"This wants to be your lover" I read a quote on "In Rainbows" that stated Radiohead had finally met expectations by reaching them. I can certainly echo this statement, and perhaps even stake the claim that this may well be Radiohead's best album. Certainly a huge claim, but "In Rainbows" is a wondrous album.
I will keep things short as many reviewers have picked apart and detailed individual songs and themes. So, most importantly for me, "In Rainbows" treads that impossibly difficult line of being mostly accessible yet surprisingly lasting. It simply does not tire. Months and months of sporadic listens and I still become totally involved and immersed, a feat that separates truly great albums from good ones. The overall sound of the album perfectly blends the sombre electronic tones of "Kid A" and "Amnesiac" with the guitar-driven rock of "Ok Computer" and "The Bends". It's satisfyingly experimental when need be, yet equally sparse and simplistic. It's cold and desolate at times, warm and genial at others. It is everything I can want from a Radiohead album. Beautiful, consistent, cutting-edge music.
"Every song is good" I'm not a big radiohead fan, but this album is great all the way through. I don't skip any tracks- not even "House of Cards" which I had already heard a bunch of times before I bought the cd. Normally, you hear one of the songs from an album too many times before you get the whole disc, and you're sick of that one. But I still don't skip it. My only complaint is that I wish the album were longer, but that's just because I like everything so much.
"Superb Album - 4 ½ Stars" I will be the first to readily admit that I slept on Radiohead's IN RAINBOWS throughout 2008. I originally had planned to buy the album online via Radiohead's infamous download offer (which of course worked adversely against them) but I missed the deadline. I then purchased IN RAINBOWS in the store conventionally, but I only listened to the first couple of tracks and sat it aside. It was one of those albums that I said 'I would eventually listen to and critique'. After putting it off for almost an entire year, the Grammy nominations reignited my interest in IN RAINBOWS, considering the gracious Album of the Year award. I will also be the first to say that I thought that an Album of the Year nomination was a bit lofty for this album, but after listening to it and analyzing it, I can sympathize with the Recording Academy's mindset and thinking. It is a fine album. Maybe not 2008's Album of the Year, but certainly a worthy contender by all means.
The album opens as mysterious as any Radiohead album, only this time with sick electronic programming (drums) that instantly catch the listener's attention. Indeed, opening ditty "15 Steps" is not only a great opener, but a personal favorite of mine from IN RAINBOWS. I mean, who else writes in 5/4 time conventionally? Yorke sounds as solid as he did on OK COMPUTER, a historical album. The guitar work complements both the drum programming and live drums. "Bodysnatchers" opts for a more 'indie-/garage-rock' sound than "15 Steps". The guitar work is heavy, though tasteful-enough allowing for Yorke's vocals to shine through the arrangement. It too is a great listen and the mixing job is superb. So far, Radiohead is batting 1000.
"Nude" is definitely in my top 3 of tracks from IN RAINBOWS. The synth-strings coupled with vocalized-synth sounds make it one of the most immaculate productions of IN RAINBOWS. Here, Yorke's vocals sound as sincere as they ever have. The chord progression as always is out there, one of Radiohead's most redeeming qualities. As a songwriter myself, it is difficult to exit from the restrains of I-IV-V chordal progressions - Radiohead has no problems in this arena as "Nude" and the rest of IN RAINBOWS proves true. "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi" continues and upward streak of solid tracks, though it is not my favorite by any means (solid nonetheless). "All I Need" is equally as strong as anything else, with a bass line that any pop/hip-hop/urban producer would kill to have. On "All I Need", the songwriting evolves as more electronic effects are added making for quite a stimulating listen. Top notch Radiohead by all means.
"Faust Arp" features one of the most intellectualized chordal progressions of IN RAINBOWS. Again, sounds run rampant and Yorke eats it up with his phenomenal vocals. Another contender in my top three for best track from IN RAINBOWS is most certain "Reckoner" with its top-notch songwriting, great guitar work, and multi-layered drums. Second only to "Nude" is this Yorke's greatest vocal performance. "House of Cards" provides another solid Radiohead performance, while "Jigsaw Falling Into Place" is another 5-star performance in my eyes. Radiohead ends on a high note with "Video Tape", even if it falls short of the very strongest of the album. Even saying that, "Video Tape" is 110% solid as well.
Essentially, Radiohead does not make a misstep on IN RAINBOWS, save for their 'downloading' fiasco, which my have prevented the album from going platinum (it went gold). But what is commercial success these days? If an album goes gold it has accomplished something with the current state of the recording industry and the totality of the economy itself. Radiohead have proven to me that they did have one of the best albums of 2008 and I nearly passed up a golden listening opportunity by my foolishness. 4 ½ Stars!!!
"Breathtaking" One of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard in my life and I don't say that lightly. These men are truly musicians in every sense of the word. Some songs have moved me to tears while others made me want to dance! Overall I highly recommend it!
"So Radiohead!" It's amazing how this band is capable to create such out of this word music! One of my life favorite bands!

What our customer's say!
"Radiohead returns with a top notch album which may be one of their finest", Radiohead proved in 2007 that they COULD give their music away and still make a profit. As the music business continued to melt down Radiohead released their latest album "In Rainbows" as an mp3 file where you could choose how much you paid and a physical album in early 2008 that still managed to outsell most of their competitors.
It's also one of their finest albums incorporating the experimental approach that they took with "Kid A" to "Hail to the Thief", the band added in a healthy dose of melody, riffs and elements of conventional songwriting.
From the opening track "15 Steps" to the concluding one "Videotape" the band takes a look backward and forward at the same time--using the skills that they honed on early albums such as "Palbo Honey", "The Bends" and "OK Computer" and meshing it with their sometimes not always successful experimental stuff.
Take a listen to the samples and decide for yourself if you like the album. I have to admit that with "Kid A" and "Amnesiac" they lost me but my interest was piqued again with "Hail to the Thief". Sometimes music is like shopping in a really big store--you know what you want to buy but you still want to try on other stuff just for fun. Sometimes you really find out what you want by doing that. That's what the previous albums were--trying stuff on for fun. With this album the band found out what they wanted and brought it home to their fans in a unique fashion.
4 1/2 stars.
"Disappointing, Insipid", I was anticipating this release from Radiohead, and maybe I expected too much. (except for the first two tunes which I don't particularly enjoy) This is insipid drivel. VERY disappointing.
"so good", Wow this is amazing music. This album has a warmer feel than very recent albums (Amnesiac, Hail to the Thief) and is very creative with a tight sound. It is certainly different than any other album by Radiohead. I am a huge fan of earlier works such as The Bends, OK Computer, and Kid A. I had especially felt like OK computer was unmatched in terms of beautiful sound and originality. In Rainbows has easily matched this rare quality and has renewed my excitement in Radiohead. Please disregard reviews that give a poor rating due to reasons like: "its slower music than I like", "my cd was scratched", "this is not the same Radiohead I remember", or "I'm giving up on Radiohead because this isn't 'OK Computer v2.0'". Those reviews mean nothing to the intuitiveness and quality of Radiohead and this production. Certainly if all you want in Radiohead is OK Computer, then you should not buy this. Some albums you initially love then a month later you could care less about it. Some, you may not even make it through the first time, but it slowly grows on you to a point where you can't get enough. In Rainbows is the best of both worlds... I liked it at first listen and the more I've listened to it over the last year, the more I love it and appreciate the amazing and ingenious sound.
Its outstanding and so far holds the #1 spot on my personal list for recent times.
"Radiohead finally gets BORING.", This isn't a bad album but the innovation is really gone. What was once a startlingly good and original band has seemed to have dried up and become boring. These songs just sound so lifeless. Inorganic. Removed. In Rainbows just doesn't seem to stand up with the rest of this band's amazing discography. I think the magic is (sadly) finally gone. They had a good run though!
"swept me off my feet after 10 listens", This album (if you are new to Radiohead's style at least) is an acquired taste. But when you do learn to like it, it's breathtaking.

"Beautiful Album", This is the best radiohead album in a while. Its not as depressing or as heavy as some others and it has a very nice flow to it. Its one of those albums that you don't like until after a few listens, but the more you listen the more you like it. I tend to put it on while I'm working, slap my earbuds in and just let it repeat.
I find it hard to list favorite songs because the have changed so many times since I purchased In Rainbows....but here goes. From the bonus cd, I love Up on the Ladder...it has a driving guitar and a nice drum that gets you tapping your toes. Faust Arp, Weird Fishes, and Videotape our some others that I seek out regularly...but the whole album is excellent. Rarely do I skip a track.
If you like radiohead and even if you don't, this is too good to pass up. Its just beautiful and well crafted. No cookie cutter songs here.
"C'mon...", Anyone who gave this less than 4 and a half stars is not doing it justice.
"...", What I think about In Rainbows is that Radiohead reinvented their style of music yet again, as they did in the transition between OK Computer and Kid A. At first, I was put off by it because it didn't give me the kind of....how can I say it....well, it's more of Radiohead reaching into themselves and experimenting then trying to reach out to the listener as they did so well in The Bends and OK Computer. But then I just looked at the technical how-to quality to it, and I just bean to appreciate the album as an experimental work, or another chapter in Radiohead's work (which is why I definitely don't think it's "non-essential"). Is it near the quality level of OK Computer or The Bends? No, but name me an album in the past 10 years that is.
"Waste of money", I purchased this CD right after the release...Needless to say, I was sooooo disappointed. The tracks dragged on and I think I have tried to listen to it in it's entirety twice but can't.
"Mostly great", Great compilation of songs. Some parts of the CD dragged on too much for me, but overall I enjoyed it!
