"LIfe-changing read"
I read this book at a very critical point in my life. I was fed up with what we commonly call "Christianity". I was fed up of the formulas that were supposed to make my Christian life work, formulas that were making me miserable because they weren't working; I was fed up of all the guilt I felt from not being able to fully "obey the Bible" and live a fruitful Christian life; but most of all I was tired of all the pretene that came with Christianity in contemporay circles, not being able to be fully authentic about the true nature of my problems because we are always too busy trying to promote the "abundant life".

This book was a Godsend in this regard, it helped me to dispel all the popular misconceptions about what it means to be a child of God. Jim Palmer looks at Christianity through a rare prism of honesty and humor and makes even the worst of strugglers or sinners like myself feel a degree of comfort and security in Jesus. I especially loved the chapter on Hip-Hop and the one about the gentleman who struggled with his sexuality.

I highly recommend this book. It is on my short list of must reads for people who are curious about the Christian faith or have become dissilusioned by contemporary Christianity

"Awakening"
My life in the past year has been an awakening - a series of conversions or events that have brought me closer to God. Reading this book was one of those events, and for this I humbly thank-you, Jim Palmer.

You reintroduced me to the Christ that I rebuked when I could not disassociate doctrine or dogma from the Spirit. I threw it all out, and it nearly killed me. The past year has been both horrible and wonderful for me. Wonderful in that I am awakening from a great sleep and horrible because I'm realizing the most of my life I slept.

As a father of four, I hope and pray that my children can gather similar insights into the precious, loving kindness of God.

I sent both of your books to two of my closest friends. I love it when I find a great gift!

"I enjoyed it very much."
This is not a Bible study book, for anyone looking for that type of book. It is the refections of a guy who hit the wall and found meaning in surprising places. Think of this book as sitting on a park bench listening to a stranger tell you their life story when you simply ask, "How are you?" If you are like me, you will sit quietly, smile, laugh, and shed an occasional tear as you hear the accounts of the stranger. While I don't agree completely with all of Jim's conclusions, I'd like to believe I'm mature enough to glean from all the good within the book. God used the accounts of the waitress and checkout clerk to affect some needed change in my life.

Another Nobody who is only somebody because of Christ,

"Loved it"
I loved this book. It was not cliche or fluff -- it was real and thought provoking. It was not "preachy", but left you to draw your own insights.

"Great Follow-up After Reading "The Shack""
I read "The Shack" by William P. Young over Christmas vacation. I personally loved it, but I am not a huge fan of fiction. So when I was searching around on Amazon I came across "Divine Nobodies" as a similar type book, although not fiction. So I decided to pick it up. "Divine Nobodies" was the best follow-up to "The Shack" because it is non-fiction/true. I enjoyed each of the chapters and was very encouraged that a walk with God should be so freeing and real. "Divine Nobodies" helped me to see how it can all be carried out in our normal everyday lives. Pick it up you won't be disappointed.

" Finally....", What a refreshing read! Christianity involving other people in their lives as opposed to the stage of a church. We can read this and realize that God lives outside the Sunday morning gatherings also. As we learn from the New Testament, Jesus and his disciples did their teachings out on their feet in the towns, villages, and countrysides. Thank you Jim for sharing your experiences and stories, the story about the girls in Asia and the young man who was alone particularly brought the seeming lack of focus of our christianity or religion into focus. What does Church mean if we forget those who can't get there? Brilliant book!

"Humor best left to others", I have been reading this book for about five days. I usually burn through a book rather quickly so this one is a slower read for me as it is not a long book.

I believe the primary purpose of a book is to open our minds for learning- expansion. Some do it through being a truly enjoyable read- I do not find that to be the case with this one. Don't get me wrong, I like the concept of sharing the insights of one flawed human with another. Misery loves company and seeing that I am not alone in my ineptness provides some relief.

What I struggle with is Mr. Palmer's use of humor. For me, it is way to predictable and pulls from the overall work. As an example, Robert Fulghgum says, "Don't worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you." That is slightly ironic and humorous-it adds to his work. Mr. Palmer's are not up to the same level.

It probably sounds like I am panning this book- not the case. I am glad I am reading it. Dealing with life's everyday grind- more importantly sharing the experiences with others is invaluable. This book does that very well.

"Back To The Roots Of The 1st Century Christian Church", ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! This book is a "must read" for anyone searching for deeper meaning in their walk with God. It opens the christian's mind and eyes to a lifestyle and not a belief... something that the 21st century church needs desperately.

"DIVINE NOBODIES", A MUST IF U ARE GOING TO GROW AND HAVE A INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP
WITH GOD.

"This is what the walk of faith is really about.", After spending years in church disillusioned and discouraged and after leaving the church altogether, I've read many excellent books written by people who have walked the same road. This was one of those books and it was incredibly encouraging and inspiring. This is practical faith being walked out in small, meaningful ways by people who, like the author states, are "nobodies". I admire people who do naturally resemble Jesus and don't even realize it. That is the result of relationship with the Father-a life that resembles Jesus for no personal gain whatsoever.

"Ever wonder if there is more to faith than religion? ", I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Jim Palmer gives us examples of the Jesus he sees in others, giving skin and words to the message of Christ in ways most churches wouldn't dream of. This book is great for people of religious traditions that have a lot of theology and tradition and that seem to claim an exclusive monopoly on Jesus at the expense of other Christian denominations. It will help you branch out and understand that the God whom you are seeking to find is sooooo much bigger than any religious tradition. Many people I have met who come from very "conservative" Christian denominations often do not understand that there is a difference between religion and faith as all that they have been taught is that you need one to have the other. This book helps one shed the shackles of that archaic idea and allows one to breathe the fresh, new air of spiritual freedom, released from well-intentioned yet misguided religious traditions through the experiences Jim has had with various people along the way. It makes a lot of sense to me that we will learn much, much more about Jesus from the sorts of people that He hung out with than from Fathers or Pastors or Priests. Jim allows us to share in his experiences and grow in our knowledge of Christ.

"The writings in this book are of love.", The writings in this book are of love...just what Jesus and all SPIRITUAL leaders speak of. Jim has a way of seeing that love in all things that many people may just pass over as the ordinary. I'm a spiritual being and have never been interested in religions' versions of spirituality or the Bible, which to me, seems to be infiltrated with man's low energy input. After reading Divine Nobodies, and seeing how Jim captured the beauty, love and truth in everyday moments, I became excited about some scriptures in the Bible for the first time in my life. Thank you Jim Palmer for sharing your journey with us so honestly and completely.

"Reminds us that the world is bigger than our little ecclesiastical corner", It's the people we don't always notice who have taught Jim Palmer the most important lessons in his life. Not the preacher, not the theology professor, not even his church doctrine. In fact, Palmer has spent most of his adult life un learning what he was taught as a seminary student, evangelical preacher, and general I'm-in-church-when-the-doors-are-open kind of guy.

Perhaps because each chapter is devoted to someone you'd least expect, and there isn't any other appropriate place to say it, Palmer gives us two intros to his book. The first is a random list of facts about himself, one of which is that he has Tourette Syndrome.

He was a rising star in the evangelical sky until his marriage dissolved as a result of his wife's adultery. Suddenly there was no place for him in his religious world. "I surmised heaven had me marked too, no longer just a child of God, by now a divorced one." This was the beginning of Palmer's reflections on just what God really feels about people like himself. His pain is tangible: "I shamefully assumed my place in the land of misfit toys on the outskirts of God's kingdom."

It is from this starting block that God begins teaching him lessons from the overlooked people around him - the hip-hop friend who exposes the hypocrisy he's seen in Christian artists, the waffle house waitress who has tried attending church, but has concluded from her treatment there that the church doesn't want her. The friend who is a homosexual, and also a Christian. This acquaintance is alienated by the church and even by Palmer himself. He gets us thinking (without condoning immorality of any sort), even wondering to ourselves, can there be such a thing as a homosexual Christian?

The handicapped little girl in the library gets a whole chapter, because he suddenly realizes that God loves her even though she is "useless" to Him in most people's eyes. Can God love him, even if he can no longer be the celebrated evangelical preacher he once aspired to be? He grapples with what exactly it is about us that God loves, anyway..

The book asks questions. The answers aren't stated, but we get them. Should the church be deciding how we vote? What about the megachurch and the megapreachers? Should Christianity revolve around a church at all? Can a local business be "Christian" without displaying a fish? And what does that look like?

It's uncomfortable to read. It's a poignant and yes, uncomfortable message. Palmer's turbulent childhood and depression are not the stuff cheerful books are made of. He shows us things going on around the world we don't want to think about. But this is God's world, and we are somehow glad he's reminding us that the world is bigger than our little ecclesiastical corner.

Palmer comes to grips with his Catholic roots, and he learns to listen to God and pray in a true and meaningful way. But it's not a way he learns easily. And as important as it is to know what is right and what is wrong, it may end up being even more valuable to learn that "you can be technically right about God without really knowing Him."

"religionless Christianity", Well, this is the book for you. This is a very interesting book. The author is very self deprecating, funny, insightful, honest, vulnerable. Makes me want to meet the author, share a beer and a prayer with him. It's sad though, because its another reminder of how poorly we are doing as a church of reaching out to our neighbors, or helping people to really understand how to have a relationship with G-d without just a long list of rules. Read it and weep and laugh...

"Jim is Jim.", And God is God...and God (as we remember every Christmas) has a way of appearing in the strangest places and wrapped in the oddest bodies. If you can read this book and not think of some "divine nobodies" who have been placed in your path, you are not paying attention! I started making my own list!

I hope Jim chronicles what happens next...I want to know more about this new walk with God.
