"Compatibility Issues With Other Wireless Devices & Print Servers"
First off I want to complement Amazon for having the item in stock, great price and shipping it to me quickly. Amazon purchase experience was great. NOW - on to my warning folks that may be purchasing this unit to replace an older or existing wireless router. GOOD LUCK.

I think of myself as pretty well versed in computers and wireless devices. This will be the third Linksys device that I've purchased in less than 3 years. Also have set up a built-in wireless HP All-in-One Office jet Pro L7780 (which is great by the way - and so is their customer service). So we bought a new laptop at home and thought why not replace the older Linksys Wireless B router (BEFW1154) with the latest N router that was also backwards compatible with B & G. We had the HP Office jet working great and an older HP Laserjet 1200 hooked up to a Linksys Wireless-G Print Server (WPS54GU2). All was great with this home network and I've moved twice and was able to get everything up in running each time. Sorry to digress, but want to give as much info as possible.

Stage 1 - I should have known something was up when the set up CD would not complete load the program to start the set up. So after another try, I ended up calling the Linksys help-line and after spending close to 2 hours on the phone. Success we had both laptops running and communicating with the new WRT Server. Ended around 11 PM.

Stage 2 - Working from home, I send something to my HP Laserjet printer. SURPRISE - of course it would not print and why wasn't I thinking correctly to realize this. OR - why didn't the Linksys Customer Service person pick this up when I explained my set up and what was running through the server. Okay, it was late at night and my eyeballs were crossed. Tried sending to the HP Office jet. SURPRISE - won't print. Go back to stone age and hook up USB cable from my laptop to HP Office jet. SURPRISE - won't print. So now I'm all messed up. Work to reset the network wireless set up on the HP Officejet which is less than one year old.... it can't find the network or new Linksys. Call Linksys again. Short answer - since I can get on the internet they don't have any responsibility and since the print server is older than 1 year old, I have to pay $39.95 for technical assistance. I ask for a manager and explain the situation again - same answer.

Stage 3 - So started at 11 AM at home and went onto Linksys Support Website - HA!! found similar postings from another users who could not get other wireless devices to connect to the new WRT N Router. Went through each answer from Linksys - and you better be a complete expert to understand the shorthand in their replies because this is NOT for the faint of heart. Went through security settings, IP address, WEP vs WPA, encryption, re-setting of entire system... Finally I uninstalled everything because now I couldn't get even one laptop to connect to the internet. It was now past 4 PM and I'm mad at myself for trying to "push" into the new wireless N-world.

Stage 4 - So I call Linksys again and plead my case in total frustration. I get another Supervisor who see my Case Number and states they can't help since it's the printer server problem and not the wireless router. Then through some cryptic statements because she can't help me directly else the Technical Policy may hear her and realize that she's crossed a line - cause they want me to pay the $39.95 for Technical Assistance - which they state is also on their website which you can read how successful I was in Problem 3 - well she tells me to lower the security on the new WRT and reset the passkey to the old one, etc. She also states that this new router is so new that a lot of folk at Linksys can't support it or know how to deal with the compatibility issues to other equipment. I ask WHAT? So I try again on my own - SURPRISE - no luck. It's now 7 PM and I've completely lost it - no internet again and of course no printing. So uninstall and re-install and I at least can get on-line.

Stage 5 - THANK YOU HP - cause after their great help and remote access into my computer we get the HP Office jet to at least connect to the network and I can print. The HP Laserjet I still have not solved my issue. I guess I'll start looking for another firms wireless print server that may talk to the darn Linksys WRT310. I would just send the thing back to Amazon, but (1) I threw the box out the next morning into pieces - which broke my own rule of making sure things work for at least 30 days - but again it was late at night when I connected and see Stage 1 and Stage 2 - thinking all was great.

I'm typing all this because when I purchase a product, I also purchase a firm/company standing behind it. Especially when I continue to purchase from the same firm thinking all will work together and be helped if I can't figure it out on my own. So unless you work for Cisco or Linksys and can handle it - buy the unit. Else, good luck and best wishes.

"Second to none"
I have used linksys for years now. Even where I work they used Linksys products. I read other review about this product and wonder did they set it up wrong or what. Yes the unit does get a little warm but reading other reviews that was taken care of. The unit runs outstanding. Setup was easy and customer support was very professional when a question arise. My kids notice a changed in speed when playing their video games as I did notice a faster speed on my computer also. I have always used Linksys products and will continue to used them. To me they are worth every penny.

"WRT310N Great N radio for a G price"
I have a home network where I had been using 2 WRT54GL routers - one as an Access Point (AP) and one as a Repeater bridge (RB). I had 5 computers connected to the bridge, 4 other wireless G devices, 2 VoiP adapters and a Roku Music bridge. My ISP increased my DL speed to 30Mbps and I was not able to get this speed over the G wireless - which was maxing out around 14Mbps.

I bought 2 of the WRT310N's - setup in the same configuration where the AP was mixed mode and the RB was G only. The link gives me rock solid 130Mbps. I am still playing with the 40Mhz options but it does not appear as stable - still a learning curve for me.

After instant savings - I paid $73 each for these here on amazon.

A couple notes - First this device has a heat issue due to poor ventilation. My solution was to raise the unit 1 inch with the cardboard tube from a roll of tape. No more overheating. Second, this being a Linux based device, I upgraded the firmware to DD-WRT ([...]). I get many usefule features including a VPN server allowing me to securly access my home network, better QoS settings, SNMP, remote logging and a ton of other stuff

"FAILED"
Failed miserably after 3 weeks' use, and I was only using it as a patch panel! Power light flashes and reset button does nothing. Tossing it out as worthless.

On the plus side the sleek design might make a decent frisbee.

"Not any better than Wireless G with SRX; awful setup software"
I don't think I've given this a low a rating to any other product. The 310N is supposed to have nifty, painless setup software and it should have increased range compared to G routers. It has neither. The setup software on the CD that Linksys provides in the package looks great when it starts, but after the setup routine:

(1) it told me it couldn't find a connection, even though it found the connection at the start of the setup routine. The connection was there -- I could get on the Internet.

(2) The setup CD's software gives you a chance to change the SSID and set security options including the WEP key. I did that, but none of that info was retained after setup! I had to go back into the setup routine that's in the firmware via http://192.168.1.1 just like in the bad old days before "easy" setup software was developed.

But wait... there's more!

In the router's internal setup routine, there's no indication as to how you change the SSID, even though the help screen tells you it's possible. And on the "Wireless security" tab there's a button to chose a manual or an automatic wi fi security option, but the help screen doesn't say a word about what that option does, or when to use it.

With all that, I did set it up properly with security enabled using they key of my choice and a unique SSID. This is about the 10th wireless router I've installed, so useless setup software doesn't stop me. But if you're not knowledgeable... good luck.

All that would be an annoyance enough if the range was better than a 802.11G router, as promised. But the range was inferior to the range of the WRT54GX router this one replaced. So... what's the point?

The 310N is a waste of money. Maybe when the final N protocol is out this thing will be better, but right now you can get better coverage for an 801.11G router that's half the price.

What our customer's say!

"Awesome Router!", I installed the router last night and I finally have full coverage throughout the entire house (both floors) with NO dropped signals. I use a PC laptop for work in the most remote part of the house and I now have 5 out of 5 bars and it has stayed connected continuously for almost 20 hours now. It used to drop the signal every hour or so and I'd have to reconnect. We have the following also accessing the router with no problems: 17" iMac, Powerbook, (2) MacBooks, (2) MacMinis, Xbox and a PS3. The router's performance has exceeded my expectations!
Update: I forgot to mention that I have not had the heat issue that others have mentioned. Mine is barely warm to the touch.

"Long Range Reliable", Good value for the money. Was concerned about reviews claiming it ran hot, and took the advice from one reviewer to stand it on its side. It leans against the stand to a work lamp and has never been more than what I would consider normally "warm". Not to fear! Also, I live on the fourth floor of an apartment building, and the signal is detectable from the ground floor lobby. I would say no problem for those owning a big house! Thanks to Amazon for a good price and delivery!

"Review of Linksys WRT310N Router", I can't really say. I bought this as a Christmas gift for my son.

But I think he is very happy with it.

"Multiple Router Reboots Required", I have had the WRT310N for several months now. I am already on my 2nd unit having replaced the original one under warranty within 6 weeks. The problems with both are the same.

At random intervals, the router's web configuration is inaccessible to any device on the network. The router will respond to a ping request for a period of time. Eventually pinging to the router fails. When that happens, Only those systems that have static IP's can communicate with one another. Anything with a dynamic IP, either wired or wireless is unable to communicate with any other device.

As I stated above, I am currently using a warranty replacement which is exhibiting the same problems as the unit I purchased originally. Linksys tech support is essentially a joke but I've known that a long time. Their "analysts" do nothing more than read scripts that guide you through steps I've done several times before calling them. I am sure they can help someone who is much less technically inclined but the only thing they can do is provide me with a warranty replacement.

After reading some posts here and in the Linksys message boards, I see I am not alone with this problem. Upgrading the firmware was of no help either. I might not mind it as much if the router was not in a room in my basement where I rarely spend time. Sadly it looks as though I will have to invest in another device unless Linksys can find a cause and a solution first, the prospects for which I have very little hope.

"Awesome, Excellent, Incredible, Seriously", I hesitated on buying this router based on the mixed reviews I read. But the professional reviews convinced me. Now, after 24 hours of continual use the modem is not at all "HOT" to the touch (barely warm in fact) laying normally on a desk. I have two PC's running, a laptop accessing the wireless and my son had a friend spend the night and so they had 2 Xbox 360's on wireless, too.

No reboots on the modem, awesome signal range and strength, no heat problem whatsoever, install was the easiest I've experienced yet (having used Netgear and Linksys routers in the past) and from opening the box to running was under 10 minutes using the LELA software. Mine came with firmware version "v1.0.06 build 001Oct 6, 2008" installed, and I probably won't upgrade unless I see a need to.

Either Linksys has addressed some of the problems others have noted, or the other reviewers had a lemon or messed up the install. I for one am happy with this modem; the speed, range and strength of signal are all they're hyped up to be. You'll love it... get this one.

"Good speed "if" it works !!@!!", Used this router for about 2 weeks before I returned it - the setup was easy and feature set / speeds are good - but wireless connectivity becomes intermittent after a few days of operation - then the wireless radio shuts down. Also to make matters worse the administrative web page errors out when the router reaches this state - only way out is to do a hard reset and setup everything again - but the pattern repeats...
Linksys support confirms they have had such issues with the router. YMMV. Try at your own risk.

"Works great on the PC and Mac laptops", I went from my trusty old 11b Linksys router to an N with no stop at G. This is a very nice modem. I installed it with my PC laptop and the installation wizard was a breeze. When I opened my iBook, my new SSID was right there under the AirPort icon. The only problem is AirPort disconnects from the Internet when I'm on my cordless phone. This doesn't happen with the PC and it never happened with the old 11b router.

Neither of my laptops is N, so I got the adapter.Linksys Dual-Band Wireless-N USB Network Adapter, WUSB600N Once again, installation was a snap on the PC. Watching video streams is awesome. Thanks to the insanelymac.com forums, I was able to download the correct driver for the Mac and with some trial and error, I got the adapter to connect.

I'm very pleased with the router and adapter purchases. Delivery was fast. The prices were considerably less than those at Sam's. The router is warm -- not hot. Both laptops get considerably hotter. The only reason I gave the router a 4 rather than a 5 is the lack of support from Linksys for its Mac users. The driver for the adapter should have been included for a Mac, but it's not even mentioned on the Linksys website. I knew better than to call technical support!

"Linksys WRT310N - Acceptable but needs frequent intervention", I'm using this as a G router since I have no N clients yet. The automated install program from the included CD failed so I had to configure it manually using the web interface. The client connections (wireless and wired) work flawlessly once they have been set up. The connection to the WAN (RoadRunner) needs resetting several times a week. I suspect this router does not recover well after some particular type of network glitch. To reset it, I go to the status page, release IP address and then renew IP address, and connectivity returns. I did not have to do this with my previous D-Link router.

"Fast and Easy", This router replaced a Linksys 802.11g router I have had for at least 2 years. I have always been happy with Linksys, so I decided to give this one a try.

Setup was quick and easy. It has a nice low profile on my desk and I really like the easy setup button it has for syncing other products with it.

I've had it pugged in for about 8 hours now and I am not experiencing the heat problems other people have. I don't have anything underneath it and the sides are clear so that might be an issue with others, I don't know. I also have a glass desk that it sits on so maybe that helps more than wood - I have no idea, but I can tell you that I am not experiencing any heat issues.

My setup is using all four ports at once as well as 4 wireless connections. So far I am really happy. First day and all, who knows what the future brings - but it does hook up quick and the quality seems great. I was using a slingbox over 802.11g before - now with this router and an 802.11n bridge (game adapter), I see a great improvement over the 'g'.

"So so product from Linksys", Got the router last week, easily set it up with either cable and DSL modem (I have both services). Wired connection worked right away. My gigabit NAS is getting write speed >100Mbps.

The problem is setting up the wireless connection. Initially tried both WEP and WPA2 encryption (my old setting). All four computers had trouble connecting: either no connection or showing connected but ping request did not work. I had to called CS numerous times. In one case a lady charged me $9.99 to work remotely and somehow get it going which later only lasted for a night and then everything went crazy like before again. In another call, a guy changed nearly all parameters in Advance Wirelss Settings from default to some strange numbers and got it going again. This time it was stable for awhile. The problem is unstable connection: my laptop (with Intel Wireless-n card) was 3ft away but connected at 5.5Mbps. Asked CS if they could diagnosis whether the product is defective. Nobody could do it. Now I have returned the item.

Other observation:
1) Heat does not seem to be big problem
2) Do not try to upgrade the firmware from factory 1.0.04 to 1.0.06 (Linksys website). Otherwise the encryption choice box between TKIP and AES for WPA personal and WPA enterprise will be goine. Then you are stuck with default TKIP mode which limits wireless speed to <56Mbps.
3) No true connected device table but only DHCP client table. So if you rstatic IP devices are configured on device side, you will not see it anywhere in WRT310 software interface. I ended up changing all my devices (2 NAS and 1 print server) to be DHCP on device side then reserve IPs on WRT310N to make it work.
