"Dissapointed by a locked up unit", Well someone has to get the bad units and judging by all the refurbished units on the market I would guess these have a higher then normal failure rate. I purchased ours a little over a year ago and we haven't it used much. It has probably been powered on less then 50 times total. Yesterday the little guy locked up and despite trying to use the reset button and even letting the battery fully discharge it is stuck on the intial TOmTom screen everytime it powers up.

When we did use it the maps were easy to follow and it would get us to where we needed to go but the routes were not always the most direct and even when I would have thought the next obvious route would have been the second choice when hitting the recalculate route button, that was not the case. Often the recalculated routes would take you far out of your way and miss the obvious choices (like main highways leading directly to your destination). So even if you were to discount my one star rating as coming from a disgruntled owner of a bad unit, I would have given this unit only 3 stars if it were still working. I have an entry level Garmin and like that a little more. Even at just over $100 dollars per unit I have an expectation it will last more then 50 power up cycles.

"Christmas gift", We had purchased a Tom Tom One GPS unit for ourselves a year ago and have been reasonably happy with it. So when our daughter wanted a GPS unit, we elected to get the Tom Tom One 3rd edition for her as a Christmas gift.

"Tom Tom GPS Review", excellent product, bought as gift for daughter who's always on the road. she loves it.

"If you want a beginner GPS, this is what you need", My wife and I just got home with this device, and we are amazed. We feel this will greatly simplify and enhance our travel experiences.

If you are already a GPS user, you may want something fancier. So far I have found that you can only plan one point of interest in a trip and I have found some of my favorite stores, mostly small or specialty businesses, that are not included with the points of interests. Since the device is inexpensive, it fails to offer an SD slot for more memory. It also cannot play mp3s, display photos, or anything else that is fancy.

For basic or beginning users, purchase this unit. Allow me to espouse the great things about this device.

SIMPLICITY The Tom Tom One had the easist to use navigation menu of any device I looked at. The menu is ran completely with the touch screen and my wife and I can both use it with ease. When you first turn the unit on it asks you to set your home address and choose your settings. A cheaper version that my father received for Christmas took him an hour to figure out! The screen is extremely visible with vibrant colors and great brightness. It locks onto a GPS signal almost instantly. Setting a route to a destination is simple. If you are wanting to return to your home, you need simply press 2-3 buttons on the screen. To get to a point from your current location, simply add a few steps by entering an address or choosing a point of interest.

FUNCTIONALITY If you have a favorite store, friend, family or other location, you can easily add the location to your favorites with a name of your choosing and that makes sense to you. If you have ever added a Internet site to your web browser favorites, you can do this and love it. The internal memory contains tons of points of interest from hospitals to restaraunts to shopping centers that you can easily search. You can search for these by points nearest your location, points along your route, or points near your destination. The voice prompt is loud and easy to hear. You can even set the volume to increase as your driving speed increases. The settings allow you to customize the screen to show what you want to see such as a compass, points of interest, remaining time and remaining distance.

As much as I love this device, I caution anyone to be aware that this device will meet all of travel needs. Browsing a map is not easy, so I will probably still print and study Mapquest maps of any area at which I will be staying. If you want to visit multiple locations on a trip, you may still need to make a list of addresses you want to visit. Since I don't trust the device's list of points of interest to be as comprehensive as I would like, I will definitely google things I want to do in an area.

However, it will be very nice now to locate gas stations or restaraunts that are near our hotel or along our route. As a hater of driving in big cities, I also think we will be more adventerous and willing to venture into large metro areas.

So in summary, you couldn't do much better for an inexpensive and easy to use GPS device.

"Good Software, Bad Maps, Horrible Hardware and Support", This is my first product review ever, so I must be pretty mad. This GPS has a nice software interface, but the maps are horribly out of date. Sometimes I will follow a highway and the map does not even recognize that the highway is there (location: Texas). About one year into using this device it started having trouble with the LCD screen. The screen would be almost white at startup and then eventually warm up to where I could use it. After talking to customer support they told me to update the unit. Well, it would not update. So they told me to format it. It would not format. So the unit is one month out of warranty and it was functional when I called customer support. Now it does not work. At least Microsoft admits their errors and fixes the Xbox.

BUY GARMIN. I have one and for the most part it is infinitely better. It gets me to my destination!!!!!

"TomTom One 3rd Edition ", First time using a GPS unit, found the TomTom to be easy to use. I have learned in a short time, to listen to the directions TomTom offers. Not knowing about GPS's system I wish I had purchasing a TomTom with more features. Still very pleased with this unit.

"Tom Tom Terrific", We purchased a Tom Tom prior to our 2200 mile journey through California, and I have to tell you, it was marvelous! It's very easy to use, saved us a lot of time looking through maps, and made driving through LA a dream (well, almost). One unexpected delight we discovered this past weekend while driving from Santa Barbara to Northern California was that under "points of interest" you can actually type in a destination(like Starbucks or B of A, for example) and it will actually provide a list of these locations to choose from!

You have many choices of voices, and we use the British female voice whom we choose to call B@$^ch Betty. She is very astute and warns us well in advance of any turnoffs.

Highly, highly, highly recommended!

"A Waste of Money", The Tom Tom is easy to use. That's the only good thing about it. The maps will get you close to where you want to go, maybe, but don't count on it. They are the absolute worst maps and are unable to locate very well known places. Even after down-loading Best Western Hotels, and Denny's restaurants, it can't find the ones you want and know are there. My advice, don't waste your money!!

"Can't complain", I bought this for my wife for her birthday and she says it's great. Very easy to use.

"Great Value for the Money", My wife gave me one for Christmas last year -both for use in the U.S. and in Canada (as we were headed there the following June). Fantastic little device. I don't know about the prblm someone posted with not getting a free map upgrade after a week- mine was updated over a month later, even though I'd checked when I first got it, at no charge.In fact, I've been so satisfied that upon having to come to the U.K. for 6 wks -and drive (where in the past, I took taxis), I ordered one via Amazon.co.uk and had it delivered to our offices there. My first day at work, I rode w/ someone and picked up my TomTom. (Although, I have had some occasional problems here w/ the time required to get a "fix" when first switched on.) I first was going to just buy the UK/Euro maps for my original, but the cost of buying maps when TomTom isn't running a "special" is pretty steep. I decided it was cheaper to buy a whole unit at a discount, have it delivered instead of carrying in my bags, and then I didn't have the hassle of unloading/loading btwn the N.America and the UK/Euro maps. I don't at all regret the decision. I've gone many places at will that I'd not have if I had to take the time to figure it out on my paper map (which I do have). And it makes dealing with detours for construction, accidents, etc. MUCH easier. Not to mention when you're driving to city centre and can't park near where you'd plan to go, and can use TomTom to find another car park, AND find your way back to it readily when you're done.It's not perfect, and you should have a hardcopy map as b ackup. As for travel time estimates- well, that depends on what time of the day, day of the week, month of the year (shopping days, for instance) and whether there are bus or subway strikes and the like. But it DOES update the ETA as you drive.It's not got the huge displays and full audio (doesn't say the street name of where you are turning) like those costing 3 to 5 times as much -but it works, and at this price, you don't have as much to lose. Gave one to my niece who moved to med school at U of Cinci -she thought it was the most fantastic grad gift -something very useful, gadgety, and not something she'd have spent her own money on.
