"Awesome game", I had played this game before I bought it with friends. When they described it to me it sounded completely boring. It's one of those games that can't really be explained (like Apples to Apples ... a game with nouns and adjectives) but it a lot more fun to play. I recommend it from Amazon because you're probably not going to find it for less anywhere else.

"Very nice game!", We were very satisfied with this game. The concept is refreshing, although it's a step-up over monopoly; the game has a good set of rules that let's one finish up in a finite amount of time plus the variable aspect of the game brings in certain degree of novelty each time we played. My ten year old was able to quickly understand all the rules and wanted to keep playing. Definitely recommend the product. Just one suggestion to the game makers, maybe the thickness of the hexes can be worked onto so they latch and stay on better.

"This is a new version of the Game", This is the new version of the game, meaning that the cards and tiles have a different picture on them and the water tiles are a different shape than the older version. All the changes are good in my opinion and the new water pieces hold the board together much better than the old one.

"Fun Times", I got this game for my daughter for Christmas after she highly recommended it from playing in class. We were not disappointed as the game has given us hours of fun. There are many different scenarios each time you play so it is fresh each time you play although I can already feel the desire to get an expansion pack for a different level of gaming.

"Not just for guys", Most of the reviews I've seen here talk about how their boys love the game. I just wanted to add that my (very girly) 12 year old and (very cynical) 15 year old girls absolutely LOVE this game. We opened it up for the first time two days ago, felt inititially overwhelmed by the directions, and, after about 5 or 10 minutes of play, got hooked. Since you need 3 to play (and since my husband hasn't gotten bitten by the bug yet), I have finally found the perfect lever to make my kids take care of chores or homework--do X,Y, and Z and then we'll play Catan. They are gleefully looking forward to teaching their uncles how to play, and then pounding them unmercifully.

"A awesomely addicting game", This game has solved our family's love/hate relationship with board games. Because it's not always clear who's winning until the final play, everyone can stay interested in the game even if they're not having much success. Catan plays a little faster than your Monopoly-type game (though inevitably longer than the single hour they tell you it will take on the box). Using resources and trade instead of money and keeping your armies in card form takes out the cutthroat nature of most domination games. The result is a competitive and addicting strategy game that actually comes to a peaceable conclusion as opposed to an abrupt end as the board flies across the room.

The game doesn't make sense until you've played it once through, so you have to just give it a try before declaring it too complicated. Once you get it, the basic premise and rules of the game mimic a feudal society to a surprisingly realistic degree. And it's not nearly as hard as the long instructions make it seem.

If your intended playing group is more than four, buy the 5-6 expansion pack. It's worth it. You do eventually get tired of Settlers of Catan. But you're more likely to realize suddenly that it's four in the morning and you've played three games straight without stopping for so much as a food break (true story). And, surprisingly, it's easier to forget who won, which never seemed possible before in our family.

"Great game!", After being convinced by a friend that this game wasn't for the über-nerd I bought it for my roommate and I. I am totally sold on it now and is one of my favorite games of all time now. The game board can be randomized each time you play introducing new strategies and obstacles keeping it fresh. I liked it so much I bought the game again to give to my little brother (11 years old) and he love it too demanding to play it constantly. Learning the game can seem daunting at first, but in actuality it's very simple (I taught it to my little brother in a few minutes). Now I'm looking to get the expansion sets for their added elements.

The instructions that come with the game are in color and very good including a setup for a starter game. It also comes with little plastic re-sealable bags for the numerous small pieces making storing the game easy. The game says its for 3-4 players which is definitely more fun (expandable up to 6 with an expansion set), but it's definitely worth playing if you've only got two players.

"settlers of catan is cuthroat and not fun", My family bought this game to play at Christmas. Once we figured out all the rules it was a slow, boring strategy game. The idea is interesting, but there are too many rules regulating trade that make it a slow, agonizing board game experience.

"Great fun for you and your friends", Excellent game for evenings with friends. Every game is different and therefore very interesting. You don't know the winner till the end, things change during the game process every turn.
The rules are pretty simple but it will take soem time to learn all of them.
Currently looking forward to buy an extension.


"Risk in an Agrarian Setting", If you have played the game Risk, then you will see the similarities between that game and this one. However, Catan is set in an agrarian society, and, as such, may appeal more to families. It is rarely "violent," although your fellow game players may be tempted to throttle you should you place the Robber Baron on their property.

Contrary to the box's assertion, this game is not easily learned in 15 minutes. It is one that you really need to play repeatedly and fairly frequently in order to fully enjoy. The learning experience is much more enjoyable if you are able to play with experienced Catan players. One caveat, if you are playing with a "shady" character - beware their advice, they are probably setting you up to their advantage!

Almost anyone will enjoy this game. We have played with our daughter and her husband; they frequently play with their pastor and his wife. Our nephews (13 and 15) loved playing this and have requested it for Christmas. Quite a feat when you consider they are serious video-gamers!

On a personal note, I have noticed that individuals who are engineers or pilots tend to do better at playing the game overall. They seem to be able to view the game in total, taking in the "big picture," rather than focusing on separate distinct parts. Individuals, who are not spatially oriented or have more of an artistic penchant, enjoy the game, but not to the extent that more technically oriented players seem to.

We bought the fourth edition because there were no more third editions available. The quality has definitely deteriorated; the card stock is thinner, and the dice seem to roll 7's much more frequently than is statistically probable. If the second set we purchased for friends has the same characteristic, we are going to replace the dice. On the other hand, the interlocking border is a welcome addition, and we had no trouble connecting the pieces.

I rated this item as four stars rather than five because it is not universally appealing and because it does take some time to learn to play.
