Others say...
"VISTA so far Rules!!! That is for a system with high Memory and Processor." I upgraded my system with Windows Vista Ultimate with SP1 and it came with my new Dell XPS 420. Have to say that for a system with Duo Core and 3.16 GHz and 4Mbs Ram, it runs so far much more smoothly and with finesse that Windows XP Pro. The only first drawback is the overwhelming feeling I got thinking, "Yikes, what have I done? I'm going to have to learn a brand new system and I have no idea if any of my software will work."
That concern seemed to be addressed very quickly when I began to install my apps and ran them without a hiccup or the dreaded "Blue Screen of I need to buy Depends right away!"
Granted, I have yet to fully immerse myself in all of the functions and run it at its peek potential, but so far I'm encouraged with the ease of use and the ability to perform similar functions that I became use to with Windows XP Pro.
I do believe that for systems that are running a Pentium 4 with less than 3.2 GHz or Processing power as well as robust memory with 4 gigs, I can see how the many complaints about the OS would be very valid. I haven't read all of the troubles, but it does stand to reason that unless you have a system comparable to the hungry needs of Vista, the experience would most likely be frustrating and hair pulling to say the least. One friend ran it with his system of 3 years and it was definitely SLOWER than Windows XP Pro and was a waist of time for him.
By the way, off topic so I apologize, but if you're purchasing a Dell desktop system with Vista Ultimate and the sales rep tells you that Ultimate comes with a CD for Windows XP Pro, or that you have download rights, it's all bull. The only systems that Microsoft is allowing rights for are XPS systems for Gaming only. I was lied to by 5 reps who each gave me a different story. Fortunately XP Pro can be obtained legally and cheaply from other vendors and that I also am fully satisfied with Vista for my Setup.
I hope this helps.
Cheers.
"Windows Vista Ultimate with SP1" Vista is far the best operating system MS has put on the market. I have used all of them since the first issue and I am really happy I have migrated to Vista Ultimate. With kind regards, Branko
"Enjoyable, with buggy character" Along the same tune of many others, Vista Ultimate has its perks, but hardly makes for a compelling reason to upgrade from XP.
I switched from XP to this version of Vista a few weeks back and am still in the process of acclimation. Although Aero is very nice and pretty, it clearly comes at a price as this system does run slower with this OS.
Also, I had a ton of programs that worked fine on XP, including a mouse gesture program I lived with on my old system, that are useless on Vista - they just don't work. On top, as has been stated to death, Vista prompts you for agreement every time you want to download or update pretty much anything.
Another annoyance, if the computer happens to go to sleep, it'll take close to 30 seconds to go back to normal, as I have to wait for the computer to register my keyboard strokes and reconnect to the internet. This is pretty annoying, and coming from a brand new Dell system by the way.
Lastly, not sure Ultimate is worth the extra dollars, unless you're on a laptop and need the encryption feature, or don't already use some other programs to remote access your system or backup the disk image, which at my office we already did before Vista. I'd suggest considering one of the other cheaper versions, which for most consumers is likely to suffice.
"It's OK" Not crazy about Vista- it keeps asking if I want to leave this page, etc etc etc- It was fairly easy to install despite other's complaints about the complexity. My computer fared well without issues.

"Good product, but not without flaws." As has been reported by many other reviewers, there are significant problems with Vista. Yet despite its flaws, it is a great user friendly product, which explains in large part its continued dominance as the desktop operating system.

What our customer's say!
"Best", Just bought this for my new system and I just love it. It's not good if you have a older computer.
"Windows Vista SP1 - A Program that can drive a Person to the Point of Insanity", After purchasing Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista Ultimate 1 1/2 years ago, I waited month after month for the so-called Windows Vista SP1 version to "automatically" update itself. According to Microsoft this is the best, safest and most recommended way to UPDATE to SP1.
MISSION FINALLY ACCOMPLISHED!
Now, to my DISBELIEF, I can NO LONGER open two Excel files in their own separate Windows, in order to work on both files at the same time. I spent hours trying to find and understand how to go about solving this problem. I found a few simple solutions to solve this problem and NONE OF THEM WORKED! After 8 agonizing hours I finally figured out how to solve this problem. I can hardly wait to see wait lies ahead.
This is what I HATE about Windows Vista most. It's a program that drives people like me to the point of insanity because NOTHING IS EVER SIMPLE when it should and could be. In the old days we would simply open 2 windows and be done with it; problems back then could be solved by intuitive commonsense. I Thank God everyday that the light switches in my home aren't made by the Windows Vista people.
"vista premuiun", I would like my item return back to me or i am write the state attroney office in the state of illinois
"Great OS, but not good uprade ", Windows Vista is great operating system because it is more stable than xp and has some great new features. My parents always had xp and it was good, but then I needed a new computer for school I had to get a certain laptop and it came with vista.
Pros: Great user interface, more stability, windows sidebar, it is more secure, and supports more programs. Also vista has a new search bar that makes finding a file easier and vista has pretty much everything great about xp in it.
Cons: If you had a single core cpu at 2ghz on xp you'll have to get a 2gb core 2 duo to get about the same performace. Some old programs don't work with vista (usally 95 and 98). Not a whole lot new features to make you want to upgrade your whole computer.
If you are getting a new computer with good specs choose vista, but if you're just upgrading then just stay with xp. Overall Vista is a great os.
P.S Don't listen to all the crap about how it is really buggy and stuff like that because it's not.
"To be looked at...that's how useless it is", Microsoft forces it down people's throats by trying to stop XP support & coercing comp manufacturers into exclusively offering Vista, but now they're trying to change their tone. Don't buy Mojave ads and don't buy Vista.
Vista is obsessed with looks. Unfortunately the resource-hog features like Aero (semi-transparent borders? really?) don't help productivity. And after the first 5 seconds of use, you really don't notice the fluff anymore.
What you do notice beyond the first 5 seconds is the sluggishness, even with the fluff turned off. Opening the control panel takes 15 seconds. Accessing a folder's list with a large number of files is agonizingly slow (and didn't Vista start as Longhorn, a faster file-accessing goal?)
Features were also ripped out and tripped over. The picture editor, which I enjoyed toying with, is now bare-bones, stripped of the cool little editing tools. The media center doesn't even have a progress bar to skip through (not to mention it plays DVDs with an awful horizontal misalignment / lag). And surprise...navigating it is slower!
Windows Defender, the spyware & unwanted program monitor is turned off by default, supposedly to avoid further antitrust problems for Microsoft (but isn't Vista's tech pitch that it's more secure?!). So you'll need to dig through and turn it on.
It seems as if Microsoft set a date to make money, failed at their initial goal of writing a new file management architecture, and pieced together a last-minute cosmetic skin to meet that deadline. Maybe it could be a fantastic OS. Maybe it already is, and just falls short of my last one. Maybe MS just completely screwed the pooch on their business strategy and customer goodwill. Til they provide free XP to existing Vista users to allow side-by-side comparison, I can't stomach the Mojave advertisements of "surprise...it's Vista!"

Read this reviews before You buy...
"The main advantage over Home Premium is...", File encryption. This version has file encryption. If that is something you need for your business, then this would be the edition you are looking for. This version, as it's name says, has everything. If you do not want the media center, or other items, I would say, look at other versions first.
"Not as Universal as XP", I have been a windows user since the original 95 and have upgraded my machines according every time the new operating systems come along. Some have been great and some have been downright horrible (Window's ME anyone?).
Vista lies somewhere in the middle. For those trying to convert from mac to PC it might be a good ideas, as it borrows heavily from the Macintosh OX model. But those of us used to generic windows will find that it takes a lot of time to get to know VISTA, and still things remain complicated.
But once you get used to VISTA there are a lot of perks, such as easier searching mechanisms, a new clock system, and the invent of widgets. But on the same token it takes a lot more RAM, and might not be the best choice for machines with less than 2gz of ram.
"Why I elected not to "upgrade" to Vista from XP", Oh the downside of Amazon Vine -- the need to select products quickly, before you really have a chance to find out whether they'll be good for you. So I can't really review this product, other than to set forth the reasons why, after I did a ton of research after I requested this, I decided to stick with XP.
1. Cnet.com did a detailed analysis of the differences between Vista and XP and found them dead even overall. Vista had some nifty little interfaces with the internet and some multimedia improvements, but didn't improve on speed or any of the applications I use most frequently (word processing, email and web browsing).
2. A web search revealed that numerous people have had problems with upgrading and I didn't want to uninstall XP and all related programs so I could do a fresh installation. Everything I have works with XP and is configured for it.
3. My computer is not new. Vista apparently works best with newer computers.
4. Comparisons to ME, the worst OS Microsoft ever released. Fool me once...
5. Too many reported problems, and even the people who like Vista reported that it wasn't much better than XP.
So, in short, lots of potential downside with insufficient upside to make up for the risk. If I get a new computer anytime soon, I will load Vista, but for now, I'll stick with XP.
Sorry that this wasn't more helpful!
"This OS Rocks your world!", I installed the 64-bit version. It's great because it recognizes all the 4GB I have (vs. those people that only got like 3.2GB or so in 32-bit). 64-bit lets you upgrade > 4GB TOTAL RAM (system RAM + graphics card + other devices). It's pretty cool because Vista SuperFetch uses all the extraneous RAM as disc-cache and it makes my system really fast. Like as I used my computer, it learns what programs and files I use so it just gets faster to load them because it pre-copies them to RAM and launches them from RAM instead of the HD. That's such an awesome technology unique to Vista!
It also defaults the turn-off to "S3 sleep" instead of shutting down so when I turn the computer on, it takes like 5 seconds to come on and I'm back to exactly where I was. I read it only uses like 2 Watts in that state so it's pretty practical. And it doesn't have to re-cache everything to my extra RAM...unlike rebooting the computer. I'm thinking about going 8GB to make it even better now since RAM is dirt cheap!
The instant search is pretty useful and fast since it indexes everything you want to be able to search in. I'm getting used to "googling" (so to speak) my apps and files instead of going through menu trees like usual. You can even choose what to index and not index so it reduces the extraneous information.
I only had a few problems with old apps. I easily found newer versions or substitutes. For some old games, I got them all to work by some internet searching. It's amazing that people found solutions to run games that shouldn't work. With either some adjustments, or replacement 64-bit files, etc they worked! Hey, I guess some people can't live without their favorite game to figure all this out! :)
The voice recognition feature is pretty cool. It takes an hour or so to go through the tutorial and maybe some more time to remember all the commands but it's actually pretty decent. Controlling the computer is a bit clumsy since you can do it faster with a mouse, but I guess if you have your hands tied... But when you get it recognize most of your voice it can be faster than typing a document or email and it's pretty accurate too.
The new task manager called "Reliability and Performance Monitor" rocks. It shows so much more stuff that the XP one.
Direct 3D 10 is pretty nice. It makes a lot of graphics effects possible and looks a whole lot better.
One disappointing is the Vista Ultimate Extras. They never really come out with anything new for a long time. And when they do it's pretty useless, unless you like to play those little games they have. But I guess it's a matter of preference. I suppose the main feature is the drive encryption if you have a laptop with secrets and stuff.
Overall, I'd have to say that this OS makes me never want to use XP ever again...much more than XP made me not want to use 2000. If you are building a new system with new certified components, get this OS in 64-bit! You might not think so now, but as RAM gets cheaper and cheaper...and new powerful apps come out (esp. 64-bit)...you will find yourself upgrading your RAM. I suspect that I will have 16 GB of RAM before moving to Windows 7! ;)
"Works great, looks good", Best things: Instance search - Can start typing in a program and it makes it easy to find what I'm looking for Media Center - Connects with my Xbox 360 for sharing media great Gadgets - Neat way to view traffic/weather/personal pictures Aero - User interface looks pretty slick and cool Solutions - When something breaks (video card has crashed several times for me), it will tell you which component broke and also will give potential solutions
Not so great things: Can actually run on older hardware (Have installed on 5+ year old laptop), but when done so it lacks the cool aero effects Needs 1Gb of RAM to function well User access control is a bit annoying (asks you when you want to install something). However, I found that after I got my system first set up I rarely see that prompt
Overall, I like it quite a bit. I wouldn't run XP if I had the hardware to do an upgrade, although I would say that I would just buy a new computer rather then perform an upgrade.
