"Travel Book too well read"
I guess it comes with the territory of a travel guide that is this popular. I bought a few books to plan a 2 week vacation in Italy. This travel guide had great ideas, but I was unable to book a single hotel in Rick Steve's book. I travelled in October and tried to make reservations in the previous April-May. My husband and I both felt it would have been wiser and probably cheaper to travel with a tour company that allows a lot of individual choices, instead making all our reservations and plans ourselves.

"A waste of paper"
After reading this guide I was no better directed than general online research. I expected ratings, recommendations and highlights. The useless descriptions of restaurants and lodging are general with a price indicator - nothing to help you make a match to your desire. Missed too much more than I can list here. Bologna, a major city was not even in the index. My first and last Rick Steves guidebook.

"A great resource for Italy"
I highly recommend this book or any Rick Steves books or videos for that matter. We took this book to Italy and the phrase "Rick says..." became so common that we were joking that he was the third person on the trip! What a great job that guy has!

"Worthless worthless worthless"
Did I mention this map is worthless? If you want to show your kids the general shape of Italy, with a few of the large cities penned in then this is the map for you! If you want to see some actual roads, and cities somewhat smaller than Milan, you are out of luck. I was stunned when I opened up this map... very very little detail.

"2007 Not Updated & Hotels Loaded with American Tourists"
I have been a fan of Rick Steves for many years. However, we were very disappointed in his Italy 2007. First of all, there were many attractions that had been closed that he claimed were open. It's was real shame to hike across a city to find an attraction totally closed and still under construction for YEARS! Also, we were bothered the "Rick Steves-ism" across Italy. I remember the day when the his recommened small, family-run hotels had locals to converse with. Now, his hotels are totally filled with American tourists all holding Rick Steve guidebooks! As such, it makes your "European Experience" less special. In Rome, we switched to Frommers and had a lot better time. Hope this helps.

"Rick Steves guides are a must for us", We value the Rick Steves guide books as an important part of our travels. We use them in planning the trip and also as a guide to sites, attractions, dining and hotels once we arrive at our destination. The city walks and guide to pertinent museums are also helpful. We like the fact that the books are updated yearly, at least in part. The other travel books out there don't do this for the most part.

"MAP REVIEW: Not too bad as a reference", I put "MAP REVIEW" in my title, as it seems that most of the reviews here are for the book? How does that make sense?

This map was good for us as it covered our itinerary - Venice, Florence, Siena, and Rome. The landmarks were helpful, as well as the designations for pedestrian areas and shopping areas. The map is fairly heavy paper, so it will last even if it's not laminated.

My main complaint is the map didn't have enough street level information. So if you're navigating by yourself, you may need another map if you're looking for a particular street location. Also, the maps are marked with the English version of the names of landmarks; for me, I find this confusing when walking around a city.

"not too scray", 1/2 of the cities i visited were not on his book. took it to italy with me, left it in the bag most of the time.

"A Must for Travel in Italy", Rick Steves is nerdy but he does his homework. Don't think about planning a trip to Italy without this book. Read the book before going to Italy and keep it in your carry-on when traveling. I'd like even more help with places to stay and to eat but the book still proved to be indispensable.

"Good book for sites/eating suggestions", My wife and went to Italy in Sept. 2007, it was amazing to see how many people had the same book. We really liked the book for the suggestions for sites (rating system he uses for must sees) and suggestions for eating estabishments. I thought the suggestions for lodging were a little bit more then our budget could afford...there are great travel sites on the web that can offer lodging at reasonable prices, we did go to some of the dining places and they were great.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Rick Steves map of Rome, Florence, and Siena", I've been to the cities before but needed a new map for a up coming trip. The paper maps disintigrate and these maps are waterproof.
This is the most helpful map I've seen. The location of historic sights are all clearly marked. It even has the US Embassy in case there is a problem. Shopping is highlighted, and public transportation is easy to find. A great map! I just ordered the Paris map for the first leg of the trip.

"Never alone", The Rick Steves' series of guidebooks are unique in that they not only tell you what you can see, but also offer advice as to what is worth your time. And most importantly the books tell you how to go about doing it, cheaply and efficiently. I traveled alone through Italy for four weeks using only this book, and never felt alone. These books are the only ones you need to have an outstanding vacation.

There are of course some small mistakes and misrepresentations in the book, but no more than any other book. I recommend also getting the corresponding Mona Winks Rick Steves' Mona Winks: Self-Guided Tours of Europe's Top Museums (5th Edition) book as a good complement.

"Excellent Book.", The Book is excellent. Its a fantastic tool for planning your trip to Italy. Thew book equips you with crucial information which helps in saving time as well as money on the trip.

"Disappointing", Before traveling to Italy, I reviewed this book and felt it would be extremely useful. In reality, there are huge gaps of information that a first time traveler would find helpful. The maps are sadly lacking in detail, to the point of being useless in some instances, the vocabulary list should be doubled, and contrary to Rick's recommendation, Pisa is well worth a visit!

"Always informative", As usual, Rick Steeves makes exploring new countries pleasurable and easy. He suggests the important things to see, and some of the lccal treasures you might not think of, depending on your length of stay. I have stayed at his recommended hotels and never been disapointed.
