Others say...
"Will not display playlists on screen" So you want to hook your ipod to your home stereo system and see your playlists on screen? Forget it! There is no fuctionality to do this with the universal dock. I had to get to tier 2 support to get this answer, tier 1 apple support says you can.
The remote has a menu button that does nothing with your ipod... what??? come on apple! The onkyo dock (and others) has a functioning menu button at least.
It is hard to believe this product came from apple. Shame on you apple :(
"DO NOT BUY Universal Dock " Just got my 2nd one; still does not charge my Classic 160GB. Back to the circus of returning this turkey to Apple for the 2nd time. Forget it!
"Does its job well!" I was looking for a Dock that would work with my Iphone 3G , U2 Ipod, and Ipod Classic connected to my home stereo receiver. This little dock fit the bill perfectly. It only includes the an Apple Remote, the Dock and 5 dock inserts (no insert for the ipod 3G). I will have to buy a 3G dock insert sometime in the future if I want to use it, but for now my Ipod Classic will live in the dock. Yes, the dock does not come with any cables, but buy an inexpensive 3.5mm to RCA cable and you are ready to roll. The remote seems to bounce off my white wall and adjusts the volume and previous/next track from all angles. I know a lot of people have given it low reviews but it works great for me.
"Garbage" Not worth the plastic it's molded out of. This won't work unless you spend ANOTHER $50 on a component cable, available ONLY from APPLE. And no, no other cable will work, since the connection in the dock is proprietary. The cable, of course, is otherwise just a component cable identical to the ones they sell for $1 at radio shack.
This is a waste of money. Don't buy it unless you want an ugly piece of $50 plastic. It's not good for anything else.
"Not compatible with 3rd Generation iPod!" There are a lot of negative reviews, but it did seem as if the product would control basic playback, so I thought I'd try it. Bad choice!
I have an old 3rd generation iPod, and all I wanted was a base with a remote, recharge, and audio connect to my stereo - I want to dedicate my old iPod to the stereo now. The Apple specs claim that this product is compatible with 3rd generation, and you can even order a base plate of the right size. This base simply is NOT compatible. Why? The 3rd generation iPods only recharge from a Firewire charger, and the Universal Dock does not pass that voltage through - thus you can't recharge your iPod while in the dock. I would not call this compatibility. I found similar issues with 4th generation, too - not all USB chargers would work, although some would pass through the charge voltage. If there is some reason to not pass the Firewire 12 volt signal - then there should be a switch on the bottom that would allow that signal to be passed from the input to the dock connector. Then this might be a universal dock. Now it is only for new iPods.
I never tried the remote - what's the point. The old battery wouldn't provide much play time, so why bother.
So I think I'll try the iJet RF Remote Control for iPod with Dock Connector which supposedly passes through the signals from the dock - I still have my original dock (which doesn't have remote capabilities, but will connect to the stereo and Firewire charger.)

What our customer's say!
"It's not what you expect...", I understood the dock+remote would allow me to connect my iPod to the audio/video inputs of my equipment and control my iPod remotely. Well, it depends on what you consider "control the iPod remotely" to be. It does allow me to play/pause/skip, but it doesn't allow me to navigate the iPod menu. So, if you want to browse your songs/videos/photos, or if you want to switch from watching a video to listen a song, you need to reach for your iPod and use it. That restricts *a lot* the usefulness of the remote. (I don't understand how the other 2 reviews could be positive at all...)
"Disappointment", As most of the reviews state, the remote doesn't work the way you would expect (i.e., like it would on Front Row). This takes away most of the reasons to buy the dock. For the price, I would also think that Apple could have thrown in some kind of power supply. So, it's basically an iPod stand with a mostly dysfunctional remote. Bummer...
"It... works.", I upgraded to the Ipod touch from a Gen1 Nano. Needed a new Dock. This one works. Haven't tried to use the remote or anything because its plugged into my computer. If I need to play music, I have a hard drive full of it.
"Good Dock, Minimally Usable Remote, No Cable", Wow, some of the reviews of this dock are really harsh! Here's my experience:
I bought the dock first and foremost as a dock, i.e., so as not to have my iPhone sitting around loose on the desk using the standard cable. As a dock it works quite well - it's weighted and has a non-skid bottom. This is a universal dock (not to hard to figure out, given its name ...). What that means is that it comes with inserts that fit most Apple personal devices, and they are numbered and labeled in the clamshell box. Typical Apple attention to detail. I downrate to 4 stars as a dock only because it does not come with its own cable, especially irritating because the cable provided with the iPhone is rather short.
As a remote setup, this item has its limitations. You really need to remember, though, that a simple remote is not going to be able to do all the things the interface on your iPod or iPhone can, or do them in the same way. Some results are even a little unexpected until you get used to them. Still usable.
"Bad Apple", The previous version of this product had an S-Video output. This has none. You have to buy a $50 cable from Apple to connect it to a composite video source. Therefore, you have to choose between playing video or having the iPod connected to power. And switch between. S-Video is superior to composite, although modern LCD screens will appear much the same. IMHO, this is a complete step backwards that cost 50 bucks more. That's one bad Apple.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"A Joke!?", I agree with most of the reviews in that this is a useless product, but I don't see what the big video confusion is all about. The Dock clearly has an s-video out which will allow video playback using any cheap s-video cable. I understand the concern if you want to use component cables, but why would you buy Apple's composite cable? It doesn't make any sense. Use the s-video out and you'll get your video playback without buying any extra Apple cables. Additionally, a little common sense goes a long way. Why would a $50.00 Dock w/remote include a cable that in itself costs $50.00?
With that said, the fact that the remote doesn't work and that the docking station can't even charge on a wall outlet is absurd. There should have been some sort of AC adapter included with the dock. There are $50.00 clock radios with ipod docks that can both charge ipods and operate them with their remote, so what is Apple's excuse for these lack of features?
"Everything worked, included remote is great for third party apps as well", The Apple Universal Dock for iPod is typical Apple retail quality. Everything was packaged very nicely. This comes with several adapters for the different iPods on the market and worked right away with my 60Gig gen 5 iPod. The base is heavy enough to keep from sliding around, and the fit is excellent using the correct (included) adapter.
A bonus is the included Apple Remote which I was able to use with my Macbook Pro for the neat program called iAlertU, which is like a car alarm for your Macbook pro.
Overall this is a nice package if you're looking for an iPod dock and remote. It's Apple retail, so you know it will work and the fit-and-finish is excellent.
Pro's
-Apple Retail so it works with all their iPods -Base is heavy enough to remain stationary when plugging in and removing the iPod -It comes with the Apple Remote which can be used for movies, music, and some third party apps -Remote gets paired with your Mac, so only that remote will work
Con's
-A bit expensive
"Only Half of what Apple claims", This item does not control photographs as stated. Only music. Disappointing. Menu does not appear on TV screen.
"IPOD Docking Station", Bought this with my Apple Composite Cable. I like the dock. A little pricey, but what from apple isn't.
"Worst Apple Product Ever", First of all, I love everything Apple except for this product. The menu button on the remote has no function, what's that about? I purchased the conponent A/V cable which enables me to watch and hear my music and music videos on my HD TV. It works GREAT! The remote that comes with this docking station does not permit me to select the next music video after finishing playing one, totally unacceptable since that's why I purchased this unit in the first place. Save your money!!!
