"audio cleaning lab 12 - The review"
I originally purchased vesrion 10 of Audio cleaning Lab to convert my cassettes into mp3's and i was quite happy with the ease of use and solid quality. So when my father asked me what he could do to convert his old cassette recordings to cd, i proceeded to purchase this software for him. Mind you he is older than me, so computer skills are not his strong suit, but i was able to show him how to start the application, how to record, clean and then rip onto cd.

what makes this software great is that it is all in one, record, clean and rip, what more could you want. Sure SoundSoap may be the better program, but at $200, i don't think so. Plus the cleaning process works great, it does a solid job of removing noise, hiss and vynil pops and crackles (though i keep mine in by personal choice) as well. also the auto marker feature is great, it automatically creates markers where tracks begin and end, which is what helps separate the tracks when you rip them to cd.

so if you have a vast collection of tapes you have collected over the years, get yourself this software and a good cassette deck and bring your favorites into the 21st century.

"Magix Audio Cleaning Lab 12"
The more I use this program, the more I like it. The documentation is poor so it takes a lot of practice to get good results. But I find myself using Audio Cleaning Lab 12 quite a bit more than I expected. I originally purchased it to restore a cassette tape from 1986 that had a lot of sibilance, which it was totally unable to correct. I had the cassette professionally restored, but found that Audio Cleaning Lab 12 did a fairly good job at removing noise compared to professional software. (Except for the De-esser feature. I'm still a little annoyed about that.)

For restoring old records and tapes, the most important feature is probably the "DeNoiser." If you're able to extract a sample of noise from a part of your song that doesn't have any music, the DeNoiser usually does a great job of removing the noise. If there's no part of the song without music, the DeNoiser can still sometimes do a fairly good job. But sometimes using the DeNoiser feature corrupts the actual audio.

With a little practice and patience, the "Spectral Cleaning" feature can work very well on individual noises. I've gotten great results removing large pops using Spectral Cleaning on sections of music that are fairly quiet.

The install program causes several problems. It screwed up the Windows XP CD Autoplay dialog so bad that Microsoft's own Autoplay repair utility couldn't fix it. Also, two shareware programs are automatically installed and have to be removed manually.

The documentation is horrible. The manual tells you all the great things the program is supposed to do, but doesn't explain clearly how to actually do them. The user interface is not intuitive at all, so without a well-written manual you'll waste a lot of time trying to figure things out.

Despite these problems, Audio Cleaning Lab 12 can be very useful for correcting certain problems and enhancing old recordings.

One really nice feature is that all the changes you apply don't affect the original file so you can experiment all you want. Overall, I'd say this is a good program for the amount it costs. Most old recordings can be dramatically improved with Audio Cleaning Lab 12.

What our customer's say!

"This program does the trick for my analog recording needs", I recently upgraded from Audio Cleaning Labs 2005 to version 12. I also use DAK Wave Mp3 Editor Pro, DAK Depopper, and DAK Recording Equalizer. My computer sound card does not recognize the DAK Wave Editor and thus I cannot record audio with DAK. I then bought the Audio Cleaning Labs 2005 program and my computer soundcard too did not recognize Audio Cleaning Labs. Then I bought a new computer with a Realtek 7.1 surround card and Audio Cleaning Labs does recognize the soundcard while DAK still does not. I thus record using Audio Cleaning Labs. Instead of recording with DAK, I use the DAK products to edit the tracks (WAVE Editor), remove the snaps, crackles, and pops (Depopper, a GREAT program), and adjust the levels (DAK Recording Equalizer).

The DAK depopper is a batch processor program while the Audio Cleaning Labs removes the pops and other miscues in real time. For about 95% of the time, the Depopper is WONDERFUL. It is much better than Audio Cleaning Labs. If I need to, I can go back over the remaining problems with Audio Cleaning Labs in real time.

The DAK product comes with a mini mixer. My Audio Video Receiver does not have a ground/ line in for a turntable. The mixer does. I run my analog audio out from my DVD player, my cassette deck, and my turntable thru the mini mixer and into my computer. This allows me to limit the often very strong audio signals with the mixer slider control before these hit my computer sound card.

You may wish to buy your own mixer. I have seen the DJ type mixer here at Amazon and on the web for $70 to a little over $100. Controlling the recording levels and the line volume levels is very critical and the mixer is a great help.

The Audio Cleaning Labs program has a ton of features. It is somewhat like Excel. I know how to use Excel, but if given a quiz, I would be fuzzy on 90% of the bells and whistles that are not important to me and I rarely if ever need to use. I use Audio Cleaning Labs to record my cassette tapes, my DVD audio out from my concert DVDs, and my vinyl LPs and turn these into MP3 and Wave files. The program is fairly easy to use and intuitive (even I could figure it out!).

The big improvement version 12 has over Audio Cleaning Labs 2005 is that I can record in 24 bit, 48 kHz instead of 16 bit 44.1 kHz. This richer level of recording is not as critical for pop/classic rock as it is for classical music. Classical music is much quitter than pop music. The recording levels are all over the map from too low to too high and back again like ping pong and setting them is not easy. The quality of the recording in 16 bit was poor. When the levels would spike and go into the pink or red (too high) there would be noticeable distortion. When they would drop out of the green and be too low the recorded sound on playback was hard to hear. Version 12 is WONDERFUL. I just recorded Beethoven's 5th and 6th symphonies (Rene Leibowitz, Royal Philharmonic c. 1961) and got near CD results. There is no noticeable distortion on the highs and the lows are audibly very easy to hear. I went from disappointing results with Audio Cleaning Labs 2005 16 bit recording to WOW! results with version 12 24 bit recording. I could not be happier with the recorded results.

Documentation and support:
I contacted Audio Cleaning Labs to get info on upgrading and never got a call back. Then they sent me an automated email 6 months or so later and I upgraded! It is only a $35 dollar program and this does not leave them much wiggle room as far as profit margins go. Do not expect that you are paying for high end support with your low end dollars. Maybe your audio card will not work with the program. I initially had this result with my old HP Pavilion but it does work just peachy with my recent Gateway computer with the Realtek card. There is a nice pdf manual and some video clips on how to use the program. I used to like having the manual hard copy, but then I would loose the hard copy. It is nice to be able to open the pdf file and search it for info on the features.

"MAGIX Support is Hopeless", Regardless of the merits or otherwise of this software (most of the features can be obtained by freeware programs), do not purchase this product if you expect support from MAGIX -- it is virtually non existent. Queries to MAGIX's website go unanswered for long periods of time, and when they are answered the responses are frequently useless. In contrast, other software producers I have dealt with are generally far more helpful than MAGIX.

(Since writing the original review, I'm still waiting on support from MAGIX. Without doubt, this is the worst company I've encountered for software support.)

"Idiot Proof!", I started with audio cleaning version 11 & found that it gave some trouble with windows vista compatibility. I discovered version 12 and found a few extra features to make increasingly easier to use and convert music. This is a very user friendly software and a good addition to the more advanced audio recording/ conversion user as well. Music editing is at your finger tips without having to open and close other windows just to edit and tag your music, wich version 11 didnt have.I use this software to actually record music from my digital cable provider converter box, as the music is already crystal clear and cd quality it provides limitless options as to whatever audio source you wish to record and/or convert audio to digital formats.
I recommend this for both the novice as well as the expert, and it's worth every penny. If this product was over $100.00 i would still buy it. Good job Magix!

"Conflicts with other software and neglibile support", There are three stages in the the process of converting vinyl (or cassettes) to digital formats. The first two were performed beautifully by this program. But then the problems ensue. If you have one of any number of CD utilities on board your PC (Roxio, Sonic, etc.), this program will not copy a track-divided and named digital folio. In fact, once you go to the Magix website, you find out that this is a regular problem. OK, so I uninstall Roxio and try again. Still won't work. But now, when I try to access other software, it is not available, nor can it be repaired. I'm talking about Quick Books! No tech support of any consequence at Magix. They send you a file to inspect your PC, and then days later, send back an email based on he results of the inspection format -- telling you that you should go to their website to see their knowledge base, (I did this within ten minutes of discovering the above problems.) So I contact my Gold Tech Support and after hours, find out that Magix Audio Cleaning Lab has made irrevocable changes to my operating system. End result: format my hard drive and spend a day and a half rebuilding my software. Before you buy, look at reviews online and discover the common failings of this program. Be afraid...be very afraid....

"Awesome audio", Audio cleaning lab is all I expected and more. It is easy to use for an inexperienced man like myself. It has so many possibilities, I am looking forward to using it as we convert 30 year old audio tapes to CD.
