Others say...

"Cop Movie at its Best!"
It has Eva Mendes! That should say enough about this movie! Nah, it's really a good movie with tons of suspense and drama. Watch it and see how'd you feel if you had to fill Markey Mark's shoes!

"They stole a line from Ice Cube"
We Own the Night is a pretty gritty, riveting crime drama. Not real original, but pretty intense and well acted. The story is well told and fairly realistic. Plus Eva Mendes is hot.

A nightclub owner has drug connections and family in law enforcement. He's forced to pick a side. That's basically the story.

Here's a few minor problems I had with this movie though:
-drug kingpins would probably investigate family background before they ask a guy to help run a crime ring
-Duvall & Wahlberg play roles they've done to death
-a citizen being granted honorary police status and given a gun seems pretty far-fetched
-they stole a line from Ice Cube: "Rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6".

Worth a rental. NOT better than The Departed, as the critic on the back of the box claims. Not really that close either.

"It had the potential..."
I saw this movie in the theaters because of the cast and I thought why not? Boy was I wrong. The movie had such great potential with all the star actors and the plot. It didn't live up to the name and kind of leaves you wondering once the movie is over. It was interesting to watch once but not worth buying.

"Both sides think they own the night"
The film is covering well known territory, and it doesn't bring totally new aspects into it. Just a normal "New York cops versus gangsters" flick, imagine a cross of the Departed and Eastern Promises.
We all know that in the 90s, Mr.Giuliani singlehandedly and famously cleaned up NYC (unless it really happened differently, eg via the mechanisms mentioned in Freakonomics). Before his magic touch saved the city, it appears that NY cops were the laughing stock of the streets. Gangsters were in control, it seems.
What we have here, set in 88, is a confrontation between a Russian drug ring and the cops, among whom the father and son team Duvall/Wahlberg is prominent. They have a prodigal son/brother (Phoenix), who happens to work as a night club manager for the Russians and has a Latina girl friend (Mendes). You see right away where this is leading, but then, no, you don't quite. The script succeeds in avoiding overdone predictability. With hindsight, no big surprise happens, but you never quite know how it will unfold.
In other words, if you like the genre, this is a first class product.
Some have given low grades here for the fact that it is not original. True, it isn't very. But I would rather watch a solid movie in a proven and interesting genre than an original bore in a new one.

"Great Movie"
I really love this movie. I would recommend this movie to Joaquin Phoenix or Mark Wahlberg fans. I like both actors very much and to see a movie with both actors was a great pleasure.

What our customer's say!

"Wholly unremarkable", Acting & production was up to par for a movie of today's caliber, which is why I give this movie more than one star.

The entire plot, on the other hand, has been so overdone throughout the years, that creating a movie of this style today would require more imaginative writing. This movie was predictable at many points, and beyond that, did not give me any "Wow, I never saw that coming!" moments.

Glad I watched it on PPV as the 99-cent special, rather than paying to see it in a theatre. Just never came close to hitting home with me.

"A Gritty Crime Drama", Shadow Watcher
Nobody Drowns in Mineral Lake
WE OWN THE NIGHT is a riveting cops-and-robbers thriller that deals with the Russian Mob in New York and Brooklyn during the 1980s.

It's filled with an array of complex characters, terrific performances and exciting action scenes, particularly a shoot-out in a "stash house" and an auto chase that redefines that kind of sequence.

Joaquin Phoenix stars as the manager of a Brooklyn nightclub, owned by the Russian Mob. He stays uninvolved with any illegal activities that may be going on under his nose, until his brother (Mark Wahlberg) and father (Robert Duvall), both high-ranking cops, approach him to help bring down a major drug dealer operating out of the club. Phoenix, initially refuses, but after the cops raid the club and, subsequently, Wahlberg becomes the victim of an assassination attempt, he agrees to go undercover for the police.

Eva Mendes co-stars as Phoenix's girl friend.

When it comes to gritty big city police dramas, it appears that director James Gray is going to be the natural successor to both Sidney Lumet and Martin Scorsese.

"Family ties and drug crime", Story about two brothers, one policemen and the other night club manager whose professional lives clash. While one is following the family tradition of being a policemen, the other is trying to break on his own. This is all good until it turns out that the owner of the night club, a Russian immigrant who is officially in fur business, decides to expand his drug business from Brooklyn to Manhattan. In an effort to secure market advantage and scare police away from his operations, he gives out orders to muscle the police officer who (unknown to him at the time) happens to be his night club manager's brother. And it is at that moment that story starts to unrevel. Loyalties get tested between friends, family members and in love relationships. Interesting film, well told, but pales in comparison to a movie like "Departed". Eva Mendes plays beautiful and seductive girlfriend, but I hope, for her acting future, that she can show more to the audience but the ability to handle hot intimate scenes.

"Fantastic!", This movie was fantastic all the way through! Starts off good, and never quits! Watch it!

"Sooooooo Slowwwwww", They must have passed out depressants to the cast when shooting this movie.
I wanted to jump into the scenes with Phoenix and jump start his heart so he could continue. I believe it was the directors job to get the timing right in this slow mo druggie versus cop movie and he failed miserably.

"Better Than Your Average", Forget American Gangster. Really, forget it. With a good movie like "We Own the Night" tackling the same subject matter with much better results, there's no reason to subject yourself to hours of dragged out gangster worship. But this isn't a comparison paper, this is a review. So let me break it down.

The acting is great. I'm not usually impressed by big names, because as most serious movie lovers know, big names doesn't mean "good movie," but I must say that Joaquin Phoenix has been consistently impressive with each role he's taken of late. In the same way he became the Man in Black for Walk the Line, he completely becomes Bobby Green, making the audience love and hate this guy who can't seem to figure out which direction his life is taking. He's always been around the dealers and hung with them, but he's never become involved with them too deep. His father and brother, both cops, have never clashed with him too much, though their relationship is all tense. However, as the drug situation worsens, Bobby's two lives begin to clash, and he has to pick a side.

Part police drama, part gangster flick, part thriller, and all character driven, this will leave you captivated until the very end. The visuals are always interesting--more than once, I felt like it was shot like a horror movie, what with the dim lighting and moody sets--and the music is phenomenal, particularly a recurring almost childlike theme that plays over all of the key moments. Overall, the movie could have been shortened a bit without losing very much, but as far as executing a story, writer/director James Gray did a commendable job.

This doesn't have any impact at all on my rating of this movie, but I just need to say that the cover for the DVD is horrible. From the design of the words to the two panels on the side with Mendes and Duvall, the entire concept is shockingly cheesy. As I said, that doesn't reflect on my review, but this is a movie that deserves a cover that will catch prospective the eye of a prospective buyer... and this most certainly would not.

One last thing, in comparison to "American Gangster," this movie doesn't go out of its way to glorify the gangster life to get "oooooohs" and "ahhhhhhs" from the crowd. It shows how dirty that lifestyle can get--as well as how appealing it can be--without making it seem heroic, or the cool thing to do. This movie strikes a balance, creating a nice morally grey area that leaves the characters and the viewers questioning which side, if any, is in the right.

7/10

"boring and doesn't tie together", The whole thing leaves you thinking - and I care why? I love all the actors - the premise is good - the storyline is weak and just doesn't come together.
