"Wonderful, but would be better with subtitles !"
Contrary to the description on the Amazon site, these 4 DVDs are not subtitled, even the number 1 disk.

That's my only regret as a French speaking customer.

But this personal inconvenience is balanced by the fact that the pictures are really wonderful.

I think it's one of the best documentary I have seen for a subject which is of deep interest for me.

Commentaries put the subject to the level that most people could understand these sometimes complex questions.

As for the language, even if there are no subtitles, it's not difficult to understand the narrator and the people interviewed with an average knowledge of English.

And the Beauty you see on your screen cancels all objections you may have.

I warmly recommend Amazon customers, even foreign ones like me, to buy this History Channel serie, which is difficult to find outside the US.





"Should have been called "The Universe for Dummies""
There are some interesting presentations in this series, and some stunning visuals. That's the only upside. The downside is, it was written assuming the audience are idiots - it's so 'dumbed down' that it's of very little information value - and there are plenty of factual inaccuracies that had me shouting at the screen.

If you already have even a basic understanding of the universe, watch this ONLY for the visuals, because you certainly won't learn anything from this series.

"The best DVD series about SPACE so far"
The information is up-to-date and interesting. The best thing about this collection is the three-dimensional computer graphics. They are amazingly beautiful and realistic. They makes me understanding the subject easier than reading the books. One computer graphic is indeed worth a thousand words and two-dimensional pictures! I gave it only 4 stars because of the 2 reasons listed below.

1. No English subtitles/caption except on disk 1. This is bad because there are many scientific terms I don't know. I can't search for them on the Internet because I can't spell them.

2. At least there is one location where the information is incomplete. I'm going to get more details about this and update it later.

"Great, except it's letterboxed."
Fantastic series, but if you have an HDTV, like many of us do now, your in for a disappointment. This set is presented in a letterboxed format which means on an HDTV, there are going to be thick black bars framing the image, not just that the top and bottom of the screen, but all the way around. I don't know what the distributer is thinking, this should have been presented in a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio. I hope they correct this on season two.

"Amazing!"
Anyone who is interested in the universe, space or astrology should definately buy this. Who would of thought that we are so small in this gigantic space we call the universe!

"For those who continue to question...", The episode on the Big Bang is worth the price just by itself. For anyone who ever wanted to know how "we" know what we know about the Big Bang, this contains one episode solely focused on that aspect. Yes, I too had learned most of this in grade school, but there are some who are not as fortunate (or need a refresher). Neil DeGrasse Tyson's quote at the end of that episode is priceless...

"Stink Bomb", This series is what I like to refer to as a 'Dime Bag' documentary. In true History Chanel format, this series foregos intellectual content beyond adolescent levels, opting instead to work in as much sensationalism as possible. For example, a chapter entitled "The Most Violent Places in the Universe", threatens repeatedly that Black Holes are "Out There.. Prowling the darkness". The series is packed with this kind of crap, and it seems the History Chanel would have you believe that something out there in the dark, scary, violent, universe holds some aganizing death with your name on it; Be it torn to shreds from 'Prowling' black holes, Crushed by a meteor, or violently engulfed by the sun, etc. Seemingly, many topics touch on the violent nature of your demise should you venture too close, be in the wrong place at the wrong time, or be wearing a lose neck-tie.. whatever. If you want to sink your teeth into something with some meat on it, I recommend "Steven Hawkings Universe", where the only sensationalism is in the amazing facts and details presented on topics such as the infinite density of primortial matter comprising the 'singularity' from which the universe and all elements of matter were created. The great deal of thought provoking subject matter had me walking around in a daze for days. As for the History Chanels Universe..Everything in it, you should have learned in elementary school. Buy it for your kids maybe.

"The Universe - Complete Season One", Great synopsis on the study of Universe. Compiled eloquently and at levels keeping young kids interested in the subject.

"Want to know more about the (real) BIGGER PICTURE ? ", Then, sit back and relax. Both entertained and educated you will be, with the time passing so quickly. I learned about the universe poring over many
encyclopedias "in the day" - what joy it is to live in this Millenium to enjoy the latest scientific findings about the universe around us!

"yes, it has subtitles!", I LIKE SO MUCH THIS SERIES AND BECAUSE I SAW ONLY 2 OR 3 ON TV, I WANT TO PURSHASE THE BOX, BUT COMMENTS SAID THAT IS NO SUBTITLES OR CC, I WAS AFRAID OF THAT BUT I TAKE THE CHANCE, AND THE REAL TRUTH IS: YES IT HAS CC, I DON'T KNOW WHY THE OTHER PEOPLE DON'T SAW, MAYBE THE TV. "The Universe - The Complete Season One", Wanted to Know Before Purchasing Product: On the Amazon Web site it says that the audio is English and Spanish. I have received the video and there is no Spanish Audio. Otherwise the series is spectacular.

"Excellent graphics and current/ up-to-date information", This series is a bargain for the great information provided. Entertaining and educational, "The Universe: Season One", is an earth science teacher's best way to show the latest CGI effects of the most up-to-date information regarding our observations and inferences of outer space.

"Universe - Excellent Series", The test of an excellent program is how well it can keep the attention of a group of high school students at 8am in the morning. The Universe series exceeded my expectations in the thoroughness and clarity of its explanations. The visuals and the lack of long stretches of "talking heads" keeps the viewer's attention.

"The Universe set it awsome", It was very informative and entertaining. I can't wait for the next season to be released.

"Una edición no muy buena", El DVD viene en formato 4:3 y no 16:9 como están grabados los programas, la calidad no es tan buena como se esperaba.
