Others say...
"Not worth the cost!" I purchased the ICD-UX70 because I need a way to take quick notes at work and my wife wants a recorder that she can use while she teaches from time to time.
Pro: Small, light weight, good close up audio recording, Stores as MP3 files, audio files have good sound when played on a computer.
Con: Integrated speaker, screen size, user interface. The speaker on the unit is worthless!! The only way to hear playback is to be in a quiet room and put the recorder to your ear or use the supplied head phones. The recorder will also pickup each time you touch the device. Simply pushing the stop button will be picked up on tape and over power what is being recorded.
Summary: I would not recommend this recorder unless you are only going to listen to files on your computer or with headphones and never touch it while recording.
"Expectations Met & Exceeded." The Sony ICDUX70 Digital Voice/MP3 Recorder has met and exceeded my expectations. I used it to record stories being told by Old and Distant relatives about the life and times they've experience. I've transfered these audio files to my computer and likewise copied MP3 music from my computer to the ICDUX70. It is a joy and user friendly. The small size makes it convenient to put in your shirt pocket to record casual converations or sales pitches for later review. However the small size, for me, has two drawbacks. I have to wear my glasses in order to use the device and it is too darn easy to loose it. I lost one, bit the bullet and got a 2nd one. Love it.
"Depends on your needs" I think your reaction to this recorder will be based on your needs. I bought an Olympus (which I LOVED!) but I could NOT get it to transfer the files to my Mac - actually I tried with three different Macs. I don't listen to the files from the recorder, so I don't care about the internal speaker at all. I am reading teacher recording lessons for listening back to for instructional purposes. I also agree that the file naming and organization lacks, but as far as the recording, use of plug-in and transfer files and use of the functions that I need, the recorder works fine.
"Junk, Junk, Junk" Piece of plastic cr*p. Purchased it at Staples and decided to return it within two minutes of playing around with it
You can't hear anything
The buttons are cheap and will fall off quickly
The sound is horrendous
The microphones can't pick up anything outside of a foot.
The menu is unreadable and a disaster.
If you touch the main control button the recorder goes into another mode
Save your money. Do not buy this! You have been thoroughly warned!!!
"A very nice little recorder" I've been a heavy user of digital voice recorders in the past for noting down ideas when I'm in bed (and the lights are out -- no paper), and for when I'm driving. I don't use it for much else, but when I do use it, I tend to use it a lot.
I started out with Sony, then went to Olympus, and now I'm back to Sony again.
This little unit is my favorite so far. Transferring sound to my Mac couldn't possibly be easier. The size and weight are the best yet, as is the recording length.
Where I ding this little marvel is in a few areas: The buttons are too tiny, and too similar. The first Sony I use had a large and square record button, compared to small round buttons for everything else. Based on everything I've used so far, this is the "right" design; why Sony used all tiny round buttons for the UX70 I'll never know, but it forces me to check and recheck myself to see which buttons I'm really pushing.
Battery life is absolutely terrible. The worst I've ever used. And I don't mean continuous recording length (which is probably what the unit is designed to excel at). I mean the situation where you leave a fresh battery in the unit for a month, and then pick it up hoping to quickly jot down a voice note. I'm using high-capacity (2500 mAh) rechargeable AAAs, and these things can't even last *two weeks*. And that's with the unit on "Hold" the entire time!! This makes it completely useless as a "there when you need it" recorder, and I think it's going to make me get rid of it. My only option right now is to carry about the battery separately, but since the startup time for this unit is so long, it means I'm almost sure to forget the idea that I wanted to jot down in the first place.
The Olympus DS-2 shares this "passive life sucking" trait, whereas my first Sony did not. I bought this Sony thinking that I could count on them, but I guess my usage pattern is not very common?
The last negative is the internal speaker. Basically you should plan on never using it, or using it merely to confirm the fact that you did actually record something. However, the poor sound quality is unrelated to the quality of the recording itself, as playback on a computer will show.
If I could have long battery life (my first Sony would go 6 months without having to change two AAAs), then I would love this little guy. But in reality it just frustrates me that nearly every time I reach to use it, the battery has been completely drained. And this when it was supposedly "off" too. Leaving the display on, it doesn't even make it much longer than a week.

What our customer's say!
"easy to use", the voice recorder is easy to use and is reasonable on battery useage and even better because you can download the mp3 directly to your Mac or PC. I used this for taking audio notes during my classes and find that it works great.
"DigiVoice Recorder very good", Nicely packaged and priced. Used for classroom lecture recordings. Pretty good quality capture and plug-in to computer is a needed feature. Display characters are a bit small but readable in good light. Overall easy to use.
"Great functionality, way too slow startup for quick dictation.", Do you remember the old fashioned tape recorders that you started by just pressing the record and play buttons at the same time? I'm starting to miss that simplicity as the UX70 can take quite a while to start a recording.
As others have mentioned, this guy has a problem with passive battery power sucking. If I leave a brand new duracell AA battery in it, within a few weeks it will be completely drained, even with the ux70 hold switch turned on. So unless you are using this every day, you really need to keep the battery out until you use it. BTW, I only get approx 3-4 hours of recording out of a fresh battery, much less than the 10 hours the instructions say I should get. There's clearly some battery gremlins in this thing that haven't been tamed.
This issue is compounded by the fact that the clock loses its settings after just a few minutes of no battery. And to cap off the hassle, it takes approx 15 seconds for this thing to boot up whenever you haven't touched it for a little while.
So say you're driving along and you get a great idea that you want to dictate. The procedure is: 1. Open the battery door, find the battery, insert, and close the battery door. 2. Press any button to initiate the 15 second or so boot up. 3. Spend a minute setting the date and clock 4. Take a look at it to find the record button, which feels exactly like all the other buttons, and press it. 5. Take a look at the display to confirm it's recording; if you press the record button at the wrong time (e.g. during bootup) then it won't be recording. If you pressed the record button a second time it'll be paused. You really need to confirm visually that it's recording.
So you need at least a 1-2 minutes of your full attention to get this thing up and running. I really miss the old recorders where you could just hold down the record and play buttons and you'd know it was running by feeling the motor grinding away.
Even if you keep the battery in all the time, you still have the 15 second bootup time to deal with.
Another issue is that the internal microphone picks up and magnifies any rubbing or jostling movement, so you really should use an external microphone unless you'll be setting it down undisturbed.
I did lots of research on microphones and I found the Olympus microphones are the best deals. Note that the UX70 does provide power so it is okay to use the Olympus mikes that require power. I have used and recommend both of the following for use with this: Olympus ME-15 microphone is the lapel mike, best for general use. Olympus TP-7 microphone allows you to record phone calls, even on cell phones because it sits in your ear.
You won't go wrong with this recorder and those two mikes, as long as you don't need to start recording on the spur of the moment.
"Works well as a music recorder", I bought this unit hoping that I could get decent recordings of live music. I'm very pleased with the fidelity of music recorded in the ST mode, even when using the tiny built-in mic. The sound quality rivals that of the Tascam DR1, which I have used, and many consider the first choice in digital audio recorders (and twice the price of the Sony unit). The unit also works well as an MP3 player, though there is no shuffle mode. The spring-loaded menu navigation button seems cheezy, but I'll give the Sony engineers the benefit of the doubt on that.
"awful speaker", I love the Sony ICDUX70, I use mine in college lectures. I make sure to sit up front (or have a friend who sits up front record for me). My preference is the higher quality monaural (non-stereo) setting since I have no use for stereo sound but I still want quality. The only true complaint I have is the ATROCIOUS speaker on the back! It is basically impossible to hear or truly understand anything coming from it, the first time I played something I almost returned the recorder. When you use headphones or earbuds, though, it sounds excellent.
The time it takes to start-up is a little long also, but I tend to be early for class so this was not a problem for me.

"Sony Digital Recorder", It does everything I expected and more...And the voice recordings are so clear that no one has any problem understanding my voice because I am teaching English and Chinese both. Thank you so much for making this product available on Amazon. Nancy Aki
"ICD-UX70", As stated in other reviews, the internal speaker is TOTALLY USLESS. I'm returning the recorder.
"Awesome recorder", This recorder is great. I use it during my music class so I can record our session. Mic is sensitive enough to pick up the piano and my voice. It's a little sensitive so I lay it on the piano. Amazingly you don't hear the vibrations from the piano. I love that you can just plug this to your computer via USB and drag and drop the files from the recorder to my PC. This product works well for me. I love it.
"Basically Not Usable, What a Disappointment", I was so thrilled with the idea of being able to record MP3 style. And, to a limited extent, I have been able to do this. But, I was up against my first problem when I went to instruction #1 and could not set the clock properly. Writing tech support was of no help. Now I am finding the instruction manual just does not correlate with how this works, and I am at a loss currently as to how to set the mic sensitivity, how to adjust the volume. I have owned many electronic products, but this is the first time I am up against either/or the manual or tech support being of no help in guiding me how to use this product. Sorry to say, but because of this issue, I am afraid this item will be junked soon. Too bad. It has so much potential. What a waste.
"Great features, good value", I bought this at Frys on sale for 30 percent off the sug. retail price. Unfortunately within the first week, the 4 way selector broke/died as the internal spring mechanism failed rendering this device useless. Thankfully, I simply exchanged it at the store I bought it from. It failed while just being in my pocket but my pockets are full of lots of things.
As others mentioned, the external speaker is junk, but the sound with the supplied earphones is decent and with a good set of ear/head phones, both music and voice recordings sound great. I bought this to create podcasts and make voice notes so having it play/record in mp3 was a main criteria for buying it. The 1gb of memory is plenty for my podcasting needs and for listening to other podcasts and music.
I'm now looking into buying an external mic for this device. I guess it could be considered a bit fragile and the ex. speaker is not good so I'd deducting 1 star for each of these. If it holds up 6 months, I'll add a star and really to be honest, the ex. speaker should be only about a 1/4-1/2 star deduction as you can hook it up to an external speaker source if you want good sound.
The folder/file system is very limited as you cannot have subfolders. Well you can, but the device will not access sub-directories.
This thing is small, well featured, great value, well made (exception noted) and I can recommend this IC recorder.
