"No fun at all"
I thought that this was just about the most repulsive movie I've ever seen - and not just because it was a musical! The blood and guts were a bit much, and all of the throat slitting and waterfalls of blood was putridly excessive, not to mention the awful, soulless "songs" that they sang! I thought it would be good fun watching Sacha Baron Cohen in a movie where he wasn't Borat or Ali G, but the "duel" that he "fought" with Sweeney Todd just didn't make any sense. Helena Bonham Carter, who is very attractive, is difficult to look at when she's made up in Marilyn Manson corpse make-up. I thought that Tim Burton would try to infuse at least some sort of dark humour into this story of a sort-of-sympathetic serial killer, but I'm not sure he even tried this time around since the film is really as gothic as it wants to be. Not recommended.

"Much too bloody. Depp perfectly cast."
Johnny Depp was perfect to play the part of Sweeney Todd, and Timothy Spall, who played the part of Beadle, was also perfect for his part in this very different type of musical. There was way too much spurting blood, which was not very realistic, and in my opinion, took away much enjoyment of the movie. The actors actually sang instead of lipsinking, which was a nice touch. Depp's voice surprisingly was quite good. The dynamic sound of the organ during the beginning titles and introduction was chilling.

The Blu-Ray transfer was very clear and detailed, and since the movie was purposely dark, the bits of color throughout stood out vividly. The audio was also good from the front and center channels, but was lacking a bit from the rear. There are a lot of good special features, but be warned, there is a lot of blood,so it's not for everyone.

"Righting wrongs"
I have never been so scared in my life - there are just too many people
out there who cannot overcome their desires to seek revenge. This revenge
is usually predigated upon an imagined or a real wrong for which the term
'forgiveness' does not even enter into the equation.

"Disgrace"
I don't even know where to begin when it comes to this film. This is probably one of the worst cast's I have ever seen for this show. Most of the people cast in this movie couldn't even hold a note and did not portray the character's well at all.

A huge disappointment. I've seen the show on Broadway and at many regional theatre's and this is the worst production I've ever seen of the show.

"MUSIC TO COMMIT SUICIDE BY "
The problem with the original stage version of this Sondheim musical was apparent at the time: it's a shallow story. Dressed up as it was in Brechtian stage business, adorned with two brilliant performances (Angela Lansbury and eventually George Hearn) and with the fine staging by Harold Prince, it at least seemed to be about something, even if later you realized it wasn't. It's a penny dreadful with aspirations to high art, but it's still a penny dreadful. Tragedy? Sorry. The central character doesn't have the stature for that: he's just a vengeful zero, and Mrs. Lovett a very bad cook.

The film jettisons everything that made the stage version so entertaining, starting with the humor. Please don't tell me it's dark and subtle -- it's gone. And without the high-octane vocal performances of Lansbury and Hearn (or any of their stage successors) the songs don't land right -- they're enervated. Only Ed Sanders as the boy Toby and to a lesser extent Jamie Campbell Bower seem capable to getting their numbers across, and in the case of Sanders doing so superbly. The character of Mrs. Lovett in particular is all wrong: Carter plays her as too smart, and the manic music hall energy that Lansbury brought to the role, and that the film needs so desperately, is lost. Irony? Look elsewhere. Tim Burton doesn't do irony.

What did Burton want the audience to take away from this picture? His grasp of human nature remains stubbornly infantile, and the film devolves into a nihilistic bloodbath. Poor guy, he can't get over the fact that bad things happen.

"Tim Burtons' BEST MOVIE EVER", This is an important occasion in my life for it is the first time I have ever taken to a musical (which I usually find really silly) to the point where I played the soundtrack while I applied my makeup in the morning, while I ate breakfast, while I drove to work and even while I cooked dinner at night...
I sing Helenas' part of the stirring 'My Friends' while I walk my dogs at the dog park-
"I'm your friend too, Mr. Todd.
If you only knew, Mr. Todd.
Ooh, Mr. Todd,
You're warm
In my hand...
You've come home...
Always had a fondness for you,
I did."
Oh, I sing this soundtrack constantly. My co-workers just love it when I break into `By the Sea', which I do at least twice a day, kissing my boss. I sing 'A Little Preist' while I use the snow blower at the top of my lungs outside and I don't care who hears me.
This music is addictive. Who cares if Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter aren't the most excellent vocalists on the planet, they are perfect to me. If I ever met Helena, I'd drop to my knees and cry. She's that good in this role. I can't imagine anyone better for Sweeney Todd and I'm glad Tim Burton picked them in his infinite wisdom. This movie helps me get through my boring life and I'm grateful for it!
This is like chocolate for the soul.

"Depp and Burton again", I love Johnny Depp. I love Tim Burton. I love Horror, and I love musical theatre. It is almost like this movie was made just for me. The sets are magical looking. The atmosphere created by Burton is creepy and awsome...I guess this flick fell short from me because the play is so simple and basic yet horrible and fun..and this just seemed...well made up. I you have never seen this performed live you may enjoy it more than I did.

"love this man", I think Johnny Depp can do no wrong and Eleanor Bonham Carter is Tremendous. I never miss a Depp movie and a MUSICAL!!! amazing. What can this man do next to impress me?

"Real downer", Depp can not sing, not even close. Not that the songs were worth listening to! Not a tune that would make it to the radio.
You would have to be demented to be in any way involved in bringing this sorry stage presentation to the big screen........why?

"The best Sweeney Todd yet!", Absolutely wonderful! I have since listened to the soundtracks of the stage recordings, and in my opinion, Helena Bonham Carter does a far better job than Angela Lansbury and Patti Lupone ever did. Nothing against them, but Ms. Lansbury's singing gets grating after a few seconds, and Patti Lupone, while excellent as Evita, is far too stiff for Mrs. Lovett. Helena Bonham Carter may not be a professional singer, but she sings it far better than the other two ladies, and is amusing, believable, and likeable (no small feat, considering her character). And Johnny Depp is simply superb. Yes, they're not professional singers, but the entire cast does an awesome job that comes across far more naturally and beautifully than the other recordings I've heard. If you doubt it, take a . . . listen to the samples on Amazon.com. Compare how the three measure up to each other.

"Sweeney Todd-The Demon Barber of Fleet Street", A great movie and great perfomance from Johnny Depp and Alan Rickman. Very bloody. I would not suggest this to children under 16.

"A bloody good musical", Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp), a barber embittered by the destruction of his family and his own unjust imprisonment, returns to London filled with bloodlust and anger, thirsting for revenge against the man responsible for his family's downfall (Alan Rickman). While waiting for his big chance, he slaughters scores of customers, who are then recycled into meat pies served by Todd's accomplice and would-be lover, Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter).

Once again, director Tim Burton has found a fitting subject for his unique sensibility. His London is a dark, creepy warren of twisting back alleys and dank sewers. He does not compromise the basic savagery of this story, presenting a musical that features more blood than most slasher films. The reprehensible nature most of the characters is not prettied up for the screen; each of them is taken to their logical extreme and meets a richly deserved fate. I haven't seen the show as presented on stage, so I can't comment on how it compares to this compressed version, but I found the film to be quite satisfying in its own right (with the exception of one "surprise" that I saw coming from a mile away). The actors, who are not noted for their singing ability, acquit themselves well with Stephen Sondheim's excellent score.

"The Musical For Horror-Movie Fans", If you wish Lon Chaney were still alive and acting, or that he could have tried to sing a little bit when he was, this is the film for you. The sets and costumes are opulent, the casting is spot-on and the effects are dazzling. Most of all, the film owes its brilliance to the dark genius of Tim Burton. This is the film he was born to make! Oh, and don't fear the ghoulish aspects you might have heard about - this film offers plenty of humor.

""I Will Have Vengeance, I Will Have Salvation..." "Nothing's Gonna Harm You, Not While I'm Around..." Bloody Well Done.", Tim Burton's rendition of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street" is bloody well done...and I mean it literally. While I'm not very familiar with this musical, I thought, "Just the cast makes me wanna see it." Long story short I finally saw it on DVD and pretended to be disgusted by the blood because my mom would've been horrified if I'd told her I liked it. I really loved the movie, especially the final scenes. I won't give it away. You'll be glued to your chair watching this well-executed tale of a man seeking revenge after years in prison on a false charge ("The Count Of Monte Cristo," anyone?). I admit, I was surprised that Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter (sorely underrated; see her magnificent performance in the classic "Mary Shelly's Frankenstein"), Timothy Spall & Sacha Baron Cohen (aka "Borat") could sing. This wonderful movie shouldn't have been rated R. Should've also gotten nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Score and Best Cinematography. Rated PG-13 for some violence.

"Arrived Quickly as described", This movie arrived within 4 days of order placement and it was brand new in original packaging as described. Great deal for a spectacular movie.
