"Sugar Camp Quilt" Enjoyed this audio book thoroughly. I now understand clearly what the underground railroad was during the Civil War and how significant the quilts were.
"The Sugar Camp Quilt brought rescue to slaves" Told mostly in the first person, Dorothea Granger lives with her parents and under the house of her very strict Uncle Jacob who controls their every move. He orders Dorothea and her mother Lorena around terribly to the nth degree, and if they do everything he says, the brother Johnathan will inherit the large farm he leaves behind.
Uncle Jacob orders Dorothea to make a strange quilt, with maps in each block and trails, and he wants it just so. She can't imagine why until she realizes that this quilt is to be placed by the sugar maple tree for runaway slaves. It is a sign for the slaves that the Granger home is a save haven not to get captured.
Dorothea is a teacher at the schoolhouse as well until Mr. Nelson comes to the area and takes over as teacher. He is an ex-con having served many years in prison, and Dorothea cannot imagine why people would want him around. As Dorothea reluctantly gets to know Nelson, she finds out that the crime he was punished as a felon for was trying to help slaves hide safely. But she doesn't know this until almost the ending. The two fall in love by the end of the book.
"Very good read" Jennifer Chiaverini's novels are all good reads. She is a wonderful story teller. You don't have to be a quiltermaker to enjoy her novels and don't worry about them being "korney" because they aren't. If you enjoyed the movie "How to Make an American Quilt", then you will enjoy these novels.
"Courage in a Time of Unrest" Rural America in Civil War times is the setting for this realistic family story. The book is well written, the characteristric dress, chores, speech and customs of those times are accuractly protrayed, adding some amusement to an otherwise serious piece. The risk to those involved in helping slaves seeking freedom comes to life. Families and neighbors are under suspician to the point even those supporting the cause, feel they must hide and lie to each other, for self survival as well as furthering the cause of freedom. A good understanding of morality, integrety, and loyality at the grass roots level. A lesson not to be forgotten.
"Sweet Read" This is an another wonderful book in the Elm Creek Series. I loved it. This book is more historical in nature, giving background for the Runaway Quilt.

What our customer's say!
"Audio CD version of Sugar Camp Quilt", This is a review of the unabridged audio CD version of this book. The narration is good but not extraordinary. The main problem with an audio version of this book is that there are a large number of regular characters of both sexes, a wide range of ages, and in several cases, of a different race. Unless the narrator is exceptionally skilled at creating different voices, some of the character's voices end up sounding a little off. And women have a hard time making male voices that don't sound hoarse or gruff (though gruff worked for Uncle Jacob's voice). This book could have used at least two different narrators, one for the male characters and one for the female. Notwithstanding, the narrator has a pleasant reading voice and did her best to accommodate the large cast of characters.
I thought the story was quite interesting. This is the first of the Elm Creek books I've read so I had no idea what to expect. The story is set in the years before the Civil War when opinions and emotions about slavery were sharply divided and the Underground Railroad helped runaway slaves escape.
Dorothea and her parents are living with her Uncle Jacob because their farm was destroyed in a flood. Uncle Jacob is a hard taskmaster with no apparent need for family love. The arrival of a new schoolteacher costs Dorothea her job teaching and she instantly dislikes Thomas, her replacement. Uncle Jacob asks Dorothea to make a quilt for him of very specific design. When she completes it, she is angered by his poor treatment of it. At the same time, she is working on an "album quilt" to raise funds for a new library.
After Uncle Jacob suddenly dies, Dorothea learns he had a surprising secret and her family becomes involved with the Underground Railroad. There were no big surprises in the plot and the reader can guess what will happen between Dorothea and Thomas almost from the beginning. But the story was captivating and I never lost interest in it.
"A Quilt With A Purpose", The Sugar Camp Quilt
I enjoyed this tale of the Sugar Camp Quilt. None of the Elm Creek Quilt books have ever disappointed me.
The Sugar Camp Quilt is a story of the early settlers in the Elm Creek Valley. Dorothea has lost her job, as a school teacher, to a man who has been in prison. She has to endure her uncle's mean spirit, and the women in town who try to ban authors from an author quilt, for the library. She has to put up with those who are prejudice, when it is well known, in the town that her family are pro abolitionist.
Dorothea Granger was satisfyingly outspoken, in a day when women didn't have equal rights. She dared to stand up to a man who had broken her heart. Dorthea stood up to her awful, selfish Uncle Jacob, who worked her family so hard; they couldn't hardly breathe without his scorn.
Dorthea's parents tried to hush her and keep her in line, but when she worked hard to make a quilt for her uncle, using her best fabric choices and her best stitching, he only said, "that will do."
She wasn't so upset, until she saw him wiping his boots on her handiwork.
Upon the death of her uncle, she discovered that her quilt was being used as a map to guide run-away slaves. She also discovered that her uncle was using his grumpy, unhappy façade, to guard a secret, even from his family.

I had never read any of the Elm Creek Quilt series books and because of this enjoyable book we will definitely look for others in the series. The characters are well defined, the story line well done, and overall very enjoyable.

"Entertaining", This is an entertaining history of the Elm Creek area and it's participation in the Underground Railroad before the Civil War.
"A wonderful addition to the Elm Creek series", In my opinion I thought Ms. Chiaverini created a wonderful story. I've enjoyed all of the Elm Creek Quilters novels and I believe that "Sugar Camp Quilt" is the best of the series. Her writing talents excelled in this book and I can't wait till she releases another book. I won't hesitate to recommend this book to all my friends. Bye.
"The Sugar Camp Quilt", All of the books by this author, Jennifer Chiaverini, are excellent. Just wish there were more of them.
"Very informative", All the Elm Creek Quilts novels are excellent. Sugar Camp Quilt is historical and gives a great picture of the slave times and the good people who helped them.
"Quilts and the Underground Railroad", This is the seventh entry in the Elm Creek Quilt series and although the familiar characters from the other Elm Creek Quilt are missing, Chiaverini does return to Creek's Crossing, Pennsylvania, but the time frame is just prior to the Civil War. The premise is a very interesting one, and there is presently on going research to authenticate the use of quilts for use as markers along the Underground Railroad. Nineteen-year-old Dorothea Granger, is the niece of cantankerous uncle Jacob. Uncle and niece do not get along, although she respects his hard work and quiet devotion to his bible, so she is quite surprised when he requests that she make him a quilt to his exact specifications. Dorothea, along with her parents, has her farm duites to take care of, and she also teaches at the local school. Her dreams of education and career have been unfullfilled due to her parents financial failure and that's why they have come to live with Uncle Jacob. Her younger brother, Jonathan, is studying medicine in Boston and is seen as the likely heir to the farm, so Dorothea's parents must make the best of it. Dorothea knowing this, agrees to make the quilt for her uncle, even though it takes her away from her Library fund raising committee responsiblity. The committee is to raffle a fine quilt in order to raise funds to build the town a new library. The Granger family are staunch in their belief that slavery is wrong, and soon, through unforseen circumstances, they become embroiled in helping slaves through the Underground Railroad. I gave this book four stars only because the ending seemed a bit rushed to me, but the story itself is wonderful. If you like quilting, adventure, historical fiction, or just to read a good story, then pick up this book and enjoy!
