Others say...
"Just OK material, adding Luther Dickinson was genius..." I love the first two Black Crowes albums. I downloaded another one of theirs that was made around 2000, and it was total garbage. This album ranks in between the two extremes, albeit a lot closer to the first two albums. I was excited to read that Luther Dickinson was hired to replace Marc Ford, as I have always been a huge North Mississippi Allstars fan. However, the material doesn't quite live up to my expectations. A bit boring. Some songs are pretty good, but....now if Luther had played on the first two albums, they would be INCREDIBLY SMOKIN'!!!!
"-=- Older & Wiser Crowes -=-" This is the first Black Crowes cd released in a while, 7 years to be exact. With this release, the band has another new lineup. The driving force behind the Black Crowes, the Robinson brothers are still here. I find this release more laid back than some of the previous releases. Generally, the songs are all good, although there really are no songs that I feel knock your socks off. There will be no songs that change the landscape of the music scene, just good rock and roll. I wish I could rate it higher. My 4 stars is more like 3 1/2 stars, but admittedly it changes everytime I listen. It fluctuates from 3 1/2 to 4 stars every time I listen. If you are a fan, buy with confidence. If you are a casual listener, of course check out the snippets included here on the Amazon site before you buy.
"Growing on me..." I was excited to hear about a new Black Crowes album, to say the least. I expected an album much more inclined towards rock and roll, something towards the edgier side of the Black Crowes. Upon the first listen (I give every new album three listens before I say something definitive...), I wasn't so excited. Very Southern, very folky. Not what I expected, nor what I wanted.
After the second and third listens, I started to hear a lot more in it. "Goodbye Daughter of the Revolution," "Josephine," and "Wounded Bird" started to stand out. Then...
Let's just say that in the past two days, I've listened to the album in its entirety three more times. I LOVE THIS ALBUM! It ended up being one of those sets of songs that took a while to grow on me, and I can't wait to start putting some of these tracks in my playlists. If you've got any sort of tolerance for the growth of rock and roll, buy this album. These guys still know how to stick it to the man.
"Top 5 best of 2008" There have been quite a few good albums that have been released in 2008, which raises the hopes of many that good music is coming back. One of the highlights is the highly anticipated Warpaint by The Black Crowes. Their best album since Amorica, the Crowes go back to their roots and even though the brothers Robinson don't get along socially, they have always had a spark musically, and it's never been more apparent than on this album. Songs like Movin on Down the Line, Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution, Whoa Mule, and a cover of Reverend Charlie Jackson's God's Got it, are highlights and shows a whole other spectrum of unexplored ideas the band previously had not endevored. Warpaint has everything a good Crowes record should be. It's not contrived, they still have their authentic classic rock/blues sound they have perfected over the years, and it's an album that grows on you through multiple listens. You notice something different each time. Overall, this is a flawless record in the sense that there are no bad songs on it, and it brings back redemption to a band who, for many, lost their way. Well, they've found it.
"Misleading Title" Based on the title WarPaint, I would figure that the Black Crowes new CD woud be loaded with hard rocking tunes with a few country laden numbers thrown in for diversity's sake. This is completely not the case. There are maybe four or five rock oriented tunes and there is just no oomph to any of them. They creep along at a slow sluggish pace. The softer more acoustic side of the band is a bit refreshing. The arrangments are clever but somehow one feels that the band is not playing to their strength by getting so mellow
The songs themselves are hit and miss. Daughters of the Revolution and Wounded Bird have fairly memorable melodies. However other tunes take too long to get started. I'm not a big fan of this band. However, the debut Shake Your Money Maker is the prototype that this band should have continued to follow. Too many songs on here are just plain forgettable.

What our customer's say!
"Completely Blown Away", I consider myself a casual BC fan. I saw the Crowes doing an acoustic set on Palladium (HD Music channel) and it got me re-interested in them. I came to Amazon.com and listened to a few samples and from what I heard, it sounded great! So I went and bought the album, popped it in, and from beginning to end was BLOWN AWAY. I have not heard ROCK MUSIC in YEARS!!! THIS was what I have been missing all these years. Oh Josephine is one of the most soulful songs I have heard. Locust St. is an awesome low-key song, and when you throw these songs on here with songs like Evergreen and Walk Believer Walk, you have the perfect rock album. Just, incredible. If you are a fan of ROCK, not this crap that is being put out these days, but true rock.....especially southern rock.....BUY THIS ALBUM!!!
"Very, very much on top of their game", This album of the venerable BLACK CROWES shows an extremely mature band totally on top of their game. The Black Crowes have always followed the raunchy guitar driven rock mold of the early seventies greats and have done so with more than exciting results. Never have they struck me as so incredibly fearless, so incredibly certain of themselves. This album carries flavors of what are in my humble opinion some of the best records made during my lifetime. There certainly is some of the fearlessness, the almost-sounds-like-a-demo-ness of the Stones Exile on Main Street. Matter of fact, the track God's Got It could have been included in (LP-) side 3 of Exile's original double-LP-set. But I also hear flavors of the first Chris Jagger LP, of Ronnie Woods better solo-work, of the Family.
But what most strikes me when listening (again and again) to Warpaint is the almost arrogant not-in-controlness-equals-total-in-controlness atmosphere. Almost as if they released an album of first takes, with the occasional slip-up here and there, but with all the enthusiasm and FUN and raw musicality this would bring.
Chapeau, gentlemen. Your album has immediately made it to the 'deserted island' list. And thank you, for countless hours of decibel-filled enjoyment.
Teye
And BTW what f***ing great guitar tones!
"The time off did them good (4.5 stars) ", The Black Crowes' seventh studio album, Warpaint, clearly shows that the time off did them good. Before this, it appeared by their output that the band wasn't sure who they were. Their albums bounced from a loose rock band in the spirit of the Stones to more of a jam band and then to a straight out hard rock band. On Warpaint, the Black Crowes have become just a great American band that can take a variety of genres and create a sound that is truly their own. Musically, this is their best album and their songs are at their most consistent. While there is nothing here as catchy or memorable as "She Talks to Angels", "Jealous Again", or "Remedy", tracks like the countryish "Josephine", the ballad "There's Gold in Them Hills", and the woodsy "Whoa Mule" are among their best work. The opening "Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution" is a great dirty rocker while "Walk Believer Walk" has this cool chopping rhythm and tons and tons of slide guitar from Luther Dickinson. "Locust Street" is another strong melancholy ballad while "Evergreen" has a sick groove. "We Who See the Deep" has another cool groove with a riff to go along with it. "Movin' on Down the Line" and "Wounded Bird" are strong rockers as the former starts out with an eerie organ line before building in momentum while the latter is driven by more of Dickinson's killer slide work. Finally, "God's Got It" is a bluesy shuffle that works very well. All told, Warpaint is a return to form for the Black Crowes and you could argue that it is their best album. Highly recommended.
"FINALLY! ", Perhaps the greatest CD of all time, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, was the second by the Black Crows and therefore set them with an insurmoutnable task of ever creating a better CD. Amorica was quite solid even if it was a bit too 'doctored' with all of the studio alterations. But after that, the Crows seem to settle into some kind of 'We paid our dues, now we can just sell plastic discs'.
WELL, brothers and sisters, the Black Crows are BACK!
Warpaint is phenomenal! It is what we want from the Crows, Southern, Soul, Rock, Roll!
Robinson has finally gotten back in touch with his inner Shaman, and he rattles the lyrics out with syncopated elegance like a rattle snake Rattle. The piano makes you feel that you are in an old saloon, and the percusion is SO FUL. The guitars are a bit toned down relative to other Crow's CDs, but HELL, its so FFF'n worth it that I dont think anyone will complain. I could go into what songs I think are the best (Movin on down the Line), but I wont try to preach to you about what you like best of the Crows.
Buy it! Its better than 3 snakes, Lion, Shake $, By Ur Side, AND Amorica!!!!! Its alright Brothers, its alright Sisters
"There is'nt new material, same ordinary things..", I love Black Crowes and was waiting with great anticipation for This album. I try to love it....but I can't.
It's boring. I've got all their CD's. I just don't care for......and Warpaint is falling into that category.
I keep trying to like it, but I can't fool myself. I read some of these other reviews and make me wonder.
Ordinary album. All songs weak and bad. I am not remembering one song in album.Must be work for good works.
You might need this...
Read this reviews before You buy...
"I really hate to say it, but...", For some reason this CD still leaves me pretty cold (even after 20 or so plays.)
My wifes loves it, but it just seems to be missing something to me (possibly Marc Ford?)
Don't get me wrong... Chris has never sounded better and Steve Gorman lays down one of the greatest groves in the biz to this day, but it just can't hold a candle to "Southern Harmony" or "Amorica" IMHO.
It's still a great listen (especially with all the other BS clouding the airwaves these daze!)
Just my 2 cents friends... mOOn
"New Album Black Crowes Rocks", Black Crowes not there best album but still pretty great music, worthy additon to any music library.
"Back in semi-Black", The Crowes have always been a live jam-band. Their cd's have never really lived up to their live performances, except for the first few released. Warpaint caught me off-guard when I first heard it, and I really didn't like it - without Marc Ford on lead guitar. The album seemed to go in different directions. But on second listen, I warmed up to the sound a little more. The Crowes have to carry-on, because life always goes on. This cd shows the band still has some life ahead. The resulting Warpaint Tour - will be a litmus test for the band, and their long time fans - especially when the band plays their older numbers. But The Crowes have gone through a number of previous transition periods; with Jimmy Page, then a 5-year hiatus while Chris R. was side-swiped by Hollywood. I'm more interested in the resulting tour reviews, than this cd review, which still has it's moments. Too bad the entire disc didn't sound like Track #9. Then it would be entirely a 'Juke-Joint Blues' cd. Something right out of the 1950's. Rock On. (3.5 Stars)
"Best Since Amorica.", Warpaint is easily The Black Crowes best effort since Amorica, and stands up with Amorica, Southern Harmony and their debut as some of their best music, whic is saying a lot. If you like the Black Crowes, buy it. If you like rock and roll, buy it. And listen to it about 5 times until it really kicks in.
"very good cd", The one thing i have always liked about the black crowes is that they have always played music there way. That is the case with warpaint great slide gutair vocals and basslines make this a great album.they are also on there own label now.
