What our customer's say!
"Good sniper action", A very good fourth installment for Marine Sharpshooter. The weapons are boss, and you even have a silenced pistol. Imagine that! I used the silenced pistol quite a bit for stealth situations, but sometimes it is to your advantage to draw enemies towards you. Since setting alarms does not cause your mission to fail, you don't really need the silenced pistol, but it is a lot of fun especially on night missions. I found the movement a bit restrictive for my taste as a lot of positions I would have liked to take it just won't allow you to move to. Long range shots are really fun too especially in a flat area where you can hide in grass from enemies who approach you after a first kill. You will find that the enemies have much better eyesight and hearing than you do. Some can even see you through trees which I thought was unreal, but added to the challenge altogether. There is plenty of ammo to be picked up and med kits too. It plays very well on Windows Vista. If you like sniper strategy, I would recommend it.
"Marine Sharpshooter Locked and Loaded", I like games with choice of weapons. Non in this game. Almost no freedom of range. The enemy is able to shoot thru hills and your not. Just a bad game. I have Marine sharpshooters II and 3 excellent.
"Why didn't Jarhead Games do this game?", Well, I just finished "Marine Sharpshooter 4". I really enjoyed "Marine Sharpshooter 2 and 3, so I was really looking forward to this one.Unfortunately, it appears that Jarhead Games Studio is no longer associated with the title. From what I can gather, MS4 was developed by Groove Games' in-house team.
The first four levels were pure misery. I've never ever played such unforgivingly and unapologetically linear levels before. For a sniper game, this is unforgiveable. Walk down the valley (you can't under any circumstances climb up the sides) until you spot some bad guys. now, even if there is a bunch of rocks or an outcropping near you, you CANNOT climb upon them to get a better sniping position. Even though they are easy low enough to jump upon. The designers deliberately put up invisible walls ALL OVER this damn game to make it impossible to play the game properly. You cannot wade through a river. Invisible walls. You cannot fall of a cliff. You CAN run too fast down a hill, however, which will cause loss of health. I repeatedly fought back urges to quit the game and uninstall it. And yet I persisted.
And my patience finally paid off. Sort of. Beginning with Mission 5, things open up a bit, and you come upon groups of buildings and small military installations to clear out. My interest renewed a bit. I enjoy clearing out enemy installations.
Another anomaly appeared. I could not climb ladders into sniper towers or anywhere else.Except for one single ladder on level 8. That's it. That's the only ladder you can climb in the whole game, and that ladder only took me to a low rooftop, and it didn't do me any good, since I'd already cleared the area.
My spotter didn't do a damn thing except get in the way. I don't think he managed to kill a single enemy, though he was firing off bursts left and right. At least in the earlier games, it was kind of fun to go after him when he wandered off. It was an AI glitch in MS3, but it at least showed there was an AI at work. Not so here. If he says anything in MS, it's scripted. And he never gets lost. He's always right there, following you around everywhere.
Even in narrow dead-end hallways, where you need to turn around and go back, but you can't, because he stands there and won't move out of your way.
Buildings: It took a few minutes to realize this, but after I first started encountering the buildings and bases, I began to recognize the building architecture. These were the exact same set of cookie-cutter buildings used in MS3! Only in MS3, these buildings were arranged in an interesting way, conducive to gameplay, and also, the buildings in MS3 were used to make some very large towns.
And as long as MS4 was using the buildings from MS3, why didn't they use them all? Instead, they only used about 4 models. I suppose the others wouldn't fit the setting or something, but I distinctly remember having a LOT of fun in MS3 climbing to the 2nd floors, third floors, and rooftops of many buildings to shoot enemies in other buildings far away. Sure, they were cookie-cutter buildings, but at least MS3 got the gameplay right.
Each level of MS4, beginning with level 5 got a little better, right up until level 10, which was the last. And it was exactly right then that I was beginning to see a bit of potential in the level design. Levels 8, 9, and 10 had some nice, open areas, and decent enemy placement.
Jarhead Games, where are you? Why did you not do this game?
When I finished, I went and viewed the credits, and didn't recognize any Jarhead names. No developer was listed.
I also found it amusing that the Art Director was listed as "Alan Smithee". That alone should tell you all you need to know. And if you don't know who Alan Smithee is, check it out on the Wikipedia. I'm giving this game 2 stars instead of just one, because there were 3 levels that I thought were designed decently, though even those weren't terrific. I'm disappointed as hell. I really liked MS 2 and 3. I've never played the first game, though I intend to now. If you're new to this series, start with any of those 3 games. NOT this one.
"marine 4 sharpshooter review", This fps game is a piece of caca! The previous version was a much better game! This game is a joke, and the spotter is useless. I don't know what has gone wrong with the pc gaming industry, but its deplorable. Don't waste your money on this offering, instead go to Burger King and buy yourself a Whopper combo. You'll enjoy that a whole lot more than this stupid game!!!
"Thank me later", May as well warn everyone.
Yeah. It's absolutely horrible. I can forgive crappy voice acting and anything not gameplay related. Hell, I don't mind crappy gfx if the gameplay makes up for it. The gameplay is horrible. First, you need to run all the time because the areas are so big. You might say, but wait, a sniper game, it's good that the areas are big... Not when they are only in a north south direction. You're always in a trench and always going forward. There is no alternate route to anything.
You can have 5 guards standing in a bunch. You headshot one and the other four just stand there. Shoot another, same. Shoot another, the last too run around in a circle and then stop.
If anyone hears you running, you hear them say so... as a whisper... as they are standing 200 yards away. So you don't know if there is someone else closer or not. Look at the radar, there isn't. I just heard a 200 yard whisper.
The AI can shoot through trees and foliage without missing you even if you can't see them. Which is not a problem for long as your aiming reticule goes red when there's an enemy in it's sights. I've killed plenty of bad guy through trees without actually seeing them. The game uses ragdoll physics, I think, except it's not ragdoll. It's like, euh, well let me give you an example. I see a guard tower. I shoot the guy in the guard tower and miss his head(btw, head, one shot kill, neck to feet, two shots, kill) but get his shoulder. Shoot again, get his head. He does a sideways flip with his head as the pivot point and his body goes straight up in a loop. His feet get caught in the ceiling of the guard tower and he just hangs there... Wit his leg clipped through the roof. Just horrible.
AI surprises you around a corner, oh nos! He just stands there until you kill him.
Oh btw, you have an AI companion most of the time... He doesn't actually do anything except follow you.
Just no. Not a single reason to play this game.
.5 out of 8 tentacles (.5 because I am sure someone somewhere could mess it up even more)
You might need this...
