"From Linksys to Netgear"
Over the past few years, I used the Linksys WRT Speedbooster model with a range extender. While I do not understand much about computers, it was a G model for whatever that is worth. My Linksys wifi system collapsed, please see other review if necessary, even with online tech support, the purchase of a new Linksys wifi router, etc. Once I reached the 12 hour mark with Linksys tech support, I gave up. All of the system was removed from the house, and replaced simply with this router. Max from a local store was nice enough to explain this model costs a little more but the dual band G and N, again for what that is worth, is all I would need for a 4400 square ft home. He stated there would be no need for a booster, extra wifi cards, etc, so I took him for his word. I even got to return my "broken" Linksys system and put it towards the Netgear model. Because of poor tech support, Linksys is sending me a refurb model of the WRT 54 G router with expander, but I will put this out to a yard sell or throw it away.

Set up was amazingly easy compared to my previous system. No time so far on tech support hell, so that is a big plus. Program for set up was so easy, and my computers were online in less than 30 minutes. Also, this model is very pleasing to the eye with easy to read symbols, good size, and the ability to stand it up. The previous model was simply cheap, low profile, and did not work. So far, I must say this system is great! Hopefully, it will continue to do well in the coming months.

"worst router EVER"
This is the worst router and adapter I have ever owned. I have a ANCIENT Actiontec router that works better. Nothing but dropped connections and serious LAG time. Netgear customer service is THE WORST. They string you along for 3 months then offer to let you PURCHASE their lousy customer service for 85 dollars a year...or 69 dollars for 6 months. Great. I don't know what country their customer service reps are based in, but if you have trouble understanding a thick accent of some kind then don't waste your time calling. I haven't TIMED OUT on things since I had DIAL UP in the 90's. Run do not walk from this piece of JUNK!!!

"3 Words - DO NOT BUY!"
Waste of my time and money... Cat5 Cable defective... Tech support rude, as if I was inconviencing them with my questions. I owned this for all of one day. They tried to sell me additional tech support.

TRUST ME! YOU CAN DO BETTER!

"Upgrade everything"
I'm going to keep this simple. The router was fairly easy to set up, better security, works with my G printer. HOWEVER, if you still have a computer with USB 1.0 ports, wait until you get a new computer with USB 2.0 before upgrading to N. The preferred wireless adapter for this router is for a USB port... needs to be USB 2.0 for those to work. I didn't have USB 2 on either my XP laptop (2004) or XP desktop (2002). So I got Netgear's WN511T card for my laptop... and the WN311T adapter for the desktop. Both wireless N adapters, but they weren't always reliable, even at 54Mbps. They would drop in and out. NOW, I do have have a new Vista desktop... and I'm still using the WN311T, and everthing works flawlessly with the new computer. So I would only suggest to make sure you have newer machines before going Wireless N. The speed was noticibly better, even on the XPs when I was connected. Worth the investment, and I like the added security N gives you. I had talked to Netgear about my problems with the XP computers, but they couldn't offer me any solution that worked. For all the bad raps Vista gets... it seems more N ready than XP.

"Disappointed with performance and non-ease of use."
After years of faithful service from my old Netgear router, I upgraded to this Netgear router. It does not allow any of the wireless computers in the house to connect to it with their internal cards. The push button feature does not work and Netgear tech support confirmed that. I set up a password on the router, and one laptop connected for ten minutes to it with its internal card and then could not reestablish a connection to it. I purchased two of Netgear's USB N adapters and those connect to the router - not the push button though, only with a password.

The N band network has a smaller range than the G band. If I go more than twenty feet from the router, the N band connection drops, and the dual band adapter finds the G band network. If I search for available networks, I need to move closer to the router to find the N band as available. My house isn't so big, but this is a disappointment because the N band is about five times faster than G.

Any computer that is hard-wired into the router does get a fast, steady connection.

What our customer's say!

"Good....At First", I bought this router because I really was getting sick of my Belkin Wireless G router. I made the mistake of buying a Belkin router to start and thought I'd do my homework before buying another router. After extensive research this router seemed to be one of the best. I planned to use this router for playing Playstation 3 online and using my laptop online. I had a little trouble setting it up, but the fault was mine. After setting it up I was up and gaming online with my PS3 with at full speed. The next day, I was pulling in half the connection speed from the day earlier. I'm only pulling in 2 bars connection status. I live in an apartment with brick and plaster walls. Which is why I bought this router because it has RangeMax. The router is in my living room while my PS3 is at the other end of my apartment. Which is only about 50-60 feet away. My connection signal strength is only 68-70%. And I have Charter Digital Cable Gold Package. If you are looking to game online with PS3 you better go all out and don't expect to spend less than $200.00 unless the router is gonna be in the same room as your PS3. Great for laptop web surfing. Terrible for online Wi-Fi gaming.
I now why people say XBOX 360 is better. From my view XBOX LIVE beats Playstation 3's online network everyday of the week. Only get this router if you just wanna browse the web on your laptop.

"No, it really is junk.", Dazed by the problematic Linksys WRT54G wireless router (versions 5 and above), I thought I would give Netgear's newest Wireless-N router with the super coverage and interference-avoiding 5 GHz a shot. Of course if you want to take advantage of the full capabilities, you must have another Netgear card (i.e. RangeMax WNDA3100 Dual Band Wireless-N Adapter). See that link for a review of another sub-par Netgear performer.

Consistently lost connections, no helpful tech docs and I am well versed in network setup. This went back for a refund after one day.

"couple tweaks and it works great", The configuration was mostly straight-forward. My Apple TV had issues staying connected to the N side of the router. I switched it to a frequency in the middle of the N range from the low end of the N range and it took care of that issue. The only other issue I think was a problem with the client devices. They would list the N network, although they were only b/g capable. Paying attention to which SSID (since you set a different SSID for the N and G sides) was a simple resolution. The router had been solid. The lights in the top made my utility room look like a spacecraft landed in it, but a button push turns them off. I'd buy another one, if I needed one.

"Don't Buy Buggy", I'm into day 2 of trying to get this to work. The wireless doesn't work. Configuring multiple laptops is a pain. I was told that it's a firmware problem. Firmware was updated, and now wireless just shuts on and off. If your planning on hooking up a Mac, buy something else. Wireless won't work. I had a tech tell me that my mac didn't have an N card. I have a brand new MacBook Pro N-card come standard. When I read him the specs, he told me that I was mistaken about my configuration. As far as I can tell it has compatibility issues. The wireless seems to have compatibility issues even my PC. The wireless will only get you G speeds with a cable modem. Don't bother.

"Just set it up and works great so far...", just set this up last night and, although it was a little confusing, this was expected as 1) i have a mac and 2) i'm not so technically literate. but the fact that i got it up and running (correctly, apparently) with a password protected network and all--and this was my first time doing so on my own--should tell you the installation was pretty easy. seems to be working great, i'm definitely happy with my purchase (and i'm not easy to please!).

"Netgear RangeMax WNDR 3300 worth the money!", Easy to setup and it works. Previous Router was unable to sufficiently cope with interference from other wireless products. This one does! It is worth every penny.

"N & G", I wanted a wireless N router mainly for the 5Ghz band, as there are too many wireless hubs and computers around my apartment and have been facing some speed and connection issues. I thought of going for a dual band router so as to be compatible with old or cheaper wireless adapters.

My experience hasn't been impressive, the issues i face are :
1. the Wireless Connection drops quite often and needs reconnecting.
2. I am not sure if this is an issue with comcast or my router, but around midnight everyday, the service and the network go off for a while.

I do notice some advantage of the Wireless N, mainly streaming HD videos do not freeze as they used to earlier.

I was facing an intermittent connection problem, so wanted to fix it...
The issue was, it is not a permanent problem, so had to make changes and wait for a couple of hours to see if it worked...

my experience with customer care was impressive initially, i.e. short waits before talking to the representative, but soon it changed
had to wait half an hour before i could get to them...

then every call started with me giving the case number, they specifying a series of steps (starting from the beginning every time, frustrating) and no solution.
then i was busy for a week, and they said my old case expired since i hadn't called in 5 days, and a new case had to be created and had to start the whole troubleshooting process from the beginning. arghh.....

later on i gave up, changed the settings myself to not use WPA security, settled with the older WEP and now it is fine... but it means , the product is not functioning as it is supposed to...

DON:T BUY this product.... see if you can avoid dual band and go for only a 5 ghz router, and avoid this...

"Mixed results", I've used Netgear routers for years with mixed results. My very first router was the Netgear RT314, which is a wired 4-port router. That router performed flawlessly for a few years until I had the need for a wireless router. The next Netgear router I used is the Netgear WGR614v6. I call that router the "brick" as its all that its good for. The router setup page was extremely slow, and the connection dropped constantly. I've also owned numerous other routers from SMC, Dell, and Linksys, so have some basis for comparison, and have had lots of experience setting these things up.

SETUP: The Netgear RangeMax WNDR3300 N Router gave me fits. Initially, I tried setting it up from a Vista system via Firefox browser. After having everything configured, it was unable to get anything from my DSL modem. The interface was unbelievably laggy, similar to my experience with the RT314. What was supposed to be 15 minutes of setup ran over 2 hours before I gave up.

Fast forward a few weeks, I decided to give it another try, and replace an old Netgear FP114 that kept flaking out. This time I hooked it up to my laptop on WinXP Pro via Firefox 3. For some reason, Firefox loaded up the interface a bit slow. Using IE6 (I'm a bit slow to upgrade), I was able to configure it fine. Things seemed to work better. So theres some issues that I'm unaware of, or I just didn't configure it correctly.

GRADE: 2 stars

PERFORMANCE: The throughput on wired connections have been good as expected. However, wireless was disappointing. I was unable to get any wireless signal about 50 feet away, and thats utilizing the 802.11N Netgear USB stick that Netgear included for this review. Granted there are a few thick walls in the way, but with the new N-standard, I believe it should have been able to reach that distance at the very least! At least the wired connections have been stable.

Grade: 2 stars

Whats great about many modern routers is that you can install 3rd party firmware on it. Some of you may be asking yourself what that is. Firmware is pretty much the software interface that runs the router. There are groups that program their own software for these routers, adding features, and in some cases stability. (Note: Doing so will void your warranty). After finding the performance on this unit less than satisfactory, I decided to install DD-WRT. Wireless still doesn't have the range I'd like, but it has been running smoothly for over two weeks.

"Bad Product with Decent Customer Service", This router has awful range. At 3 feet from the router, my laptop gets 54 Mbps. At 50 feet, it's getting 5 Mbps. The connection drops at least once every twenty minutes. I called the customer service guys for help... they were helpful, did not transfer me around, but I did not get the problem resolved.

"Continued Freeze Ups Even After Tech Support", I bought a new home and my Netgear Rangemax MIMO Router, which has been wonderful and reliable for the last 3 years, wasn't able to push a strong signal to our second garage. With that said, I thought I would upgrade to N technology. I have had the WNDR3300 for about 3 weeks. I have tried everything to get this router to work properly but to no avail. Download the firmware upgrades - check. Contact tech support for help - check. Moved the position of the router - check. Changed the routers settings - check. One of my computers is a mere 30 feet away with no significant wall structure between it and the router. As with all four of my (brand new Dell) computers, a very good to strong signal is always indicated. However, over 50% of the time the internet will seemingly freeze at any given time and never recover unless rebooted. I am stumped on how to solve the problem. Needless to say, the router is going back.
