"Basic, but good. Short and Informative"
If you have basic poker knowledge (read the Phil Gordon's Green book) then this is a great follow-up. Even if you didn't read the Green book, you'll learn something reading this book. It's an easy read, entertaining, and has some good info. For a casual player who wants to get better but doesn't want to get too involved in poker theory, there's no beating Phil Gordon's Green and Blue book. For a serious player, it's still a good read if not a bit fluffy, like Phil Gordon himself. READ IT!

"Occasional gems but few and far between"
Phil Gordon claims that "The Little Blue Book" will teach you how to think about poker. I do not think his work lives up to that claim. The book is dedicated primarily to tournament analysis, with the first quarter of the book dedicated to cash game play.

If a book claims to teach you how to think about poker, then it firstly must provide a generic framework for thinking about poker problems and then it should use specific hand examples to show you how to apply that framework to make profitable decisions.

Gordon's book is a haphazardly assembled collection of hands along with his analysis, some of which is insightful and some of which is not. Some of his advice includes:

"Be careful when playing hands that are easily dominated - even drunks can play top two pair effectively"

"Do not underestimate the power of implied tilt odds. You can at times take the worst of it if a monster suckout will open a fire hose of angry tilting money"

"It's usually correct to slowplay when you flop an absolute monster"

"When a player who never bluffs makes a bet or a raise, you have to put him on a big hand"

To be fair to the book there are some good points inside but nothing that a solid intermediate poker player would not understand already. For a more comprehensive treatment of tournament poker, I would definitely recommend Harrington's three part poker series. I can't really recommend Gordon's book to any type of poker audience.

"Phil Gordon"
I have all of MR. Gordons books (3)....I enjoyed all of them...anyone who plays poker....should add them to their poker library...shari

"Real Poker Stories"
This is a great book for someone who knows the basics of Texas Hold 'Em, who has read some books on poker but found it hard to put their general rules of advice into effective play. Phil has found a form for combining real situations with the advice -- his stories around particular hands. Thoroughly enjoyed reading these stories and suspect you will as well.

"Good Pleasure Reading"
I am a little over half way through this book. I think it is similar to Harrington's (Harrington on Hold'em) style of writing about holdem in that it presents situations and takes you through the thought process of Gordon as he negotiates the hand. Campared to Harrington, Gordon's work is a little more to the point, a little less technical, and good pleasure reading. Each story has a little tip ("Key Analysis") at the end. I recommend it for anyone who loves the game and already has a lot of experience in playing and understands the fundamentals.

"Kinda like watching poker on TV only in book form.", If you like watching poker tournaments on TV then I think you will like this book. I read Phil Gordon's Little Green Book and really liked the segments where he described actual hands that he had played in the past and how they turned out, good or bad. I actually wanted more of that and this book is exactly that, more play by play action. I like the format and the way he gives you the opportunity to think about what you would do given the information he had at each turn of the hand. It is sort of like a practice book for what you may have learned in the Little Green Book. I definitely think you need to read the Green Book first.

"Very Disappointed", I bought this book after having read Phil Gordons Green Book on poker. Do not waste your money. While the Green Book has valuable information that WILL improve your game, the Blue Book is a bad sequel and provides very little useful information as it is only a diary of previous hands played by Phil in numerous situations. You will learn more from watching Poker After Dark and visually watching how hands are played out by professionals.

What really upset me about this book, was a hand that is described starting on page 73 and runs for 8 pages only to be told if you want to know the outcome of the hand to go to Phil Gordons website. I payed $22.00 for information in this book, not to be told to go to a website for the rest of the story.

"One of the best preparation books", Both Phil Gordon's little "green & blue" books I've purchased and given as gifts. Myself and family members have benefited and improved as players after reading these. They are practical and easy to understand and implement. I highly recommend these as must read or additions to any level poker player from beginner to advanced players.

"Gordon and Harrington far above the rest...", Phil Gordon's three book set rivals Harringtons' as the best poker books on the market. This one in particular goes through several hands and strategies as well as warnings on getting trapped or lazy whilst playing.

The Black and Green books are also great, in fact the green book might even be better than this one, but they are both must haves for someone that wants to improve their game.

"Not my style...", When learning something like poker I like my information straight foreword, not with a lot of embellishment. While studying each hand I had to remind myself what I was trying to learn that particular hand without being distracted by the anecdotes.

I'm sure many students will find this makes the learning more interesting but my goal when studying poker is to improve my game with the least amount of effort.

About a quarter of the way into this book I asked myself how would I be better served? Should I continue with Little Blue or would I get more out of re-reading books I had already studied like Harrington Vol I or Little Green.

About 5 problems into Harrington Vol I...there was my answer. Goodbye Little Blue.

Bottom line...maybe this is a great book but if your learning style is similar to mine...take a pass.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Gordon's Blue book", Gordon's recent Blue book may not be as instructive as his Green one but it is a great read. It is fun to review actual hands and see why they were played the way they were and what Phil might have done differently given hindsight. It is a perfect table or bathroom book. Each hand is about a 3/5 minute read so the book is easy to pick up and start new and read quickly and put down. Highly recommend.

"A fun but light read", Phil Gordon comes across like a fun guy to know and his hand descriptions are entertaining. But while these tales do contain insights, it is just disappointing compared to the dense-pack of detailed hand-analysis of Dan Harrington's books or the detailed theoretical work of David Sklansky.

What Gordon does do is communicate the concepts in a user-friendly "bumper sticker" manner. That might be more effective for some readers and I don't mean the bumper-sticker appellation as a put-down. Poker is played in real-time, without notes and calculators, and a KISS (Keep it Simple Stupid) memory system will help many players.

But no offense to Phil, Harrington is the gold standard.

"Essential to any poker library", This book much like the Little greem book (LGB) is very good. This is one of my favorite books, Phil effectivly brings you into his world and shows you what he does in many different situations. If you have already gone through the LGB this is a very good add on to that book and it will illustrate very effectively how phil plays his game and makes god knows how much $$. You should read the LGB before reading this one you'll get something out of it if you just read this, but for the most part you'll be missing out if you skip the LGB

"Good information", Buy this, and the little Green book, too. The more information you have, the better prepared you'll be at the table.

"Good book that gets you inside the mind of a pro....", I liked this book because it demonstrated and excellent player's strategy in real life situations. It illustrated many important points from the inside and was very readable. Some reviewers criticized that the approach was superficial. Perhaps this is true and it is also true that some of the strategy presented was obvious. However, the book was entertaining overall and I feel I profited from reading it. What I most enjoyed was getting a feel for a great player's thinking.

I am an amateur Texas Hold'em player, so I may not be the best judge. However, this book really was useful and I feel I learned a lot by following along and picking up principles from real life situations. This approach resonated with me more than mere theoretical principles and held my interest much more than that type of book.
