"Great for Novice Users"
If you are looking for a self sustaining server to store your files this is real good. It was very easy to setup and get running.

"Great backup ans sharing solution for the Average User, slightly underpowered for tech savy users"
I have to give it to HP and Microsoft. This is a very good product. For those on the fence or not knowing why you would need something like this. How many pictures do you have on your computer? How about everyone else in your house? What about Music? What would happen if you lost a drive or computer? Would you lose everything? Do you do regular backups? How much time does that take? That is the reason for this product. This was designed to do two things, backup your computers and share media and files and it does it well.

The HP Mediasmart Server handles backups of all computers on your home and allows the ability to share all media. You install a small piece of software on each computer and each night, all of the computers are backup. No worries at all. This is the ultimate piece of mind.

With the huge communities at wegotserved.com and mediasmartserver.net, it is limitless what you can do with add-ins and hacks.

The reason for the 4 star review is I ended up returning this product. I like to tinker and it was a little under powered for what I wanted to do. I then built my own server and spent almost 3x the cost. For most people, this is adequate. A home server should not be tinkered with as you want it to be as stable as possible and this is just that.

For the price, you really can't beat this. This is highly recommended.

"Great server for home use."
This unit is much more feature packed than a typcial NAS device. A typical NAS drive allows you to put files on the drive, maybe will allow you to hang a printer off it, and that is about it. This unit does much more. It lets you remotely access your home PCs by acting as an RDP gateway, lets you remotely access your files (Pictures, Videos, Music) across your always on broadband connection. It allows you to set up user accounts with varying degrees of permissions. This means, that you can allow people to remotely access your files, but only have say read access, vs. full control (ability to delete files, etc). But you might be saying that you don't know how to set up your router to allow remote connections to the box. The home server will automatically set up your port forwarding through your broadband router via universal PNP. Inside the control panel, you just click on a button, and it will set all of the internals of the router as needed to allow remote access. (I have a Linksys WRT54G router, and this worked perfectly.)

Another nice feature of the box is that it will take nightly backups of any or all machines on your network. Once you install the software on your machine, the home server will back that machine up each night. If your machine is in standby or hibernated, it will wake it up, back it up, and then put it back to sleep. If your machine is off, then obviously it won't be backed up. Now, if your hard drive dies, you replace the drive, and then boot off of the Windows Home Server CD, this will allow you to connect to the home server, and restore your machine from the back ups that you had taken.

A lot of people are saying that the unit is overpriced, and that they can make their own Home Server from a PC. Yeah, they might be able to, but it isn't going to be as good as this unit. The nice features of this unit are, lower power consumption. The unit is nearly silent. The ability to add and remove hard drives. There are three extra trays in this unit. You can pull a tray out, slap in any size SATA drive without using any tools, and put the drive back in....all while the unit is running. The system will ask you how you want to use the drive, either as additional storage space, or for Windows Home Server backups. If you choose the space, it will use its drive extender technology, and add the space to your total drive space. What this means, is that if your drive is 500gb, and you add 500gb, it will now see it as a single 1tb drive...not two 500gb drives. If you choose to use the drive for Windows Home Server Backups, it will leave your single drive as 500gb, but use the other 500gb for mirroring folders that you want backed up. This is akin to RAID 1.

Some people say that they will use Windows Server 2003 to make a better home server, and again, I say it won't be as good as this unit. Sure Windows Server 2003 can do RAID. Natively, the unit can do RAID 1 and RAID 5 through the software...but the drives will not be hot swappable. If you build a Windows Server 2003 with a higher end RAID card, in other words RAID 1 or 5 through hardware, the card itself will cost more than this Home Server costs. Then you will get the ability to hot swap the drives provided that you have a server class chassis. And all of the data centers that I have been in, and worked with are pretty noisy. Most HP and Dell Servers sound like a jet engine when they first start up, and the quiet down to a dull humming....not something I would want in my family room. And even if you do choose to use Windows Server 2003 with either hardware or software RAID 1, you have to mirror the entire drive, whereas the Home Server lets you pick the folders that you want to mirror. So you can mirror say your music and pictures, but skip the video folder.

Overall, I am very pleased with the abilities of this little guy. The one bad thing about it is that it only comes with 512MB of RAM, which is light. But you can buy a 2GB stick of RAM and slap it in without voiding your warranty. Apparently HP was voiding warranties if you did this, but have since relaxed this. Another aspect which I haven't touched on, is the ability to install add-ons to extend the functionality of the server.

"Great Product, with a few upgrades"
The HP Windows home server is a great product that simplifies home computer backups, access and anti-virus protection. One thing that is needed on this unit is more memory and a faster processor. This is a great solution for home users. It is a very quite pc with very low power consumption.

"Another dead on arrival"
Unfortunately this one arrived with the 4 red error lights on the hard drive bays, like the 2007 Christmas review. HP support said to return it to the seller, who says to use the HP warranty. I might upgrade my review later based on more experience with the product.

What our customer's say!

"Excellent product", This product is excellent. I have it working with a 64-bit Vista computer, a 32-bit vista computer, and a computer running XP Pro. I am looking forward to the next update that will supposedly all it to work with Time Machine on the Mac. This is the best new Microsoft product I have seen in some time and HP's hardware is superb with plenty of room for expansion (and you can upgrade the RAM without voiding the warranty). Highly recommended.

"Excellent product.", I've been using Windows home server software with self-made PC for a year, and looking for a server specialized to WHS.
This product was released when WHS softwere was inroduced, but unfortunately only outside Japan.
I have decided to inport this personally and I strongly feel now it was a right decision. It's very easy to use and reliable. I am so satisfied with HP EX475. Fantastic product for sure.

"New models coming soon", This is an excellent product. However, I've been in the boat before when I order something, get it, and then find has just been replaced. HP is coming out with two improved Media Servers in a month or two (Feb?). They are high rated (beta reviews) - improved CPU, 2GB memory, improved software and funtionality, and better fit for Mac users.

"HP EX745 for $949.87????", Yow! 400 bucks OVER list price for an HP EX745 seems a bit steep to me. I hope it's either a typo or a bug...

"Like It Better Every Day", Was going to upgrade & re-use an older PC and just get the the Windows Home Server software. Glad I deceided to get this HP MediaSmart Server instead. It works exactly like it is adverised. Had one small problem loading the client software, that HP customer support was easily able to help me resolve (that was amazing in itself). Backups work great. Remote access was easy to setup and works great also. The more I use it the more I like it. If you have multiple computers in your house...and have ever thought about a home server, then this is what you want.

"Does just what i want it to", Works great, quiet. Bought with 2 640GB Seagate drives, which are cooler, quieter and less likely to die than the largest ones. I use the homeserver with Adobe Lightroom - I've redirected my Photos folder to the Server so that everything I do is backed up immediately, and i don't have to use 80+GB on my laptop for my photos.

"If you are running 64-bit Windows, you will have problems!", I recently purchased an EX470 and my initial glee upon its arrival has been somewhat dampened by the fact that you cannot setup the server if you are running 64-bit Windows client PCs.

The software discs supplied by HP with the EX470 will *only* run on 32-bit Windows, and both of our PCs are running 64-bit Vista.

The Microsoft Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 adds 64-bit client support to Windows Home Server, and this is available for download from the Microsoft Web site. However, to perform the initial configuration and to install this update along with other updates from HP you will need console access to the server, and you can't access the console from a 64-bit client in order to carry out the necessary updates....

The included server restore disc (to recover the EX470 in case of a drive failure, etc.) also only works with 32-bit Windows.

Oh well, now I'm going to have to wait to borrow a laptop running 32-bit Windows from someone so that I can configure and update the EX470.....

It would all be so much easier if HP had updated ISO images available for download which contained 64-bit client software.

The other issue I have had so far is that the MAC address isn't printed on the EX470. (Along with the existing serial numbers, etc. on the bottom of the unit for instance). It would have been a lot easier to setup on my network if I knew the MAC address beforehand!!

By the way, IMHO a really good choice of upgrade/expansion drive for this unit is the Samsung HD103UJ 1TB drive (32MB cache), which currently sell for around $105. We have Samsung drives running with RAID 0 in two PCs, a Mac Pro, a Linux box, and a hardware RAID NAS device with zero problems/drive failures.

It is also possible to upgrade the memory in your EX470/EX475 MediaSmart Server, which consists of a single PC2-5300 DIMM, from 512 MB to 2 GB. [...] is an excellent site for info.

"The good and the Bad of the MediaSmart Home Server.", The actual server is easy to set up. One problem during the install is that you no sooner get the software set up, with accounts then you get an update notice. A service pack installs, and you do the basic setup again. It also does not like Window Live.com for an Internet access site. I finally went with TZO but had to email them to get the one free year.

Getting it to work over the Internet is a different story. Takes 3 days (?) for TZO to set up your account. I am still writing back and forth to their tech support site. When I attempt go to my HTTP://(my site).hpshare.net I get redirected to a HP Product ad site.

I have the server connected to one wired and three wireless computers. The first back-up's take considerable time. Subsequent back-ups are quicker. All of the back-ups have worked well.

My major complaints are the setting up of the photo and music sharing. The products needs a real manual. There are websites that can be gotten to from TZO, but there is a lot of searching with trial and error.

One word of caution. Don't request the trial software from Microsoft. It is included in the package and their have been reports of Microsoft attempting to bill customers who have requested, but did not use.

"Quick and Easy", Out of the box, into the structured wiring closet, connected, up and operating without a glitch. If you need additional storage and the security of automatic system backup, this is a great machine.

"My take is, this is an around good compact home server for the price.", I purchase the EX-470 from Amazon about 3 weeks ago with and intend to warehouse my backups from multiple PC's in the house. I would say this server is far better than my expectations. You can not build a small MS Vista Server this nice. The box is small and quite, It sits on the back side of my desk with little noise and no vibrations noted. My recommendation is to take your time learning the features and functions, This is a very powerful versatile box from home users and learning and using all the functions takes times .... I have moved all of iTunes and MP3 libraries, work file backup and critical files from all the PC's in the house onto the server to allow the multiple PC's in the house access. I've fired up the Web options and can access my files from anywhere outside of the house on the WEB... I've linked up a couple of my friends and business partners to access Files folder I designate with Passwords as well as they can upload files into designated restricted folders I assign to them. Depending if you want to move into more options and support there is several nice Vista add-in software giving it more function as well as antivirus options.

If you going to consider using this as a Web access server I would consider adding more memory (the HP website now suggests the warranty is not voided with memory swap) And there is AMD processor upgrade available (This would void the warranty, but it is low risk). After about two weeks of running I swapped out the 512meg memory for a 2gb for about $30. There's a notable improvement in file movement. Then after a couple days I installed a new 2.6GHz AMD LE-1640 Orleans (45W) processor, besides mving from a 1.8 GHz increasing speed, it also increases the processor's L2 cache to 1MB (from 256KB in the Original AMD Sempron Chip). Both the memory and Processor swap out is very simple. This is the first time I've ever swapped out these types of items ... Piece of cake! No software changes and it can be completed in about 15 minutes using a #0 & #1 Phillips and a standard blade screwdrivers. Homeserverhacks . com has a lot of good information and illustrations to do this change.. The processor was about $45 and made a notable difference in access speed and file transfer time on my Gignet Router and as well on the PCs in the house that do not support Gig net yet.

I installed a Western Digital SATA II 1TB Variable Speed Drive "Green Drive" . Simple to install and the drive is very quite. The most notable difference is when you look at the temperature menu the Green drive is running 15 degrees cooler that the base non green drive. No notable response time issues with the variable drive speeds. This is the way to go I will only use these drive on the other two drive bays later.

I am not saying here this is a perfect server. But you can not come close to this package anywhere else. And the upgrade I did not note a required item... My take is this is an around good, compact home server. If you're looking for maximum storage capacity down the road! Think about purchasing the 1TB server to start off with, you will not have to endure the pain on software replacement down the road. I did not and I'm limited on one drive bay to the base 500GB drive for now.
