"I'm returning it today"
Yuck. I've used Dragon Naturally Speaking for windows and it's worked OK - not great, but at least its usable. This, however, is horrible. There's no ability to train it and correct its mistakes! I'm returning it today.

"Mac Speech runs flawlessly on Leopard with Intel core 2 duo!!"
After reading all of the "scary" reviews I was really unsure about purchasing MacScpeech, but my experience was one of extreme ease and definite satisfaction! The program installed effortlessly. It acclimated to my voice within a few short minutes and I was off and running! MacSpeech's accuracy is amazing! Only occasionally does it mistake a word, and that is usually because I used a specialized term not in it's data base or I forgot myself and used slang. Its fast too! Never has a problem keeping up!
If you have an aluminum Mac, which have Intel core duo processors, with 2.8 Ghz processing capability and 2GB of ram memory, you will have no problems. Anything slower and less sophisticated may have problems keeping up with MacSpeech.

"Read the thoughtful and varying reviews before buying"
MacSpeech Dictate

Out of a number of very thoughtful reviewers on this new MacSpeech Dictate, littlepb's provided an excellent insight into how the brain processes the spoken and written words differently. This neurological observation is THE major obstacle for most new users. littlepb's insightful recommendation on using this program interactively, could function for those who prefer to perfect (edit) as they gradually dictate paragraph after paragraph. Yes, good writing is mostly editing. However, this software lacks even a rudimentary learning curve, so initial inconveniences soon evolve into tedious, repetitive annoyances. For my particular 'stream of consciousness" dictating style, this software glitch would constantly interrupt the free flow of creative thought necessary from beginning to at least my third paragraph. Don't hold your breath for the necessary version 2 update, unless Nuance actually purchased the former iListen rather than simply licensing its Dragon Engine to the inept folks still at iListen/MacSpeech. For myself, I will follow NYTimes Pogue's recommendation to go Dragon 10 with VMware on my Mac intel. In truth, as littlepb implies, there may not be a single software answer for the various dictating/editing styles we use. When in doubt, look to a company's level of customer service as to your realistic guide to future, timely product improvements. Scott Winterbottom

"very useful"
I just got MacSpeech Dictate today, and am using it to type this review. I'm really impressed. I've tried to use voice dictation software before, but have never gotten it to work efficiently. Since I have cerebral palsy, typing is very difficult for me. MacSpeech Dictate is the first software I've found that actually helps me to use the computer faster. It doesn't seem to have any trouble with my slight speech impediment, and it's doing well as my voice gets tired. I would recommend this software to anyone with a disability who needs to be able to use the computer at a normal pace.

One note: the user guide that comes with the software is woefully inadequate. It's taken me most of the night to figure out how to do simple editing and formatting tasks. But once you get the hang of it, this is great stuff.

"Great product -- faster than Dragon Naturally Speaking!"
I would highly recommend this product for people who are wanting to talk vs. type for their computer. The product is easy to install and set-up. Since I can "teach it" it is getting better all of the time. I had Dragon Naturally Speaking and have found this product to be quicker, easier to use and more efficient. It works best in the notepad which adds an extra step to transfer it to the other documents I am working on, but since you basically have to edit it anyway it is an acceptable extra step.

What our customer's say!

"review", the software was for my sister in a hursing home.
she can't type very well, nor speak very well.
the software really helps her.
MacSpeech Dictate

" works beyond my expectations!", I purchased this product to get me through a temporary disability due to a severely broken left hand. I went with it based on the strength of recommendations by users in reviews like this. They sounded a little too good to be true, but I figured I would give it a try because I was truly desperate for help.

Now I cannot stop telling everybody that they should have one, regardless of whether or not they have a physical impairment that hinders their typing. MacSpeech Dictate is remarkably accurate in rendering one's speech into text that rapidly appears upon the computer screen. I am astonished at this, considering how quickly the training is to get the program to recognize one's voice -- a mere few minutes. A key virtue is that it works with any software application. Yes, you have to keep an eye on it for errors, but it is far easier to correct a few errors than to type the whole thing out by oneself. The effectiveness of this product forbodes a day when computers will no longer require keyboards!

My colleagues all ask me if the software can transcribe interviews -- I gave it a try, but without the ability to train the software with the interviewee's voice, the results are less than adequate. However, one can listen to the interview phrase by phrase, and then repeat them aloud using MacSpeech Dictate, and speedily transcribe it into the computer. And you can set up a voice profile for a research assistant who could do this step for you!

"Nowhere Near As Good As Dragon", Don't buy this product. I am a dedicated Mac user, and was using Dragon Naturally Speaking on Parallels. This software is completely inferior to Naturally Speaking, which is pretty awesome. Consider: there is no way to teach the computer directly to recognize new words that you speak, you can only upload them into the software by "showing" the program your documents. The baseline voice recognition is OK, but the lack of "tunability" to your voice is a key problem. Also there are other petty distractions, like you can't dictate and type within the same document easily--if you do this the program gets confused. Hard to believe Nuance would license their voice recognition engine to these jokers...it has really degraded the product as compared to the windows version (Naturally Speaking). Sadly, we must wait a few more years for the ideal Mac dictation software.

"I've been waiting for something like this!", I've been waiting for something like this --because I am an extremely slow typist -- and can't get my thoughts down on paper before I start self editing and constantly correcting my mistakes, which makes things go even slower. As a matter of fact I am speaking this review currently. I can see how this product would have real application for people who are not able to type for any particular reason such as arthritis or paralysis -- MacSpeech Dictate will even operate all the functions of your computer -- which Leopard will also do, but why not have the dictation capability also?
I have a lot of stories I want to tell from my childhood, but for me to sit down and type them out I feel would be impossible -- and this way I can just speak them as I remember them, and if I have to -- edit later. I bought this program in spite of some bad reviews I saw online because I figured that I'm not getting any better as a typist and this program can only get better and better -- which is not to say it's not pretty darn good already! As you can see, no mistakes!

"Worth Every Penny!", I have to do a lot of writing, and typing is not my strongest asset. I used to write a letter and then spend twice as much time correcting my typos. Now I just talk into a microphone, and 95% of what I say magically appears on the page.

Because I'm not focused on typing I am able to watch the screen and catch any errors, as they occur. I am simply amazed by how accurate the software is! As you can guess I have dictated this entire review, and there were no typing errors. What more can I say?

"Better than I expected", Most of the negative reviews of this product have to do with defective CDs that were shipped in the past. The software itself has been cited as superb - and I totally concur.

Hurt my back, so typing was very difficult. To keep up with work and email, I thought I'd try this out. I am EXTREMELY impressed. All I did was read some words on the screen for about 10 minutes and I was up and running. I followed their suggestion to have the software 'learn' from passages I created, and the accuracy kept improving. Took a little time to go through the user guide (which wasn't as huge as many other programs - and had some humorous touches) to learn some shortcuts and tips. My back is better, but I'm still using it. For long documents, it's actually easier than typing.

One last note, people who have used speech recognition software will say it's not as fast as typing. One thing to keep in mind is they're often comparing their typing after 20 years of practice to the software after 20 minutes of practice. Not fair. I was forced to use the software almost exclusively for two weeks - and became equally adept at it. VERY glad I bought it - it's impressive!

"Excellent Product", I've used Dragon on my PC for years. This product offers an equal for the Mac. It learns fast and has great accuracy. I've been 100% problem free since day one.

"New Review on Bad Comments for an Awesome Product", Written Sept 2008:
I did my homework. I read the reviews. All of them... good, bad, here and all over the net. Then, I contacted the company to get their side. For every bad review you'll find the facts are simple... a bad line of disks were burned for production and put on the shelves early on this year. It was unfortunate but the problem was eventually fixed, new disks were produced and the product worked.

I am a writer, trying my best to get my story out as quickly as possible because my fingers can never type faster than this movie plays in my head and my constant self-editing prevents me from achieving my goals. With MacSpeech Dictate, I have found a new way to overcome my obstacles. It is, and does, all the company claims on their site. I was able to speak as I normally would with the exception of having to "say" the punctuation... something quickly learned using the 15 minute training. I didn't have to slow down except to pause before and after each punctuation, again, no big deal.

So, if you have the need, a MAC computer with Intel inside, using MAC OS 10.4.11 or newer, and 2gb of memory or more, than feel good knowing this software might be the answer to your prayers. I am giving it both thumbs straight up.

"Not worth it yet", This product does not hold a candle to Dragon Naturallly Speaking. If you want great voice recognition use Parallel and Version 9 from Amazon. I use Version 7 ( I've had it for years). MacSpeech is no good because you can't correct mistakes it makes time after time. I use it to dictate reports and the vocabulary is not common and MacSpeech won't learn, Wait until they get it to learn - which they said a year ago was due in an upgrade. iListen was not great but it is better than this.

"Macspeech is unusable with other applications.", After I fixed the installation programs, I found that MacSpeech was extremely accurate when dictating text. The main problem I had with the software is that it is barely usable with other programs. It is capable of opening programs but that's about it. Since I am not much of a writer, except for school papers, I bought this software for regular application and desktop use.

For example, I was really excited about the fact that I might be able to speak to my computer to browse the Internet or to do tedious tasks like naming several files etc. I was hoping that I would be able to use applications like GarageBand or be able to create a playlist and burn it to a CD without even touching the keyboard.

This software rarely recognizes commands when using applications other than MacSpeech or when dictating text.

I've never used Dragon but I have seen demos of it on TV. From what i have seen on Dragon, the user easily switches between applications and uses all of them as easily as dictation.

Other than dictating text, this software is horrible.
