What our customer's say!

"A good program, reasonably priced but I came across defects.", I do my taxes by going through my income and deduction items and putting them into my tax return, i.e. I am using the "forms method". I have no comment about the relative merits of the "interview method" of TurboTax and TaxAct. My income consists of Social Security, pensions, dividends, interest, a real estate partnership in two states other than NY where I live, commodity trades and tax refunds. For 2006 I used both TurboTax and TaxAct to check that TaxAct, which costs less than half of what TurboTax costs, is just as good for my purposes.

I noticed one difference between the tax computations. TurboTax just deducted from my NY tax what I paid to MA and RI, where I am nonresident. TaxAct allowed me to deduct somewhat smaller amounts it computed using a complicated formula and I believe that is the way one is supposed to deduct taxes paid to other states in NY.

I found the much cheaper TaxAct more convenient to use, because it is somewhat easier to find and open forms in TaxAct than in TurboTax. However, I came across two time-wasting defects of TaxACT, which persist in the 2007 edition:

In Schedule K-1 for limited real estate partnerships, it is impossible to put anything in line 19A, where cash distributions are reported. E-mail support explained that the way the distribution is treated depends on other items. In effect the advice was that I should read the IRS material and figure out how to report the cash distribution.

A lesser but still annoying defect is that even on a screen with room to spare, certain words of the forms don't appear. For instance, NY IT-201 line 72 is: "Total New York State Tax withheld..." and line 73 is "Total NY City tax withheld..."
On the TaxAct screen line 72 is "Total NY Tax withheld" and line 73 is "Total NY State Tax withheld" but NY and State are not in consecutive spaces; it is as if a typewriter had been backspaced and State had been typed on top of NY. I should say, if you print out the page the form looks correct, and in any case the two items are imported by the program from another form, but even so, this is a disturbing defect. I have a 256 MB NVIDIA video card; possibly the forms look OK on other computers.

Neither TurboTax MA nor TaxAct MA has schedule 3K-1 which I needed for the real estate partnership, and I filled in the MA tax forms by hand.

Both TaxAct and TurboTax can convert your tax return, either with or without all the worksheets and 1099 forms, into a .pdf document. The document can be very long, and TurboTax produces a table of contents which makes it easy to find what one wants. In the pdf produced by TaxACT I had to use Acrobat Reader's Find instruction to get reasonably quickly to the form I wanted.

Even for 2007, TaxACT does not have all the state tax programs you might need. Their state program many not help if you are a nonresident or part-time resident. The TaxACT web site states under what circumstances you can use the programs.

"Terrific Tax Software", After using TaxAct Ultimate for my 2007 federal and state taxes, I highly recommend it. I am just a normal taxpayer with no interest in TaxAct beyond appreciating a good product and good value.

For several prior years, I had used the on-line version of TurboTax Deluxe. But last year, I ran into several issues. As a result, I ended up doing my taxes twice--once on TurboTax and once by hand as a check on TurboTax. I was not a happy camper considering its premium price.

My experience is that TaxAct is the superior product even before considering costs. It is more intuitive and easier to move around in. You can enter data directly on the federal and state forms or use the TaxAct interview process to let the software make the entries. Direct entry is faster for familiar topics. And, you can switch back and forth between these two input methods.

Like TurboTax, after you finish the current year's taxes you can enter additional data to estimate next year's. But, in both products this is very rudimentary. The downloaded version of TaxAct Ultimate is only $3 more than the on-line version. By using the downloaded version, I did multiple detailed "what-if" returns. I saved these to evaluate and monitor my options as part of estimating next year's taxes.

My cost for downloaded TaxAct Ultimate, including state E-filing, was about half of TurboTax Deluxe on-line even with a TurboTax discount thru a mutual fund. TurboTax charges you $29.95 for state E-filing; TaxAct charges $7.95. If you owe additional state taxes and want to pay on-line by credit card, TaxAct links you to a third-party service. Since I don't owe added state taxes I don't know what this cost is. (As I recall, you can pay directly by credit card if you use TurboTax.)

I will wait until April to actually E-file because I owe additional Federal taxes. I see two recent reviewers who had issues. But, the conditions they reference do not relate to my return. So, I am posting this review early in the tax season hoping it may help people who are researching their tax software options.

"good program bad tech support", I used this program in 2006 without issue and thought it did a great job. Unfortunately I received an error when pre-qualifying my 2007 return this year. The only way I found to communicate with tech support was via email and after 3 days of back and forth I gave up. All they did was parrot back the original error message and advise I call the IRS. Well, I did call the IRS and they said to try someone else's software! So I did and got my return filed electronically just fine for a similar price also. I think if you have a pretty basic tax return TaxAct is a great value for the money. However, if you have a 1099 with code 3 and federal withholding, run the other way unless you want to mail in your return.

"Still a Way To Go", I really wanted to switch to 'Act' this year, TurboTax having failed to honor their grarantee some time back and TaxCut's big price jump while still apparently failing to fix their clumsy NYState program, BUT 'Act' only imports from its own '06 filings, not from the file you would have saved from another '06 program - I'll need this data for computation of any penalty if my Estimated Tax Payments were too small [and it's a pain to re-enter the standard data at a time when I'll need no added frustration.]

To me, this also indicates a lack of serious thought on their part which just may extend to the basics of the program itself - the Price Hikes gave them an excellent one-time marketing advantage this year and it seems to me that they blew it!
