Others say...
"BRUCE WILLIS FOREVER! NOW SUE ME" I'm a Bruce Willis fan and unashamed about it. I've enjoyed looking at his performances ever since he first tussled with Cybil Shepard in MOONLIGHTING. Seen all his movies, even that goofy musical he did with (of all people Joe Mantegna. Talk about self-indulgent! But so what. Self-depreciating's more like it. And don't you remember when, a few years ago, some movement hag pretending to be a movie critic objected to his masculine "smirk." His reply? I paraphrase: "Sorry, lady. That's the way I look." Truly, the man.
All right, his career's had its ups and downs. Fortunately, along came Tarrentino with the role of a lifetime of the Punchy boxer with more luck than sense, and Willis found his 'type;' that is, the type he could play, more or less safely, for the next decade or so, that of the bruised and battered old cop. It's his NYPD persona. And granted its played as well by Christopher Meloni as Elliot Stabler in the LAW & ORDER Franchise, Special, etc. And Meloni is good at it, no doubt. But Willis who began on the small screen, is now the certified big screen star. Anyway, here he is in a hi-budget action flick of first rank, with just enough plot to justify its baroque violence, and length. (It's about one six-pak in length.)
This is, for want of a better word, a Cyber-Punk adventure flick with MATRIX overtones and style elements. But tht's mostly greenish-blackish lighting in the opening segments, and a few 'quotes' from MATRIX, like the hollow knock on the hacker's door at night. But, whereas MATRIX took place mostly in the invisible land behind computer-generated appearances (the MAT RIX itself of Reality) DIE HARD doesn't do that. It's superficial in that it sticks with the realit y around (ourselves) and all the characters, and works within it to solve a magnificent computer hold-up scheme, organized and manipulated by a super-clever A-hole Hacker and his Eurasian Kung-Fu Killer chick. Only mentioning this because if you haven't seen it, you shouldn't be scared off by anything in the plot. It' all plausible. Nothing spooky or hokey.
Early on, Willis establishes himself as the "dad" of the story; that's the character he plays in t his series: a harried, worried scarred and petulent NYPD cop, divorced and living out of his squad car, who has an attractive but bitchy Mall Rat daughter who is anxious to test her sexual mettle. He spends time stalking her and scaring off her would-be boy-friends. One night, while he's doing same, he's instructed to find and 'bring in' a very important hacker (Justin Long). He obeys orders and finds the pale-faced, black-haired keyboard junkie in his electronically-cluttered loft. What neither he nor the kid now is that simultaneously there's a couple of pro assassin-types set to snuff the kid. They attack and the action begins. And, its well done, and followed by a number of other scens of differing type and increasing complexity which are in and of themselves, well done to say the least.
Long plays the young hacker as an immature but fundamen tally decent kid; smart, but insecure. As Willis/McLane drags him from city to city and crisis to crisis, the kid though reluctant, goes from scarcely bearable to acceptable, and they form a kind of bond. And then i becomes a BATMAN & ROBIN (or buddy) movie, but without tights, capes and super gadgets. We've seen it before: sometimes as a War movie in which a callow kid learns how to be a man on the battlefield under the tutelage of a seasoned warrior. Here it works out fine. Neither soupy or kitch.
The first great action scene is a kind of ballet of crashing cars that takes place in a traffic tunnel under mid-town DC, where McL and the Kid -- who are being chased and shot at from above by a helicopter -- find temporary helter. Basically two stunts, but awsome!
The next great action sequence takes place in a kind of Fed-Opeated/owned Computer Info Storage facility. Too complex to explain. Big. Multi-stories and filled with metal stairways, elevator shafts and conduits, ducts and cables. Perfect set for a lot of fast and dangerous action that terminates in a final stunt in an SUV hanging by a cable in an elevator shaft. There's Miss Siagon in a TRINITY latex outfit -- stilletos and pistols -- who's trying very hard to kill McLane. The escape reminds one of the escap from the lab truck hanging over he edge of the cliff in JURASSIC PARK. Beautiful action sequence. Double Wheu!!
And then, toward the end, Willis out-does (or tries to) Arnold S when he jumps on a low-flying jet fighter and... Well, you have to see it for yourself. It may not be believable, but it sure is while you watch.
Not going to give anything away. Only say this: its a very interesting multi-ethnic-looking movie, with lots of new or at least unfamiliar actors with very interesting faces. The location work is very realistic indeed, and the automobile crash ballet is fast, original and so dangerous looking you wonder the actors dared to appear in the scenes.
What more can one say? Everything is not Kirkegaaard and High Math. Sometimes you've got to loosen your belt and let yourself have some fun. This is as much fun as a good football game. Or (for me) maybe more.
Best dialogue exchange in the movie?
QUESTION: "You gonna threaten me in my own house?" RESPONSE: "You're gonna tell me what I need to know or I'm gonna beat you to death in your own house."
"Mac owners! Digital copy does not work on Mac" Bought the DVD w/the included digital copy only to find out that the digital copy cannot be downloaded to a Mac computer (work only on Window computers). I wished they had put it clearly in the description when you buy the DVD.
"I thrive on the ACTION!" A great Bruce Willis movie. Can always count on him to get the old pumper thumping!
"Good solid action movie " This is an entertaining movie, it's got some great stunts and good car chases. The violence has been toned right down but the film is still very enjoyable in a daft kind of way.
"Best of the Die Hards ..." Perhaps the best of the Die Hards ... Ive seen the other Die Hards many times over, over the years, and I cant watch them anymore; its just too drawn out ... this one I do like, a lot!!!

What our customer's say!
"Bruce Willis", My hubbby's favorite! Great price! Speedy delivery! Highly recommend! Thanks so much!
"Dying Hardest", Live Free or Die Hard is the flashiest and most outrageous of the Die Hard series but it has not lost the original candor and humor which makes the older three classic action films. Bruce Willis delivers a great performance that makes you forget his age and he's in terrific shape (if I'm in that good of shape at 50, I'll be perfectly content).
Everything in this film is slick and clean, though it requires a healthy suspension of disbelief to enjoy. It is the action film of the nerd, but the old-school cop delivering old-school justice to the villain wins out in the end, like all good Die Hard movies.
This movie falls slightly below Die Hard with a Vengeance, but only because Samuel Jackson is not present. The villains are great, and the femme fatale is stunning in every respect.
Buy it. Watch it. You won't regret it. If you know and love the old Die Hards, this one will be right up your alley. It's different in tone, less gritty, but still Die Hard.
"just as good as the original", I loved this movie and I can't recomend this one enough to any Bruce Willis fan or any fan of the series. you won't be disappointed with this one.
"Good as Die Hard 1", Die hard 1 is a classic. Die hard 2 & 3 just plain sucked! I didn't think old Brucey could pull it off again. Then as the movie progressed I found myself laughing more and rooting for him again as I did in the original. sure I would have changed a couple of unbelievable feats, but isn't that what movies are created for...to escape the real world! I wouldn't say this was better then the original. I would say it was just as entertaining. Im glad I bought it. I wont tell you the price cause I don't want my review to be deleted. But suffice to say I got the 2 disc version really cheap and it was worth every penny!
"My favorite Die Hard to date", Die Hard has always been one of my favorite movies but Live Free or Die Hard is my favorite of the 4 in the series. The action is nonstop, Bruce Willis and Justin Long play well off each other. The video and audio quality is reference. It is one of my favorite blu-ray movies. I wish they would have released the unrated version on blu-ray.

"Great movie", Bought the Blu-ray version. Great picture and sound. Typical Die Hard movie. Lots of action.
"Live hard or die free...or whatever", The 10 years later sequel to the Die Hard Series gets the whole Bruce Willis as Action Hero thing correct. Lots of crap blows up, plenty of rah-rah guy patriotism, new oddball sidekick, oily villain, and plenty of corny wisecracks from the mouth of John McClane. It's amazingly fast paced and a few of the stunts were wildly inventive (although the main ones are in the trailer). There's even a scene stealing cameo from Kevin Smith, playing the King Warlock of All Hackers.
The plot: Timothy Olyphant as a disgruntled ex-Fed out for revenge (and cash) against an inept Homeland Security that threw him out in disgrace after he kept insisting their computer system could be easily compromised. He secretly recruits a bunch of Uber-Nerds to crack - one by one - different security codes and then eliminates the hackers. Olyphant's Thomas Gabriel then sets about gleefully causing anarchy as the Government is exposed as inept and unprepared. It's up to McClane and Matt, the last surviving Super Nerd (Justin Long), to outwit, outlast and outhack Olyphant and his evil-doers.
That's the good. The bad is the usual hokiness (Olyphant's villain is totally without depth) and the overall implausibility of things (a stealth fighter plane being repeatedly unable to hit its target?). After three movies of not having children, John McClane suddenly has a daughter, Lucy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). She finds herself in the kind of ridiculous sub-plot peril that Elisha Cuthbert would stink up episodes of '24' with. There are a few nit-picky factual errors (there are no Yellow Cabs in DC, for instance), but that is something you'd only know if you were from there.
Overall, "Live Free Or Die Hard" runs its course with more flair than most, due primarily to Willis' memorable go at McClane. To the filmakers' credit, they didn't try to make him young again, which would have been a mistake. Other than the Lucy Subplot, everything stays on course, delivered with just enough suspense and humor to make it an enjoyable, better than average actioner.
"over the top", so much happens in this movie that its hard to stomach. if you do not have a good sound system or a half way decent televison you might be missing out. the stuff that happens to the main character of course would kill you or I but its a movie and its supposed to be high action so just sit back and enjoy it.
"Great story, good dialogue, but some overdone action scenes", In the sequel-dominated decade that is Hollywood since 1999's release of The Phantom Menace, it was only a matter of time before Bruce Willis put in another Die Hard flick. This time the bad guys are a collection of international criminals led by an ex-fed genius. The good guys are led by John McClane of the NYPD, his whiz-kid sidekick, and various feds. Like previous die-hard movies, we have lots of shooting, a gorgeous bad babe, some fistfights, and of course several helicopters, instead of just one as in the previous Die Hard movies. The evil chic is played by Maggie Q, though this time we have a lady on the good side, McClane's daughter. Much of the action takes place at night or in dark confines, so watch carefully or you will miss a lot of details. Still, worth the 2 hours to watch it.
"It's alright if you like these kind of movies.", Live Free or Die Hard starring Bruce Willis is the 4th installment in the Die Hard franchise. The last film was 15 years ago and John is still a tough as nails cop. Justin Long is pretty good as well, nice comic relief, always liked him on the t.v. show Ed. The stunts are pretty outrageous (that's a good thing), and the plot is intense, great music as well. I am not a huge fan of action flicks but this one is pretty entertaining, Die Hard 2 is the best in the series but Live Free or Die Hard shall make your aderaline pump profusely, enjoy!
