"Not worth the price"
For the price this game sells at, it is not worth your money. You will like the graphics but the story line is not that great. I like Gears 1 better.

"COGs"
Not a bad game for a non-fps. Gets a little silly when trying to destroy worm attacking gunboat and shooting down reapers when attempting to flee on another reaper. Anything that gets shot over 500 times should eventually DIE or flee but they keep attacking.

"whinny babies"
whoever gave this game one star shouldnt be allowed to own or play either Gears of War games forever, people always have a way of ruining the fun for others for some stupid little thing that they didnt like that happened to them in the game. "oh, it was too hard," or "everyone only uses the chainsaw in multiplayer," all i have to say is suck it up, its part of the game, the lancer and other new weapons are there to challenge your skill, if u sold it or got rid of the game, good, at least no one will have to listen to u online whinning the whole match. dont rent, buy the game it is well worth every penny.

"More of what you want"
The original Gears of War sold me an Xbox360. Prior to that game, I hadn't seen anything on the 360 that really impressed me and screamed, "This is the next generation!" Gears changed that. And now we're back with Gears2.

Gears2 is a sequel of the conservative kind, which quite frankly, I prefer. Professional game reviewers and editors seem to love when sequels throw in lots of random $H!T out of nowhere, or radically change the fundamentals of the game. They forget that this ends up making a game that has little to do with its predecessor other than its name. Thankfully, Epic didn't go this route, and Gears2 is actually more of the same, but refined and tweaked slightly (and with faster chainsaws).

The weapons are all back, including the beloved assault rifle with chainsaw attached, the game is as gruesome as ever, and the new weapons work well (mortars are amazing...seriously). The cover system has been tweaked so that there are fewer instances where you get sucked against a wall or piece of cover when you were actually trying to run full speed out of dodge. It still happens, but Gears2 doesn't have very many "run away from the big angry monster" moments, so it's easily forgiven. There aren't quite as many "oh $H!T" moments as in the first game, and overall, I'd say the original campaign is more diverse and entertaining. Still, the friendly AI is MUCH, MUCH better, meaning your teammates are less prone to walk out and get themselves killed like they did in the first game.

What Gears2 does have is a deeper, more disturbing plotline, which follows Dom looking for his wife Maria and Marcus learning a bit more about his father and his work than he perhaps wanted to know. However, like The Matrix Reloaded, a lot of really cool stuff begins to take shape, such as the true origins of the Locust Horde, but then the game just ends without bringing any closure to the ideas. Bummer.

The multiplayer is again refined and improved. Unfortunately, it would seem the servers were not. As of the time of this review, online games lag horribly, to the point that you'll enter a room, only to have it jerk around for a few moments before suddenly you're dead and you don't know why. A buddy of mine complained of the same issue, so I'm pretty sure it's not my connection, as we both then jumped into a Call of Duty 4 game and it ran flawlessly. Thus, the verdict is still out on the multiplayer, though it looks promising.

Gears2 is more of the same, but that's a good thing. The campaign is best played with a friend, but is bearable if a bit boring if done solo. The UNREAL engine continues to demonstrate that it's a freaking beast of technology, and overall Gears2 is a slightly better version of an already tremendously impressive game.

And seriously, who doesn't want more of the Cole Train?

"Sequels really do get better"
Games seem to be one of the few media that actually get better with sequels. There are some stinkers out there, to be sure, but games like GoW2 improve on the original so much, I dont know where there is to go for GoW3.

For starters, these are some of, if not THE, finest graphics I've ever seen. The shading and rendering and texturing of brick, metal, shadows....basically everything in the world has a photorealistic look to it, in full 3-dimensions, moving at a fast pace. Maybe its because I grew up with a Commodore 64 and Atari 2600 as a starting point that I am in such awe of the look of this game, but its also the atomosphere it portrays, and the rain, rust, and decay conveyed in the graphics really install the sense of dread that the subject matter of the game is all about.

The gameplay is great, and just when you think things can't get any larger-scale or epic...boom, you are flying a reaver. Like a good movie, this game has favorite scenes which I no doubt intend on revisiting again soon.

I beat this on Hardcore quickly, but not so quickly that I didnt feel it to be challenging.

Lastly, the characters are some of the most well written in any game I've seen, funny, dark, and genuine. These guys stick with you, and so does this game, and the overall experience does what every great franchise game is supposed to: begin to build and create frenzied mania for the next installment!

What our customer's say!

"Amazon deal is faulty if not checked in detail.", I purchased this game because it was on sale and was supposed to include a free 3 month subscription to Xbox Live. I received the game, but know 3 month xbox Live subscription as promised. After looking at the details they explained that you were supposed to add both the Xbox Live subscription and the game to your cart. This was VERY deceptive! The game it self is fun but I personally would not want to pay for it even with the discount without the Xbox Live Subscription. I hate this kind of falls advertising. Sorry if you wanted more about the game. I know this is supposed to be a review on the game, but I have not yet played my copy, but I have tried the game from friends.

"Epic. ", Horrible puns aside, the Gears of War series is the Xbox 360's "other" AAA million selling franchise. Halo, however, this is not; developed by Epic Games, Gears of War 2 is a brutal, bloody third person shooter with an emphasis on finding cover and taking out your opponent by popping out from corners, concrete barriers and burned out cars. Beautiful graphics, wonderful sound and excellent, unique gameplay all combine to make Gears of War 2 one of the best games on the Xbox 360.

The graphics are the best on the system, bar none; fantastic looking character models, beautiful explosions and excellent lighting combine to make Gears of War 2 a treat to look at. It looks better than the first game and sounds better to boot. Technically, the folks at Epic have raised the bar for games to come. Voice acting is spot on, and the story this time even plays a bigger role. Don't go expecting anything of Final Fantasy melodrama or complexity, but the tale is well told, and it keeps the game moving along.

The main draw of the game is the gunfights, of which there are many. The controls are tight and perform exactly as you would like them to, although there are still problems with sliding into cover by accident or, say, executing a downed enemy instead of reviving a teammate. These are minor annoyances, but they can lead to some untimely deaths or losses (in the case of multiplayer rounds), so it's worth mentioning. If you've played the original game, you'll be right at home here; not much has changed (there's some new executions, the ability to plant grenades and use downed enemies as meatshields), asides from the levels, which are varied and fun to dash through. The Locust aren't particularly smart, but they put up a decent enough fight on Normal. The campaign only takes about 6 or 7 hours, which is too bad, although it is good enough that I want to play it through more than once. Replayability is enhanced by the fact that insane mode is unlocked AFTER beating the game. There are some terrible vehicle portions in the game, where you're required to either man the gunner seat, drive or both. The controls in these are almost universally horrible, and it's difficult to aim with your ride bouncing up and down all the time. Some segments are better than others, but none of them are particularly endearing. Thankfully, they're short, but please Epic, cut out these awful parts; the vehicle chapter in Gears of War 1 was terrible as well.

Multiplayer is the core of the title, in my opinion; there's only so many times one can finish the story mode, however good it may be. The hosting process of the first game has been replaced with a Halo 3 style matchmaking system that is hit or miss; it takes awhile to get into games sometimes, and it really shouldn't, considering how many people are playing. We're talking 4 or 5 minute load times here, although it usually finds a match within a minute or so. Also, sometimes the game will drop you mid-match, saying "connection to the host was lost." This is irritating, and although my internet is spotty (so some of the blame lies there), other Xbox Live games don't do this. The highlight of the multiplayer options is the new Horde mode, easily the best addition to the game. A team of 5 is pitted against a swarm of Locust that gets bigger and stronger every round; every ten rounds, they get a boost to their health, accuracy or damage. There are a total of fifty waves, and your high scores are tracked on the leaderboards. It's a great new feature, although not without its problems; it's a pain to hunt down the last Locust of a wave - oftentimes they'll be stuck on some object or hiding halfway across the map. The game essentially forces you out of position to go and hunt down these stray enemies, which can screw you for the next round. It'd be nice if the last few guys tried to kill you more often, instead of camping. Other multiplayer options from the original Gears are back, including Warzone, Execution and Annex. New multiplayer modes include Meatflag (capture the flag with a live person as the flag...) and Wingman (essentially Multi-Team). I highly dislike the versus multiplayer aspect of the game; it's very shotgun/power weapon centric, and latency ensures that if you're not host, you're at a severe disadvantage. There are some people who love it, though, and it's certainly not bad; I just prefer Halo 3's multiplayer. That, and Horde is so much fun that I can't tear away from it.

If you're a fan of shooters and you don't own this game, buy it immediately. Even if you don't have Live, playing through the campaign either solo or with a buddy is great fun. It's well polished, well designed, and has enough variety that it doesn't get stale. The singe player game is slightly short, but it has some decent replay value. The multiplayer aspect of the game is wonderful, matchmaking/lag issues not withstanding. Horde is a great addition to the game and adds a ton of replay value. Gears of War 2 builds upon the original's solid foundations, and the result is one of the best sequels in recent memory. One of the Xbox 360's marquee titles, and a game almost everyone will enjoy.

"Gears of Awesome!", GOW2 is a great game. Epic didn't mess with everything that worked on the first one, they just made the world seem much bigger, and developed the story further. It has some really intense game moments. Very emmersive. Beautiful environments. Great Multiplayer. 5 stars, a must play, definitely on my top 5 games of 2008.

"Terrific Sequel to the first", If you liked Gears, you'll love Gears 2. The story is better than the first. The game overall is on a much larger scale, where you actually feel like your in a war, not just little skirmishes like Gears 1. The gameplay is almost exactly the same, with new weapons...to be honest I had a difficult time dropping my old favs to try out the new ones...but the new weapons are welcome additions.

The fact that now you can carry big weapons (like Halo 3) breaks up the combat with some really fun tid-bits.

Cons: I did have a few bugs with the game. I got stuck a few times in co-op. You still move really slow when you're on the com, which is frustrating, but that's about it for me.

This game is a must-have for any Gears of War fan.

"Game of the Year!", I can't say much more than what has already been said by others. This game is amazing.

":0)", The game was good for me but im still not a fan of the online gaming of gears of war call me crazy but i don't like it.

"Hands down awesomerest!!!", If you like games, BUY THIS ONE. For starters, it's a game, just like it states. It delivers gamey goodness on levels I've never thought possible.

The first game? Awesome.
This game? Beyond awesome. What's the word for better than awesome? awesomerest!!

Online horde is the most fun I've had since Command & Conquer and Diablo from over a decade ago when computers couldn't even stream porn.

The only disappointment... at least for others... is the ending is kind of anticlimactic. How so? If you played GoW1 you know the final "boss" was pretty darned tough. The last thing you beat in Gears2 is relatively easy. The boss before that is tough, but nothing close to the first game's.

There are also a few old characters that could have made it into this one like the Berserkers.

None of that necessarily makes the game any less awesomerest. Just things that could have done that would have added to it.

It's not a question of "should" you buy it... it's a question of "why HAVEN'T you bought it".

"Made in Mexico?", This game says Made in Mexico and is the only game that won't play in the XBOX. It stops about after 15 minutes and says "CD not readable". I'm still waiting for another one to arrive (late do to weather) but I'm afraid this one will be the same problem. I need to return the game.

*Update* I did get the other game I was waiting for Call of Duty World at War...Made in USA and it works fine :)

"Greater character development than the first.", I'm a sucker for a good story, and gears 2 is a vast improvement on the first. The characters actually take on more personality in this installment and you learn a lot more. The story takes some twists and turns and you almost feel like you're watching a movie. At the time of this review, XBox Live play needs a lot of work. Matchmaking just isn't working. I tried to connect yesterday and it sat there for 15 minutes and never found a match. But when you do actually get to play, there's a great variety of multiplayer options available.

"Multiplayer Up and Downs", It seems like everyone is talking about the unimportant topic of single player, but the real game is in the multiplayer, right?

First off, you will notice that the controls of this game have been tightened up where as they felt much more loose in the first one. So you will be able to function without as must frustration. Second, the matchmaking system is borderline dysfunctional. Overall sluggish in finding matches, in fact you will sit for at least two minutes and finally join a game that is of poor quality - laggy if you will. Not to mention every time you decide to back out match making it takes twenty seconds - I can only imagine for the purposes of wasting more time? And do not even bother trying to leave a game in progress because there is no option to leave, you have to power down your entire box. I guess this was a way to remedy the problem of leavers but in reality, leavers are going to leave like they always do.

This game is still Gears of War so be sure to expect most of the garbage from the first one to carry over in the sequel. You will still see people diving around on the ground to dodge bullets, chainsaws that are flukey (even more flukey are the chainsaw battle mini-game that occurs when two players try to chainsaw each other and get locked in a "b" button mashing competition - which often is frustrating and mindless), and of course the revive system. If you remember the first GOW, you get downed by receiving too much damage and your cog fills with blood, then you can only crawl around until a team mate touches you and revives you or an enemy strolls by and stomps your forehead in. This is a huge part of the game since reviving a downed team mate is like an extra life for the player, and thus, making them instantly revive with full health by pressing a button makes little sense. You will literally be in a fire fight that could be close and you end up downing the enemy, as soon as you start walking toward them a team mate will roll out of the corner of the screen and tag them back up, in which you will now have to start entirely over in downing them and their newly arrived team mate. It does not make a lot of sense why there is no penalty here for the downed player, as to start off with low health, or the team mate to have to hold down a button for longer than a second here - but for whatever reason there is an instant revive process, creating an environment that really does not reward a comeback situation - very frustrating or fulfilling depending on which side of that scenario you end up on.

The new weapons change the pace of the game in some maps and others, the new weapons seem to dominate the maps. For instance, Security, where laser barriers can be activated from only two spots in the map, and isolate an area with a mortar gun (which launches a blanket of explosives pretty much anywhere on the map) in a square. Sure the mortar team are vulnerable to grenades or weapon fire, but a blanket of explosives usually comes up victorious in this situation, almost every time. There will also be levels where all the player run for grenades which makes sense, but the new grenade sticking does not. You can essentially stick a grenade to any surface (like how you can stick other players) the catch is the grenade only goes off when an enemy comes close to it (much like proximity mines in Goldeneye), so camping becomes an issue and slows up the pace of a match at times.

One of the best improvements in GOW 2 is the weapon damage, and unlike the first one you will not have to sit there and unload clips upon clips to down someone. Two close ranged shotgun bullets or one close range shotgun head shot will down a foe this time around. Players wielding chainsaws are also penalized more when they are shot trying to chainsaw, allowing the player to avoid getting hacked up as easily. Rolling and dodging has been given a bit of a delay in order to make things more fair. Another improvement is the different options when an enemy player is down, you can stomp, golf swing, curb stomp and take hostage which comes in handy when you are outmatched online(you pick up the player and use your pistol until your body shield gets blown apart - yummy). New game modes such as Horde are a great break from playing other players and focus on a team survival aspect that is fun and challenging, yet other game types such as King of the Hill seem out of place and unbalanced.

Overall, GOW 2 is a great improvement from the first in terms of gameplay. They cleaned up all the rough edges and really pushed to make this game more playable. The fact that I could pop in Halo 3 and play a game quickly compared to Gears of War where everything feels bogged down and clunky (interface-wise) makes this unappealing for a quick game. This game also seems to have trouble online and many matches lag and obviously you will not be having huge matches in a game like this either. Weapon damage is a much needed improvement from the first and makes this game feel more like a shooter and less like a watered down console action game, however it will at times make you boggle "I just emptied a clip on him with an assault rifle and he walked up and downed me with a shotgun" - things have changed but not entirely, think of it more as a tightening of everything - a house clean if you will. There is still no need to shoot long range if you cannot get there in time to stomp them out and seal the deal. You will still be losing sleep and getting a rush when you just took out the last guy for a game winning point but you will also be cursing harder when you see some of the garbage that takes place online. If you liked the first you should definitely pick up this game but if you are thinking about this game as to win you over to the play style of Gears it is just not going to happen. The steep learning curve of Gears will give inexperienced gamers more frustration then fun initially but sticking with it will provide exciting moments. In the end however, too much is left up to chance and imbalance which left a bad taste in my mouth.
