"Complete Security Without Thought of Or Concern For...."
McAfee is a complete, self sustaining, non-worrisome package of security power devices rolled into one, big protection service!

I have it!

I love it!

I'd not be without it!

"Too much bloat "
It's ok but compared to other anti-virus products it's just to resource intensive and unintuitive. I use AVG free and it suits my needs. I would probably recommend this product to people who aren't very PC savvy but for me, it felt like a step backwards compared to other programs I've used.

"Works great, but sometimes a bit slow. "
I have used a bevy of virus scanners/protectors ranging from Symantech, avast, norton etc. I even used a previously released version of Mcafee a few years back. I am happy to say that this product stand up well against its competitors.

It is fairly easy to use and can be used by up to 3 users. It has all the standard features as expected from most virus scanners. However, the only downside to it in my opinion is that when rebooting your computer, this thing really slows down the process. And while it can be run in the background and designed to do so, it seems at times to impede the speed of performance of other programs.

But other than those points, it is still a great buy.

"slow, buggy."
I find this product to be slow and intrusive. Maybe because it tries to do so many functions at once, but my computer runs noticeably slower, especially at start up. Furthermore, my windows xp tends to crash more often. I'm not a professional software tester so I can't attest to the efficacy of the virus detection. Compare to some other products that I've used, I find this product no better than some of the free options such as AVG.

"McAfee Works For Me"
I'm not much of a computer geek, so this review will be relatively short compared to my other reviews, I just want to say that my computer has been plagued by spyware for far to long. Almost none of the virus protectors worked. So far McAfee is not perfect, but it's accuracy in stopping viruses before they get to my computer has been much more generous then I'm used to. As a result my computer is running better, so I guess you can say I've found my new spyware program.

What our customer's say!

"Norton's Better", McAfee Virus Scan isn't really free with purchase because the catch is that it is only free for the first 60 days. After that, you need to pay to get the service for a year of updates. What gives? If I pay for something shouldn't it be free after that? Stick with Norton you'll be happier.

"An improvement over previous version", I should start by mentioning that I have never really liked McAfee's software. It has, in the past, tended to be bloatware, much like Norton's products: unnecessarily large (in terms of memory usage), too intrusive, etc.

This version might change my mind, though I would add that I am not planning on giving up my Kaspersky Internet Security Suite anytime soon- it's too good. Installation of McAfee VirusScan Plus went well, it installed quickly and cleanly. The software itself is generally intuitive and elegantly designed. Now I am not a virus lab, and did not run controlled tests to see how many viruses this software caught, but McAfee has generally had a good reputation in that department. The 24/7 live update of virus definitions is great, though I suspect this feature is or should be standard on all virus/security suites. I also like the ability to install this on 3 computers- many of us have more than one PC, and this makes sense.

Overall I recommend this antivirus as one of the best McAfee products in a while. Personally, I prefer the aforementioned Kaspersky software as an all-in-one solution (Firewall, Antivirus, Antispyware, etc), but for those looking for only a antivirus, give McAfee a whirl.

"You can't beat the price after rebate!!", I have been using Norton on all my machines, however am open to change. The software was easy to install and seems to move quickly on my machine.
It certainly does perform as advertised thusfar, and doesn't seem to slow my machine down. I am using it with Vista. You just can't be without antivirus protection these days, and for the money(even full price), this is a nice product.

"Very slow and makes your computer freeze", This product was frustrating for me to use. I have been a user of Norton Internet Security for about 3-4 years, and decided a few weeks ago to switch to McAfee upon expiration of my Norton subscription because Norton has become more and more expensive to renew. I installed via CD, which took much longer than I thought it would (I think it was an hour). I like the automatic updates very much, but scanning the computer is a whole different issue. It seems like it takes the entire day just to scan my computer. With Norton, I could scan my computer in about one hour! And eventually, it ends up freezing my computer, so that even when I pause scanning, I have to restart the computer. And if you pause the scan, there is an annoying message that pops up every 15 minutes that reminds you to return to scanning, and there seems to be no way to turn that off! Overall, I don't think this product is as well designed as Norton, but Norton definitely charges too much for their products.

"Easy +3", A very easy to install and manage anti-virus application. McAfee has long been passed off as a "wanna-be" anti-virus software, and has slowly been making its way up to the top. With the release of the new VirusScan Plus, its making itself a real contender in the tight competition out there.

Although it lacks some of the more complex features of the more traditional business protection solutions, it stands out in simplicity of use, updating and protection from hackers, viruses, spyware and safe internet surfing with the included SiteAdvisor software -- all of which is perfect for the casual at-home internet user.

This installation was quite simple; taking about 10 minutes, and gives you the option to install from the CD or downloading the latest from online. Depending on your download speed, I would recommend installing from the CD and then updating later from the main McAfee control panel. Updates were a cinch, and protection was automatically turned on by default. Another great feature to note -- which seems to be more common as of late -- is the ability to install the protection on up to three computers.

Overall, McAfee has done a great job with its latest release, and if you need a simple solution to your internet woes, without killing your PC's performance, and native support for Windows Vista, then look no further.

"Too confusing for the money.", Although McAfee is seems to be very popular, I have always known it to be a resource hog, just like Norton. And I have never purchased one subscription because for this reason. But since it was on Amazon Vine, I thought I should give it a shot to see just how much improvement is offered in VirusScan Plus 2008. Take into consideration that I have been happily using Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0. You will see comparisons made between those two products.

Although McAfee remains conservative when idle, it uses up to twice the amount RAM when scanning compared to Kaspersky. However, scanning time was 33% faster than Kaspersky.

I do not know anything about Virus and Spyware detection rates because I don't know how to perform them. I would say that I did not get any viruses, but I almost never get them anyway. Remember that half of the battle against security breaches is personal responsibility. However, I did pick up on some settings that made me think that out of the box protection is not good enough. Some settings that allow you better protection are not enabled by default such as having the firewall protect you during startup. Also, the Firewall is on Lower Security Level by default. Although that security level is non-intrusive, Kaspersky goes the extra mile by giving the option during installation if you want an intrusive firewall or not.

How easy is it to use and configure the program to your liking? While initially appearing organized, similar to Windows, playing with it reveals the mind-numbing complexities, especially if you want to configure it yourself.

Instead of the interface having an organized path or hierarchy of settings to configure, it seems like it is a bunch of things glued together. There is too much structure in the menu system. If you want to configure a feature, it has multiple options. Some of these have advanced settings which also have multiple options and tabs. Trying to wrap my head around all the paths and finding a logical progression is mind numbing.

The top menu of the advanced menu looks different from the basic menu, which made me think it is different but is actually similar. The advanced menu has features that I do not care about nor do I think the average Joe would, which brings another element of confusion.

If you shut off a service that you do not need, McAfee bothers you by saying you are not protected and clutters the task bar by putting an extra icon in it. I do not require E-mail and IM protection. They should reserve those annoyances for more important features of the program.

Some features of the program are not installed during the main install and have to be installed later if you want to use them. It is inconvenient that I have to install them separately and makes me question how important those features really are. In any case, it leaves me thinking my security is not complete.

It takes forever to check for updates and does not communicate much other than the fact that it has not crashed. This is similar to the progress bar during scanning which is just an animation going side to side with no indication of ever ending.

The help system is not as convenient or as helpful as Kaspersky. Kaspersky takes you to the help file of the configuration screen you are viewing unlike McAfee, which saves a lot of time. It is confusing to have the Help menu is in a different location in the advanced menu like it does. Looking at the help file of the Firewall Security Levels is no help because it has many options that do not seem very different from each other. I'll go crazy before I realize what must be extremely subtle differences between each level. The EasyNetwork feature does not have anything to do with protection according to the help menu, but when you try to remove it, the dialog box says that it is important for protection. I am confused.

Some windows cleanup tools are located in one location for your convenience. But it is missing some important features such as Hard disk checking which makes this incomplete.

McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008 is more headache than convenience. It is too unfriendly to configure and understand the program. For an extra $5 you could get the much better Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0, which I highly recommend for ease of use and peace of mind.

"Decent but Pointless", This product, although not a bad one, really doesn't serve much of a purpose. There are plenty of FREE VirusScan programs out there that actually work better and don't slow down the computer.

AVG comes to mind as a better program for virus protection, and that takes up less room and costs absolutely nothing.

If you're a fan of McAfee, this is a fine program, but if you'd rather take a smarter, cheaper route, I would recommend you look elsewhere.

"Work great if you have enough machine..", There is no questions you will need some kind of virus protection if you are running Windows in your machine. McAfee software will definitely do the job. But I think any of the major ones would be sufficient.
McAfee software is installed easily on my Vista laptop. But after a reboot, I started noticing my laptop started running sluggishly. I have a HP with AMD Turion and 2GB of memory, so it is not a dog by any mean.
The thing is, it is hard to tell how well your virus protection software is working, after all its role in life is running in the background and intercepting bad stuffs that came from the internet.
My thought: Recommended, but you will need at least 2GB of memory for an average machine.

"Change We Can Believe In", I've been using Symantec/Norton security software exclusively on all my PCs and Macs for at least a decade. This review pertains to the PC/Windows environment only.

Over the past few years I had been noticing system slowdowns that seemed to be related to things like auto-download and installation of frequent updates of virus definitions. I figured that's the price I'd have to pay to keep my PC and data safe. I've been reading over the past year or two, though, that McAfee users seemed to feel the software and updates didn't bog down Windows (XP) as much.

After installing this software via the included CD (I much prefer buying software online these days...personal preference), I did a few startup tests to note extra delays (McAfee definitely loaded faster); virus scans to monitor speed (no viruses here, fortunately), and made sure to monitor an online update/download while my PC was running 4 or 5 other applications, the way I usually work. I heard some disk activity but barely noticed a slowdown in the other processes.

I'm going to stick with it for a while, especially since this comes as a 3-user pack, but I hate the idea of wasting the 200+ more days of Norton virus updates I already paid for. Also, the McAfee scans did drive home the welcome realization that the Norton/Symantec software I had been running was doing its job pretty darn well. On the other hand, I'm certainly willing to change at this point.

I think what I'll do is run McAfee for a while on my main desktop machine and Norton on my main laptop. We'll see if a change is in order...or whether it really matters one way or the other.

"Bogs down my system", I installed using the CD method and it was fast and clean.
I did a scan and it found 20 problems and corrected them all except 1. I had issues with a program called PRCviewer. I did some research on it, and finally told the software it was okay. I first tried to delete it, but it just kept coming back up.

I turned on the Site Advisor but it gets aggravating. If I was doing it again, I would leave it off, unless I visited a lot of unknown sites.

I didn't restart my computer after I loaded it and it seemed great.
However, on restarting my computer the next morning, my system was jerky. When I would scroll down the page on a forum, there was a long lag. Not knowing for sure if it was the McAfee software I uninstalled it and sure enough it was the software. I have a decent computer that I put together myself, so I don't know what the issue was. I had the same problem with Norton. I reinstalled my free Avast antivirus software and it works like a charm. It doesn't have as many bells and whistles but it works.

I have an Intel 2.80 ghz CPU with Intel motherboard and 3.0 GB RAM. I also have DSL broadband.
