"A great painting program for the price." Well I've only had Painter Essentials4 for a few days but I'm a fan.I get the feeling it is to PainterX what Photoshop Elements is to Photoshop - a lot of the power at a fraction of the price. I've used PS Elements for a while and have a plug in (Virtual Painter) for rendering paintings from photos and it does a good job. But for a few bucks more PE4 has it beat. And if you are familiar with Elements you will be at home with PE4.A lot of the same tools and you can save in photoshop format.Highly reccomended.
"I'm glad I've used it" This is a really unique item to me. I don't mess with pictures much but have always wanted to be able to craft a unique gift for someone on those "off" holidays where a small gift or card is expected, but I just don't get around to getting the card. This has given me a solution for Valentine's Day. OK, I hate buying flowers every year. I don't like buying chocolate in bulk shaped like little hearts. I don't like teddy bears. But this product provided me with a way to give my darlin' a picture of us that she hadn't seen before in a way that would more than likely cost a lot more than I have a tolerance for. It was fairly easy to use. There's a tutorial to take you through the steps, that I felt was very helpful. I jumped out about half way through and started playing with it myself. I couldn't stop messing with the photos. There were tons of options to select from. Brushes and types of paper and colors and styles and on and on. Every major style of art can be reproduced by me on my photos. I can change the colors, the size, the layout and if I'm stuck, well, you can just let the computer do it for you and then just stop it during the process at any time. Yes, they have an auto feature if you're not feeling very creative. I'm sure more experienced artists and photographers have very expensive tools at their disposal, but this is perfect for me. A small learning curve and great results.
I was really impressed and I didn't expect to be.
"Fun in a Painting Program" Corel Painter Essentials is a wonderful entry level drawing and painting program. It is just plain fun to use. Even if you don't have a drawing tablet, you can still create a masterpiece. Select your color, select your brush and begin. The brush tool reminded me of tempra painting in kindergarten. The full wide brush strokes. Going over an existing line again, with a different paint color, to see how the blend looks. Results were just as good (or bad) as I remember them growing up. If you prefer drawing to painting you can choose pen or charcoal. You can scan sketches or photos and paint directly on them. You can even have the program automatically transform an imported picture into an oil painting, impressionist painting, watercolor sketch, pencil sketch or a chalk drawing. The included tutorials will show you how easy it is to transform and create beautiful works of art. The program is easy to use. The auto transformations are useful and the results can be fantastic. The wide selection of tools and palettes will make almost anyone happy. Definitely this is one program an art hobbyist should have. Even a professional could find this program to be a useful tool - the results are astonishing. Enjoy!
"Not up our alley" Reviewing software can be tricky because people have different expectations and uses. So keep in mind that this review is from a couple who tend to use such software for picture and touch ups than for drawing or painting.
Overall, the program ran slow on our computer for some reason (note that our computer is new and is set up to handle high volumes of photo and video editing). Also, for someone who uses Photoshop all the time, the interface on Painter was not very intuitive. So we used the video help on Painter. It was detailed and helpful, but took longer than we had excepted. Finally, we could not get the mouse pen to work, because we kept getting a conflict error.
One project we attempted was to convert some pictures into nice paintings. We had tried this on Photoshop, but wanted to get greater detail than Photoshop allowed. Unfortunately, given the above issues, we could not manage any better results than with Photoshop.
This program may be more up the alley of someone interested in doing their own drawings or paintings. But for us, it was not the right choice.
"Good for intermediate to advanced user!" While I found this software fun to dally around with, I also found it to be a bit difficult for a novice such as myself. That said, my teenage daughter, who is very good with this type of software, found it to be useful in conjunction with some other software she owns from Corel. I personally would like to see more interactive tutorials that explain a little more thoroughly; however, for the more advanced user, I do believe this software is very good.

What our customer's say!
"Another great product from Corel", I really loved this product. I'm an Adobe Photoshop man myself but found Corel's Painter Essentials to be excellent when doing a few simple things to pictures. It's very easy to use. Highly recommended!
"Not what I needed after all", I was hoping for more scrapbooking options, so this wasn't what I needed. It's a good product, and it was my bad not to look at it closer before I ordered it, but I should have stuck with a Photoshop-type product instead.
"A Quality Product", Corel Painter Essentials 4 is a software package that runs on either Windows or Mac systems designed to enable you to draw or paint using a computer or to edit digital photographs to make them look like drawings, paintings, or to do touch up. The application would be most applicable to artists and designers looking for a tool with which to create new images, or to regular non-professionals looking for a nice way to edit photographs to make them look more interesting for family and friends.
The software comes with a tutorial that explains the process and makes the program easy to use. If the uses of this application are something that you would like to do, then this seems to be a very good software package. Take a look at the reviews here for yourself, and you'll notice that the only 1 and 2 star reviews are from people who could not figure out how to install the software or didn't take the time to watch the tutorial to learn how to use it. In other words -- no negative reviews of the actual product itself! That's pretty good design for software.
However, if you are not interested in drawing from scratch or creating painting/drawing-like pictures, this may not be necessary for you. I use Photoshop to edit my photographs, and as I am not a designer, that has been enough so far for me. But I could see uses for this and may use it more in the future should the need arise.
"Good for Tech Imaging", This looks like a fine software program if you're into creating images. I'm really not that tech savvy and have not used the program only for that reason. The product does not come with the markers, etc. that are pictured - that is for illustration purposes only.
Corel makes great products and this one should be no different.
"Masterpieces the Easy Way", Whether you're using a Wacom tablet or just a mouse, you can quickly achieve painterly styles either free hand or with existing art and photographs with a few clicks and create unique pieces of art with minimal effort.
Being a user of Photoshop for about 14 years, I can tell you, this is not a competing product - it is a complementary product. The two do very different things in very different ways. Great for amateur artists or professionals, Painter 4 Essentials has great video tutorials to get you started.
I installed this on two different machines to test it out - once on a one-year-old MacBook that has the older video card w/ 64MB of shared graphics memory and on a new (early 2008) iMac with a 512MB graphics card. The difference is striking on performance. While this product would probably be great on one of the newer MacBooks with 144MB of shared memory, it stuttered and was slow on my older MacBook. It flies on my iMac... and this is clearly due to the graphics memory differences and not because of a moderate processor jump.
I'd recommend anyone trying this new out of the box to sit through the tutorials at least once to familiarize themselves with the interface - to me, it was not initially intuitive.
Fun, affordable, powerful product.

"Perfect for Photo manipulation", Painter Essentials 4 is an excellent program for anyone interested in creating digital art, without breaking the bank. With a host of natural media brushes one can paint on a digital canvas without fear of making mistakes, thanks to the ubiquitous "Undo" command.
Being quite familiar with PE 4's big brother, Painter X, I wanted to see what PE 4 was all about. This program is targeted towards beginners, but there are a lot of powerful features under the hood. Not an artist? No problem with Painter Essentials 4. One really nice feature the program has is the ability to take any digital photo and transform it into a wide-variety of natural media paintings. Want an airbrushed version of your favorite digital photo? What about charcoal? Water-color? No problem. Push a button and watch PE 4 digitally 'compose' your new masterpiece.
While Painter Essentials 4 doesn't have all the features of Painter X, I was able to do just about everything I typically do with the professional version. The interface has been overhauled - it's nothing like Painter X.
The program is divided into two modes: 1) Drawings and Paintings and 2) Photo Painting
You can mix colors on the fly, much like you would using a traditional artist palette, making it easy to select the perfect color for your composition. The overall user interface is intuitive and quick for beginners to grasp.
Painter Essentials 4 uses the "Real Bristle" painting system, which mimics natural brushes on a digital canvas. To really take advantage of painting with these brushes, you'll want to factor in the purchase of a graphics tablet (I recommend the Wacom brand.)
The most overlooked part of this program are the free video tutorials that are also included (clocking in at 135 minutes!). Painter master John Derry shows you the features in depth and also how to take the best advantage of them. Source images that are used in the tutorial are provided on the disc. It would be wise to watch the video to really get the most out of the program.
The program runs fine under both Mac OS X Tiger and Leopard. The package includes both Mac and PC versions.
Once again, to maximize your usage of this program, I would strongly recommend purchasing a graphics tablet. With one of these hardware peripherals, you can take advantage of painting and drawing with pressure sensitivity.
Painter Essentials 4 is a great value for the money. Recommended for beginner and intermediate hobbyists alike.
"As a drawing program great! Photo editing so so...", I loved the drawing functions within this program and found them somewhat easy to get the hang of -- took a little bit in that they were not as intuitive as I would like however once I figured them out the functionality was good.
On the picture editing side I did not have as much patience. It was not intuitive and I was seldom pleased with the results. If you are looking for an editor for pictures and giving pictures special effects I would by far recommend Adobe Photoshop Elements.
"Didn't understand how to use this!", I gave this to my 18yr old Granddaughter. We did not understand how to use this! She is a artist, but this seemed strange to her, something to be used with the computer.
"Ready, set, create!", Back in the mid 90's I went to school to become a graphic designer, and while my career ended up going in a totally different direction, I still find the idea of using a computer to create or enhance artwork and photography quite appealing. I decided to take a chance on Corel's new Painter Essentials 4. I liked the idea of "one stop shopping" for both illustration and photo manipulation software, and my experience with Corel in the past was positive.
I've found Painter Essentials 4 particularly useful in creating freehand illustrations (I'm using the mouse only - no special hardware), coloring scanned line artwork, and editing and enhancing photographs. I love to sketch in pencil and then ink, but am an indifferent colorist at best, so Painter Essentials 4 is a nice tool for adding color to my drawings. The photo enhancing features are great for adding fun special effects to photos, and can be used to restore damaged photographs as well. The software features a wide array of available colors and effects, so the sky is really the limit when it comes to what you want to do with this software.
My only complaint is that the operation of this software is not as intuitive as it could be. I was familiar with the various tools and functions (like riding a bike, it all came back pretty quickly), but someone brand new to this kind of software will need to spend some serious time with the users guide before they can take advantage of this program's various bells and whistles.
Other than that, I'm quite happy with Corel Painter Essentials 4. It's not at the same professional level as Adobe's one-two punch of Illustrator and Photoshop, but for everyday users it's an outstanding graphics product.
"Can't get it installed. ", I'd love to tell you what I think of this program, but I can't get it installed. The documentation is good, and it appears to have great features, but I don't know for sure. I'll update this review if I manage to get it to work.
