"3 laCie hard drives wnt down after 1 year of use" I work with a lot of images, and about a two years ago purchased three laCie hard drives, 500 gb, 1 tb and 1.5 tb. All three are dead now, and they all died same way - after a long non use period of time (from a week to a couple of months) you turn them on and nothing happens, they are dead, the disk is not spinning and no means can help. If you are looking for something reliable, please find something else.
"Great, quiet drive - perfect for Mac Time Machine" I bought this review after my Western Digital MyBook hard drive bit the dust and I was dissatisfied with their customer service. (I wonder if part of the problem was that the WD drive is always on. This drive, by contrast has an on/auto/off switch. I prefer to leave the drive off unless I want to do a backup since I'm not a constant user of my computer.) Anyway, this drive is whisper quiet - a top priority for me - since the design doesn't require a fan. It's quick, unobtrusive, and perfect for backing up my iMac with Apple's Time Machine automatic backup program.
When you first plug in and power up the drive, it creates a program on your screen that gives you options of formatting for Mac or Windows, and it has some other software as well. It includes Retrospect Express backup and a one-touch feature to use with Retrospect Express, but since I prefer using Time Machine I just dragged out these folders from the drive and saved them on my computer's drive in case I might want to use them someday.
The triple interface option is good for me - I prefer backing up over FireWire and leaving my USB ports for other purposes.
Anyway, I've used the drive for several days now and am 100% satisfied. I used to own a LaCie hard drive years ago and I remember that that was a quality unit as well.
"No problems yet, QUIET and NOT hot" No problems yet, very functional with my new MacBook Pro. One problem is that it doesnt go to sleep when mac is sleeping or even shutdown when used with either firewire...this isnt an issue with the drive as much as the Firewire ports on the mac giving power to those ports at all times. pple of course...was not helpful.
"Great price ... at the time" Easy install, works great. Fast service, good communication. Could have got 1 TB for same price at Staples if I had waited for Black Friday.
"Sturdy and great!" The things I like about it are: industrial design, heavy (= sturdy to me), versatile - it can lie down or stand upright, depending on the space you have to give it. It is mostly quiet, although does ramp up at times. It stays cool. It only cost me $10 more than my Seagate, it was well worth the upgrade.
The Story: I don't have a ton of experience with external hard drives or computers for that matter, but here is my review based on my limited experience: I purchased a Seagate HD and had lots of files important to me stored on it. In a freak accident it fell over (not hard, not far) and stopped working. I called Seagate and they said the clicking noise I was hearing was erasing my info and that I could have them try to restore the info for a cost minimum of $300. Luckily, the files were replaceable, so when needing a new hard drive I looked and searched and read and chose the LaCie because it can either lie flat or it can stand up. It's heavy and industrial feeling. I feel much more secure with this HD.
Overall, I am 100% satisfied with this hard drive. It also automatically configured to my mac. I probably won't even consider a Seagate again.

What our customer's say!
"Not your typical external harddrive", I'm used to cheap external drives that cut corners to save money, but this harddrive is sturdy, quiet, and fast. It seems to be the fastest 1 TB drive that doesn't require a fan (because of its design). I use it for my MacBook Pro OS X Time Machine, and it works great. Very fast backups through the Firewire 800 cable, which is included.
"Quieter", I still have an old d2 Quadra that is working fine at 150g. This 500g drive was inexpensive and it is impressively quiet compared to the older model. Feels good, looks good, and is doing a good job.
"LaCie or not to LaCie?", I purchased the D2 Quatra, and it seems to work pretty good, it linked up to my pc (xp) with no problems at all.... the "One Button" software they provide does not work at all and customer support on helping me get the One Button software to work is horrible... I keep getting errors when I install "One Button" that no one seems to know how to fix. But the LaCie "BACKUP" software works great, that is the main reason I purchased a LaCie.... I am buying another LaCie because it is a good and reliable extra storage unit for the price... In this day and age you need a back up of your back up... The nice thing about this unit is that it is very quiet and lays flat and the only way I know it is working is because it has a very slight warmth to the touch... Like others, I have spent hours researching external hard drives and I also use two external Western Digitals(3 year old units)... I like WD but I wanted something that had a good review for backing up data, with "specific software" that was made to work with the Hard Drive unit... I currently back up my whole computer plus the external WD's data on to my LaCie.. I think it is a wise gamble on this LaCie drive, because nothing is a sure thing when it comes to hard drives!
"d2 Quadra 750 GB", The LaCie 301826U d2 Quadra 750 GB external hard disk is a beautiful piece of machinery. The aluminum cooling case means silent operation and gives it it's attractive appearance.
The installation for the hard drive is self explanatory; you plug it in, turn it on and click on the device in "My Computer" and it formats and installs itself. (for Windows users)
The device has 3 power options; On, Off and Auto. The auto is beautiful, because the device goes into standby when your computer does, saving energy. When finished using the hard drive, I select "Safely Remove Device" and then just unplug the drive from the computer, the drive shuts itself off.
I have not used the supplied software; auto updating and quick access button.
So far, the drive operates fast and effectively, using the USB connection. (I can only imagine how much faster it would be with a firewire connection) I've just received the device and am in the initial stages of use, and all is well. I will return to update the status after some time.
Enjoy!
"Very nice backup storage", I have had this LaCie for about a month now and it is working very well as a storage and backup device for my Mac. I am an average user. I have about 80-90 GB to back up and it does this quickly and efficiently. I got it because it has a fire wire 800 connection. I had another USB 2.0 Drive an it kept hanging up and would not back up that much very quickly. So far so good.

"lots to think abuot", Had my LaCie for three weeks now- no problems. I shopped on line and bought this sight un seen. I realize with the turndown that you can buy this size drive for less, or more to the point, one twice the size for pennies on the dollar. But I have peaked at a lot of the low end (price wise) stuff out there. Wow is mine sweet. Who ever this Neil Poulton guy is- I give him my $20. Those eBooks look like total explative. Maybe they are the same under the hood- but looks count man. Have some pride you geeks. I always want a cheap alternative - but this is cheap enough. I digress. Software- don't think you are going to plug this or any hard drive and just back up. Like all the geeks are out there telling you. This is complex. Stratagies and software options. New technologies and changing(aging) formats. The LaCie comes with at least 3 options - I chose Retrospect- for Mac. Its powerful to be sure. But not for the over 60 , just getting into email crowd, (hey I'm only 59) Do you do Snapshots or Archiving- Duplicating and should you daisy chain more drives. How do you practice a Restore? Just a word to the wise. Any one who says its simple- here's how I do it- OK if its simple would you mind just showing me this once? But I was wondering something about the drive and put out a support question, it was handled well- appropriately. Albeit in typical "e" format. Not that I want someone to call me on my home phone mind you. Hey I'm just thankful its not in Chinese with the funny pictures they use. Observations? Terrabit is the next megabit. I like the idea of 500 because these things will bite the dust in maybe 4years- so split things up on successfully newer equipment over time. but if you shoot SLR - D in raw or shoot video- better start with terra, for all your big cars you Americans really miss the point of memory and bandwith. Multiplication tells alot. So the tough call is 500 or terra really- the outer case- well that's no contest. Its not all that quiet bytheway. Its equivalent to my G5 iMac (PPC)-you might want it off the desktop in a drawer or something. They say its better to keep it running- but if you only access it occasionally? - your call. I store my photos- (all of them, to free up my limited (75) gig hard drive) in iPhoto libraries so I need it more than occasionally. And if you separate your music and video libraries- you get the picture. I give it another half point but not 5 because it is metal gray - should be white- sorry Neil.
"Buena compra", Este producto hasta ahora me a causado muy buena impresion, excelente contar con tantas posibilidades de conexion, su diseƱo compacto y resistente causan una sensacion de seguridad y la marca LaCie siempre a sido un respaldo de calidad. Creo que es una buena compra y una buena calidad precio
"Easy setup, fast and reliable, but it is really a 465GB drive", I am using it with Mac OSX, setup is basically plug and play and it works flawlessly with Time Machine. Firewire 800, 400 and USB2.0 gives you lot of flexibility. Very quiet operation.
Only reason for not giving it 5 stars is because of misleading advertising. After you format it for Mac you get only 465GB. (Manuals and preloaded utilities consume 0.5GB)
"Be Sure to Backup! Drive Stopped Working after Only 3 Months.", A very sleek and sexy piece of hardware with it's ribbed case and big blue eye. Heavey and solid. Has all the interfaces you could possibly want. Tons of storage, speedy, and built like an M1 Tank. However beware! My unit stopped working (crashed) after only 3 months of usage. If you put mission critical data on this drive, BE SURE TO BACKUP YOUR DATA! The drive crashed after only 3 months of regular usage. I lost all the data on this unit, but luckily I had made a backup of this drive just before the crash. Yes, I am very lucky. LaCie support is acceptable, and fortunately, they will replace the drive. If you purchase this unit, please remember to make a backup of everything you store on this drive. Backup your backup!
"Good external hard drive at a great value", They've changed the design of the power supply, which, hopefully, will correct the problem that the earlier model had. If you're using this with multiple external hard drives, be warned that the speed of the connection between them is limited to the speed of the connection to your computer. For example, if your daisy chain or RAID configuration connects to your computer via Firewire 800, then all of the connections between your external drives will be limited to Firewire 800 or slower, even though all of your external hard drives may be eSata compatible. Also, it's very difficult to create a RAID configuration without reformatting the drive which is to be mirrored.
