book can be put together with designs and aphabets offered in practically any other cross stitch book was correct. I'm saving my money for truly clever and helpful cross stitch books. If I want to cross stitch a nasty, bitchy or otherwise unhappy sentiment (and I'm not above wanting to do that sometimes, mind you) I don't need this book. It's lame.

"Perfect for the non-traditional with a foul mouth", While wandering through an antique store one day, I saw an aged, framed cross stitch pattern which said "No one likes a smart mouth" surrounded by the usual flowers and patterns. This caused me to wonder if there were any available patterns with similar or stronger sentiments. After an internet search, I stumbled upon the author's website and was immediately in love with the concept and the designs.

Simple to the point of annoyance for anyone beyond beginner level, this book presents more of an attitude towards cross-stitching than a compendium of patterns. A beginner (or someone like myself who learned in home economics 20+ years ago) will find everything they need to begin cranking out cranky designs which will find hilarity with like minded people. Advanced stitchers will still enjoy (if that is your type of humor) the dichotomy of traditional fluffy-bunny designs with road-rage sayings and can apply the ideas to more complicated patterns of their choosing.

All in all, this may not be for everyone, but for a dude looking for something to occupy his hands after quitting smoking, this was perfect. I know what everyone is getting for the holidays from me! Well, not Grandma...

"UGLY and CRASS", ADDENDUM: I must come across as quite arrogant and haughty. You find this review SO unhelpful. I stand by it though. If I were going to buy this book, I would want to read balanced opinions, not just glowing ones. But I apologize if I've so offended you. I just call 'em as I see 'em:


How delightful: hang on your wall or give someone you like a picture that says "Go F**k Yourself?" Classy!

If someone gave me one of these disgusting items, I'd throw it back in her face for the crass insult it is.

Like you, I also can't stand sickly-sweet Precious Moments drivel and have never stitched anything like those. But, apparently amazing, I have found hundreds of patterns that allow me to display skill in stitching and learn how to design. I'm proud to display these. I don't have to run around my house and hide them when children or people I respect come over.

Do you lovers of this book really use it as a coffee table book?

"Finally!", All the women in my family are very creative and artsy, every single one of them, except me, I tried every craft that looked remotely interesting and not a one panned out for me. And then I found this book, and I fell in love. My grandmother had done cross stitching for as long as I can remember, but died before she had a chance to teach me. So now I finally have my craft, its perfect for a tattooed domestic goddess such as myself!

"Kick-butt cross stitch", This books rocks my socks. I'm a novice cross stitcher and this book has some fun, basic designs you can make right away. It also has a great resource guide and other ideas to further you on your cross stitching career once you've got the basics. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to pick up cross stitching or those who are sick of stitching cutesy bunnies and flowers and such and are looking for something new and fun.

"Best cross-stitch book ever", I've been an embroiderer since I was 7. In all that time, it never occurred to me to even try counted cross-stitching. It just looked, for lack of a better phrase, like "baby stuff".

Not this. Julie Jackson has cured me, I think. Her cross stitching kits and charts mix pretty boring, traditional stuff with some eye-scorching language. I love them. I don't think I'd put any of these up until my little one is older - she's 5 1/2 now - but I'd make 'em. Oh yes. I would.

Ms. Jackson even gives charts for a few different alphabet styles, to allow you to make up your own in case these don't go quite far enough for you. If you're like me and haven't even bothered with counted cross-stitch, you owe it to yourself to at least give this book a try.

"Cross Stitch: Not Just for Old Ladies Anymore", When I started cross stitching to assist with my quitting smoking, my husband didn't really make fun of me because he knew it would help. When I continued to do it, he told me I was a 65-year old woman trapped in a 25 year old's body . . . . until this book came and I started stitching the patterns in it.

One of the downfalls is that lettering is all more or less the same "font" throughout the various sayings or patterns with little variation. However, the patterns are simple enough for a beginner, but fun enough that a seasoned pro would have the desire to revert back.

The best part of the book overrides all of it's (few) faults: Julie Jackson encourages you to go beyond the patterns. As a still relatively new stitcher, I bought the little packs at the craft store and was terrified to change or deviate from them for fear of being "wrong." This book encourages you to not only stitch the words you think or say when you make a mistake, but to personalize the craft and make the project your own.

Subversive Cross Stich has changed my husband's mind about cross stitch being just for old ladies, because if any old lady stitched any of the patterns in here, she'd be pretty damn cool in my book. And if she were appalled at the patterns, I'm sure Julie Jackson would tell her to "Kiss My Grits."


"Rocked my cross stitchin' world", I've loved the Subversive Cross Stitch since I stumbled across the page awhile back, but I hadn't gotten the chance in my crafting schedule to give a second thought to actually creating such lovalicious signs. Until a coworker told me how easy cross stitch is and the memories of my childhood cross stitching days flooded back. This is one of the easiest and fastest ways to start out your crafting career. Most craft shops have the canvas and thread that are required and the only other thing you need is this nifty little book, which contained all of my favourite sayings from the website including beeyotch with the little bees. I'm making my mom the Bitch in Kitchen for her Xmas present. Everyone looks at a completed cross stitch project like it's the hardest thing in the world, but this book makes it so easy and simple! Plus, who wouldn't get a good chuckle from some of these great sayings!

"Definitely a great purchase.", This book is great. I laughed so hard when I looked at all the designs. Usually when I buy a craft book there are a few things I won't make in it. Not this book! I'll definitely be stitching them all. Definitely worth my money.

"Cross Stitching for the Seriously Bent Individual", Love, love, love it. Where else will you find the ability to take a historial art form and moderize it = saying what you REALLY mean. Love it! Great laugh and great art!!!
