"Apple Airport Express"
Excellent product. Easy set-up for secure wireless 801.11n, WPA2. Also use on trips to setup wireless in hotels with Cat5-only access.

"Works as expected"
I purchased this to work with the 802.11g Airport Express that I bought a few years ago. I wanted to connect my Dish Network DVR to an Ethernet connection in my living room. I made this access point my main connection to the DSL line, and I used the older Express to extend the wireless network as well as to provide a wired jack in my family room for the DVR. It took some fiddling to get the two linked together, but now it works great. Its a little pricier than the competition, but it works well, and its great if you want to take it when you travel.

"Beautiful idea. Almost perfect."
Just received the AE from Amazon. Tried using the CD from the box, with no success.

Then used the instructions from Gadgethead. Got the AE up and running within 20 minutes.

My configuration:
Base computer: PC.
Software: Windows XP Pro. SP 2.
iTunes 8.0.1.11
Existing wireless network: 802.11-G
Router: Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router.
Remote Speakers: Logitech X-240.

So, I've always wanted to pipe music wirelessly. Just got the system up and running using instructions from Gadgethead.

Some comments:(These may seem pretty obvious to those in the know :)

1. If you already have a wireless router (like me), you may need an additional ethernet cable. I used a spare cable to connect the AE to my router additional slot (without disconnecting the router from the cable modem or the computer).

2. I was not paying attention to the EXACT type of encryption that my network uses (WEP and NOT WEP Transitional...). This was the biggest source of frustration during the setup.

3. Again, this device is definitely not Plug-and-Play!! Instructions from Gadgethead helped a great deal.

I am writing this review within the hour of setting up the AE for wireless music. If things go smoothly, I am planning to add more AEs to the network to get my printer and external hard drive truly networked!

"Airport Express + iPod/iPhone = Rival to $999 Sonos System!"
With the Airport Express, I have a music server experience to die for!

I have an iPhone 3G and my wife owns an iPod Touch. After downloading Apple's free "Remote" application for both i-devices and setting up the Airport Express, we can now use the Airport Express to wirelessly access our computer's music library from the comfort of our living room!

With the "Remote" application, the cover art of the currently playing song shows up on our i-devices, we can choose any of our playlists or search for artists or songs with their virtual keyboard and, naturally, any music we download or rip is instantly available for us to listen to!

What impressed me beyond the smooth, easy, attractive implementation of the Apple system is the price; It's similar to competing Sonos BU150 Multiroom Music System wireless digital music systems which costs up to $999!

Unlike the Sonos system, however, the Apple setup also lets you take your music WITH YOU in your pocket via your iPhone/iPod and use the PDA/phone/game & other application features of the i-devices!

If you already have an iPhone or iPod Touch, or even if you don't and are looking for a way to stream your iTunes music to a room in your house, the i-device/Airport Express combination make an impressive duo to accomplish the task!

"GREAT! easy install"
This is a great product! Arrived quickly and set up and was sooooo easy. The laptop connected right up and for my older G4 I needed an additional piece [as they don't make compatible airport cards any longer] which was the QuickerTek nNano 802.11n Wi-Fi USB Adapter. Once I had that we were good to go!

What our customer's say!

"Not bad but not stunning either", It works OK and has the nice Airtunes feature (allows you to stream audio from your Mac gadget to the router which has an headphones jack) which however only works with iTunes. Also the setup utility is a bit cumbersome. Definitely prefer a web based interface. The USB only supports a printer so no HDD can be hooked up. There's a number of better and cheaper routers out there but they ain't Apple ;)

"Amazing!", Music used to be a huge part of my life; I almost always had something playing on the stereo. Then we moved to a larger house, and it seemed like the music stopped. Our nicest stereo was in the living room. Our CD collection was upstairs, though some of it was on the computer in the office. And we spent most of our time in other parts of the house. It's long been a dream of mine to play the same music throughout the house; with the Airport Express, this dream became a reality, and I'm listening to music all of the time again.

I bought one to give it a try; this let me stream music from my Vista PC to the living room stereo on the same floor (while still playing via the PC speakers). I was hooked, and immediately copied the rest of our CDs to the computer.

After a few weeks, I bought another AirPort Express to stream the music to a pair of powered speakers upstairs (Creative Labs GigaWorks T40 Premium 2.0 Multimedia Speaker System with BasXPort Technology). All three music sources (the computer and the two Airport Express-connected speaker systems) are always in sync and drop outs have been very rare. It's really quite amazing; you can walk throughout the house and hear the same music everywhere. Of course you want to be able to control the music from where you are in the house, so I bought an Apple iPod touch 8 GB (2nd Generation) to use as a remote (the iPhone works as well). The whole setup is just so cool!

I recently bought a third Airport Express. I don't stream music through this one; I use it as a wireless bridge to allow an old iMac without a wireless card to access my network. This one performs flawlessly; you set it up and forget it. I could also stream music through this one if I had another pair of speakers to connect to it.

Although I think this is an amazing product, I almost docked it one star because the setup and interoperability with non-Apple hardware isn't as seamless as it should be.

I connected my first two Airport Expresses to a non-Apple Wireless G access point (a 2WIRE DSL router). For security reasons, I do not broadcast the SSID on my wireless network. I could not get the AirPort Expresses to join my network with the SSID broadcast off (even though I typed in the network name); I had to broadcast the SSID, join them to the network, then stop broadcasting the SSID. That wasn't that big of deal, but it took me at least 30 minutes to figure it out and it's not how it should work. These units also had a tendency to drop out of the AirPort utility software when they connected via this access point.

When I got the third one, I bought an Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (Gigabit) MB053LL/A to use as my main access point (these can't act as a bridge on a non-Apple wireless network). I set this up as Wireless-N only, I still use the old access point for B/G.

The third AirPort Express also had setup problems- the AirPort Utility software couldn't communicate with it until I did a factory reset. After the factory reset, it was easy as pie, though. I had no problems joining the AirPort Expresses to the Apple base station, even with the SSID broadcast turned off. So, in my experience, these do work with non-Apple access points, but they work much better with an Apple base station. On the plus side, the AirPort Utility works well under Windows; I don't think you need a Mac to get the most out of this.

Those minor hassles aside, this is the most impressive computing/home entertainment product that I've seen in a long time- it's somewhat expensive, but you get a lot of features for your money. Highly Recommended!

"Simple, clean, functional, Apple.", I have 3 Airport Expresses in my home with which I stream my music to multiple speakers through iTunes. This is one of the main features of the Airport Express and it works flawlessly. If you are a Mac/iTunes user and want a way to "party-up" your house with continuous music from room to room, this is the way to go. It's easy to use, much less expensive than a Sonos system, and these units are great to travel with if you need to make a quick wireless network.

"May Be Great?", I could probably go on for a long time about the Airport Express. As I've been going on with Apple Support. I use the AX to stream iTunes wirelessly to powered speakers. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Originally I thought it was either signal strength or interference causing the problem. But it's not necessarily so. One day perhaps with updates everything will be as it should, as it is with the wireless connection for my laptop, which works first time every time, never intermittent.

"PERFECT!", While it DID take 2 tries to get the configuration set up for this little gem, once I did, it's worked absolutely PERFECTLY for me. I use it primarily for connecting iTunes to my home stereo system, but a side-perk is the RJ45 jack in the unit which ALSO allows me to connect my X-BOX (in the same cabinet) to my wireless network. BONUS!

I used to have an RF transmitter/receiver designed specifically for MusicMatch, but when they were bought up (and subsequently destroyed) by Yahoo!, I switched to iTunes. The sound quality and consistency with this unit is unmatched. Most likely due to it actually sending signals over the WLAN, which allows for buffering, rather than just sending a radio signal.

If you're worried about 'range', don't be.. it's part of your WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network), so as long as it's plugged in within range, and other computers are within range, it'll be fine. I power up iTunes on my laptop and take it outside, upstairs... anywhere in my WLAN range, and the music never faulters.

Best thing is, you can use more than one of these... and connect one at a time, or any combination of all of them AT THE SAME TIME to your iTunes session... pumping music through ALL your stereos!

Highly recommend this little gem.

"Not Impressed", Purchased 3 of these units to work with a Linksys N router, Netgear N router, and an Apple N router in a large (6000+ sft) home. The Airport Expresses did not live up to our expectations. These units will work well if you already have a medium to strong wireless signal from your other routers. I had hoped the airport express would be able to boost a weak signal in small areas of the home, but without much luck. The airport express had trouble maintaining a connection to the network in any room with a weak signal. even when the express was able to connect to the network, the wireless signal produced was sub-par and did not even cover the room, let alone any rooms nearby. we tried multiple locations and orientations of these units to no avail. my recommendation would be to spend the couple extra bucks and get another airport extreme.

"Simple. Small. Fast. And it works... with proper setup", I use the Airport Express primarily with a MacBook Pro, but I also use it occasionally with an iMac. It works flawlessly and is very fast. Aside from its ability to share printers and iTunes, what I really like about this Apple product is the simple fact that it is so compact. At home, it adds wirelss connectivity to my DSL/router network, but I can easily slip it into my laptop case to take on the road. Then, if I'm at a location that only provides a wired network port... voila, I've got my own wireless network.

Here's a simple overview on setup options that may help clarify how to set up your wireless network. Some DSL/cable modems have the username and password already saved within them. In these cases, you'll use the Airport Utility application to set the Airport Express to "Bridge mode". Then, your computer uses "DHCP" in the Network preferences under the "TCP/IP" pane. Other DSL/cable modems pass along the username and password information from your computer or Airport each time you log in via PPPoe. If you have one of these types of connections, then you'll need to use the Airport Utility application to save the username and password into the Airport Express under the PPPoe pane (a one-time setup). Again, the wireless computer would use "DHCP" in the Network preferences under the "TCP/IP" pane.

"Only piece of equipment I've ever thrown away in frustration", Bought mine about three years ago. After 6 hours trying to make it work, I succeeded after following the advice on this forum and others. Then I bought a standard linksys wireless N router, decided to use WEP security, and my laptop would not recognize the AE again - even after another 4 hours of trying everything that had worked before. 80-90% of the world still uses Windows. The fact that Apple makes it so hard for Windows users is unacceptable - they should instead state it is a Mac only product so the rest of us don't waste our time.

"How simple", Just plug it it -- connect the internet cable -- the light turned green and instant wireless internet access in my daughters dorm room! Couldn't be simpler.

Did I tell you about connecting to my home stereo? Requires a special cable -- but now my iTunes is available throughout my house.
Apple AirPort Express Stereo Connection Kit with Monster Cables - Power / audio cable kit - mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm , mini-phone 3.5 mm / TOSLINK (M) - RCA, TOSLINK (M)
Great product!

"Ideal for Slingbox", The setup directions are almost useless, not unusual for consumer networking devices no matter who makes them. The most important thing to keep in mind is it takes time for the unit to connect to your router, just restarting after being powered off is slow. So don't get impatient.
The instructions included in the review by S. Monroe "gadgethead" are very helpful and will get the job done just follow them and allow time for the device to connect.
I use it to connect a Slingbox as well as the Air Tunes feature. It's perfect for both and is easily the most stable wireless access point I've used.
