"Good price, but beware of factory support policy" The price advertised here is very attractive, but anyone contemplating it should do some research on Universal Remotes' VERY aggressive limitations on support. URC has been focusing their business more and more on professional installers and high end dealers. If you buy this remote from anyone but an authorized dealer you will get one download of the programming software from URC. You will NOT be able to get updates for software improvements or codes for new equipment, which are available only through authorized dealers. You also won't get any warranty service from URC if anything goes wrong. (Neither Amazon nor the dealer they're representing here are authorized URC dealers.)
This policy is obviously pretty controversial among the Home Theater and enthusiast crowd. You can find lots of yelling about it in the various forums. So far, however, URC is hanging tough.
You can find the relatively short list of authorized online and B&M dealers on the URC website. They all charge around $400 for the MX-810.
"Awesome Remote - Dreadful Software" For the record, I'm a bright guy with years of programming and audio experience. One of my pet peeves is user interface (UI). It's rarely done well, and when it's bad, it's utterly frustrating.
I'm a huge fan of URC, and have an R7 that I've used for years. I eagerly ponied up the cash for the MX-810 when it came out.
The remote is sexy as all get-out. It's a beautiful remote. The buttons are great and the screen is very clear. The auto-on when you pick it up is beautiful. The physical remote gets 5+ stars.
The software is dreadful though. It gets zero stars. It's designed as a wizard so it should be easier to configure. It's not. First you have to figure out how they want you to think - then you'll make some progress. Even then, doing things like nesting macros or adding lines in the middle of a macro can be all but impossible. A "browser" feature is included to (in theory) give you lots of control, but even that is painful to use.
This remote could be a real home run, but the software makes it a real dud. At $400 retail, there is no excuse for this software. If URC updates the software with something that has real power, or even gives some sort of scripting interface, then I'll re-buy. As it stands, I can't recommend the investment. It's sad too. It really is a beautiful remote.

"takes patience to program, but worth it" I wanted a wand type remote that is flexible. I have a semi complex av setup with 10 components that are remote controlled. I spent the better part of a full day setting up the remote, which included many activity functions. This remote is very customizable. There are pages of screens that can be named anything you want. It also has the ability to load tv network logos that will change the channel to that network station when pressed. There was some trial and error during setup, but the more I did with it the more familiar I became with it. It can learn virtually any command from any remote. I would recommend it to anyone with some patience. If you want a remote that is very simple to set up, look elsewhere. If you want a remote that is almost limitless in what it can control, look no further.

What our customer's say!
"Not worth the effort for a moderate system", I've recently upgraded my entire home theater system to a full THX setup and wanted to treat myself to a comparable universal remote. Right from the start I was disappointed in this remote as only two of my six components were in the online database (all name brand gear). After another two hours learning the software I figure I'd need another 4-6 hours to complete the job - no thanks. Before I decided to return this I jumped over to the LogiTech website and found all my gear listed and a much simpler software interface.
Life is too short to spend a day programming your remote, unless it also gets the popcorn and drinks for you.
"Worth the effort!", The quality of this remote (and the final result of some tinkering) - is worth the extra effort. The bright, clear display; fit and finish; solid button feel - are un-matched. I've tried most of the others, and this remote has great in-hand feel and easily accessed keys in the dark. I'm not a big fan of the big screen only remotes as they are hard to use without looking at them. The software MUST have been redesigned since some of these other reviews - it is easy to use and quite intuitive. There is one small glitch - you must unplug, then replug in the remote to do the download to it, but I am sure they will fix this. And if your remote isn't in the database, there is a cool on-screen process to mark the "bad" buttons and it will automatically walk you through the learning process. nice. At this current price, I would highly recommend giving this one a try.
"Great remote--lousy software", I basically agree with a lot of the other reviews I read before making the purchase. The remote is great (though I really wish it came with a docking station instead of a cheesy adapter to plug it into for recharging) but the software sucks. Once you learn how the software works (which you'll do on your own as there's next to no documentation) there's an amazing array of things you can do--definitely worth buying through here and not at the Big Box stores. Don't be surprised when you program the software to do "A" and then you synch the new programming to the remote and the remote does "B" (aka... something completely unexpected and not what you were looking for). It FAR from perfect but a little persistence, insight, and patience will get you there. I'd highly recommend the product! Five stars except for the software!!
"Excellent remote, Wizard needs more time at Hogwarts", I have a system that includes an HD TIVO, DVD, HDTV, VCR, CD changer, and an antenna rotor. I also redistribute video to other rooms, so the RF features were a major reason for an upgrade. I have used other programmable remotes from Sony, a Prono Neo and URC, as well as two versions of TIVO remotes. The MX-810 will do everything except the two-way communication supported by my receiver. It is the first universal remote I have found that works well with a TIVO. The software will do what you need, but it takes a while to learn how to manipulate it rather than have it manipulate you :-) I use some RF and some IR, so I can move from room to room and run the TIVO and receiver remotely, while controlling a local TV. This is far better than putting IR receivers for my Xantech system all over the house, though I still use them in conjuction with the MRF260 blaster in the cabinet.
"Remote is Great! Software, not so much", I did a lot of research before choosing this remote, and it got the nod over others in the same class, because the button layout is much much better than the offerings from Logitech. The rechargeable battery is great, although I was tempted by the "charging cradle" with the Harmony.
I fully agree with the others that have said this is a great, sexy remote, but the software is very flaky. If you have patience and tenacity, go for it. I spent 5-6 hours over 3 days getting the macros to work just the way I wanted, but the software was infuriating.. Having done that, I'm very happy with how this remote works, and the WAF (wife acceptability factor) is high.
The remote gets 5 stars, but the difficult-to-use software brings this product down to 4.
