"Very fun but no replay value" Such a short game deserves a short review. If you are musically inclined, or can at least keep a beat, this game is a fun twist on 2D gameplay that offers variety, challenge, and good pacing.
Unfortunately there is almost no replay value, and the game often requires grinding certain levels to buy new units. It can be very frustrating at times to see a unique, much needed item in the distance, but be unable to grab it before it disappears because there is a strong enemy in front.
The mini games can be insanely hard and often seem to have no connection to the music, and little explanation for how to play or succeed. I found myself having to visit YouTube many times to understand how to pass certain parts.
This game would be a great rental but a less than stellar purchase.
"Best PSP game ever." Patapon is by far the greatest game ever made for the PSP. It doesn't bother with trying to poorly render 3D environments, and instead, goes for the gusto with gameplay bliss in a beautiful 2D side-scrolling environment. The story is intriguing, and the game is overflowing with humor and charm. There's plenty of unit and weapon customization, which creates a deep sense of personalization in the creation of your Patapon army.
A must own for PSP gamers.
"FEVER!!!!!!" It's addicting, this little game. You will soon find yourself chanting the battle cry of the Patapon tribe once you start playing. It's also one of my favorite PSP titles. Not only for it's simplified and stylish art design, but the unique style of game play that has you tapping the PSP control keys in 4/4 time as the Great Patapon god to move your little tribe of Patapons through their quest to find Earthend and gaze upon IT (whatever IT is, they don't know). The patapon warriors (melee, ranged archer, mounted, and spear wielding) chant your command back at you, even though sometimes in a way that can make you lose your rhythm.
Each key is assigned a drum sound and different patterns are used to direct your Patapons (little Kokopelli looking eyeball warriors) through battle. Square (Pata) and O (Pon) are heavily used to move and attack, while triangle (Chaka) comes into use later on and is used in a combo for defense. X (Don) is only used to activate miracles, special effects that you collect along the way to get around difficult obstacles.
By getting the rythm right and not getting distracted you build up a series of commands until the Patapons get battle fever. With this comical battle cry their attacks become more powerful, launching a flurry of spears and arrows at the enemy and you can invoke miracle effects, and the longer you can maintain it, the better you will do.
Go hunting and fight bosses to earn materials and Ka-Ching (money) to create new stronger warriors, or to find gear for existing ones. There are also special Patapons you will find who unlock special mini-games and allow you to earn more resources.
This game sticks with you, and you may find yourself chanting the attack and advance drumbeats while doing other things. Going "PATA PATA PATA PON, PON PON PATA PON...FEVER!!!!!" while riding my bike up a hill last weekend was self-entertaining I guess. My husband thought it was funny, anyway.
While Patapon 2 is in development, this title is an awesome little "must have" game for the PSP.
"patapon phenomenon " this is a great game. it allows you to explore your rhythmic side and your strategical side. rhythmic side, being able to push the right buttons for the right notes and strategical side, by being able to customize your weapons for a better chance to win the battle. win the battle and get ka-ching [money], get ka-ching and get more customizable, strong patapons.
overall: awesome game, might have some hard levels but worth the effort to win them very easy to start a new game, and to understand the controls will keep u busy for a long time!
enjoy!
"Addicting and Fun" I have to say,it's difficult to put this game down. Using your four main buttons on the PSP you tie together strings of rhythmic beats while the little Patapons keep the beat and repeat everything you hit. Each beat has it's own command that tells the warriors whether to attack, defend, move forward or start a special chant. Successfully completing a certain number of rhythms in a row will result in frenzy mode which makes the little guys attacks much faster. This game even comes with a great story line that is pretty easy to follow. While fighting you'll even be able to pickup upgrades which will apply to certain warriors to help you progress in the game like armor, weapons new drums, food and materials for crafting new warriors. Lots of little side areas to to give variety to the game. If you're looking for a fun and addictive, yet easy to play game try this.

What our customer's say!
"Patapon Rocks!!!", Great game. It's so much fun. It's repetitive but in a good way. I recommend it 100%.
"PATA-PATA-PAWESOME!!", I've played the demo of this game and I LOVED IT!!!! It's hard to give the huge eyeball people a bad grade.
"Pack it up, Parappa! There's the door, DDR! Say hello to Patapon!!!", When I picked up this game for rental at my local video store, I had no idea what to expect. After playing it, I can say this: Patapon is without a doubt, one of the most addictive and fun PSP games I have ever played.
The game is simple enough - we are the unseen God of a little tribe of people who look like walking eyeballs called the Patapon. We start out with a small group of soldiers called Yaripon, and embark on a quest to defeat the evil Zigoton tribe, and find the elusive "IT".
The soldier classes are the following:
Yaripon - Spear throwing soldiers Tatepon - Foot soldiers Yumipon - Archers Kibapon - Soldiers on horseback Dekapon - Ogres Megapon - Soldiers with musical horns
Now like any good Role Playing Game (RPG), you have to decide which soldiers are the best suited for each mission. Some are good at hunting, others are not. Some rush headlong into battle, others wait it out and release devastating attacks from afar.
Here's the gameplay twist - for your platoon to perform any action, you have to tap out special drum beats on the PSP buttons.
For example:
Moving your platoon requires the beat "pata-pata-pata-pon" Ordering your platoon to attack requires the beat "pon-pon-pata-pon"
If drum beats are played successfully a number of times in a row, you can unlock "fever mode" - this unlocks more powerful attacks and quicker troop movements. If you miss a beat, you have to start again. As you get more proficient at Patapon, you can unlock more advanced drum beats, create more powerful soldiers, unlock mini-games, find hidden artifacts, discover miracles, and more.
During each mission you can gather currency (known as ka-ching!), various raw materials, and weaponry. These items can be used to create more powerful Patapon soldiers during the level breaks.
There are a few negative items about Patapon:
(1) There is no pause button. Once you start a stage, it can take up to 7 minutes to clear. Any interruptions and it's bye, bye, fever mode. (2) There is an item pickup error. Sometimes when Patapon finish their victory song, they will walk right over some items without adding them to the spoils of war. (3) It's not clear how to "retire" a solider and create a new one. You have to delete a solider in the preparation screen with the select button - I had to go online to figure this out.
Patapon is a fun and very addictive little game. With over 30 levels and 4 mini-games, that's a lot of playability for a great price. This is the only PSP game I've come across that combines problem solving, strategizing, and bongo-beating into a hilarious little package.
If you like rhythm games such as Dance Dance Revolution or PaRappa The Rapper, you will definitely find a lot of enjoyment playing Patapon.
If rhythm games aren't your thing, or if the aforementioned issues would cause you frustration, you might want to skip this one.
Don't worry, the best way to know if you're addicted to Patapon is if someone in your house comes down with a temperature and the first thought in your head is:
"Keep it up!!!"
"Fun but they killed it with the insane difficulty", I was curious about this game as it gained a lot of interest as a rhythm game that would keep the player occupied with the beats to advance in the game. I enjoyed the beginning but smashed into the virtually impassable sequence to make rain, or whatever it was I needed to get through the desert. Looking online to see that it was extremely difficult for other players helped me to let go and have someone else enjoy the first fraction of this game before leaving it in frustration for something else fun to do.
"Musically Challenged? Beware.", I wanted to like this game so badly but it just wasn't happening. I'm not a musically inclined person so I really couldn't get the hang of the beats (as easy as it may seem to others). My patapons kept yelling at me whenever I messed up and I eventually got so angry I just turned it off. I've picked it up again several times since, each time hoping that I could get the hang of it... but it just wasn't coming. I've clocked in hours and hours of frustrated time into this game but with no progression. So be warned, if you are as musically stupid as I am, do NOT buy this game. But, I'm sure it's fun for everyone else.

"Fun and Cheap", I am not your normal video game junkie. The last real game I played was Link on Nintendo. I just can't stand most new(i.e. FPS) games. This game however, is fantastic. Just the right amount of strategy, mixed with the rythym part on the buttons, to make me play it all the way to the end. The graphics are cartoonish, but very crisp. I really like the little eyeball critters! And you will sing the chants in your sleep for weeks(Chicka chicka pata pon!). If you are looking for something new and different, you will love this.
"Great Fun!!", This is an extremely fun game. You guide your army on a variety of missions, whether it be hunting for food or marching them to battle, you command it all with the beat of your drum. You get to build your army, equip them and also build up Patopolis. Great stylized and simplistic art and really cool but simple game play. It's addictive but easy to pick up and put down. I'd give this to younger kids knowing they'd be able to play it and not get too confused. Great overall, recommended for anyone willing to try something new.
"One of the Best in 2008", The game is simple and elegant in nature and gameplay, and has its own unique art style that makes it look modern and/or appealing. Lead your mythical people into war. Singing and Dancing. Beat the war drum in bloody battles. Hypnotic play.
"Interesting, unique and fun.", I really enjoy this game its simple and has a musical toon that will stick with you long after you finish the game, but thats a good thing. The point of the game is to hit buttons with the beat to command your native army to move or attack. Its simple, fun and u can play for short bursts of 10min which I like a lot. Even my sisters son thats 11 years old liked the game even though its a little cartoony for his taste.
"Definitely different ;-)", This game is so wierd it's actually cute - loads of fun! It's kind of a "Simon" sort of thing at the beginning - you match the rythm the game sets for you - the square border around the screen will flash the beat and you copy it, then as you progress it gets more involved and harder. I love the graphics and colors in the scenery too, but MAN does the "PATA-PATA-PATA-PON!" chant get hopelessly stuck in your head!! LOL Addictive little game, really nice for $20.
