"accounting helper" First, I need to qualify my perspective in evaluating this product. I have had and still continue my eduation in accounting. After, reading the mixed reviews about QB Pro, I decided to buy the product. After three weeks of working on QuickBooks, I find this a great product for anyone having a good education in accounting skills. This product makes it very easy to maintain the bookkeeping of a business. There is no need to make a receipt, record the transaction in a journal, post the transaction, then do a closing at the end of the day or the accounting period. QB does it all for you when you make the transaction. Of course you still have to carry your deposit to the bank. But, QB is working on doing that for you. For the business owner who has very little or no knowledge of accounting, QB takes care of that by giving tutorials and a coach to start working on your company, while teaching you at the same time. I've read the review about not having the freedom to change the form on receipts or purchases, not true. Once the information is inputted for a customer or vendor in the info fields, you have the option of taking that base form to a word processing program and customizing the form. I recommend this product. The reason I haven't given it five stars is because there is a Very annoying quirk in the program. If you update the program or upgrade, the company information is blocked, unless you go through the process of a restart and then uploading the backup copy of your company information, which takes awhile. And if you didn't make a backup copy, I don't know what to say, except make the backup right away. This is a bookkeeper's dream and an accountant's right and left hand.
"Good Software" Our old Quicken was getting rather inadequate for our small business needs, so our accountant recommended that our next update should also be an upgrade to the Quickbooks Pro.
After a few weeks, its use has been fairly similar to the Quicken software and no major learning curves involved. It does have much more extensive reporting options. My major concern though was the adjustment and ease of learning. So far, so good.
"A Nightmare to Enter Invoices" After spending MANY hours setting up what initially seemed to be a well developed accounting program. I discover that Quickbooks is a nightmare to use to enter an Invoice or sales order. - Relies on the user knowing the Item Code for every product stocked by the user company. - No facility to search through the Product items from a keyword box. - requires users to drill down through the list of items in a drop down box (could be thousands). - the drop down box to choose the item being ordered is poorly designed and too narrow to read more than the first few letters of the description and find the correct item. - the item list screen has the same problems. - Find Screen also uses the same narrow drop down box for Items, so you need to know the item code to use that also.
So Quickbooks is NOT FOR WHOLESALERS, or IMPORTERS or Distributors or anyone with a large number of items per invoice. NOR FOR anyone who wants to use it to enter sales orders or invoices efficiently.
Quickbooks Pro Professional Business 2008 is just laughable. It has not addressed this fundamental design floor after all these years. This company also had a specialized version touted for wholesalers in their higher end version with the same fault.
"New and Improved Quickbooks" They really raised the bar on this version. It is a lot easier to use and it makes more sense. It is much easier to add new employees and do payroll. Very nicely done.
"Unnecessary updates" I have been a Quick Books user for many years and the 2005 version suited all my needs, but then Intuit informed me it would no longer support business e mails with this version and as most of my estimating and billing is done this way I was forced to upgrade. I do not like the layout of the upgrade, nor the fact that I cannot back up onto a floppy disc, I have customized it as best I can, but I much preferred the 2005 version.

What our customer's say!
"Upgrade Was Worth It", I upgraded from Quickbooks Pro 2006 to Quickbooks Pro 2008. The upgrade was easy and I'm already using some of the new features in the new version.
"quickbooks ", Quickbooks has more than enough features for my business. My only complaint is I have to purchase a full new version every 3 years or lose features I use.
"Good product with a couple disappointments", Quickbooks is a good product that will improve the efficiency of my business, but I am disappointed in two aspects of the product. First is the import from Excel feature. I had assumed that everything I would need to import information from an Excel file would be built into Quickbooks Pro. Unfortunately I had to spend $150 on third party software to accomplish this task. I will say that Quickbooks does a good job of setting up a marketplace for its trusted third party vendors, and most of the vendors offer free trials of their products making it likely you will find something to do exactly what you need it to do.
My second disappointment is the lack of formatting available for invoices. Many of the invoices my business sends out are multiple pages, and a 5 to 7 page invoice is not uncommon. I wish I could format the way the page number displays at the bottom (such as "page 3 of 7" as opposed to Quickbooks default of "page 3"). Also, while the total price of the invoice does not display on each page the blank box for it does which is pretty tacky in my opinion.
I probably could have spent more on software that would have worked exatly the way I want it to, but I had severe budget constrains as upper management was under the impression that Excel was the best program to handle our bookkeeping needs. Finally, In spite of its pitfalls I will say that Quickbooks Pro is a great improvement (and a relatively inexpensive one) over our previous accounting "system."
"Quickbooks OK", After using a traditional accounting package (A/R, A/P, G/L, etc) for 20 years, Quickbooks took some getting used to. Quickbooks is actually more complicated than our former software but it's ok. The main reason for our using it is the cost.
"VERY different interface from 2005", I upgraded only because I had to for continued use of the email and online banking features, but I'm a very light user of the software. I don't use many of the features. I find the new interface/layout poor in comparison to the older one. Yes, I understand the whole "this is how everything is related" concept of the new layout, but I don't need to see it on my home page. I don't like that I have to go looking for my reminders. There is a link on the right but it drops down to reveal NOT your reminders but link to a window...What the hell is that about???

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Piece of Junk!!", I have used Quickbooks for over 12 years. This has got to be the worst version to date. I've learned to live with constant popups wanting you to buy Intuit services. My latest version was 2005. In December of last year I installed an auto update and it blew up Quickbooks. Everytime it would start it would try to do an install I would get an error (1602 or 17xx). If I kept canceling on the errors Quickbooks would finally start. I called Tech support and worked with them for over 4 hours. I was finally able resolve the issue by uninstalling, deleting some registry keys, deleting a couple of folders on the 'C' drive, downloading the latest update and doing a manual update.
The problem went away until the next auto update and it broke the program again. I called tech support again and they suggested I upgrade to 2008. Since support for 2005 was about to expire I purchased the upgrade. Everything went along fine during the install and update to the last release. Well I just got my 1st auto update and guess what it broke the program again. Now every time I try to run the program I have to go through an install process which takes ten minutes or longer. Once it completes the program works fine but I have go through the install process every time I start the program.
I use the program to track church expenses and budgets and quickbooks is a cost effective solution for this but I'm getting to the point where the aggravation just isn't worth it. Well back to tech support!!!
"ok software, HORRIBLE customer service", The software is ok and isn't too terrible to figure out, but getting through customer service is a nightmare. Just to install and verify the software, you have to call in and have a cs representative hassle you about which version you are using and try to sell you services you don't need. I am going to try Microsoft Office Accounting.
"It's a waste of time", this product is suppose to make your life simple, but in fact it makes you so complicated and you have to waste hours and days to figure out how to run this program, they have there weird way of programing and accounting how they feel necessary which in fact makes thing complicated and confusing, they don't recognize pay pal or Google checkout so you can't track your sales if you use those company's, in a nut shell this program sucks, and the worst part is that quick books charges $49.00 for 1 support phone call,
"I want my money back", I am not an accountant but have used the quickbooks pro 2006 without problems. The quickbooks pro2008 is much more complicated and is not at all intuitive. All the beginning balances set automatically at 0 even though my old program shows the correct balances. I have been waiting for days (literally) to get help for this problem. There is no customer support. I am through using quick books.
"Poor Quality Control", One thing that a lot of people have noticed about Intuit, and seems to be more and more true about the newer Intuit software, is that they have very poor quality control. They let their software get published with all kinds of rude bugs, ones that sometimes reduce the users to desperate situations just to get the software to work.
Take, for example, the install procedure on XP x64, which by now is a mainstream OS. When you don't have dot Net 2.0 installed, it will install it for you. That's nice, you say, but then did you know that the reason this program crashes on install most of the time is that the dot Net 2.0 that they have on the disk is corrupted? Didn't they try to install the program on a variety of systems that weren't set up with all of the software in advance?
Tip: Install Dot Net 2.0 from the Microsoft Website, as well as msXML, before installing this product, or you'll have lots of headaches trying to figure out why it won't work on your computer.
And then, when the software is finally installed, you have to register it. And if the web registration widget doesn't work, you have to call tech support to get a code. This is annoying enough, but then, they will disconnect your call, put you on hold for 5 minutes while they "generate" the code, and generally cause you to feel like you never want to have to do this again.
Some of the other problems I've had with Quickbooks in general, are that everything is so hard to navigate, and if you make a mistake in certain parts of your data entry, those mistakes carry forward until you find out about them, and have to undo a lot of work back to the origin of the mistake just to make the way payments are applied to the invoices come out correctly, or just to make the Sales Receipts deposit to the right account, etc. In fact, there is no way to change where to deposit a sales receipt at all, I learned, once it gets used in a deposit. (i.e., there is no "Un-Deposit"), so you have to void all of the transactions and start from scratch. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the way it seemed to me.
And instead of improving a lot of the features that were already there, they spent a lot of time and effort just making it look different so they could resell it. There isn't a lot different going on under the hood here, than say QB 2005, which I already owned.
If I was able to install QB 2008 reliably off the CD as is, I'd give it more stars, because that's why I bought it. But I was let down, so I give it only 2 stars for mismanaged software production and bad quality control.
A lot of people still aren't supporting Windows XP x64, and this software works, but only barely. Not what I call quality or an upgrade.
