"fairly comprehensive backup & copy utility"
If what you're looking for is a complete backup utility, that's reasonably easy to use, this one might suit your purpose.

Installation, update, and activation are easy, similar to other Symantec programs. (This one also uses Live Update.) I do have an objection to the fact that Symantec never does a full uninstall -- they leave around stuff in the registry, as well as LiveUpdate, and it requires extra work (and some technical skill) to remove everything. I take off one star for that.

The setup is quite simple, especially if you follow their procedures. A full system backup is recommended, and the program will nag you about your system being "at risk" if you don't set up the full backup. You can in addition set up backup jobs for selectively backing up some of your files and folders. So for instance you might want to do nightly backup of your key folders, and weekly or monthly backup of the full system.

I would recommend that you use a network disk (NAS) for your backup -- there are many not-too-expensive products available, and I've been quite happy with the Buffalo products.

You can also use this program to do remote management of other computers on your network, but be aware that each computer needs its own license for the program.

One thing I don't like is that the backup files are not copies, they are in a compressed format. For daily backups I prefer to be able to make normal copies of files, so that I can go quickly to the backup folder and find a backup copy I might want. This optimizes my time and convenience over computer time and disk space, and this is how it should be. Or at least, this should at least be an option.

I take off another star for the nagging about full system backup, and the unavailability of a simple file backup or file sync (backup by copying selected files/folders directly from one disk to another).

But overall a solid program that does what it says, and does it competently. Just make sure what you want is what it wants to do. :-)

"Norton Ghost 14.0"
I purchased this product and am very disappointed with Symantec's customer service. I emailed them with a complaint that I was not able to load the product on more than one computer although it was purchased for home use. I stated that I would have requested a refund except I already purchased, installed it and ran it and needed to use it in the future. Without further discussion the refund was processed and I was emailed to be notified of the refund. I responded stating that I did NOT request a refund and that I did not want one and I needed the product and to please reverse the refund. I received another email stating the refund had been process and they IGNORED my request to reverse the refund. Then I attempted to find a phone number to contact them which is not given anywhere.
I consider the Customer Support to be the worst I have ever dealt with.

"Life Saver. Never reinstall windows again :)"
If I have computer problems now, I just Restore. I use to have to reformat the drive and reinstall windows, and then have to buy a new copy of Windows because of their limited installs. This pays for itself and keeps the Microsoft Dynasty out of my pocketbook. LOL

"Bad news on this one"
This software made a backup to my USB drive but then it would not restore because I had no restore disk. Symantec you should warn customers that backup does no good unless you have a restore disk. A dialog box that says your backup is useless would be nice. Instead I had a "green light" saying my drive was safely backed up. This product is hard to operate and is not portable. You can't boot in 16 bit subsystem with generic drivers. The software is a complete .NET rewrite and bears no resemblance to earlier forms of Ghost like version 8. Try to find an old copy of version 8 or buy something else. $75 dollars out-of-pocket and you can use it on one machine if you're lucky.

"Extermely Difficult to use"
Unless you are very computer knowledegable and experienced, I would not recommend this product for you. The level of difficulty in using is very high and I am a certified computer technican with years of experience. Poor User manual. Also after installing on Vista I was immediately confronted with a Ghost Status window showing I needed to create a Recovery Point and no suggested default location for this. When attempted to create on DVD disk it would reach 17% and never finish. Took help on two different days using Norton live online chat to fix.

What our customer's say!

"install bugs", Great product, does what it is supposed to do, once it is installed, but the installation!!! Once I found the link that allowed their tech to figure out what was wrong, and that took me some doing, after I had tried to install it a couple of times, including using the Norton Utility that is supposed to clean out old Norton installations, it took the tech about an hour to figure out what the problems were and fix them.

He was excellent, superb, obvioiusly in South Asia, and you have to be willing to allow them to take over your computer, but why was it so difficult (I run Windows XP on AMD Athlon) to install, and so hard to find the on line tech support link?

"Does not work as boot disc", I use Norton Ghost 11 to backup/restore XP partitions, it's fast and works great.

Boot from CD, choose partition to backup/restore, choose destination partition/file, and you are done. It even compresses the data when doing backup to image file.

I tried to boot from the Norton Ghost 14 CD and it gave an I/O error and stopped.

I'm going back to v11, I've never had any problems with it.

"Norton Ghost 14... downhill battle", I had previously used Norton Ghost product in older versions (around Ghost 5 or so). Recently my parent's computer had a hard drive crash. After successfully diagnosing the problem and correcting it, I decided not to trust it in the future... and that I would ghost the old drive to a new, larger drive.

I had a limited amount of time, and wanted to get the now running PC returned, so I went over to the Norton site and paid full price for a download version of the software.

Ghost 14 is very different than the older versions. First, it installs several services on your system. Second it comes with an iso image for a "recovery cd." The "recovery cd" has no ability to copy a drive. The only way to do it is through the windows drive copy function. Well, I tried this several times and the imaged drive would not boot into windows, and it froze before reaching the welcome screen. After several attempts at re-imaging I gave up and made a few phone calls. One of my friends came over with a CD boot disc made from Acronis which worked flawlessly on the first try.

It seems I've wasted $80 on some useless software. This might be okay if you are looking for a program to automatically backup files to a second or external drive... but there's freeware programs that do that just fine without the need for all the services. PASS on Ghost 14.

"Norton Ghost", This product is not for the novice. The start-up book that accompanies the CD does not provide sufficient instructions to the novice. I had to have a friend help with the gosting of my small hard drive to my large hard drive. He used a five year old copy of Ghost to accomplish this effort.

"Norton, The Ghost with the most!", Once I got used to the new interface, the product did exactly what I needed. It even restores domain settings at work correctly so I don't have to go to IT every time I restore a setup on my system and have them reestblish my company network credentials.

"Norton Ghost", Since I have been using Norton products for years, it was a natural for me to select Ghost as my personal backup facility. It is easy to use and wonderfully powerful and complete. I cannot think of another product that I have used in the past that has the ease of use and the features available for the right price.

"NGH 14 Provides Very Effective Backup for Vista x64", I've been using Norton Ghost for may years and it keeps getting better. Running Windows Vista x64 has been challenging. Version 12 had the annoying habit of disabling my backups and occasionally causing my non-boot drive to be set to read only. Version 14 has solved those problems and runs smoothly and reliably with minimal impact on my work. The recovery point browser is very effective for recovering a specific version of a file. The ability to convert a disk image to a virtual machine image was particularly useful when I upgraded to Vista as it allowed me to continue running my old system concurrently on the same PC.

"Who Needs It?", I wonder who really needs this product. It is way too complicated to install. Restoration is not flawless by any means, i.e. you cannot count on it working when you really need it working. So, for backup of user files I will just use a simple script with xcopy, and for system restoration go through the complete reinstall: it will guarantee that everything is fine the way it should be.

"Great for Backing Up Files",
Norton Ghost is in essence backup software for those who did not get an operating system that already has backup software on it. That being said, even though I'm running Vista Ultimate, I decided to give Ghost a try to see what it offered.

I actually like Ghost a great deal. I found the interface to be easy to set up, and the alerts that it is doing its duty each night is very reassuring. I haven't had any problems with getting the files back again.

Now I do have to say that I would NOT ever try to restore an entire operating system from old backup files. My home PC is running a number of large, complex software packages. If I had some sort of catastrophic hard drive failure, I would start from scratch, install those software packages fresh, and just get my data files from the backup. I imagine some small home users might enjoy the idea of restoring an entire system but for me it's just not reasonable. I have hardware level protection, but if the system really does hose, I'm starting from scratch to ensure everything goes on fresh and clean.

So if your aim is to have your entire computer including OS and programs backed up, I'd look more into hardware level (RAID etc) protection to give you the security you're seeking. I realize Ghost says it can do it - but there are so many variables and issues involved that it can't be fool-proof. I would really only use this (and any back up software) to back up data files that are changing. Organize your data files so that they are stored logically, then back them up nightly. You can always re-install Word - but you can't re-install your diary files and important correspondence.

Now, that being said, why go with Ghost rather than say Vista Ultimate? I happen to love Vista Ultimate and haven't had any issues with it at all. I love its functionality, and it's run super smoothly with all my software. But if you're someone who wants to run an OS without a built in back up, I would definitely go with this to supplement. You want backups. Somehow computers know when you are NOT backing up, and that is when they choose to crash. Don't subject yourself to that pain. Whatever you go with, make sure you are backing up your data files.

"The best backup product on the market", This product is without peer, it is used by virtually every IT person I know. It is easy to use and does a good job.
