Others say...
"Rosetta Stone V3: French, Level 1, 2 & 3 " I had an extensive previous knowledge of French but had not used it in many years. I plan to travel to France this summer. I have found using Rosetta Stone quite enjoyable. I am about half way through level 2 and about 95% has been review. The method of instruction is excellent as it involves hearing, speaking, seeing and writing. The voice recognition software is very good. After completing level 3 I plan to go back and redo the pronunciation and speaking sections with a higher level speaking criticality. The levels range from 1 through 5 with 3 being "normal." I am currently using "3".
I will probably use Rosetta Stone to learn a language that I don't already know. I think it will be fun as well as effective.
"Great if you learn this way" This is terrific software, and truly immerses you into the French language. It is easy to use, and the graphics well done.
The most important thing to keep in mind, though, is that this software will only work if you personally learn using an immersion system. As a neuropsychologist who specializes in learning theory, I can clearly state that the immersion method does not work with everyone. You should try the free lessons Rosetta Stone offers on their website before purchasing.
Some people learn faster, and retain their knowledge better if they use the standard rote memorization system (such as the Living Language system). Others learn better using the immersion method.
Some caveats to keep in mind after having worked through about 10 lessons (I already speak fluent French, but wanted to know why my partner was having such a hard time with this software):
- The lessons are boring -- it repeats sets of 4 words over and over. They system only works if you use all of the modules for each lesson -- read, recall, write. This is extremely tedious. The more tedious it gets, the easier it is to "cheat" i.e. just quickly look at the first photo that you know matches and click - no real learning is happening then. - None of the language that you learn in the first level will be anything you really use in real-life in France -- sure, it is developing concepts, teaching you sounds and cadence, numbers and colors -- but there are very few people who will ever have to say "the horse jumps" or "the boy is under the airplane", or "the man fell off the horse" -The basic lessons do not teach you any day to day conversational french, nor how to say hello, goodbye, or order anything on a menu -Finally - there is nothing here to take with you -- everything is dependent on the software, there are no printed lessons, translations, or lists to put in your pocket and review for memorization purposes. You better buy a good French Dictionary while using this system, since you WILL need to look up some of the words -- not all of the photos are intuitive enough to tell you what they are talking about.
The lessons DO help you to "think" in limited French -- it will not help you listen and understand others without substantial additional work using other materials.
Overall, these are great very basic French lessons -- but many users will be better off with a standard text book.
"Great Software - One Deficiency" Maybe I'm too old to learn by using the straight immersion method. I don't know.
I have always been fascinated with words and language and recently decided that at 51 years of age, I need to learn a second language (I have never had any foreign language training before).
I looked and read reviews and talked to some people and Rosetta Stone stood out prominently as the best software to use so I purchased Rosetta Stone V3: French, Level 1. The software is awesome! It makes complete sense and is very intuitive. I absolutely love it.
The problem is that I have hit a point where I simply can not figure out what the words refer to. I'm stuck. I don't know what to do. The help doesn't help and I'm still stuck. The computer I am learning on is not on the internet so I can't even go online to figure it out.
This software needs only one thing to be perfect. It needs someplace in help that provides translations of the words and phrases it uses so that someone like me won't get stuck.
I have ordered an English-French/French English dictionary and a phrase book that should arrive tomorrow so I can continue my learning. I am surprised that I needed these but there it is. I intend to learn French and I will get the tools I need to do so. Rosetta Stone should have provided ALL the tools needed and not left this piece out.
"Two computers loaded successfully" After purchasing this product, I called tech support and was told that I would be able to load this program on two computers. I did so successfully and have been able to switch back and forth from my lap top to my desk top.
"A Great Way to Learn a Language" Before purchasing the Rosetta Stone, I had studied 3 different languages. I am quite fluent in both Japanese and Spanish and terrible at German even though I studied it for 4 years in high school. I wanted to learn French and started with the Rosetta Stone course. I am thoroughly impressed with the way they present and structure the lessons. I look forward to going through a new lesson. It's enjoyable and very challenging. You really notice improvement right from the start. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn a language and be able to communicate with others in that language. After all, isn't that the reason that you learn another language? The old approach of learning tedious grammar and verb conjugation just doesn't work. This immersion approach, which is often referred to as a Natural Language Learning model, is the most natural and effective way to learn a new language. You won't be dissapointed.

What our customer's say!
"Caution - Defective Disks - No Support", Devoid of Manufacturing Quality : I purchased all 3 levels for the $500 and tried to install it over the weekend. The Language Level 1 disk would not install - my computer drive made horrible noises. The other levels installed just fine along with the program disk so it wasn't my computer.
Surprise - Rosetta Stone has NO human support on the weekends!! I sent an email via the web site & then called Amazon. Thankfully, AMAZON does. The replacement product arrived today.
Unfortunately, the same problem occurred again. (There must be a bad batch of disks.) Called Rosetta Stone this time & tech support said that a new disk would be sent out in 3 to 5 days. I asked for it earlier because of a deadline. Plus starting in the middle didn't seem to be a good idea.
Rosetta Stone Customer service advised that since I did not purchase the product from them I would have to go back to the retailer. I tried to explain to this person that this was a defective product & covered by manufacturers warranty to no avail. I asked to speak to the supervisor and was told that they all go home at 5:30 PM - there was no one there.
I've spent the $500 to get a defective product that the manufacturer will not honor. The customer service of Rosetta Stone is some of the worst I have ever encountered! While Amazon has been great, it is still my time spent trying to get what I paid for.
Content: In between all of this, I did try a few of the level 2 lessons. I'm not sure why everyone is raving how good this is - if I hadn't taken French in high school (many, many years ago) I would be totally lost.
I have purchased a CD based course locally, Barrons Mastering French, Level 1. So far I really like that. Also, it was only $80.
I think the Rosetta Stone fails to deliver on all counts - content & quality. This would be a definitely NO recommendation.
"Worth the investment", I hesitated for a long time purchasing these, but is well worth it. In the short time I have had it I have learned more than multiple years of 'traditional' language instruction. This teaches you how you learned your first language, it does get repetitive and sometimes you are not sure what it wants (it will prod you along). I find that I think in the other language rather than trying to translate in my head which is much easier.
"Best learning course", I found this French course interesting and fun to use ... and not as hard as i would have thought . Having the pictures of items and then being taught the word makes it easy and i find i retain it better . Worth every penny , Steven Robertson
"Rosetta Stone rocks!", I was leery about the advertising for Rosetta Stone, which makes it sound like a painless, fast way to learn a language. I bought it for my partner, who loves the flexibility of studying whenever he wants. And his French has gotten a lot better, even after just a few lessons!
"French Newbie", I have recently decided to learn French, and at 50 years old it's harder to learn new things. But, with Rosetta Stone's easy to use program, I've found it works quickly. I especially like the sound review, it's quite helpful in learning the pronunciation of the words.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Rosetta Stone French 1,2,3", This is by far the most comprehensive of all French lessons and is well worth the money if you are serious about learning the Language..I tried others and nothing worked as well as this!!
"a software note", This product is sold as licensed software. Users will NOT be able to load it onto more than one computer. This aspect of the product is not clear from the blurbing on the Rosetta Stone website. It is a "single-user" product. Don't think that you can share this with friends, or that it is appropriate for a lending collection.
"Excellent Language Learning System", I bought Rosseta Stone Language Learning System from Amazon. It is an excellent product. Of course, I've been learning for about one month only and to master a language takes more than that. The program allows you to go on your own pace. It helps you with the four basic skills, and more important, make you feel the closer you can to full immersion in the language.Trasnlations are avoided. I really enjoy my Rosetta course.I know I must do my daily work but I believe I will learn my third language (I already master my native Spanish and English as my second language). My goal is being able to communicate fairly well in French too in about a year.I think that knowing more than one language make you more educated and enhance your cultural life.Monolingualism is dull and poor rewarding.I think Rosetta will help me on this goal. Amazon's price was great. After I checked ,even in the product's site, I got a better price from Amazon. I saved around sixty dollars. Thanks to both: Rosetta Stone team and Amazon team.
"Total waste of money. INCREDIBLY boring.", I had more fun reading a dry, 300-page French grammar book, and I certainly learned a lot more. I'm lucky enough to have access to levels 1 & 2 for free through a program with our local library, but I don't use it anymore, even though it doesn't cost me a dime.
This stuff is really, REALLY boring and repetitive. I guess the Rosetta Stone folks think that most people learn best if the words are beaten into their brains by rote. Lessons present sets of 4 words at a time, and then reviews those same four words over and over again in a variety of ways before introducing you to another 4 words through the exact same process. Again, this is an extremely tedious way to learn.
My advice: buy something from Transparent Language, or Learn French Now! from the Learning Company (the latter is discontinued and hence very cheap, but it's really excellent stuff).
You should also buy a basic grammar book, and maybe a visual dictionary. Try checking out books in French from the childnren's section at your local library. These methods are a hell of a lot cheaper than this Rosetta Stone junk, and you'll learn a lot quicker (and have a whole lot more fun too).
"The Best There Is!", My wife and I have wanted to learn French for a few years now. We weren't sure whether to invest in Pimsleur or Rosetta Stone, so we got sample disks of both. We are very happy with our choice! Rosetta Stone is a complete language learning system. It teaches you to think in the new language in a surprisingly short period of time. Pimsleur limits you to half an hour each day. You can spend hours on this program without feeling overwhelmed, and you learn without even realizing it. It is very easy to use, and the customer support is excellent. While costly, this system is most definitely the best choice available for those truly serious about learning a new language!
