"Nice product but retail price is not $397 -- its $299 (according to Netgear)", I've got several Netgear products all of which have been high quality and generally true to their specs / marketing.

One note I wanted to share as I considered this was the list price is not $397 but $299 ...

"These things are bulletproof", We have several of these and several of the $65 netgear firewalls, but those cheaper firewalls keep locking up. These are pricey, but they seem to take anything.

"Nice router", I replaced a Cisco 802 with this bugger, performance seriously abused the Cisco. The install/setup was quick and easy and having the fail-over/load balancing option is nice.

"Backup data line with two DSL", Allows load balancing over two DSL's and using for Redundant data. In our location we can only get 768k up. Combining two gets us enough bandwidth to be usable. We don't get the full 1.5 up... but helps prevent a bandwidth hog from killing email delivery.

"Great Device -- Lots of bugs", It is true that this device is very easy to setup and works well.
However be aware that the latest firmware is riddled with bugs, especially in the area of remote syslog and vpn administration.
If your buying this unit to do site to site vpn you might consider looking at the SonicWall TZ 190 too.

Although this unit has a CLI, it is very limited, you will need to do most of your setup programming via the http interface.
This device replaced a Cisco Pix 506 --- in side by side tests the throughput on the Netgear blew the Cisco out of the water. Also, if your trying to connect several airport extreme base stations together via Gigabit Ethernet don't bother trying to do it with the Cisco it has some incompatibility problem. But I'm pleased to inform you that the Netgear works perfectly as the switch to tie all the airport extremes together to make one big network.
If you need to open ports for service pass through you will need to do all your own setup of the services, since by default the Netgear provides you with none.
The manual appears to be of good size but leaves a lot to be desired when trying to actually use it to solve a problem.
Ohh and when you have a problem, tech support doesn't seem to be the brightest I've talked too. For the amount of money spent on this unit, I'd expect tech support to bend over backwards to help you. But thats not the case, in fact support seems to find the quickest, easiest, way to answer the question, completely disregarding the fact that the person on the other end might know more then them.
