Others say...
"It's a TROJAN horse with criminal intent" Having this product (if one can call this terrible horror-show a product) already installed on my new iMac caused it to crash / freeze every 5-10 minutes. It took me a couple of hours to understand the issue is not the iMac but this trojan horse called Office 2008 for Mac. Uninstalled it - and there went all my problems, the famous beach ball (blue screen of death for macs) and the like. I wonder when will one of the Microsofties come out of their holes and let the public know the truth: that they are selling products for macs with a criminal intent - to crash them....What other explanation could be true ? Not enough testing ? Oh, come on.... If I could give this terrible thing only ZERO stars...
"If you want your boss to laugh at your work, then use this "product!"" This one's unreliable and buggy. I have had spacing problems when Windows Microsoft Office 2007 users open my documents. In my opinion, it's lame, just like Windows Vista!
"Worst Microsoft product ever." I gave this one star because Amazon does not let you give zero.
Can a product be so bad I will uninstall and go back to the clunky buggy Mac Office 2004? I think so. Also, do not do what I did and let the installation program convince you to remove all prior versions: now I not only have to go back and reinstall the old program, but all updates too.
2008 was supposed to be faster and fix all the bugs from 2004. And I believed them. It fixed one print bug and added many new bugs. One delightful one: parts of text disappear in normal and preview, but reappear when you highlight the section. It seems that the text is there, you just can't see it. Plus, print view is screwed up. They arbitrarily reassigned the locations of several menu items, usually moving to another area and then to a new submenu. LOTS of new submenus. Stunningly, they no longer found space for RECENT in the main FILE menu, Now, to find your list of recent documents, you have to do to the FIle menu, then to a new submenu for recent documents.
Oh, and it is slower than ever, Universal Binary code notwithstanding.
Apart from the bugs and clunkiness, it seems that every single change they made makes the program less suitable to the way I use a word processing program. If my clients did not use MS, I would go to Mac "Pages" and never look back.
I won't even comment on the problems of going back and forth between the .doc format and the new .docx format. I am sure others have addressed that joy.
One amusing note. Initially they arbitrarily replaced the toolbar icon for "Save as" to a new, stupid icon with a stylized MS "O" for office. Apparently I was not the only one who hated this: one of the two (so far) massive "updates" changed the icon back to "Save as"
"Thank you!" Since I didn't have Microsoft Office software, I often sufferd from writing/turning in reports. This is very useful, and I'm happy with it now. Thank you!
"Only for those forced to use Exchange" As most of the other reviewers have written, this product is not worth buying. I got a free copy as I went to the product launch, and was soon incensed that Microsoft could sell this with a straight face.
Let's look at the listed "product features" one by one: 1. Streamlined user interface runs natively on both Intel- and PowerPC-based Macs - Streamlined is an interesting word to use. I never had the displeasure of using Office for Mac 2004 on my Intel Mac, but from all reports it ran terribly. I shudder to think that this edition is supposedly running better. The Office applications are without a doubt the slowest applications running on my Mac, and this includes Parallels which allows me to run Windows in a virtual machine. The idea that this is "streamlined" is laughable.
2. Open XML file formats, the Office Art graphics engine, and other features that result in compatibility and file fidelity - This is probably the main reason new-comers would buy Office, for compatibility with Office for Windows users. However, the compatibility is full of problems. Do not spend any time working on layout for your Word documents if you're then sending them to a Windows user; the layout will be completely ruined and you'll have to do it all again. I also have Office for Windows running through Parallels, and I usually end up using that if I hope to share my documents. Office for Mac just doesn't do it properly. Keep in mind that Apple's Pages can read docx (some say better than Word for Mac does), although it can't write back to docx.
3. Professional design is within your power with hundreds of new customizable templates and suite-wide themes, SmartArt graphics, and the new Publishing Layout View in Word 2008 - This is all well and good but if you wanted great templates and layout capabilities, you would buy iWork for a quarter of the price... which is certainly my recommendation. Did I mention the layout capabilities don't work reliably anyway?
4. My Day keeps you connected to all of the day's action. Command your calendar, tackle your tasks, and simplify your day - If you own a Mac you have iCal. Why would this be a selling point to anyone?
5. Includes: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Entourage, Microsoft Server Exchange Support - And therein lies perhaps the main reason Office for Mac will still be purchase even though it is greatly inferior to competing products: Microsoft Server Exchange Support. Apparently much of the world runs on this these days. Let's be thankful that Google and SalesForce are teaming up to take it down once and for all...
So in summary, the real reasons to buy this product are as follows: 1. You are forced to require Microsoft Server Exchange Support. Err... I put a number 1 because I thought there would be more but there actually isn't. Compatibility with Windows users is important, but Office for Mac just doesn't deliver here. Personally I would buy iWork - did I mention it is a quarter of the price for an equivalent product? Microsoft Office for Mac is a typical half-hearted, over-priced attempt from Microsoft, but no one can deny that their propaganda will make it a best-seller.

What our customer's say!
"So buggy, even in July 2008", The primary reason I switched to the mac about 8 months ago was because Microsoft produces incredibly buggy, terrible software. Unfortunately, I sometimes need to use Microsoft Office, so I got Office for the mac. Office not only sucks on the pc, it sucks on the mac too.
My primary problem today is that it does not play nice with Spaces. My Word document is constantly zooming around to difference Spaces, without my asking it to. So, about every 10 minutes, I save and close the document, then reopen it. And it's ok for a bit, then the zooming starts again. Just ridiculous.
"Office 2008 is so bad I'm reinstalling 2004", I was happy to upgrade to Office 2008 for Mac (I have a new macbook with Leopard) but its so bad I am going to reinstall the old office. Never done that before. Powerpoint is an amazing memory hog. 2G of RAM for a 40mb presentation? Get real. Word is ok except for the "new" standard, which means documents must be saved in two formats (what were they thinking?). Excel is the worst. The menu forces one to select from projects and elements galleries that are ridiculous, not useful and impossible to work around. And no more macros? Was there no beta testing? I actually paid microsoft $50 more for phone help to find hidden menus. Type "chart label" into the Help menu and get No Results Found. I could go on, but my bottom line is don't upgrade.
"Microsoft screws up copy and paste, again", Yes, its slow, and they left out VBA support. And it not very stable, either. But the biggest problem I have with the new Office is that MS has once again managed to screw up copy and paste.
I've often used PowerPoint as an archive for graphics, text and equations. I paste stuff into it, and later, when I need it, copy it back out into other documents. I've recently discovered that in Office 2008, things go in, but they don't come back out.
For instance, you can create an equation in MathType and paste it into PowerPoint. It looks fine. But you can't copy it and paste it anywhere else. I was trying to copy it into Adobe Illustrator, but also found that you can't even copy it back into MathType to edit it. Wow.
You can copy text in PowerPoint, but when you paste it into other programs, it loses its formatting. This worked fine in Office 2004.
Besides the copy and paste problems, I've also noticed that some graphics seem to get changed to lower resolution when opened in Office 2008. These are from files created in Office 2004.
The one thing in Office 2008 I do like is the ability to import EPS files and display them. It was about time! But that feature alone is not enough to save this release.
"WORST OFFICE EVER!!!", This software is significantly slower than Office 2004, despite that 2004 ran under Rosetta, and this one is Universal. There are a number of bugs (try dragging a chart in Excel, it will likely disappear... was there in 2004 also). Even after the first service pack/update, it is still garbage. Entourage is still as bad as it was in 2004, if not worse. Word is so slow, that an person of average typing speed can type a few sentences before it actually shows up on the screen (or an entire paragraph if you have Parallels running). There are few new features, most of this is interface change. They also removed macros, which won't affect the vast majority of users. They should have added a Formula Review button/screen as they've had in Excel 2003 for PC (it may have existed earlier). They should have also tested it to see how slow it would go (which maybe they did - make Office as painfully slow as possible to try to get Mac owners to buy PCs just to get fast Office).
This "upgrade" follows the Vista pattern - Office 2004 was better.
A better choice would be to buy Parallels, XP Pro, and Office 2003 or iWork, or something - anything - else. Heck, even Office 2004 is better.
"Don't upgrade!", Excel in MS2008 for Mac out and out sucks. It can't handle spreadsheets of a few hundred records without hanging repeatedly on my G4 notebook with 2 MB RAM and nothing else running. Then it has a totally useless automatic function that insists on trying to open the file on which it crashed, and of course, most of the time it hangs and you can't do anything until you change the name of the file so it can't find it. It does work on my Quad desktop with 4 MB RAM. Even then the software is so bloated that everything runs like frozen molasses. Word is not hanging on me but also has gone beyond becoming bloatware. The only reason I use it is because my workplace requires me to use Entourage and the rest of this bloatware. Wish I had read reviews before upgrading!

Read this reviews before You buy...
"I hate microsoft, but.......", I am NOT a fan of Microsoft. At work I use PC's and I have Office 2003, which I need to use extensively. I primarily use Word and Excel and occasionally I use PowerPoint and Publisher.
At home I have been using free open source software for years. I was primarily using NeoOffice. I found this to be just fine for my home use. At home we occasionally needed to create spreadsheets and word type documents. More often it was opening or viewing documents created by others. NeoOffice suited us well.
More recently my son's have been working with Office at school and had the desire to work on school projects from home. I bought this software reluctantly so that my boys could seamlessly move documents between their school based PC's and our home Mac's.
To date this is working fantastically. Furthermore I am quickly discovering that Office 08 for Mac is far superior to Office 03 for Windows. I see most of the complaints deal with lost functionality when upgrading from 04 for Mac. I was not in the situation and I realize that may make a difference. Also, it is quite possible the a newer version of Office for Windows is more like the Mac version, until my employer upgrade I will not know.
For now, I must confess that we are perfectly happy with this product.
"What a mistake", I upgraded from Office 2004 to Office 2008 because Office 2004 had so many bugs in it that I could not do work sometimes. Little things like crashing, text disappearing all by itself, formatting being impossible to fix, graphics missing parts, spurious error messages like "This file cannot be saved because your hard disk is full"...
In Office 2008, completely updated, THE BUGS ARE EVEN WORSE than in Office 2004. I paid 500 dollars for this?
I don't care about what "features" it has or does not have. I just want to type and edit pages of text. The bugs in Office 2008 make typing and editing even more difficult than in Office 2004.
And since the people who made this have no common sense, they made the default file formats for everything different (for example, .docx rather than .doc), so if you make a document and save it and send it to someone with any earlier version of Office, they cannot open the file.
I have no choice but to use Office because that is what my clients use.
Worse than taking my money, they waste my time.
"From a Graphic Designer's perspective", Granted, Microsoft Office is not a design program and should not be judged that way. However, as a Graphic Designer you have to use this tool quite often whether it is for Powerpoint presentations or creating stationary pieces in Word for your clients. From my rather short experience with this product, my feeling is a mixed one. My first impression was very positive actually. Office is notorious with its chaotic user interface, with menu items that seem to be placed randomly about, supposedly without any inner logic. For people accustomed with Adobe's superior user interface, Office can drive you mad. This new product is a step forward in this regard. The basic menu remained the same old inexplicable mess, but the added and expanded visual interface and palettes are putting some order where there was none before. So far, so good. Problems began when I actually sat down and started to work on a new Word template that was supposed to go to a PC using client. Importing a PNG image worked once. When trying to import a second time the program did not respond and I needed to restart it. After completing the document, I opened it on my older PC to see if it will work on my client's end. The transition between the two operating systems was not smooth at all. Tables got chaotic, copy changed colors, line breaks got all messed up. So I had to redo some work on my PC and then send it away. So bottom line is mixed. Barring the unfortunate bugs, it is a more pleasant experience than previous versions. If you prefer working on a Mac only environment like me, then you will have to check the final document on a PC, otherwise it is a recipe for trouble. A half baked cookie.
"junk piece of software", Although I used (used?) mainly WORD, I am totally disappointed. While working on a document the beach ball shows-up and that's it. No way to continue working, you have to force quit. I still haven't managed how to complete one single document with this new junk piece of software.
"Crashes constantly", Excel quit on me 10 times in 15 minutes the other day. Word crashes as well, but not as often. I haven't had a chance to test PowerPoint yet. I am less than impressed with this new version.
