"Sleeper Hit of 2008"
I won't elaborate on plot and gameplay since others have done so. If you are a fan of the survival horror genre, you know what to expect, and this game delivers!

Excellent graphics, sound effects and voice acting. This is one of the best EA games that I can remember in recent past.

IMHO this one is worth full-price and is a bargain at any price under $60.

"The Survival Horror Event of the Year."
I'll start by saying I'm not usually a fan of alien-space-future-themed games. But, as I'm a huge survival horror fan, I decided to check this one out. I'm glad I did.

The story is, I suppose, simple enough. You are Isaac Clarke, an engineer, who is sent on a repair mission with a few others. You have an especially strong interest in this mission, because your girlfriend (assumed), Nicole, is onboard the ship. You and your comrades arrive near your mission site, the USG Ishimura, an extremely large mining ship, and discover a complete communications blackout. Strange. The botched docking in the Ishimura is only a sign of things to come, as the ship seems to be completely deserted on first glance. Isaac + co. find out very quickly, however, that it's not. The simple repair mission then turns into a bloody, limb-severing fight for survival.

The graphics are nothing short of gorgeous. I can say that this game is truly meant to be played on a widescreen 1080p television-- fear not, the game still looks stunning even on a normal TV. Everything from the bloodstained environment to the horrifying necromorphs (usually grotesque tentacled creatures) to the texture on Isaac's suit is presented in crisp, clean detail. However, one major fault remains. If you aren't playing this on an HDTV, you'll have problem reading most of the text logs that are scattered throughout. Maybe I didn't fiddle with my video settings enough, but that's something that is completely unacceptable.

The game is a blast to play. At first the controls feel a tiny bit awkward, but then they soon become second nature and even intuitive. Your main method of combat is dismembering limbs. Awesome. Eventually you will come upon stores, with which you can buy new weapons and then upgrade them. This sort of thing feels silly and out of place (to me) in a survival horror game and makes your fight for survival feel a whole lot less desperate. Also, the extra guns are only mildly interesting at best-- and the game can easily be completed with exclusive use of the first gun.

That being said, this game's plenty terrifying in its own right. It's got plenty of jump scares (I haven't jumped at a game in years!) and the off-camera sounds of agonized screams and aliens crawling around in pipes will have your fingers resting on the trigger buttons-- just in case.

It's a great game, but it does have some flaws. The previously mentioned graphical issue, along with out-of-placeness of the store making this not a true survival-horror game. Also, the missions you'll be sent on will mostly be "Isaac, fetch this so you can fix this, but first you'll have to unlock this door and get these items." It's a little grating on your nerves when every mission (practically) is a go-fetch mission, and you'll find yourself yelling at the screen at your lazy comrades who make you, an engineer, a man with little-to-no combat experience, do everything on his own.

Great game. If you're a fan of gory, alien action limb-severing goodness, this game is a must buy. It's also a must for anyone who's a fan of Resident Evil 4 and any game like it.

"Eerie and exciting, great game!"
Dead Space is an incredible game filled with terror and intrigue around every corner. I do not regret for a second buying this game, it's right up my alley.
I've always liked the fear effect that can come from games. I still remember brief moments in Gears of War(the old factory scene) and Dino Crisis that actually caused my heart to skip a few beats. After reading a little bit on Dead Space, I decided this one might deliver a few scary moments. I'll only play it with headphones on in a dark room, it adds to the terror immensely!

The sounds and noises you hear along the way create a very disturbing mood, but one that fits the game perfectly. With the sound turned down, I can only imagine the game being a lot more 'tame'.
The creatures you encounter are very eerie in the manner that they move through the levels, especially when one can still lunge at you after you've, say, severed its legs off.
The storyline is a lot of fun to follow along to as well. An interesting and intriguing background on what happened to the ship keeps you moving through the narrow hallways and dark rooms with panicked curiosity.
And lastly the new and altered extra's in the game force you to apply a whole different style of thought process to your environment. Rooms with zero-gravity let you leap from floor to ceiling effortlessly, a limited but NECESSARY stasis module let's you slow down anything that moves too quick for you, and kinesis allows you to move obstructions with ease, or even throw objects at attacking creatures.

Anyone who loves a game with horror elements mustn't miss Dead Space. It delivers with an eerie presentation full of terrifying attacks, disturbing noises, and creepy areas and settings. Just remember: always be watching your back, because you can bet something else in the shadows is too.

"Resident Evil 4 in Space"
A simplification but a high compliment at the same time, Dead Space indeed does play similarly to Resident Evil 4 right down to the over-the-shoulder camera angle, alien organisms using and modifying human bodies, and purchasing upgrades and replenishing ammo and equipment via a vendor.

That being said, Dead Space stands alone just fine and a science fiction survival adventure. I purchased an Xbox 360 only a few weeks ago (having owned a PS3 for over a year) and this is the first game that I took to right away and played to completion.

You play a very tough character equipped with a RIG (body armor/spacesuit) and various powerful and destructive tool-weapons with which to dispense various alien monsters. The enemies aren't usually overwhelming. You can maintain steady progress by balancing the use of your weapons and special abilities: kinetic force (telekinesis) and time stasis. I felt the balance of challenge and progression was just right for me on normal difficulty.

Solid gameplay aside, there are some excellent realistic science fiction elements. The game takes place on an enormous mining vessel (like the BBC show Red Dwarf). There are different points when you need to accomplish specific tasks like: restarting the engines and gravity generators, jumping around in zero-G, and untethering a large asteroid. These are all a big bonus to the avid sci-fi reader.

Overall the game has quite a bit going for the player: gameplay, setting, cinematics, sound, and graphics and I recommend it.

"Not for the faint of heart"
The only the reason this game isn't five stars is because it doesn't have multiplayer.

Graphics (Excellent): The graphics are vibrant and top notch. This game is definitely rated M for mature. You will see blood, mutilation and futuristic weapons plus tech. All of which looks as smooth as a high class horror movie.

Game Play (Excellent): I would describe the game play as a mixture of frantic and tense. The controls respond well and do exactly what you want. Which most of the time involves dismembering mutated scary creatures in to smaller pieces. Side note the game is played from a 3rd person perspective.

Story (Excellent): The game is basically a sci-fi horror movie except it's one of the rare good ones. You're an engineer on a space ship on a routine repair mission for a massive mining ship that has mysteriously lost all communications. Except for a brief tele communication from your ex girlfriend. Needles to say things get hectic fast and the pace keeps moving.

Sound(Excellent): The sounds are a blend of well crafted scary music and creepy screams of the dead and dying.

Final note: High quality all around gaming in dead space definitely a solid purchase. Only loses points for not having multiplayer.

What our customer's say!

"Best game of 08", Its all been said before but Dead Space is just an amazing experience that seemed to come out of nowhere. I'm not a fan of EA by any means but they really hit this one out of the park. A rare combination of great action and even better atmosphere, delivering genuine chills from start to finish.

A+

"Hell of a ride!", Dead Space begins when a massive mining ship, the USG Ishimura, comes in contact with a mysterious alien artifact and suddenly loses its communications Engineer Isaac Clarke is sent to repair the Ishimura's communications, but arrives to find a floating vessel that has become a complete bloodbath. The crew is mutilated and infected with an ancient alien scourge. Clarke's repair mission is transformed to one of survival as he fights to save himself and return the artifact to the planet at any cost.

Here EA delivers an incredibly frightening experience with fantastic graphics and effects, an audio system that will have you jumping out of your seat, and a truly horrific atmosphere that is permeated with death, mutilation, and despair. You'll have to be resilient to slash through the alien onslaught and stop this virulent scourge. As you explore the ship, the tragic story of the USG Ishimura will unfold in gory detail as you discover frantic logs from the hideously transformed crew in their final days.

The alien hordes are incredibly resilient. You'll have to find creative ways to neutralize the attacking enemies by shearing off limbs with powerful weapons. And when the ammo runs out you'll be thankful that you can use your telekinetic powers to pick up objects (even the aliens' own severed arms and legs) and hurl them at your advancing enemies. A new mode called Zero-G also makes an appearance. You can use zero gravity to create your own path around obstacles by walking on walls and the ceiling. Leap across vast distances or change your perspective to gain a strategic advantage over your enemies.

Developed as a single-player game, Dead Space delivers the chilling, claustrophobic feeling of being isolated in a dark environment all the while being stalked by some truly horrific enemies. A game that makes it's own rules bringing the true meaning of being weaponless, alone and terrified.

"Great survival horror game", I was amazed by the work EA has done with Dead Space, which stands in stark contrast to much of their other games. This is a great survival horror game and if you like the genre you'll love it. It had a cinematic flair that reminded me of Scifi Horror movies like Alien and the menus were very immersive. That said, it isn't the longest game but still very enjoyable.

"Best experience of 2008", I think I've been waiting for Dead Space for a few years...

Yes, I've played every other awesome game this year. I'm a diehard Gears of War fan and I loved GOW2, but I have to truly say that Dead Space captured my imagination, heart and soul.

The level design is awesome, gameplay is captivating and the design choices awarded by the loss of gravity or the absence of oxygen (read, vacuum) make the game soo fun.

If you haven't tried it, please do, you will NOT be disappointed.

"The Next Generation of Horror Games", When I first got this game (actually my brother did), it was the title that hooked me into the story. You play the role of a ship maintenance worker that stumbles across the stranded "Ishamura", and you and your team must find out what has happened to, or rather killed the crew. After following through the lengthy story (the length a real video game should be...) and taking out several "bosses", this turns out to be a great game hands down, and if you are a die hard horror game fan somewhat like myself or you greatly enjoyed Gears of War, Resident Evil, and the others, you will love this story that keeps you on edge every minute with great graphics that realistically imitate the inside of a space cruiser. I highly recommend this game.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"resident evil goes to the moon", If you liked Resident Evil 4, give Dead Space a turn because it's exactly the same as that legendary series. You're pretty much a lone nerd on a doomed spaceship who's expected to save the day. Hordes of vicious and disgusting aliens rush from every conceivable place, and your job is to cut 'em up into squishy chunks. You're constantly at a loss for ammo while being put in tight situations, much like Resident did.
DS is a great game. The designers used vacuum and zero gravity in clever ways. Once I tried to use my flame thrower in vacuum only to find it didn't work. I forget that no oxygen means no fire - nice touch. Also, when in vacuum, there is no sound. All you can hear is the sound of your breathing as you cut aliens to ribbons. And the graphics rock.
Dead Space is awesome, but it's not a game I'd buy. I rented it and rushed through it. There's no online part, no dlc, no multiplaer. It's a closed game, and a short one. Don't buy it for $59.99 but definitely check it out.

"MURPHY'S LAW: THE VIDEO GAME", "If anything can go wrong, it will." -- Murphy's Law

So does that mean that this game is a total disaster? A total mess? No, but I will show below how that saying applies.

WHAT WENT WRONG:
For me, the biggest problem with Dead Space is the story. While the gameplay is mostly rock-solid, the plot is full of uninteresting characters and ridiculous mission assignments.

For one, your main character doesn't even speak the whole 12-14 hours of gameplay. It's pretty sad when even the monsters you are fighting are more vocal than you are.

Then there's Nicole. Supposedly my goal is to find her and save her blah blah blah. But with such poor character development I really didn't care if she lived or not--or any of the other NPC's for that matter.

When it comes down to it, almost all games have you do some sort of fetch quest. Go and fetch the golden flute, find the key, get the power module, etc. Role-Playing Games (RPGs) are abundant in fetch quests, but, when done well, go unnoticed because you are also interacting with other colorful characters and getting wrapped up in the story.

We've already established that the character development is lacking, which makes the fact that every single mission is the equivalent of "Fido, Fetch!" all too apparent.

You're on this huge spaceship and every possible subsystem that can be broken, is. The asteroid-defense lasers, the oxygen content, multiple doors and control stations, the shuttle and so on. You have a few comrades-in-arms that keep in touch with you via a spiffy Heads Up Display (HUD), but often (if not all) the time they are staying put in their safe little control room while you're doing all the dirty work.

For once I would have liked to see some different mission assignments, like "Hold this position for X amount of time until help arrives." or be the guy in the control room for once helping someone else get through the ship by opening the right doors at the right time.

As for bugs/glitches, I found two: The first one I was in a moving elevator and backed up against the wall and somehow fell THROUGH the elevator floor all the way down to the bottom of the shaft and couldn't get out.
The second glitch I found was on the last chapter where the entire side of one building had become transparent, exposing the outside of the level.
While the first bug hampered gameplay and required loading a prior save, the second did not.

WHAT WENT RIGHT:

For all that went wrong, there is a LOT that went right with DEAD SPACE. If you were to ask me how to sum up the game in 4 words it would be this:

DOOM 3 Done Right

The gameplay (except for those two bugs mentioned above) is pretty solid. Saved games are reliable (unlike FARCRY 2), weapons function as advertised, inventory screens are clean (although text can be small on non-HDTV's) and the controls are pretty good.

There is a nice variety in enemies to kill: from fast to slow, from small to behemoth, from short-range attackers to stationary long-range attackers. And all of them have the ability to make you sit on the edge of your seat if you turn the corner at the wrong moment or forget to have your weapon drawn when exiting the elevators.

The weapon selection is nice, although I personally only used the Plasma Cutter/ Line Cutter/ Pulse Rifle/ Force Cannon combo for the whole game. I recommend 2-3 fast-firing weapons and 1 or 2 weapons with super-powerful secondary fire modes (Line Cutter/ Force Cannon).
What's even nicer is the fact that you can upgrade your weapons to make them deal more damage, hold more ammo, increase speed, or reduce reloading times.

Best of all is the realism. For once Outer Space is actually SILENT. Another realistic touch is how this mining ship has mining tools as weapons. The only real weapons I can recall with non-mining applications are the flamethrower and the pulse rifle.
The walls are smeared with blood and alien markings. There are also ads and portraits of past commanders of this once-great spaceship.

Is the game scary? Not as scary as F.E.A.R., in my opinion, but you'll definitely jump a few times (mostly towards the beginning of the game when you don't know what to expect). This game does create a very believable spaceship-in-outer-space atmosphere.

I don't usually play the Survival-Horror genre so hopefully that puts some perspective on how good this game is.

Happy hunting and watch your back!

"fun for the firsr few levels", The game is ok, it starts out fun and makes u jump a little but after the first few levels you just keep doing the same thing. At each level you start at one spot and have to go to the next spot while killing monsters, thats the game.

"BRILLIANTLY SCARY!", I love that this game scares me when I am about to move into the next room! I am a huge fan of the survival horror genre and this is the best I've played....ever! I was a very much into the Resident Evil series. I thought Resident Evil 4 was the best of the bunch and I give this a slight nod over RE 4. The graphics are amazing. The sound is amazing. This game is easy to pick up and start going. The controls make perfect sense. A very satisfying game experience. It took me a couple of weeks, several hours at a time to finish.

I mostly play games on the easiest level because I like to see the whole game. Trust me, even on easy, this is a fun, attainable challenge. The best part is the fact that you can run sparse on necessities but, give it time, around the corner will be exactly what you need.

My recommednation: scavenge as much as you can, sell it, and upgrade your weapons by buying power nodes as fast as possible. You must enter the last level with a couple of weapons upgraded to the max or at least nearly maxed out. I picked a couple of weapons early in the game as my two main weapons and the used two more as backups and did n't really upgrade them. Oh yeah, upgrade your rig.

You will not be disappointed! Please let there be a DEAD SPACE 2! Please!

"What was that sound? ... oh it was just the game screwing with me ...", Simply put, Dead Space is frighteningly fantastic! I haven't been this tweaked by a horror game since Doom 3 for the Xbox and F.E.A.R. You literally never know when or where something is going to come at you! Sometimes the game would even throw random sounds (like a large metal pipe hitting the ground and clattering around somewhere in the dark distance) just to mess with you! I would be creeping around completely paranoid cause i heard a sound and there would be nothing .... NOTHING! ... then as soon as i start to relax ... a "quarantine" or something similar would go into effect, the room would lock down and i would be set upon by a swarm of enemies of same or varying types! O.K. enough of my general exuberations :P ... on to the facts:

Pros:
-Environment: the levels were largely unique and you even revisited the same ones on different missions. This fact matters little, however, due to the fact that even revisited levels would sometimes be "changed" in some way as well as throw newer or different enemies at you than the first time you ventured through. I don't think there was a single moment in the entire game that i felt "safe" or "secure". The permanently set "creepy ambience" was integrated into the game wonderfully! I've never looked over my shoulder so many times in a game and been so paraniod about every corner and shadow :P.

-Enemy design: I'll admit that while the enemies did not have a plethora of variation, they were varied enough to keep it more than interesting the entire play through. I feel that there were just enough different enemies to keep you on your toes. Meaning, when you encountered a foe, because there weren't a WHOLE lot of different ones, you had just enough time to evaluate the TYPE of enemy it was and determine how to engage it without too much deliberation. Therefore strategy played a part in your combat experience but it did not dominated it, giving you a "fight by the seat of your pants" feeling.

-Combat: As a person that primarily plays First-person-shooters, adapting to the 3rd person (Metal Gear Solid) type of gameplay took a little getting used to. However, once I got the hang of it, i must say i like it just as much as an FPS style game. The controls are simple and easy to use as far as aiming, shooting, melee, and switching weapons is involved. Even if an enemy does get the best of you, you can usually button spam to get them off and lay down the hurt on them for crossing your path. Collision detection was phenominal(!) both in normal gravity and ZeroG. Dead enemies and objects reacted in a realistic way when kicked or thrown. Even live enemies knocked aside their dead comrades as they charged forward to rend your head from your body; which in some cases where the lighting was bad, could be enough warning to help you spot some of the smaller aliens. The weapons were interesting as well. Most of them had a slicing or cutting type of fire, and they all had a secondary firing mode. My personal favorite was the pistol type plasma cutter (first gun you get in the game) and the assault rifle which would hold a 200 round clip when upgraded (very good for those long fights with lots of enemies .. who needs to reload?). And while you found a decent amount of ammo laying around and could buy additional supplies from the "Store", it was very possible to run out of ammo while trying to make it from one cache to the next. I came close several times but never actually depleted my supply. And i'm a "conservative shooter" lol. The fact that your ammo takes up inventory slots that you have a limited number of makes it all that more challenging. (Tip: upgrade your suit as fast as you can :P) Those inventory slots are like plutonium to Stewie Griffin ... the more you have the more destruction you can rain down upon your enemies :P.

-Controls: i mentioned it a little bit in the "combat" section but as far as controls go; they take some getting used to at first, but once you do it feels pretty seamless. I was actually pretty intimidated when i entered a ZeroG room for the first time. Not only did it mean i was going to be able to go ANYWHERE in the room but also that the ENEMIES could come from anywhere also :P. I also thought it would be hard to maneuver in ZeroG, but it was as simple as "point and click". It was just as easy to stand on the ceiling and blast the baddies as it was on solid ground. And i'm not sure if it applies but i'm gonna put it in this section anyway. No HUD! Zero. Nada. None. Your health is located on the spinal part of your suit, your ammo counter pops up for the amount remaining in the current ammo clip for whatever weapon you have equipped when you AIM with it, and as far as your inventory goes, you can move around while you're sorting through things and it follows where your character is LOOKING, it doesn't just come up flat on the screen, it turns with you! Overall, it's a very smooth, very sleek and very tight configuration of data. Once you get familiar with what each type of ammo looks like it only takes a quick glance at your inventory screen to see if u should switch weapons soon or fire away blindly into the hordes of corpse-spawned enemies. One quick, final note i have on controls is that i like the fact you can run in pretty much any direction, strafing and moving backward included. It definitely helps keep u mobile while keeping your enemies in your sights.

-Story: You might think a scary game wouldn't have too much of a back story to it. Just throw some poor helpless fools into a scary/creepy environment; spawn some demonic/alien/mutated baddies; and let the screaming, flesh-rending, horror commence. Well while it DOES have all that, Dead Space also has a pretty decent storyline. I'm not going to spoil it for anyone, but I will say that things defintely aren't what they seem (cliche i know but it fits :P). In addition, there were at least THREE times i thought the game was over (or about to be over), when instead some random twist of fate threw me right back into the mix! Keep in mind i'm not complaining in the least ... but i will say when i DID actually finish the game it FELT like an accomplishment :P.

Cons:
-Boss Fights: The boss fights for the most part were straightforward and simplistic ... save one. And while it kept the game going with minimal frustration, i feel as though they could have made them SLIGHTLY more complex without hindering progression. Other than the lack of strategy to boss fights though, they were big and epic feeling for the most part. ^_^

-Space Ship Gun minigame: At two different points in the game you will take command of an anti-asteroid laser defense system. The first of which you are actually defending the ship against incoming asteroids. This event was by far the single worst part of the entire game. The aiming controls and actual targeting were simply atrocious. When i first sat down at the controls and the viewport openned to the vastness of space and i looked at the enormous rounds of ammo on either side of the double barrel monstrosity that was an anti-asteroid cannon; all i could think was .... "Hurry up and throw some rocks at me!!! I'ma gonna blast the HECK out of em!" ... after three failed attempts and scraping by with only 5% hull integrity the final time all i could think was .... "OMG i hope i never have to shoot that thing again!" While i DID have to shoot it again the second time was not NEARLY as painful. But overall this event was a relatively small stain on the stylish Armani sweater that is Dead Space.

Final comments:
Something i didn't mention was the vacuum events. The muffled sounds of your weapon discharging and the faint, almost non-existent wails of your alien pray as you sliced your way through their attacks in the cold vacuum of space, felt so real it made me want to hold MY breath lol.

Overal this game gets a big 5 out of 5 stars. Now if you'll excuse me i'm going to play through again with all the unlocks and continue to upgrade my arsenal :P.
