"I would recommend against this one"
I purchased this drive about 9 months ago and used it primarily for storing video. I had it hooked up on a 24in iMac via firewire 800. Blah blah same horror story, drive breaks etc... Long story short, I sent it in to get fixed while under warranty. I got it back and they had done absolutely nothing to it. It still would not mount, made the horrible buzzing noise and showed less than half capacity. This was 7 days ago. I'm still waiting to see if they will replace (not repair) the drive for me.

Now I can't say that my experience with the drive is indicative of the product at large. It is possible that I had one of the few defective ones. However, I think that my experience with LaCie's support team speaks to their incompetence. How could a repair center possibly forget to REPAIR the drive?? I literally believe they never touched the thing. If you have multiple external drives like I do then you know that eventually you are going to have problems with one of them. Its just nice to know that you have somene who can fix the problem. In this case I have nowhere to turn for that kind of help. LaCie, stay away from 'em...

"Pleased so far"
I have been a pretty devoted fan of Western Digital MyBook hard drives. However, I wanted a large drive to use for Time Machine that had firewire 800, and the Lacie beat the MyBook's in price and specs for my needs. I am glad I went with this drive - it has been great so far. Performance is as expected on FW800 - very fast! It is a bit large, but overall pretty slick looking drive as well.

Only complaint would be that the fan seems to make some noise at times. If I tap the case when it is doing it, it will usually stop - but a bit annoying none the less. Could just be mine though - I cannot imagine they all do this.

"Best external hd I've ever had."
Contrary to some other reviews I've read (not on Amazon), this drive runs very quiet and cool. If you're fortunate enough to have a firewire 800 interface, it runs twice as fast as USB 2. The enclosure and stand are well designed, and perfectly complement a Mac Pro. The cables and power supply are heavy duty as opposed to the flimsy junk that comes with some other drives I've had. I've had one in service on my Mac Pro which runs 24/7 since last May as a Time Machine backup. I leave the LaCie on all the time also. It sits on top of the Mac, looks cool, and runs even cooler and quieter than the Mac, which is saying something. No problems to date, so I've purchased a second one to back up my Windows machines. 5 stars for sure!

"1tB disc"
1 Terabyte La Cie Big Disc is a great storage medium. Connecting to Apple Macbook is easy. Works fast, reliable.

"Windows Users Beware!"
This drive was the most difficult to install of any external hard drive I've ever added to a system. Installation took about one and a half hours and it required a utility from Seagate.

My system is a Dell Precision T7400 Window XP 64 Workstation with 16GB of RAM and a 2TB RAID 0 hard drive. I consider myself very knowledgeable about computers, especially those with Windows OS's. I am adding this LaCie Big Disk Extreme+ external hard drive to increase my backup capabilities.

I first tried connecting over FireWire 400. I received a message that my device did not install properly. I tried this several times, using both of the disks supplied with the device. Unfortunately, neither disk contained any drivers or utilities to help my system see the drive. One disk contained Retrospect Express. I already have the real version of Retrospect, which is a great program, so I didn't need the watered-down version. The other "Utilities" disk contained nothing but manuals.

So I opened the manuals and found that the drive is shipped formatted for MAC; I would need to reformat the drive using Windows Disk Management. Unfortunately, this utility reported that it could not format the drive because of an internal error. I tried several iterations of this before giving up.

Then I tried to connect to the drive over USB. This time, my system reported that the drive was ready to use. But it wasn't. It still needed to be formatted. Again I tried Windows Disk Management and again I got the same errors.

What now? I remembered that one of my Seagate drives came with a utility to manage disks called `Seagate Disk Wizard'. I opened it and it immediately found the LaCie disk and asked me if I wanted to use it. Well, I sure did! It reported that there was an error writing to a sector, but allowed me to ignore the error. This was probably the error that stymied the Windows utility. However, the Seagate Disk Wizard was able to complete anyway, despite the error.

The disk was now formatted and ready to use - over USB. Dare I disconnect and try over FireWire 400? Of course I dare! Luckily, the connection over FireWire 400 worked fine this time - now that the disk was formatted. My system recognized the disk and I am now using it over FireWire 400, as I had intended.

SUMMARY: I got the drive to work, but it was a chore. I could not achieve this using LaCie's directions, but had to resort to a third party utility. I would not recommend this drive for the average Windows computer user who is used to `Plug and Play'. However, I may buy another one for myself, now that I understand how to make it work.

What our customer's say!

"I have to give this drive 5 stars - It has worked flawlessly for me", There are many different LaCie model numbers. This review is for the LaCie 301199U Big Disk Extreme+ and it works great for my setup. I have had this drive for about 9 months and never had any issues with this drive.

Note to readers: Over the years I have owned LaCie, Western Digital, Seagate and other external hard drives and I have found that the LaCie's are generally better quality than the WD's and last longer. I have purchased a LaCia that was bad out of the box and was replaced with a good drive by the store.

I was looking for a drive that could be both setup on my network as well a bootable Firewire backup system to my MacBook Pro. It performs both functions very well.

The drive is connected to my network as an AirPort Disk attached to an Apple AirPort Extreme router. It supports multiple user accounts for both Mac's and PC's and works flawlessly as a wireless drive with the latest versions of Apple AirPort software and Firmware. Note: This setup didn't work flawlessly on older versions of AirPort Extreme Firmware back in Feb 08.

I now have 2 Macs backing up to it using Time Machine. This took a little research since Time Machine didn't recognize my AirPort Disk initially but once I hooked it directly to my Mac and setup Time Machine all I needed to do was move the file Time Machine created then place the drive back on the network and now Time Machine backs up via wireless.

"Quality Control?", Received one unit. Hooked it up and noticed "auto" on/off was not working properly. Looking at the box it came in, I noticed a pink "defect" sticker on the packaging. Amazon promptly sent me another unit. When I opened it a screw or something was rolling around inside the unit. I contacted and started a case number with LaCie. I was hoping to get a brand new unit from LaCie, especially since these units didn't pass any type of quality control before shipping to Amazon, but they suggested I get warranty repair....for a brand new unit!

I sent the second unit back also. Amazon made the process easy including sending me the prepaid UPS shipping labels. In the market for a new external hard drive.

"Reliably unreliable", The only thing you can count on with LaCie drives is that they will fail within a year. Save yourself the money and the headache (I lost two within twelve months of very light use).

"form and function in a hard drive.", LaCie external hard drives are some of the best designed drives on the market. I've purchased a number of drives over the years including Seagate, Western Digital, Simple and LaCie. I have always liked the form factor of the LaCie drives best. They are very clean in their design, which means they are less obtrusive on your desk and easy to stack or stand.

This drive is very quiet, and although it does become warm, it is not hot by any means. The case is solid and they appear to be very well made. They are reliable and the price is reasonable, especially for the 2 terabyte model. The triple interface gives a lot of flexibility. Hard drives are mechanical, and by definition can break down. These LaCie drives are probably as dependable as they come. But make sure to always back up to more than one drive.

"One out of two power converters died in less than a year", I bought two of these 1 TB units less than a year ago. The "good" one used most often (mostly for occasionally editing video and music) works fine. The external power converter for the other (used for long-term storage) died in less than a year. The power converter was on for months, but the drive was powered off.

When I tried to use the "dead" 1TB drive on an iMac and a PC, it clicked and would not show itself. I could still route other FireWire 800 devices through it. It acted just like the hard drive had died. I tried the FireWire 400 and USB ports on it, but no joy. It just clicked. But when I swapped power converters, the "dead" 1TB unit worked fine and the "good" 1 TB unit acted dead. So it is just a bad power converter. The short lifeo s the power converter is the reason for four stars, not five. I assume that it will be easy to replace.

Moral of the story: if you think that your external drive is dead, check the power unit before dumping the drive.

Other than that, using the FireWire 800 port, the drives are fast enough to edit video in Final Cut Pro on an iMac. The drive is also good for editing music. Chaining three drive on the FW800 ports works well, all are fast.

"Too Risky - LaCie Drive Crash", I purchase a LaCie 1TB Big Disk Extreme (w/USB & Firewire). Initially I was very impressed with the product. Packaging is sturdy and all the features seemed to be well thought out. Within three weeks, one of the internal disks crashed and all the data on the drive had to be recovered by a professional recovery service. (My fault for not having another backup of some of the data.)

I shared this experience with some friends and although not many had used LaCie drives, two LaCie owners had the same experience. One of them is still using his for a door stop. I was very pleased with Amazon.com in the way they handled the return. I couldn't get it back within the 30 day window since it had to be shipped off to a recovery service but they entered an exception and will process a full refund.

If you insist on buying a LaCie drive, make sure you do it through Amazon and have it backed up well. It's not a drive upon which I'd like to depend.

"I had multiple problems with this drive", I've had multiple problems with this drive and would recommend that you look at alternatives. About 9 months after purchasing the drive, it froze up on my. Could not get it to respond after rebooting and you could hear a "click, click, click" sound coming from it. I contacted LaCie support, they diagnosed the problem as a bad power supply, and sent me a new one. LaCie support was very good and have nothing but praise for it. However, the drive went bad on me again, this time all my shares went bad, and again I cannot access the admin area for the drive. Since the drive is now out of warranty, I'm out of luck. All of my backups and other stored data is forever gone. I can't tell you how much I lost. Years of digital photos, archived music, documents all gone. I would not trust all my digital personal possessions to a LaCie device again.

"Definitely Durable", This is definitely the most durable external hd I have ever had or seen. I am currently deployed and whenever you move, your bags get tossed around and this has taken a beating. I haven't lost any data.

"Braun Shaver purchase", Excellent storage solution for my extensive digital audio library, and backup of important computer files overall. Can be partitioned into two 500 GB drives, for increased performance and capabilities. A trusted brand that has served me well for years. Large capacity means this will last for years, as opposed to smaller drives which will fill up faster.

"Outstanding!", I run Macs and this Lacie is now my longest-running external hard drive. I have seen too many drives by many various other vendors just wilt and die (not even under pressure), but the Lacie stands. When all else has left the battlefield or lie dying, this Lacie is still standing giving a silent "Stud Holler." I can't hear it because the drive is so quiet, but I know it should be giving one.

It's very sturdily built and noticeably impressive!

After the Western Digitals fall all over themselves to go down and OWCs whir themselves to death, Lacie (and G-Tech, who is also magnificent) weather the tempest!

I can recommend this LaCie Big Disk Extreme+ 301199U 1 TB USB 2.0/FireWire400/FireWire800 RAID System and the G-Tech 500GB G-DRIVE Q Quad Interface Hard Drive.
