"Worth it!"
After watching every Cintiq 12wx video on youtube and other video sites I randomly found online and reading forums and random blog posts on it. I've been waiting for my cintiq for over a week now and it finally came today and I love it! Some reviews scared me by people saying it's shakey or they got a screen with a dead pixel, etc.
But I'm loving this one :) The only problems so far are not it's fault probably but a couple of programs are glitchy with it for me in Vista 64bit, namely ToonBoom and SketchBook Pro. But SketchBook might just be because of my weak graphics card and it runs pretty good with all the other programs I've tested it with on Vista so far, namely, photoshop, flash, painterX, artrage and sketchbook's glitch isnt that bad but when you select a radial tool it looks weird for a second until I click it again..not really a problem though just looks bad. But toonboom it's unusable...for some reason its not refreshing the screen.

But these are probably not the cintiqs' fault it might be I need a better graphics card. I may buy a mini-dvi converter for my macbook but I haven't tested it via vga on either mac or vista but it is great via DVI in vista64 so far so I like it.

The screen is not much smaller than my macbook 13" and it appears bright and I havent done any color correction or anything to it yet. I really love the customizable radial popup thing that my Intuos3 6x8 didn't come with. Also, it's great that my intuos3 pen works with the cintiq so now I have 2 :) (one i put the felt tip in and other the spring loaded tip) I did also buy a 'classic' pen but that isn't here yet. The cintiq came with the same fat pen like my intuos3 (I knew that that's why I bought the classic pen that will come tomorrow, i miss my intuos 1 slim pen) but it's darker.

I've calibrated both pens a bunch of times and it isn't perfect...but I didn't expect it to be exactly like pencil and paper ;-) But pretty close and very fun.

This was worth waiting for and although I wish it wasn't so much money I'm glad I opted for quality over getting a tablet pc (quantity) like my bf said...I'm very impatient and was close to just going to a retail store and getting a tablet pc ;)

ps. in Flash CS3: I LOVE that I can put all the main windows in my other screen and just put the 'canvas' on the Cintiq part with the drawing tools and gives me more room :)

"For those of you who have doubts."
Let me start by saying that i'm not surprised by the some of the negative reviews this tablet has received. I am very well aware that this tablet is not perfect. I went in knowing that but decided to take the plunge anyway. Do I regret it? Not a single bit.

A tale of an artist's sorrow.

As an artist I have struggled for the past 6 or so years trying to find a balance between traditional and digital artwork. During college I had a chance to work in both mediums, and when I started making money I decided to take it another level buy hardware and software to meet my needs. It wasn't a tough decision. It was either that or a $1000 set of copic markers. So Two and a half years ago I bought an Imac and a Wacom 6x8 bluetooth tablet shortly thereafter. I was happy with my Mac(and still am) but hardly ever used the tablet. I just couldn't get used to it. I knew the size was small but I couldn't afford anything better. So the tablet just sat there only to be used every couple of months. A couple months ago when I decided to tough it out and struggle with the tablet....until I tried to turn it and couldn't. I had to cancel a project I was working on because of this. What was the point of doing art if you can't keep up with the digital era or can't afford an abundant amount of cumbersome art supplies.

Then came the cintiq and I thought to myself, this is great! This could be the end of my struggle. But wait. 1000 dollars?! I may as well wait for the macbook touch thats been rumored for the past few years. However, time will not stand still for me. I mean, it's a thousand bucks but hey, you have to invest in bettering yourself sometimes. So I did the research , checked various prices and finally decided it was time to get one. And with that being said, my 6 year drout has officially ended.

I have a large drawing table and an 11x17 scanner which I might never have to use again. The Wacom Cintiq is my canvas. You can listen to the reviewers here talk about all the minor technical issues, hotspots and preference in digital pens. As an artist and not a computer nerd, I can tell you that the cintiq is worth the money if you keep in mind that that it's not perfect just like any computer or device. And thats the reason i'm giving it 4 starts instead of 5.

And for those thinking of getting a tablet PC, make sure that it is what you truly want. If you travel a lot I would recommend one because the cintiq is not as portable as one might think. But keep in mind that your making an investment in you as an artist and not on a computer. Most tablet PCs are known to have lag and generally aren't built specifically for digital art. Also, keep in mind the advancements in hardware. You can take the cintiq and connect it to any PC or Mac. You can't yank the screen out of your tablet PC and attach it elsewhere once the hardware becomes obsolete. At least not without the expertise.

So before you think of the money you spend, the things that it can do in comparison to a tablet PC, or very minor technical issues, think of yourself as an artist. And if your one of those like me who had no canvas, rest assured that there is one waiting for you.

"Awesome!"
This is one of the coolest things I've ever bought but if your not an artist of some kind don't bother because the price will put you off for casual use. Having said that, it has paid for itself already by making my work go quicker. I don't need my light table, drawing table, or scanner anymore. Not to mention the money you save on traditional media. It's also nive to have a second monitor for extra work space. My only gripe is the price is a bit to high and it gets a little shakey when drawing in the corners. I'd give it a 4.5 if I could. But otherwise its AWESOME and worth it if you can afford it and will use it everyday.

"Hopefully 2nd generation will improve a lot"
At first glance, it's an amazing product. It's a great size, it's thin, bright, with nice buttons and a nice pen.
I just got mine and am using it to work with as a normal tablet (to control the cursor on my main screen), and also to work directly on and draw/paint.
I use a 21" Cintiq at work and also have a 6x8 Intuos 3 tablet that I used before getting this new 12" Cintiq.

The 12" Cintiq has a lot of flaws - so much so that I think I may have to return it, which is really disappointing.
First. Though it's a "12-inch" screen, I'd say it's more like a 10". Why? Because when you move the cursor to the edges of the screen - a little over an inch away from each border, the cursor starts to shake tremendously. This simply doesn't fly when you're trying to keep a steady hand and get a good line while drawing or painting. It's also very annoying when you're just trying to click on something in the menu bar at the top of the screen. The cursor looks like it's spazzing out and it's really hard to live with.
I think part of the reason for this may be because of the limited 2-point calibration, as someone else who reviewed on here talked about. The calibration is just nowhere near refined enough.
Like I said, I also have a 21" Cintiq and I don't have this problem with that. They just didn't do a good job with the 12".

Second. The excessive cables. They really need to figure out how to slim this down and simply it - and I think they could. Before you buy look at the manual online and see all that you have to do to get this thing working. If you're thinking about taking it with you on the go with your laptop, forget it. There's so much to have to deal with. I don't see why they can't just make a simple cable like Apple's Cinema displays - it plugs into the DVI port, a usb port for the pen to work, and then a power brick, which then plugs into the wall. That'd be so much simpler. The cintiq itself is very thin - so it lends itself to portability, but when you have to consider all the extra cables and connections you have to make, it doesn't work out so well.

Third. The quality of the screen. It is cheap. When I first plugged it in I wasn't disappointed - I saw my desktop background on this small 12" screen and it looked nice and bright. But then I started working with it. When you're actually drawing in Photoshop the line doesn't look nearly as crisp as on my Apple Cinema display. Text also suffers. Just reading through web pages it's quite noticeable. I think another review said that they just used a cheap laptop screen, and after working with it for a couple days, I think that person was right.

There are nice things about it. The design is nice and like I said before, it's nice and thin so it sits nicely on my desk (a problem I have with the bigger ones is that they are SO bulky).
It's easy to pick up and put in your lap. And the stand is nice too.
I really wish that it didn't have the problems that it does because I'd love it to work well.
My main problem has to be the cursor jumping around and shaking - it's really awful and I don't think I can stand it. It's worst at the edges of the screen, but you can't even click and drag to scroll down a web page without the cursor shaking. It's not only annoying, it's almost unusable. I'm used to using my Intous 3 and my goodness - what a difference. That one is SO much better at tracking your pin movement.

Worth $1000? Not at all. Hopefully they'll come out with a better updated one sometime soon - then it may be worth the price.

"A thing of beauty!"
I have been using Wacom tablets for years now and have always loved them. I found them easy to use from the start, perhaps thanks to all the "blind" drawings I had to do in art school. There was always something missing, though, and I never had the finesse with a stylus that I have with pen and ink etc. This new tablet fills that gap quite nicely, and, although it is rather pricey, it is no more than I am willing to pay for great results. The wires seem to be a sticking point for some, but once set up they are not so bad. It is a monitor, after all! Even though I may lust after the larger version, it is probably a little much for my needs. What can I say?.. I love the new tablet!

What our customer's say!

"Way too much fun", I know how I lived with out it, but I wish I hadnt. This thing rocks. I have used pen pads before, but with it being a display and working right on the image is outstanding.

"Inexpensive pen tablet display for an expert: Wacom Cintiq 12WX", If you are working in the area of digital imaging, or using image processing software as a hobby, and if you have used pen-tablet devices often, I guess that most of you are hoping to use a pen tablet display, which (hopefully) provides you with a more natural working environment. If you are worrying about the price, and if you don't know the Wacom Cintiq 12WX (12WX or the tablet below), this could be the best option for you with its relatively low price ($1,000).

12WX is a 12 inch monitor that functions as a pen tablet, which means it is a sensitive touch pad when using an electronic pen.

Compared to the other models of Wacom, this one is thin, light, and small. You can connect it with your additional graphic driver and can use it as a secondary monitor with its tablet functions. Because it is light, you can design/write/illustrate on your lap like a laptop. This is the biggest merit of this device, since it allows you a more natural environment. You can work using the display only, and also you can work while watching another big display after synchronizing the tablet with it. But this is all what the $1,000 device have.

If you are planning to use it as a secondary display, it seems to be a bad idea. 12WX's view angle is pretty poor, and you can't read small characters well if your face is not orthogonal to the tablet. This is not a substitute for a usual display.

12WX is surely light. But this is true only if you are counting the 'display' device. It has complex cables with a (relatively) big setup box, which probably exists to convert signals between DVI and VGA. They reduces the potability severely, and it is very bothersome to re-arrange cables, frankly.

So, is this rubbish for $1,000? No, I don't think so. It is still a very good option for you, if you want to enjoy a more natural environment at an economical price. I especially recommend this to experts in computer graphics since it allows you to do high-level work with much greater ease.

"Not so much. ", I bought this tablet and ultimately had to return it within a few days. The resolution on the screen makes the tablet pretty useless for detailed retouching. I ended up just using it as a regular tablet because my laptop screen was able to bring up more detail and had higher resolution... I only have a 15" mac.

Also, the point tends to shake a lot even though your pen is not moving... this is especially true after the tablet has been running for a while. I haven't gotten a chance to use the 21 UX quite yet... so I cannot compare the two, but if you are looking for accuracy or detailed retouching I would definitely recommend not purchasing this until there are vast improvements made on the resolution and pen accuracy.

"Professional Artist's dream come true.", Being a professional artist focused in digital medium, this isn't the first digitizing pad I have used, and definitely not the first Wacom. However, as a person also used to traditional mediums, I have always had frustrations with the normal pad style (i.e. your hand being in one place while your eye is elsewhere). The Cintiq has been perfect to assist this.

First, I will note, if you are not a professional or a very serious hobbyist, I would suggest a more affordable choice in the Wacom line, as this certainly is overkill for the casual user. But, if you, like me, are an industry professional with a desire to streamline your work method and improve your stylistic ability and hand-eye coordination, this is definitely a great choice.

It is easy to set up, fairly light, and comes with 10 useful programmable hotkeys as well as scrollable touchpads, great for zooming or changing brush sizes on the go. It allows easy transition between monitors for a dual monitor set up, meaning increased workspace.

The pen is thick and longer than its sibling products, and sports a rubber grip. These three facts make the pen more ergonomic and comfortable for long time-frame use. The tablet also comes with the ability to be laid flat or at an angle for your preference, and allows for rotation if you wish to turn the pad at an angle to better draw, say, a curve that normally goes against your hand's ability.. This saves your wrist and allows more fluidity while not looking awkward on the screen.

Addressing the cord issue: given that it is both a monitor and a touchpad, I will admit it is very cord heavy. however, past the adapter box, there is only a single cord going to your tablet and it has several feet of length. So if you really dislike cords on your desk, it isn't that hard to organize the ones behind the box to get them out of the way. I consider this a small price to pay for the usefulness this product offers me. One will also note, that given that it is a monitor, you will want to double check before hand that your video card is compatible with a dual monitor set up, however this is easy to find on your video card company's website. If this is your ONLY monitor, there shouldn't be any reason even a basic video card can't run it.

Its ultimately the best of a dual monitor station and a pressure sensitive pen tool in one, and it creates a far more natural feeling that a painter or designer will be used to in traditional mediums.

"cintiq 12wx delivers, period", I have used any WACOM you can think of (OSX, WIN, 5x4, 9x12, 12x12, 6x8, serial, USB, ADB, oldones, newones, you name it)...

then...

I used a feature loaded TOSHIBA tabletPC (512 levels), helped a lot but I also have 8x6 INTUOS3 and 1024 levels are FAR better (I hate small light pens since I was in college)...

got myself a 12xs for the office, 965dls worth every penny, the best I bought so far.

my friend has a 21U (4:3) at the office (tried it), later I am gonna gonna get myself a 21UX (16:9) for myself at home :)

bottom line: it makes every other WACOM look like a mouse, a good hitech mouse but a mouse.

If you can afford one of 'em, and gonna make money out of it...
YOU MUST BUY ONE.

I am an art school graduate, with 15 years of experience working on design, illustration and animation. I do both PC and Mac, and have tested my cintiq with PAINTER X, photoshop CS3, sketchbook PRO, with both WACOM regular GRIP PEN and 6D PEN.

PS/ about the cables the little box and the 2 point calibration thing... well that is the dark side of the 12wx, but it ain't that bad.

BUY IT !!!

"Great!! (Wacom Cintiq 12" Pen Display)", Wacom Cintiq 12" Pen Display
This is really great! Just draw on your screen!
But I have few problems with it. I don't know if it is drivers problem, but it is not using the full screen.
And that pen, I am not sure how to charge it when its battery is consumed. Or is it working without battery?
..And the wire from the display. It is attached to it. I wish it was a plug so I could replace it in case it was damaged.
I am enjoying my product nevertheless. It is great despite all that =)

"Great Beta test, when is the REAL product coming out?", I believe that most of us got this product because we are heavily into animation or other digital arts. Anyone who tried this can tell you; nothing beats drawing directly on the screen.
However, when the CINTIQ 12WX costs as much as a loaded Tablet PC (at least it was at the time of this writing), and when you use this professionally all day for a couple of months the "WOW" effect fades out and reality sinks it...
It's HOT
The biggest problem I have with this product, the lower portion of the tablet (where you rest your hand) gets REALLY hot in only a couple of hours (I mean annoyingly hot, not lukewarm). I place a microfiber cloth under my hand when I have to work longer hours.
I know that the heat comes from the back lights for the screen, yet this seems like a design flaw, since the top of the tablet doesn't get hot, nor does my brighter, larger, LCD display.

This brings me to the screen :

The Monitor is very low res. compared to my DELL laptop's screen, this is soo unsharp, soo unbright, it is annoying, especially after working for longer hours. You also have to deal with Annoying reflections. And the screen smudges very easily (this happens with all LCD's and should be expected).
This means you will definitely need another screen to inspect your work.

Accuracy and calibration:

With only 2 calibration points, the tablet is only accurate in the middle part of the screen, and with the limited real estate, you are really limiting yourself. So if you think you are actually painting where the pen is, you are wrong except in the middle part of the screen.

Sensor bars: sometimes they are so sensitive, on other occasions they are not responsive. ( some drivers issues I presume!)

Portability??

"The Cintiq 12WX enables you to work wherever you feel inspired. It fits into everyday laptop bags ..."

Are they kidding? Nowhere in any of WACOM's advertisement for the CINTIQ do you see any cables, and although you know that this is not wireless, and you know that there must be communications between graphic card and screen, and computer and tablet portion, you will NEVER imagine the cable jungle this device creates! It is a big hassle just to take it from room to room!

The Grip Pen.

Although I have used the Grip Pen with Intuous3 and really liked the feel, working with the CINTIQ 12 WX you realize how BULKY it really is. It is like drawing on a regular paper using a very large dry eraser pen. You can't see what's under your pen tip. Drawing small details becomes a hassle, you constantly zoom in and out to make sure your are drawing details correctly.

As a WACOM fan, I believe they can make a great product out of this, they said they will release an update driver soon, we hope that should fix the inaccuracy issues.
The Heat issue, will probably be fixed in future releases, so, wait a bit before taking the plunge.

As someone who has been using WACOM tablets for the last 10+ years. This is a product I would expect MICROSOFT to introduce to the market not WACOM.

"* joyous * for game art texturing , illustration and ZBrush", I've been using the Cintiq for a little under a month. Personally, I love it. My main reason for buying it was to texture 3d models in Photoshop, but I also use it for graphics in Illustrator, digital painting, and oh so blissfully for sculpting in Zbrush. Hot keys can be made on a per-program basis, and although I need to key things in on the keyboard once in awhile, I don't feel like the hotkeys are lacking. Although there are some flaws in the system, none of them have been anything I felt caused me any sort of inconvenience.

Personally, although I am fairly used to using these programs with a mouse or an Intous, using the Cintiq seems to save me time and gain accuracy, as well as giving it the more personal feeling that conventional drawing gives me. To me, it's as joyous as using a sketchbook and pencil.

There are a lot of wires, but if you generally use it at a desk, these aren't a problem at all. Although it's not really portable, you can stick it in your lap or use it from the couch just fine as long as you are within 6 feet of the computer it's tethered to.

There is a odd hotspot right about where a right handed person will put there wrist. It gets warm, but not to the point of discomfort. It's just odd.

I have had no problem with accuracy in the pixels on the border of the screen, Since all I mainly need in that area is to click the "new layer" icon or other less fine tuned sort of functions.

I love the toggle to another monitor, I pile all my menus there and have more screen space for drawing or painting. one click brings your pen icon to the other monitor and you can still control the pen to make your selection there.

a bigger screen would always be nicer, but it's about the size of a piece of regular paper anyway. I always use zoom to get in tighter even on my larger, desktop monitors.

The price tag is hefty, so the clincher is really how much you are going to use it, and if you feel your work would benefit from more intuitive control.

Personally, I have no complaints about mine and have found extensive applications for it's use. I find it very enjoyable to use, and use it with enough frequency that I do not feel scammed by the price tag, It was more the inconvenience of saving up for it in the first place.

"Cintiq 12wx my personal review", I did a lot of research on this product on the net before taking the "leap". I do not regret it one bit. This is an excellent product. Wacom has always been my graphics tablet of choice, but this product combines the best of displays with the ability to draw on screen as well. Excellent workmanship and quality. The only part I wish that was different is the interface connector box. It is a bit cumbersome. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who draws for a living or passion.

"one of the best tool digital artist can have!", I had my eye on Cintiq 21"UX for a long time, but just couldn't get it because of the price. After I found 12wx, I save some money and get it right away.

The product is GREAT! works very well as I imagined, I been using intous3 for a long time, and I can say I adapt it and use it pretty well, but when Cintiq has arrive, it brought my working experience to a whole new level! it is much more accurate, faster, and natural to work with! The 12" is not big, but I'll say a good size, and the light weight design is very easy for you to move around, rotate and placement. I put it on my lap to work for a while, and put it on my desk (the stand on it is awesome) for a while, it is just so easy to move around and work. I use both standard wacom pen and 6D art pen and it works like a dream!

There are some few drawbacks though, like everyone says, the video control box is kinda messy with all the cables connects to it, if they can make the box smaller than it'll be easier, and I don't understand why do they have to make another bulky AC adapter instead of just a power cable running out from the box.
The other drawback is the monitor itself, it is not bad, the quality is similar to a macbook pro monitor (which imo is fine), but is it not as bright. I adjust and calibrate the color and that helps, but I also notice probably because it is matt finished screen, it won't be as bright and vibrant.
Also, a pen holder on the tablet will be a plus.

Overall, it is a wonderful product, and as a full time artist, it is the best tool I can invest!
