"Another great program from FTM", The FTM Version I had wouldn't work with MS Vista so I chose this new version to load and learn before I had to upgrade to a new operating system. It is a little hard to get used to the new screens, but after working with it a bit I think it is going to be great.
Like the way the trees print out. Awesome.


"Does not support Family Tree Maker Web Sites version 9 and earlier!!!!", I have been maintaining a family tree with Family Tree Maker 9 and earlier versions for a number of years. I needed to update the site. In the process I decided to upgrade to the lastest version of Family Tree Maker 2008. I recieved the product and soon learned from the Family Tree Maker technical support that this version would not work with my current Family Tree Web Site version 9!!! It took a great deal of time and effort to create my current Family Tree Web Site. Now to use the latest version of Family Tree Maker 2008 I must creat another Family Tree Web Site. What are the people of Family Tree Maker thinking? It is questionalbe how long they will keep the old web site up, techinal support was not sure. Must I maintain two web sites now? I believe the software should be seamless and all changes created by Family Tree Maker should be transparent to the customer. I feel let down and decieved by this product.

"Family Tree Maker is amazing", This software is amazing. It is also overwhelming - there is a lot to learn to really utilize the software completely. It is easy to spend hours "lost" in family history. One thing that sold me on this product was the six months of Ancestry.com for free. It has allowed me to try this site before purchasing a subscription - which is expensive. I am very pleased with the product.

"Not compatible!!!", I have the Family Tree Maker version 3.01 and I've had it for many years. Loved it, but decided to upgrade to the 2008 Family Tree Maker and see wha was new. I have a desktop and laptop, both with Windows XP and a new desk top I got in Dec. '07 with Vista. Since this 2008 version said it was compatible with Vista and XP, I bought it. Well, I will say, it is compatible with XP. Everything wenr in as it was supposed to and even went to other sites and my old version and entered information into the program. But when it came to Vista, the program went in okay, but when I tried to get data from other sources, nothing happened. When there was a clue online about any of my relatives and I clicked on it, the program closed. All I can do is enter information. The only saving grace with all this is they gave me a six month membership to Ancestry.com.

I called support and a nice woman from Utah told me, after we tried several things to make it all better, she would send me instructions about how to do a "clean boot". The instuctions were five pages long and I barely got through the first page. Okay, I'm not a technical person, but I know a little. Now they have sent me an email telling me that they are going to send me the newest version of FTM, 2009.

The only reason I gave two stars instead of one is because the woman I talked to was not in India. I have nothing against the Indian people, but I can't understand most of them.

So don't believe all you read on the box. They lie, like so many things it is not compatible with Vista. Microsoft, get on the ball!!!

"great product", Great product!! I bought it for my dad and he loves it.
He was using an older version and needed to upgrade. I found a good deal on amazon for the Platinum edition. He still goes on and on about how great it is.

"Is Amazon Selling Beta Versions ??", I encountered an Instillation problem with my new Platinum Family Tree Maker 2008 during set-up. The problem occured when my system crashed while the "InstallShield Wizard" was performing the "Family Tree Maker Beta Set-up function". I assumed that I had purchased a new, full version program, so I did a reload and checked it agin. It was true , it read "Beta". You can check this out by going to your control Panel and run either the repair or removal program and read the Family Tree Maker 2008 Setup Wizard status message. Check It Out!



"WORKS GREAT FOR ME!!!", Very early in 2008 I set-up an online account with ancestry.com. I was never interested in genealogy until this year. Now that I discovered nearly 3,000 relation online, I decided now was a good time to purchase the Family Tree Maker (Platinum Edition) 2008. Initially, I was put-off by the other reviews that I read on this site. I am glad I finally decided to take it for a spin myself. Just received my package, yesterday, and have it loaded on my PC and then downloaded an update for it. It was then a snap downloading my online information to my desktop and then loading it into my new software package. Works Great!!! I already had a one-year "world" membership to ancestry.com and they "extended" my subscription an additional six (6) months by purchasing this software package. Thank-you ancestry.com!!! If you're a bit nervous about reading the other less than positive feedback on this site about this product, I recommend you do what I did and go ahead and purchase the software and decide for yourself. You won't regret it!!!

"Invaluable but incomplete", I've been using this product for about 3 months. I'm not tainted by having used the previous versions of Family Tree Maker.

The killer feature for this tool is its tight linkage to [...]. As you add people to the family tree, Family Tree Maker automatically looks for references to that person in [...] very extensive data base. This feature alone makes this version of Family Tree maker invaluable. I've filled out my family tree to about six generations in just a few weekends of usage. To me that is just freaking amazing.

The downside is that the tool is not as complete as I would like. I've found that I need to use another product (RootMagic) to do basic editing and error checking because I've found Family Tree Maker lacking in general editing and importing.

Even with these deficiencies, I'd still say Family Tree Maker is a good value (considering it includes a subscription to [...]). I highly recommend Family Tree Maker but would also recommend RootMagic as a companion piece of software.




"Horrible, horrible, horrible", Version 2008 is unstable, buggy and has very limited functionality. Reports in particular have been dramatically shortchanged; working with sources and media files causes numerous crashes. Data entry is non-intuitive and time consuming.

FTM 2006 is still available for purchase, and this was the last, completely working version of the product. It has far more features and doesn't crash on you every 5 minutes, and you gain nothing by upgrading to 2008.



"Frequent Crashes", I have have had numerous program crashes. Particularly when working with sources. Try to create a new source - crash. Try to link a fact to an existing source - crash. The lady on the help desk said they had other reports of similar problems. She said the programmers were aware of the problem and were working on a patch. No hint of when the patch would be ready. In the mean time, she apoligized for my inconvenience but had no help for me. If I were no locked into FTM 2008 due having Vista as my operating system, I would drop it in a heartbeat.
