"Disappointing Platform for Guitar Hero/Rock Band Fans and Movie Watchers"
I can't begin to tell you how frustrating that this purchase has been for me. While the system is, strictly speaking, a PS3, I feel like Sony really stuck it to people like me who thought that they were buying a REAL PS3.

The biggest thing that drives me crazy is the LOUD fan noise - When we watch a movie, this thing sounds like someone left a hair drier on medium setting behind our TV. That's not an exaggeration. During quiet scenes, it's very distracting. Apparently the "real" PS3s don't have this noise.

It also has only two USB slots. You'd think for a Bluetooth system, you wouldn't need more than two so that you can charge your wireless remotes. But Rock Band came needing three USB slots. I know that that's not Sony's problem - but every other PS3 model has more than two USB slots.

It's not backward compatible. When the PS3s first came out, they said that they were all backward compatible. Turns out not so much. Not with the cheap version.

If you're getting a PS3, you'd better read the specs VERY carefully to know what you're getting. It's not just a difference in hard drive size!

"My Only Game Console Review"
I own a very small Playstation 2. It looks like the bigger one but smaller. I used to share it with my brother until he got an XBox 360 last year for Christmas then he gave the Playstation 2 to me. I have a couple questions. Does it play normal DVDs and PS2 and PS1 games? Please comment the review with the answers please. I was 11 in 5th grade when I heard adults were camping out at Best Buy so when they opened they would get the PS3 or the Wii. A couple of my friends asked me what would I rather have. I chose the PS3. I recomend this for all game console fans and Playstation fans. Just be careful when opening it up and putting it together. So Playstation 2 fan Casimus Prime signing off.

"Excellent Entertainment Hardware"
I've always been a Playstation fan but I've mostly been a PC gamer until recently. I choose the PS3 over the XBOX360 because of the Blu-ray player and I'm glad I did.

The system is so much more than just a gaming machine. It's an entertainment machine. I love the ability to set up my home PC as a media server and stream video and pictures through the PS3. I love the Playstation Network. Being able to download and play game demos is a real plus.

I also feel the PS3 is more forward looking. Within the next couple years as games become larger the XBOX360 will be held back by standard DVD capacity. The PS3 will not suffer from this due to the much larger capacity of the blu-ray disc.

"Why the PS3 w/Blu-ray should be you HD Home Theater Player!! (explained)"
This review is only for the HDMI Blu-ray Player application for your HD 1080p Home Theater.

First of all the PS3 introduced Blu-ray quickly and cheaply to the masses. Probably helping Sony's Blu-ray win the HD player format wars.

Why is Blu-ray so awesome and a must have? Simply 25 - 50 g vs DVD's 5 - 10 g of info per disc. 1080p (w/HDMI cables (sold seperately) and HDTV) vs 480p. Finally, the cost of a Blu-ray player only is $399. The PS3 Comes with Blu-ray Player (play regular DVDs with upstreaming capabilty), 1080p playstation game console (you must buy the optional HDMI cable), plays CD's and accessible to the internet for just $399 wow.

My Qualifying Statement: My HD Home Theater weighs in at about $2000, plus movies. The break down; a Mitsubishi Projector (HC-1500 up to 1080p with HDMI Blu-ray) $800 (orig $1495), a Sony 5.1 Sound System (HT-SS2300) 3 HDMI inputs/1 HDMI output $399 (orig $499) and a Sony PLAYSTATION 3 (w/Blu-ray player included) $399 (orig $499). Sony High Speed HDMI cables $160 and HD Screen Paint & kit $180 for my 108" viewing wall screen. With this 1080p system I've created a HD HDMI 5.1 Home Theater presentation sight and sound equal to an IMAX (on a smaller scale) experience.

Simply I will explain only the Blu-ray HDMI Audio and Display Set-Up.

PS3 Main Menu Screen - pan (NOTE: PAN IS SAME AS ARROW)left to SETTINGS - pan down to DISPLAY STATUS depress enter button - VIDEO OUTPUT SETTINGS depress enter button - SELECT HDMI pan right - SELECT CUSTOM pan right - CHECK 480p / 720p /1080i /1080p depress X - SELECT FINISH depress X. Return to SETTINGS - pan down to SOUND SETTINGS depress enter button - - AUDIO OUTPUT SETTINGS depress enter button - Select HDMI pan right - SELECT MANUAL pan right - CHECK DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 CH1 / DTS 5.1 ch / PCM 5.1 ch44 and all other appropiate and defaults needed. to support.

Support PS3 accessories are; Sony High Speed HDMI Audio/Video Cables (suggested DLC-HD20T a 6' triple sheilded cable $50 NOTE: length is determined by your Home Theater requirements. Mine was 3 x 6') and a PS3 Blu-ray Disc Remote Control (much more natural to use than the supplied game controller).

Bottomline: The PS3 HDMI w/Blu-ray player is the obvious economical and versatile choice for your HD Home Theater. Sony is the originator of Blu-ray so their product is proven to perform beautifully !!! And it does. Oh I forgot to mention it also supports BlueTooth technology. Meaning for one the remote works anywhere. Enjoy this masterpeice.

"Game Play Good. Graphics & Blu-Ray Movies AWESOME!"
I'm not a gamer, so I'm not going to critique this on it's gameplay. But, the graphics on an HD TV from the Blu-Ray movie player are UNBELIEVABLE! It sets the standard for home theater. Period.

What our customer's say!

"Not just a gaming console!", I bought the PS3 as a Blu-ray player for my HDTV. $400 seemed to be the base price if you were getting a PS3 or virtually any other player out there. Picture quality is excellent, very easy to use. Combine with the Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Disc Remote and you have a family friendly player.

Nice added features:

1. Jukebox - You can either stream music from your Windows XP/Vista machine as a media player, or transfer files to the local hard drive (I used a flash drive) and play them in a variety of ways. The PS3 even puts up 1 of 3 different screen savers while playing. In addition you can play MP4 (& now DIVX) video files and picture slideshows.

2. PS3 Store - Using my home wireless network, I am able to access the Sony Playstation Store. On the store, I can purchase and download games and game demos, AND recently purchase/download full length TV episodes and movies. Unlike my DVR with movie download functionality, I can start playing the video after only 1% is downloaded. Like that other DVR, the video is only good for 24hrs after I started watching it.

Negatives:
My biggest complaint is the games. This 40gb model does not play ANY of the PS2 games (like the now equally priced 80gb does). Of the games that are out there, only about 10 are kid oriented. My 6yo isn't really interested in playing sports games, and FPS are out of the question. Looks like a Wii is in our future.

Secondly, while I love the BlueTooth remote, it puts a crimp in using something like the Logitech Harmony remote.

"Candidate for storage upgrade but better options are available", Necessary disclosure: I do not own this model but do I own the 60GB model, recently upgraded to 320MB. I am also very familiar with the latest 80GB model (which is basically this one with a larger disk) because one of my neighbors has one and I am the neighborhood's unofficial and unpaid 'computer' consultant :). I also did some research in anticipation of us purchasing a second unit because I promised the kids 'their own' if their grades were going to meet a certain standard.

As compared to the 60GB model (see this model's pluses and minuses and what all PS3s have in common):

STORAGE and STORAGE UPGRADE:
----------------------------
This model comes with an 40GB drive. As crazy as this may sound, this is a pretty good buy IF you are planning to upgrade your storage. On the other hand, DO NOT buy this model if you do not consider upgrading the disk because 40GB won't take you very far. To give you an idea of the amount of storage you may need on your PS3, I recently checked the status of my 320GB disk and I found that I had 198GB free. That means that, less than one year after urchasing my (then) 60GB box I was using 122GB already. The space is taken by family pictures, a little music, lots of demos, many 'disk' games that to dump gigabytes of data to the disk to improve performance, many videos the kids are making with the 'Eye' camera, game saves. I suspect that 'Home', when it becomes available, may require a few more GB's for its own use so 320GB may be what you need if you don't want to constantly worry about managing your disk.

An extra [...] would buy you a 320GB drive. I used the Western Digital WD3200BEVT 320 GB Scorpio Sata 5400 Rpm 8MB 2.5 inch myself. 1TB drives are available these days for a few $$ more and you should try to get one of those if you are planning to store lots of videos. The nice thing about upgrading your disk is that you are also going to be left with a perfectly good 40GB drive which you can place into a cheap enclosure, and the StarTech AT2510U2 InfoSafe 2.5-Inch USB/SATA Hard Drive Enclosure worked for me. I'd be using the 40GB drive as a backup device for family photos. Digital, of course.

Upgrading the disk is (relatively) easy and you can find a lot of advice if you Google for it. Try first Googling "PlayStation 3 Hard Drive Upgrade (HOWTO)" for a nice video so you'll decide if you are comfortable. If upgrading is the first thing you do, everything becomes very easy because you need not worry about backups or restores. I upgraded my box in a couple of hours WITH the backup/restore steps.

MEMORY CARD INTERFACES:
-----------------------
The lack of memory card interfaces is annoying but you can get around it. Copy your stuff to a USB drive or flash drive and... problem solved. You can then upload your things through the USB. It's somewhat inconvenient but it's no big deal.

USB PORTS:
----------
My old 60GB model has 4 USB ports and I am using all of them. One for the PS3 Eye (camera), a second has a wireless keyboard dongle, the third is where the racing wheel plugs in and the last one I use to charge controllers. Of course, you can and you WILL be able to live with 2 slots but it is likely that you will be doing some plugging/unplugging if you begin adding peripherals. One way around it is to get a USB port multiplexer. Another solution is seek Blue-tooth peripherals (wireless) if you can find them. Blue-tooth keyboards, for example, are available.

PS2 COMPATIBILITY:
------------------
This model does not support PS2 software. Since the original PS2-compatible PS3's are hard to get, this has to be accepted as reality. I assume that Sony, after polling existing and future PS3 users, found that most users don't need PS2 compatibility. Soon after we upgraded to a PS3 my kids were playing Kingdom Hearts and Destroy All Humans but I haven't seen them doing so in quite a while. It is nice to have PS2 compatibility but its lacking would not stop me from buying a PS3.

PSOne GAMES:
------------
The PS3 has full PSOne compatilibity. Lots of them are available for download at the PSN store. They are quite inexpensive and some of them are still fun to play.

SUMMARY:
--------
- Buy this model if you consider upgrading to larger storage and, for whatever reason, you do not want the 40GB MSG4 bundle that comes with a DualShock controller.
- If you feel that you can live with 160GB AND then wait for a few more weeks for the 160GB bundle and you won't have to upgrade your storage.
- Get yourself a USB port multiplexer if you need more than 2 ports.
- Transfer your photos to flash drives to get around the missing memory card interfaces.
- Keep your PS2 if you have one and still wish to play PS2 games in the future.

"Go with the 80GB", This is a good product but the 80Gb Metal Gear Solid 4 Package is the
way to go if you want to play your old PS2 games and have lots of room
for storage

"The best blu-ray player and oh yeah it plays games too", The concensus is that this is the way to go when you decide to upgrade to blu-ray DVD's. Many people don't even bother playing games with it.

"PS3", This system is a great system and I am a huge movie buff so watching them in blueray is ten times better. Blueray players themselves are [...] so might as well buy a Playstation 3.

"I love PS3!", Great price for a console that completely pwns the 360. It supports true 1080p HD (even though my tv is only 1080i...) and the 360 doesn't... Blu-Ray, a cell processor... basically everything graphical that a 360 has... plus better physics, bigger worlds, more realistic AI, more dynamic gameplay, uncompressed textures, etc, etc...

Americans just don't seem to understand this concept. "They have the same graphics, so the PS3 must be a ripoff!" Absolutely wrong. If you know a thing or two about computers you'd know that the 360 was actually the ripoff. Red ring of death, overheating issues, DVD-only support (without add-ons), etc. "Well there are better games for the 360!" Sure, if all you want to play are first person shooters. Gears of War, Halo, Battlefront, BioShock, Call of Duty, FEAR, etc... all the most common games on 360 and are FPS's... with no other gameplay element (except in the case of BioShock, which is also available for the PS3 and runs at a higher frames per second).

For me, the choice is clear.

"Excellent, nothing short of excellent. The future of gaming", Playstation 3 is the next step in entertainment. I love the option of blu ray hi-def and wireless connectivity. Playstation 3 has begun to prove itself as the best complete gaming system.

"Video Game System", As everyone knows, this was a hard system to get. We attempted to purchase this same system from an online aution and ended up having to get a refund. We decided to go with a dependable source. We love shopping with Amazon and I recommend this sight to everyone I talk to. I am always bragging about the deals I find. Thanks again.

Sincerely,
A very happy customer!!!!

"2 for 1: plays blu-ray DVDs and games", i bought this for my husband's bday. it's obviously for playing games, but it's a great deal because it's the top of the line player for blu-ray dvds. so if you're going to invest the money into buying a blu-ray player, you might as well buy this. it costs about the same but you can play games on it too. would recommend buying a remote though, you can use the controller, but it's a bit cumbersome. buy the remote and you're set.

"AWSOME", The PS3 is awsome. No other word describes it. The browser for the internet lacks the ability to play FLASH video online unless it is youtube.com which uses an older flash format. The game play is great and it also plays blue-ray DVD, yet costs less than a blue-ray player. You just can't get a better deal. Came quickly from Amazon also.....to sum it up....WOW!
