"Didn't work out for me." The receiver came, I noticed I was getting static with it that I never got from the TX-SR604 I had. It also had the PS3 buzz, but that wasn't a big deal for me. So I got the unit replaced and same static and buzz, but then after a few days the receiver blew out. The amp entirely went out. I sent for another replacement but Amazon sent me an email saying they are just going to refund me because this is a wider spread problem then they originally thought.
"Mixed Feelings" I replaced my ten year old Sony 5.1 receiver with the Onkyo 606. The Onkyo cost half as much as the Sony and the sound was much better. The surround sound on my old system was weak. I'm blown away about how much better it is with the Onkyo. I'm still not sure if it is the technology, settings, or improved system setup.
Since my TV doesn't have HDMI connections, I was disspointed that the Onkyo doesn't down-convert HDMI to component. This is a problem for me since all my devices are HDMI or component and there are only two component inputs. In addtion, S-video and composite are not upconverted to component. Because of this, I have to run addtional cables to my TV and can't use the video switching function of the Onkyo as I would like.
The biggest issue I have had so far, and a big part of the reason I gave this a three instead of a four is the quality. The first Onkyo I purchased had a bad board and couldn't display all colors through one of the component connections. Onkyo customer support quickly identified the problem. Amazon was excellent and sent a replacement before they even recieved my return. I was really impressed with the way they managed the return. All shipping was paid for by Amazon. Well, the second receiver has video problems as well, the picture goes in and out with some programs. I verified that it wasn't the satellite reciever. Onkyo customer support wasn't so great this time. They basically blamed it on the Directv receiver even though it works fine when hooked directly to the TV. Amazon initially offered a refund only. However, I explained to them that I feel like I just got a couple of bad systems and would like to try one last one. They agreed and the third one is in the mail. After all the research I did on this, and given how highly recommended it is, I just don't won't to go with another receiver. And you can't beat this price.
In short, I love the receiver but hope the quality is better with my third try.
"Great receiver" Probably the best value out right now for any receiver. Has all the options and features of much more expensive units - a truly great buy.
7.1 sound along with 4 HDMI inputs make this hard to beat. And it sounds amazing.
"Quite A Performer!" After considerable shopping, reading of reviews, I decided on the Onkyo 606. I have been very pleased with its performance at all levels. As others have mentioned, it has inputs that will accommodate all of your needs that I can think of. Set up was easy, though thin fingers will help with speaker wire installation! Plenty of power to run my system (7.1). I was also influenced by the "hedge against the future" advantage of this unit. The Audyssey speaker calibration was easy to use and very effective in a room with some unique demands. It will calculate distance, volume, and tone of each speaker to create a full surround sound from the listening area. (You take 3 readings - not just one.) If you don't like the sound, you can redo the readings, or manually calibrate to suit your taste. The available Listening Modes are numerous & quite impressive, including some unique to Onkyo receivers (such as Modes for unplugged, rock, studio, classical, to TV shows set in a studio vs. cinema settings and game settings). I find the chart in the manual very helpful in choosing a mode for my listening or viewing choice. Unlike some receivers, the different Listening Modes are noticeably different from one another, giving you more choices for what sounds good to your ear.
Many of the reviews have focused on its video pluses, and there are many, but my primary use is for audio. (Though its upconversion of a DVD to an LG LCD was quite stunning via HDMI.) I have played FM stations, CD's,DIV Audio, and SACD's through this receiver and its range and power render a clear, accurate, balanced surround field. It can read the signal from an SACD via the HDMI cable, eliminating the need for the 5 or 7 analog cables usually required for multi channel devices (though it can take them, too). The 90 wts. per channel is more than enough to drive my Bose 601 floors, Bose 301 surrounds, and Bose 201 surround back speakers with plenty of oomph left for the subwoofer. I did tweak the center speaker a bit and dialog is clear and audible in all Listening modes.
I have had no problems with hum or noise that some have reported. Running hot? All receivers make heat, so allow some top space and exhaust for ventilation. I have about 6-8 inches above and leave a cabinet door open for extended play and have had no problems or heat issues.
This is a good receiver with tons of options and capabilities. For the price, it outperforms the field. I can recommend highly.
"Best unit for the money" My husband researched the individual units of our surround sound system and this receiver was in C-Net's top 5; Amazon had the best price by far and we could not be more pleased. The sound is incredible and set-up with our components was a snap. Word to the wise--if you use your PS3 as your Blu-Ray player, use the "game" input instead of the "DVD" input to get the sound right. It'll work using the DVD input, but not in surround sound!

What our customer's say!
"Very good, but beware of the HUMMM", After reading reviews and talking with sales reps, I decided on the Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver instead of the Yamaha. I am happy with my purchase as the Onkyo produces great sound and video and has many extras. However, the Onkyo has developed a loud and noticeable hummm. (I've had it about 2 months) Some of the reviews mentioned this, but I thought they were just the unfortunate few. Now, I'm one of them. I will take it in to an authorized Onkyo service repair center, but this is a pain. The repair center has already told me that the parts to fix this are backlogged for several weeks. If you buy the Onkyo 606, maybe you will be one of the fortunate few that don't have to deal with the HUMMMM.
"Great Value", before i go into the review let me state i own a Denon 3808, Onkyo 805, and this Onkyo 606
Out of all those 3 the 606 is the best value, with 4 hdmi input. that are capable of upconverting to 1080P. But there are some things that you don't get with with the 606 that you do with the 805. some of which include a power plug to plug into a fan ( if you don't already know onkyo's get VERY VERY hot) and you will want a small computer fan along and/or plenty of room to breathe (NO STACKING). As for power i challenge anyone to find speakers that it can't handle, you won't find any. The auto calibration system that they use in both the 606 and the 805 in considered by most to be the very best in the industry. the standalone version of the box that does what the reciever can do cost $1500
If you are just getting into the whole home theater rig or you are looking to replace a existing reciever, you won't regret the 606. i have owned Sony's, Panasonic's, Denon's, Onkyo's, and Poineer's. and out all of those Onkyo gives you the most for your money
"Easy Setup", Receiver is very easy to hook-up and setup. Audyssey option is fantastic and takes the complexity out of the installation process. Excellent sound in music or movies even with less than premium speakers. If you are looking for a receiver that is easy to use, easy to setup, and produces excellent audio quality than look no further!
"Very good deal", Amazon had a very good price, and delivered on time. Excellent service, as usual. The receiver itself is great. The HDMI switching works well, and so do all the audio decoders. For the price, one of the best deals 'today'.
"Sounds Great, Built Like a Tank....but read the manual about the Zone2 feature", I purchased the TX-SR606 to take advantage of its "Zone-2" feature. Zone 2 allows you to power a second set of speakers in a separate room (e.g., patio or garage). Unfortunately, Zone-2 will only work with Analog sources (like the AM/FM radio or Cassette Deck). Zone-2 will not work with digital sources (optical or coax connected devices) like a Digital Cable box or a Blu-Ray player. I like to listen to my TV or CD's (played on Blu-Ray) in other rooms and the receiver won't do this. By the way, on page 85 of manual, there is a small footnote indicating the unit won't support digital inputs on Zone-2. I wish I read this up front. Too bad, this thing is constructed superbly (like all Onkyo gear) and sounds great. Had to send it back.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Love this product BUT", Love this product BUT has problems playing Rock Band and Rock Band 2 on this device when using the HDMI (receiver will power off and red light will blink) using a PS3. Have no other problems with HDMI devices (have two dvd players hooked in and a cd player)
"Great Value Receiver with High End Connections / Performance", I purchased this receiver to replace an older Yamaha outdated with no HDMI connections. Obviously, just moving to the better connections would improve performance. But this receiver has slightly exceeded my expectations in this area. No, it is not for fanatics of A/V but great for the other 99.9% of us. I have not heard any humming and setup was easy. It does run hotter than any other receiver I have owned though. Not really a big deal for me though. I only have 5.1 so it was disappointing that I could not use the mic feature to dial in my speaker levels. Best I can tell, you have to have 7 speakers for it to work.
"Great Receiver for the $...", I have always been a big Yamaha fan, so when I started looking for a new receiver that was where I started. However in the interest of saving a few bucks a friend told me to take a look at the Onkyo receivers, and overall I have been quite happy with what I got. The SR606 has a tremendous amount of inputs and options for a low priced, mid level receiver and has better than expected overall quality. I could not find anything for the money that could compare!
PROS - Price, quality, inputs, and options (video up-convert!) CONS - Video cuts out every now and again on the HDMI pass through (only maybe a few seconds, which if you are in the heat of battle on xbox live you might get a little pissed)
"Nice for the price", Just a great deal for this receiver. 4-HDMI ports are excellent. Automatic speaker setup was a breeze. Switching DVD, Xbox 360 and DVR through receiver with few hickups. Sounds great too.
"Onkyo TX-SR606", I upgraded from an older model Onkyo. Very impressed. Love the fact that no matter what the input, it all comes out of one HDMI cable. The only annnoying thing is the green line that appears on the left and bottom borders when it upconverts the component 480p from my Wii.
