"A fantastic and truly terrifying horror film."
When it comes to scary movies, monsters don't do it for me. Vampires, werewolves, alien beings--they are all entertaining, but not scary. People terrify me; human fraility scares the crap out of me. Which is why "The Mist" has long been one of my favorite King novellas: sure, it's a monster tale, but the REAL monsters in the story aren't the ones out in the mist--they're the ones inside the store. In some cases they are obvious; in others, not.

When I first saw "The Mist," I thought it was a good B-movie, with a classic ending (truly one of the best in horror cinema). I was disturbed more so than usual, but not absolutely floored. But I thought about it. And thought about it. It's been almost a year since I first saw it; I recently watched it a second time (in black and white this time, btw). And I was terrified. The special effects are pretty good, though at times they get in the way of the actors. Let me stress that--the actors, here, are the true stars, not the special effects. Thomas Jane is phenomenal; Marcia Gay Harden is chilling. Frank Darabont does a brilliant job of bringing King's tale to the screen (even King himself has stated he wished he'd thought of this ending).

The story, for what it's worth, centers around a group of people trapped inside a convenience store. Outside the plate-glass windows is...the mist. The mist and the deadly, flesh-eating creatures that lurk in it. The real story of the movie, the real meat (and the real scary stuff), is what happens to the people trapped inside the store--how they cope with it, to who and what they turn to for comfort. This is a film that tackles the topic of what would happen when ordinary citizens encounter something truly alien--not something we're halfway familiar with, but something completely outside our capabilities for rationalization. What WOULD happen if strange beings appeared from practically nowhere and began eating your loved ones? How would that affect the human psyche?

That's what King's tale tried to explain; Darabont's film follows suit. It is a haunting, subtle film that will stay with you long after it's over, thanks in part to (what I consider to be, at least) one of the greatest horror movie endings ever. You should also, if given the chance (which thank God you are, on the two-disc edition), watch the film in black & white. The effects come off as a little cheesier...but that's half the fun. Because, with a film this dark and disturbing, we'll take the fun wherever we can find it.

"Just can't beat the book"
Let me preface this by saying that the special effects stunning and the acting was pretty good. In addition, I am fan of Stephen King's work and loved this story in print.
However, the director or the writers or whoever decided to mess with the ending of this tale. The message sent at the end of the movie was pointless and cruel. Stick with the book, you will have a better experience.

"Seeing thru The Mist"
This interpretation of the ever popular S. King short story is brilliant! There is nothing for a true fan of Horror not to like here. The characters, acting , and direction are fantastic. The hand held camera work via the Shield keeps everything unsettled and askew. The creatures are reminiscent of 50's era paranoia films, and enrich the 2nd version of the film in B&W. Yes, there are 2 versions of this film, each equally great. The color version works well and has a great post 9-11 feel. The B&W version , other than a quick shot of a cell phone, fits right into the McCarthy-ism Paranoia of the past. Absolutely magnificent! I have watched these both numerous times and find myself loving it more each time. A true masterpiece! As to the extras, they are numerous and informative. Not too much back patting, but insightful info into the process of the film making experience. I recommend this film strongly to any Horror fan and all fans of King. The ending, love it or hate it, will truly make you pause and reflect upon all that has come before it. I always sit there, stunned in silence, while the credits roll and the music fades....

"FRANK DARABONT, OPUS 6"
**1/2 2007. Based on Stephen King's The Mist (Previously Published as a Novella in 'Skeleton Crew') and written and directed by Frank Darabont. Dozens of customers are being trapped in a supermarket when a strange fog covers up their town. They finally find out that alien animals are hidden in the mist. Stupid monster movie that uses all the genre clichés and is, in the end, just a rip-off of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead [Blu-ray]. If you're looking for a genuine monster movie, take a look at Joon-ho Bong's The Host (Two-Disc Collector's Edition). This one is already forgotten.

"Not scary, just sad and stupid."
If you're looking for an intelligent and interesting horror film... TURN AWAY NOW. The Mist is as cheesy as it gets. It's a poor attempt at horror filled with supersized bugs and a not-so-scary fog. This movie was so far-fetched and the reactions of characters were so stupid, my whole family was yelling at the tv as we painstakingly pushed our way through it.

The beginning was captivating and interesting: A huge storm that caused lots of property damage and an unexplainable fog coming from the Military base, prompting thoughts of chemical warfare. Cut to everyone trying to stock up on supplies in a grocery story post-storm. Next thing you know all hell breaks loose as bloody people are running towards the store screaming.

Then the story takes a sad turn as children cry for their mothers, and a mother insists she must leave to get home to her children. A
crazy religious women begins to get nutty and curse everyone in the store for begining God's wrath, and the story starts to turn into a super-sized bug "God's Wrath" version of "The Reaping."

I'm not sure what turned me off more: the stupid hick men sitting around looking shocked not bothering to close the loading dock door as a teen gets pulled under and torn apart, the same stupid men turning on all the lights in the store inticing huge bugs to land on the window, keeping the lights on as larger bugs break in and kill people, a few of the stupidest men setting the store on fire by accident trying to kill said bugs, or these same stupid men leaving the store to get medicine next door, and then just stairing at the spiders as they multiply and attack them with acid webs. Or maybe it was the overly dramatic and completely idiotic religious psycho who somehow magically convinced everyone that it was the end of the world (where as previously everyone hated her). All that said, it didn't even compare to the pathetic and stupid ending that made me declaire I'm never watching another Stephen King movie again.

"I hated this movie. I hated, hated, hated this movie. HATED it.", This is among the worst movies I have ever seen. The characters are stupid and one-dimensional; the concept too absurd for any suspension of disbelief, and the story goes from dull to violent to absurdly dull. The 'surprise ending' is totally predictable given the cruelty with which the storyline treats all of the characters. I would rather have sinus surgery than sit through this miserable piece of detritus ever again.

Thanks to Roger Ebert for my subject line

"Better than expected!", I am always devided when it comes to book to movie adaptions as alot of times they ravage the story. But overall I was plesantly surpized with this latest Stephan King story brought to celluoid. The effects are done well considering, the plot is very suspenciful (fear of the unknown), and the premise of how the mist/whats in the mist came to be is not explained but briefly suggested at and very interesting. I love movies that leave you thinking and captivated ie: 28 Days/Weeks Later and the Mist is no exception. Over all a great movie, this one will leave you captivated and looking over your shoulder and staying away from dark corners for days to come. Great Job!

"Terrible", Please. King sometimes delivers but this was a stinker. A survival movie where the hero kills everyone but himself in the end? Don't bother even renting it.

""Promise You Won't Let The Monsters Get Me" ", Synopsis: The '07 release `The Mist' unfolds like a Lovecraftian nightmare come alive in a small rural American community. Cloaked within a dense, inexplicable mist that engulfs the town lurks a collection of phantasmagorical creatures ranging from what appears to be large, mutated dragonflies and spiders to enormous monstrosities that would answer to such diabolical names as Shoggoth, or Cthulhu if this film had been adapted from a H.P. Lovecraft novel. Though no mention of the nefarious Necronomicon is ever mentioned surely some blasphemous occult conjuring must have been going on in that top secret military base located on the outskirts of town that released these other dimensional beings into our world.

David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his young son are trapped inside a supermarket with a group of terrified town residents and unfortunate travelers with a storefront wall of glass serving as their only protection from the mist and the horrors that await outside. Thoughts and emotions run wild within their precarious refuge. Some escape into denial, some fall into religious hysteria and some contemplate suicide. Only a brave few seem willing to face the truth and plan an escape, or die trying.

Critique: `The Mist' is an exciting, harrowing film that firmly held my interest from beginning to end. Christopher Lambert look-a-like Thomas Jane delivers a solid performance as the strong and valiant David Drayton who is forced to not only suppress his own personal fear of the incomprehensible menace outside but deal with the mounting emotional onslaught of those around him. I also enjoyed the performance of Laurie Holden as the level-headed but vulnerable Amanda Dumfries and Marcia Gay Harden as the unstable religious zealot Mrs. Camody. On the negative side I wish they hadn't done the too often repeated alien incubation sequence. It was great in `Alien' but enough is enough. The religious fanaticism subplot was also a little over-the-top for my tastes but it certainly wasn't enough to spoil my enjoyment of the central storyline.

When all is said and done it's definitely the Lovecraft inspired monsters in the mist that capture my imagination. I keep seeing in my minds eye those final moments of the film as the valiant few drive through the fog and view all the mayhem and destruction wrought by these creatures. The sounds of their unearthly bellowing and glimpses of unimaginable horror as they move in and out of sight within the thick mist are accentuated by the haunting soundtrack provided by Lisa Gerrard. This is truly an unforgettable image that will stay with the viewer for quite some time.

"Wickedly Entertaining with a surprising ending", Has all of the supernatural effects a horror movie should have. Starts out with a stormy front moving in and ends with tragedy. This movie is by far one of the most original I've seen in awhile. I would suggest this movie for anyone who likes horror with a sci-fi twist. Very entertaining and well-constructed movie.

"Spoiler Alert!", I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Its chucklesome special effects and one dimensional characterisation never get in the way of a good monster flick. The original short story is one of the most gripping Stephen King has done and no director could really go wrong with the source material, however, I'm not as totally convinced as others who seem to want to rate this as a modern day 'Birds'. It isn't. There are too many 'Wait a minute...' moments. And that ending! I love to be surprised and I'm as much for a downbeat end to a horror film as anyone, but forgive me, this was laughable. Talk about twisting the knife one to many times!

Spoiler alert, the ending is nigh... Skip to the last paragraph now to avoid disappointment...

... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

The first thing that jars for me is the tentacles. Our hero hacks one off the monster and when he subsequently explains, to the whole store only a couple of people go back to view the limb. Excuse me? Flying tentacled monster stole the bag-boy? I wanna see!! Then the rubber thing conveniently goes and dissolves. Why? Cause it's a dumb movie...

Then is the rapid conversion of some three quarters of the store to 'fire and brimstone' Christianity. I'm not above turning to religion in a crisis but this happens within 24 hours! The sacrifice of a soldier is thus, unrealistic. Considering we find out, in a cool bug skirmish, that 'the army done it' it would have been far easier and more dramatic for the crowd to turn on the soldier as some means of releasing their frustration at the scientists and the military and then turn to religion as absolution for their murder. It would have been very easy to script that into the movie, making the religious nut a more rounded, sympathetic character in the process. It would also have provided ample evidence of the fraying of these peoples lives and significantly increased the tension. But no...

Third is when the monsters break in. The smaller ones are attracted to the light. The bigger ones swoop to feast on them and then come through the glass. Does anyone turn the lights down, even a little? Even after the attack? No. They revert back to candlelight for sure, but, even though I'm no entomologist, in my experience moths are as equally drawn to a glowing candle as to an arc light. Not these beasties. The store dwellers sleep happily and soundly all night.

The fourth is the ending. Look away now folk's `cause I'm a-revealing all...

It's just too hilarious. The hero escapes with his son, possible love interest and an elderly couple. They drive away unpursued by anything. Anything. Across State lines... Nothing. Passed pile ups and carnage... Nothing (The War of the Worlds is another victim of the 'miraculously clear highways' scenario after a super, mega disaster...) Ridiculous!

And then the petrol runs out. The car stalls. The film could end here and it would be fine; an awesome creature feature. But no... The hero counts the bullets: five people, four bullets. It could end here and be viewed as compelling, with a cliff-hanger of 'Italian Job' proportions. But no... Despite none of the four adults having shown any signs of fatalism or depression they opt to end it. He makes the choice and shoots the others including his son (Utterly out of character! And, hey, no complaining, I warned you about the spoilers!) He screams his rage, leaves the car and heads out into the mist challenging the monsters 'Come on! Come on!' The film could end here and it would have been wonderfully downbeat. Certainly close to the classic status some have given it.

But no...

The mist clears and the Army come trundling along in their tanks and then, SECONDS later, refugee wagons roll passed full of survivors. Barely meters from the outskirts of a deadly, other-world disaster? Nonsense! So, the Monsters are defeated. Oh, if only our hero had waited 60 seconds... His tears flow. His rage and desperation! Oh no!! It's the egg that over eggs the pudding, the extra cook that spoils the broth, the straw that breaks the camels back. It turns the whole movie into a joke. Something you won't want to watch to the end ever again. Darabont blows it.

... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

So, final advice: The Mist is a great, scary, tense movie with convincing CGI (if a little rubber in the prosthetics), frightening set-ups and just a little wrenching on the heart-strings and if you skip the last minute or even the last 30 seconds you'll love it for a long, long time. Just try not to smirk, laugh, guffaw, chortle or split your sides if you stay to the end because this is one movie that doesn't need a directors' cut it needs a studio cut!

"ONE OF THE BEST MONSTER MOVIES IN A LONG TIME! ", I have to say I've grown tired of monster films in recent years as they all seem to have one thing in common.....they suck! 'The Mist' is a great example of taking the best from the old and the best from the new and blending them together for a damn good thriller! The FX are very good, the atmosphere is creepy and the tension is high in this well acted deliberately paced horror/sci-fi throwback to the days of drive-ins! I couldn't help but think of my old PS2 game 'Silent Hill' a little watching this film, with it's thick mist and sirens hauntingly sounding in the background. The two disc is especially nice with a cool black and white version on the film, plus enough extras to keep any monster fan happy for a while!

"Monsters, Inside And Out...", THE MIST was a terrific short story (ok, a "novella") that seemed impossible to make into a movie at the time it was written (the early '80s). Due to King's various creatures slithering, buzzing, or towering above like walking skyscrapers, I figured a movie would never materialize. Thank God for Frank Darabont! He uses just enough cgi to keep things interesting. After all, the hideous monsters in the mist are only as frightening as the human monsters that emerge during the invasion. The folks trapped in the grocery store become their own worst enemies, nearly dooming themselves without much help from any titanic terrors! Marcia Gay Harden (The Dead Girl) is perfectly twisted as the bible-waving Mrs. Carmody. Mr. Drayton (Thomas Jane) tries logic, common sense, and other such useless tools in a hopeless attempt to reason w/ the unbalanced prophet, who soon gathers a group of mindless followers! So, while an army of creatures lumber about outside, the humans fight an epic battle of wills inside. Very well done. Yes, the ending is different from the book. It's also a dark, merciless finalé to this tale of building dread. So, if you can only handle happy endings, you might want to watch YOU'VE GOT MAIL again instead... P.S.- I liked all the characters in this. Laurie Holden (Silent Hill, tvs X-Files) is especially good...

"awesome", Excellent blue ray movie transfer along with a great movie itself. I would recommend this movie to all horror buffs.

"Stupid Characters doing stupid things", It seems the writer intended this movie to be a sort of morality tale about the frailty of humanity and the depths to which people will sink in the face of fear and the unknown. He failed miserably. The characters are unrealistic archetype caricatures, all of which are unbelievably stupid and slow to act in the diferent situations that arise in the movie. Apparently the only archetype not represented is that of rational humane man. Everyone's first instinct is to either kill someone else or start offing themselves like lemmings. This was a terrible movie. Do not waste your time.
