What our customer's say!
"Bad deal", I thought I could save money using this cheaper version of turbotax. I was unable to transfer information from last year's turbotax which was done online. I had to start all over, paying the online price, and returned this bit of useless programming to turbotax.
"too basic to be of use", To those complaining of incorrect treatment of income or expenses, for years this has been the case with TurboTax.
I've always used TurboTax and I can't remember a single return that was correct without substantial editing. Anytime you get off the beaten track (partnerships, trusts, Katrina damage, etc) its a deficient app. You must check your returns and insure the manner in which deductions are being handled makes sense.
You also have to check what's printed on the forms. Last year I got a letter from the IRS about forms not substantiating the deductions taken on the 1040. Crazy, but what I was seeing on the screen was not what was being printed out on the returns. Not a financial issue but another waste of time, and exposure to an audit, courtesy of Intuit.
With the Basic version now stripped of much of its functionality, I guess Intuit expects us to fork over twice the price for the same, poor, level of functionality that used to be in Basic.
Overpriced products that don't work correctly are not a winning combination. At some point the users will have the last laugh.
"price going up, feature going down", I started using Turbotax almost ten years ago, and as Taxcut quality improved and TurboTax kept raising prices, I switched to Taxcut three years ago. This year, after a friend's recommendation, I tried to use Turbotax again, what a piece of junk. TaxCut imports pretty much all the information from TurboTax files, but TurboTax DOES NOT. All TurboTax users should switch to TaxCut, TaxCut is easier to use, covers all the issues, and cheaper. TurboTax has nothing to compete with other than a longer time brand name.
"TurboTax and Connector", So far, Turbo Tax Basic installed easily and imported financial data from my broker ect with no problems which saved me a lot of keystokes.
My complaint is with Amazon which did not send me a cable I ordered along with Turbo Tax. This cable addition to the order would have qualified me for free shipping, so my TOTAL cost would have been about the same as Turbo Tax alone. Amazon ackowledged my complaint about this screw-up but, so far, have done nothing to correct it. They make it very difficult to contact a human being, so I'm thinking of taking my business elsewhere. Dexter Goad
"The Online Basic Version Might Be All You Need", These comments refer to the basic version of Turbo Tax available through their Web site. The review here by "Jeff from Denver" is exactly right. I'm pretty much locked in to Turbo Tax on an annual basis, and it does a great job of finding various things I would miss if I was still filing paper returns, and transferring last year's data and so forth. But the last two years have been confusing as Intuit has tried to market more advanced versions of the tax product. Which one is right? It's akin to Microsoft's multiple versions of the Vista operating system: There are too many and it gets confusing. Having acquired a number of mutual funds along with dividend and interest income in 2007, I was on the verge of paying for the "Deluxe" version of Turbo Tax, thinking that with these investments it would be the correct thing to do. But after reading Jeff's review--and after feeling duped by last year's "Super Deduction Finder" version--I decided to use the basic version for only $11.20 (Fidelity-sponsored, through March 28th).
Well, it worked fine. I was able to automatically import all my financial data from Fidelity, enter an IRA contribution, and even file an obscure K-1 form for an investment partnership that my wife is involved in (via the Tools, Forms option).
So I agree with Jeff completely. I think Intuit's marketing is running way ahead of itself and confusing people. Of course for people with complicated finances those advanced products could be of use. For those with more straightforward circumstances, I would think the basic version is all you need. It worked fine for me this year, whereas last year I overpaid for the "Super Deduction Finder" version.

"10+ Years with TurboTax; is 2007 the Last?", As a longtime loyal Quicken and TurboTax user, I was very disappointed to find a hidden and potentially nasty surprise in this year's version of TurboTax Basic and how poor the customer service was once I found it.
I contributed to a Roth IRA in 2007 which TurboTax duly noted was not deductible, which is exactly correct (traditional IRA contributions are deductible, Roth's are not). But what I didn't know was that TurboTax had actually listed the Roth IRA contribution as "Investment counsel and advisory fees" and had deducted the contributions on Schedule A anyway. This was not discovered until another professional tax preparation firm reviewed my return and pointed it out to me.
When I tried to contact TurboTax regarding the incident, I first received no confirmation that they had received my e-mail, then later was told to just delete the offending form and re-enter. I did exactly that and it did remove the Roth IRA contribution from Schedule A, but did nothing to fix the bug that put it there in the first place.
Disappointed and more than little bit concerned about other hidden flaws that might be lurking out there, I'm now considering alternatives for the next tax season.
"easy to use, but.....", We have been using turbo tax for quite a few years now. It is easy and has all the forms one would need to do either a long form or short form. The only thing that was a surprise for us was when we got to the end and found out it cost over $17 to e-file rather than mail it in. We opted for a 41 cent stamp instead!
"BEWARE MAC USERS!!!", The TurboTax 2007 CD will only work on the OS X 10.4 or higher version of MAC.
"No more Turbo Tax", I've used Turbo Tax for the past few years. When I lived in Minnesota it was free to file both fed and state. Then I moved to Colorado last year, mistake #1. To e-file fed was still free but it was $10 for state...okay, that's not bad. This year to e-file Turbo Tax wanted $30 for both!! Whatever happened to lower income e-filing for free?! Sorry, Turbo Tax, you changed what use to be a good thing. Now you've lost a customer.
"Features are there, in spite of what Intuit implies", I bought TTAX Basic and installed it. It has all of the usual forms and interviews to support them. The Intuit web site lists all of the forms included. I even found Schedule C in there, even though several people have reported it missing (perhaps in was added back in the latest downloads?).
Confusion reigns because of the way Intuit seems to want to push people to higher cost products. There is extra help in higher cost products, and maybe some extra features (Deduction Finder or Cost Basis Lookup). If you don't need those things, TTAX Basic works fine.
My return includes 1040, Schedules A, B, C-EZ, D, SE and all of the forms required for IRA contributions and rollovers, and annualization forms for estimated tax penalty calculations, plus many, many forms I don't need.
Take a look at the online version of Basic (no need to pay anything or even register if you won't be saving your work) to verify that everything you need is really there.
The problem isn't that TTAX has lost features. It's that Intuit's guides to which version to use IMPLIES that did if you don't read closely enough.
